Your investment in Lighthouse Louisiana
means the world to us. It doesn’t matter
whether your donation is large or small –we
put every penny to good use fighting for
people with disabilities.
As the President of the Lighthouse and a
donor just like you, I’m happy to report that
2014 brought us some positive changes and
a welcome bump in sales of our manufactured products. With the launch of our 6-color
custom printed cups, we were able to begin
supplying local and regional restaurants and
growing our commercial business.
This means the organization you support is
that much closer to supporting itself so your
donation goes farther. I’m proud of our progress, but our journey toward self-sufficiency is
not yet done. In the meantime, your generosity
is allowing us to serve people with disabilities
– connecting them with jobs and helping them
build skills for independence.

A Lighthouse Legacy
Four Generations of Service
When Edwin Thome Colton gathered friends in
1915 to find jobs for people who were blind, he
might never have imagined his dream would live
today. Lighthouse Louisiana (Lighthouse for the
Blind) began with the idea that people who are
blind deserve the opportunity to earn a living
and support their families. Founding Chairman
Edwin was followed on the Lighthouse Board
by his son, grandson (Edwin II and Edwin III),
and great-grandson Curtis Eustis, who serves as
Board Chairperson today.
Thanks to Edwin’s dream and his family’s
legacy of support, Lighthouse is the largest
employer of people who are blind in Louisiana.

A Life You Touched
Because of you, a husband in crisis was able to find help for his ailing wife
Last year, an elderly couple living in rural
Louisiana came to the Lighthouse in search
of help. Because the husband was hard of
hearing, the duty of placing phone calls had
always fallen to the wife. Sadly, the wife had
developed Alzheimer’s and was no longer
able to make calls nor handle their everyday
affairs.
At Lighthouse Louisiana, the couple got
the help they needed. Through a partnership with the Louisiana Commission for the
Deaf, the Lighthouse was able to connect
them with a caption phone that allowed the
husband to speak in his own voice and read
the typed response of the person he was
calling via a small screen built into the
phone.
A few short weeks later, the wife had a medical emergency. Instead of losing precious
moments trying to track down a neighbor to
place a phone call, the husband was able to
call 911 on his caption phone. Because of
this quick communication, the wife was able
to get the rapid medical attention she needed
and is now safely back at home.

When kids come to Lighthouse Louisiana, they learn how to be comfortable out in the

Financial Snapshot
In 2014, Lighthouse Louisiana employed 70 individuals who are blind to make a range of
products in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Gulfport, Mississippi.
Much like any other business, our greatest cost is personnel. While we are extremely prudent
with resources, our mission calls us to create competitive jobs for people who are visually-impaired - so our substantial personnel cost is a positive indicator that we are responsibly fulfilling
our mission.
