24th Sunday in Ordinary Time † September 11, 2016
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. “ Luke 15:18
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
A Word from the Pastor ...
Hard to believe it is fifteen years today since the most terrible terrorist attack on our own soil took place, on
September 11, 2001. Not only was that a crime that took the life of almost 4,000 people and left many families wounded forever, but it was also an attack on this nation’s Judeo-Christian culture, as it has been lived
since the nation’s founding.
I am always impressed by the writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch. On his way to Rome to receive the crown of
martyrdom in the year 108, the Syrian bishop wrote seven letters to different churches, expressing his eagerness for martyrdom and to “be ground by the teeth of the lions so that I may become Christ’s pure bread.” He
even begged the Christian communities not to show him any misplaced kindness and seek to spare on the day
of his martyrdom! No wonder he is considered one of the towering figures of the early Church.
Yet, in spite of his little concern for his own survival, St. Ignatius was very concerned about the Church’s
ability to exercise her ministry freely. In his letters, he begged the Christian communities to pray for religious
freedom. Through the invocation of the “Separation of Church and State” axiom, this freedom is under attack
in this country more than ever since the Nation’s founding. Yet, as the well-known evangelist Billy Graham
states, “The framers of our Constitution meant we were to have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.”
As society becomes more diverse, some maintain that one’s freedom should be limited to the private sphere
and when one practices one’s faith in the “sanctuary.” Pope Francis lambasted this notion a year ago when he
said, "Religious freedom is not only that of private thought or worship. It is the liberty to live, both privately
and publicly, according to the ethical principles resulting from found truth."
Aware of the secularist threat to life, the preservation of marriage as we have known it for centuries, and freedom of religion, the U.S. bishops have designated the two month period from Friday September 9th to Friday
November 11, 2016 as a National Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty. This event, observed annually since 2013, is an opportunity to recognize the challenges that now face our nation and the
urgent need for wise, moral, civic leadership to address them.
A significant act during the Call to Prayer in prior years has been the invitation to fast on Fridays. In addition, the bishops are encouraging all to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary and a Glory Be for the week's intention and for our civic leaders and the upcoming elections. More on that can be found at: www.usccb.org/
issues-and-action/take-action-now/call-to-prayer/index.cfm.
If Religious Liberty is important to not only you, but also and more importantly to your children and grandchildren, and you wish to explore this issue, please come to a meeting of similarly interested individuals here
at our parish. At this meeting, to be held on Monday September 26 at 7:30PM, we will learn about the ever
increasing loss of respect for religiously-motivated public discourse and action in contemporary society. We
will hear about the extent of the assault on Religious Liberty in schools at all levels, by government at all levels, and in our country’s military. The Belleville Knights of Columbus Council 835 has graciously offered to
host us at the Knights Hall, located on Bridge Street (right behind the Parish Parking Lot). For those with
young children, baby sitting services will be provided. Please make the time to join us at this important
event, and pray that we may grow in our resolve as “One Nation, Under God,” especially in the aftermath of
the 9/11 tragedy.
A blessed Sunday to all,
Fr. Ivan Sciberras

Pope Francis at Wednesday Audience:
Mercy drives us to transform the world and history
Page Five
Mercy saves, and its missionary impulse transforms the world and history, affirmed the Holy Father during the catechesis of today’s general audience, held in St. Peter’s Square and attended by over 25,000 people. The Pope commented on the reading from
the Gospel of St. Matthew, which narrates the episode in which the imprisoned John the Baptist sends the disciples to Jesus to ask,
“Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”, recalling that the Precursor anxiously awaited the coming of the
Messiah and in his preaching he had described him colorfully, “like a judge who would have finally established the Kingdom of
God and purified His people, rewarding the righteous and punishing the wicked.” However, “Jesus began His public ministry in a
very different style, and John wanted to know if He was truly the Messiah, or if he should await another.”
Francis continued, “At first Jesus’ answer did not correspond to the Baptist’s expectations. Indeed, Jesus said, ‘Go and tell John
what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised
up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me’. … He answers that he is
the concrete instrument of the mercy of the Father, Who reaches out to all bringing consolation and salvation, and in this way expresses God’s judgment.”
The message to the Church from this episode in the life of Christ is very clear. God did not send His Son into the world to punish
sinners, nor to annihilate the wicked. Instead he offers them the invitation to convert so that, seeing the signs of divine goodness,
they are able to find the path back to Him. “The justice that the Baptist places at the center of his preaching is expressed in Jesus
primarily as mercy. And the Precursor’s doubts pre-empt the disquiet that Jesus subsequently elicits by His actions and His words.
… Scandal means ‘obstacle’. Jesus therefore warns of a particular danger: if his works of mercy are the main obstacle to believing,
this means that there is a false image of the Messiah. Blessed instead are those who, before Christ’s gestures and words, render
glory to the Father in heaven.”
“Jesus’ warning remains relevant,” the Pope emphasized. “Today too humanity
constructs images of God that prevent us from appreciating His real presence.
Some offer a ‘do-it-yourself’ faith that reduces God to the limited spaces of our
own desires and convictions. But this faith is not conversion to the Lord that is
revealed; on the contrary, it prevents us from challenging our life and our conscience. Others reduce God to a false idol, using His holy name to justify the pursuit of interests or even hatred and violence. For others, God is merely a psychological refuge for seeking reassurance in difficult moments, a faith wrapped up in
itself and impermeable to the merciful love of Jesus that drives us towards our
brothers. Others consider Christ simply as a good teacher of ethics, one among
many in history. Finally, there are those who suffocate faith in a purely intimate
relationship with Jesus, annulling its missionary drive that is able to transform the
world and history. The Christian believes in the God of Jesus Christ, and his wish
is that of growing in the living experience of His mystery of love.”
The Bishop of Rome concluded his catechesis by urging those present not to place
any obstacle to the Father’s merciful action, and asking for “the gift of great faith
so as to become signs and instruments of mercy.”

Marcilio Andrino, along with his wife Fernanda and
two children, returns to his seat after bringing up
the offertory gifts at the Mass of Canonization for
St. Theresa of Kolkata last Sunday.
The healing of the Brazilian mechanical engineer
was deemed to be miraculous and attributed to the
intercession of the Albanian nun. According to
the official account, Andrino was in a coma and
dying on December 9, 2008 from a viral brain infection that had resulted in multiple abscesses
and an accumulation of fluid around the brain.
A brain scan the following day, after he and Fernanda prayed through the intercession of Mother
Theresa and a relic was placed against his head,
showed that he was completely healed.

PRAYER INTENTIONS OF THE HOLY FATHER
Universal:
Centrality of the Human Person
That each may contribute to the common good and to the building of a society

That by participating in the Sacraments and meditating on Scripture, Christians may become more aware of their mission to evangelize.
ST. PETER’S SCHOOL
Welcome Back! Those words echoed throughout the hallways
of St. Peter’s School this week. September is a month always
characterized by “great expecta ons” on the part of the enre school community including students, teachers and parents. In a short me, the children will transi on from the lazy,
hazy days of summer to the new school year. Opening day
ji ers will quickly disappear as old friends are reunited and
new friendships are begun.
At St. Peter’s School we are truly blessed to welcome all our
children to this community of faith. It is a privilege to encounter the Living Christ; it is an awesome responsibility to provide a faith-filled educa on to the students, as we con nue
the teaching mission of Jesus, The Master Teacher.
“The educa on of children and young people is such an important task in forming them as free and responsible human
beings. It affirms their dignity as an inalienable gi that flows
from our original crea on as children made in the image and
likeness of God. And because educa on truly forms human
beings, it is especially the duty and responsibility of the
Church, who is called to serve mankind from the heart of God
and in such a way that no other ins tu on can.” Pope Francis
