This is my first year as Chairman and it has been a pleasure to be part of such a wonderful organisation full of energy and talent. I am enthusiastic about being part of an exciting journey to make our company one of the most talented and innovative opera companies in the world. In September last year we welcomed our new Chief Executive, Craig Hassall, to the Company. Craig brings a unique portfolio of expertise and skills in the arts industry, having delivered very successful projects in the UK as Managing Director of English National Ballet, and subsequently Chief Operating Officer of the Raymond Gubbay group. Craig’s early days with Opera Australia left a memorable imprint on him and he has returned (16 years later) to our company with a love for Opera Australia and a determination to help future-proof it through the careful shaping and management of our new business model. We are delighted to have Craig on board. During the period following Adrian Collette’s departure and up to Craig’s arrival in Australia Narelle Beattie stepped up as Acting General Manager and has had a magnificent impact on our company. We all thank Narelle for her contribution and congratulate her on her appointment as Chief Operating Officer of the Company. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour Carmen 5 Opera Australia Annual Report 2013 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT CONTINUED I am pleased to report that the financial result for the year ended 31 December 2013 shows a consolidated surplus of $468,000. The overall position is satisfactory due to the very strong performance of the Opera Australia Capital Fund which returned net income of $2.8 million for the year. This positive Capital Fund result has been largely offset by an operating deficit for Opera Australia of $2.4 million. This deficit is despite strong box office performances during the year; overall audience numbers were in line with our plans. We achieved excellent ticket sales in a fiercely competitive environment. Despite good sales the deficit is a setback and is largely due to 'other income areas' not achieving targets and, most concerning, high expenditure in a year with multiple large-scale productions. The Board is looking to establish sustained growth in reserves. Whilst a robust Capital Fund will underpin reserves growth, operating results must be significantly improved. Opera Australia is entering a period where significant change has to be implemented if we are to achieve our vision of being a leading opera company on a global basis. The Company’s underlying cost structures are being scrutinised and new lines of income must be secured to ensure a strong future. The Board of Opera Australia believes it is critical that we have a financially robust company. If we get that right we will be able to continue to offer an outstanding artistic experience. Artistically the Company is in great shape; the positive response of our audience has been unambiguous. On completion of the second year of a new business model it’s clear that our expanded activity portfolio is achieving our goals and that it sets the best way forward. The journey however is only possible if we are strong financially. As part of the changes process, we have also been reviewing the structure of our Board. In doing so we have looked to see that all the required skills sets are covered, helping us move in new directions. Simon Mordant AM joined the Board in January 2014. We welcome his unique knowledge and expertise in both Australian business and as a major arts philanthropist and supporter. Simon is a director of The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Chairman of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and is the Australian Commissioner for the 2015 Venice Biennale. He is a former board member of Sydney Theatre Company. Philip Bacon AM joined the Opera Australia Board in March 2014. As an art dealer, patron and philanthropist Philip is a senior member of the Australian arts world and has been an active supporter of Opera Australia for many years. Philip is a trustee of the Board of the Queensland Art Gallery, a member of the Queensland Government’s Arts Investment Advisory Board, a member of the Board of the Foundation of the National Gallery of Australia, a member of the Board of the Brisbane Festival and a director of the Opera Australia Capital Fund. With Simon and Philip we have two outstanding Australians both with a deep knowledge of the arts community. We will continue to consider board structures and composition on a regular basis to ensure our board is fit for purpose, alert and agile in a most demanding industry. I will now take the opportunity to thank my board colleagues for their support and contributions during the past year. We are blessed with a passionate and well informed board, determined to see Opera Australia continue to succeed and produce outstanding performances and artists. In the past year, Opera Australia has presented enormously successful works. The Melbourne Ring Cycle has been praised by critics, audiences and partners alike. I heartily congratulate Lyndon Terracini, Anthony Legge and Neil Armfield for their artistic leadership of the project, and the standards it achieved. It was an undertaking for the entire company to be proud of, and a success to build on in coming years. John Bell’s stunning production of Tosca was a great success in Sydney Opera House. As director he brought out the timelessness of its central stories, and layered these with imagery and chemistry that resonated with audiences of today. The outstanding performances of principal artists Alexia Voulgaridou and Yonghoon Lee, and conductor Christian Badea in particular, brought this story to life and showed how opera, at its absolute best, is an art form like no other. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour had its second successful year, with an outstanding production of Carmen that shook the harbour and lit up the Sydney skyline. Spectacular images of this event are fast becoming part of Sydney’s tourism iconography. This event aligns Opera Australia artistry with the NSW Government’s tourism goals to achieve a special kind of 7 Income and Expenditure Components 2013 Income CHAIRMAN'S REPORT CONTINUED partnership that bodes well for the future, as we seek to create projects that attract financial support, and audience appeal, beyond traditional presentations. The international opera landscape has irrevocably changed and Opera Australia must embrace the new reality, and adapt to thrive. Opera audiences around the world have dropped, sustainable box office is a challenge, and competition for other sources of income, both public and private, is tight. 75% ($74.8 m) Box office, earned income and contributions 25% ($25.2 m) Government grants Expenditure 57% ($56.9 m) Staff and employment expenses 15% ($14.6 m) Venue, transport and travel costs 19% ($19.4 m) Depreciation, other production and overhead costs There are so many opportunities for an opera company which embraces change, and strides confidently forward in presenting work that connects with a wider range of audiences. This means productions with the highest production values, and with the most spectacular design, that can be achieved through co-presentations (and cost sharing) with other international companies. It means singers at the highest international standards, cast in the roles of best fit. And it means formats that are familiar and welcoming to wider potential audiences, be that outdoor events, festival-style presentations or music theatre. This approach of being adaptable and responsive to market changes is what Opera Australia has to aim for - not only to survive but to succeed where others have failed. We have the capacity to embrace this exciting future. In truth our mission is to see we do embrace this future. Opera Australia is appreciative of the support it receives from major stakeholders including patrons and subscribers and corporate sponsors. The work of the Opera Australia Capital Fund is vital to the ongoing success of the Company and I would like to acknowledge its board and patrons. Finally I want to recognise our government partners: the Federal Government, through the Australia Council for the Arts, and the governments of New South Wales and Victoria. 9% ($9.4 m) Marketing and promotion 9 Chief Executive's Report Craig Hassall It has been an uplifting experience to return to Opera Australia after so many years. I left the Company in 1997 to work on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and have now returned to a very different Opera Australia. Under Lyndon’s artistic leadership, the Company has grown in scale, reach and aspiration. I was fortunate to be able to come back to Australia in April 2013 to see Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour and experienced the impact and quality of what Lyndon has achieved for Opera Australia. Here was Australia’s national opera company in full flight with Carmen as I had never seen it before. And now, with 2013 behind us, it is an opportunity to reflect on the year that passed. 2013 was the second year of the newly expanded Opera Australia, a year with celebrated new productions, the Company’s first Ring cycle, national tours of musicals, and a host of national presentations that have engaged communities across the country. The Melbourne Ring Undoubtedly the highlight of 2013 was the first presentation of the Ring cycle by Opera Australia. This has been a long held ambition of our company and it has taken much planning with the artistic, operational La Fura dels Baus production of A Masked Ball 11 Opera Australia Annual Report 2013 CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S REPORT CONTINUED and financial support of many stakeholders to make the Ring a reality. The Ring was presented in the State Theatre of Arts Centre Melbourne, our venue partner, and provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase the newly expanded orchestra pit. The expansion was very necessary as the Melbourne Ring Orchestra united over 135 musicians from Australia and around the world under the baton of the remarkable Pietari Inkinen in his debut with the Company. Neil Armfield and his creative team gave us a production with a particular intelligence, depth and emotional intensity and a cast from heaven, including Terje Stensvold, Susan Bullock, Stefan Vinke, Stuart Skelton, Daniel Sumegi and Warwick Fyfe. Melbourne embraced the Ring with much enthusiasm. Maureen and Tony Wheeler led the charge of philanthropic support and our Ring Leaders were out in force. We enjoyed particular support from our funding bodies and additional necessary support from the Victorian Major Events Corporation. Apart from the performances, there was a great appetite for The Melbourne Ring Festival which augmented the celebrations around Melbourne. With such a welcome reception, strong engagement and successful outcome, we are confident of making the Ring a regular feature in Melbourne. Mainstage Performances Sydney and Melbourne once again enjoyed a sumptuous offering of productions, starting in Sydney with our new(ish) tradition of a bells and whistles New Year’s Eve party under the sails of Sydney Opera House. The concert and the opening of La bohème are becoming a welcome fixture to the social calendar. The creative team of La Fura dels Baus, led by Àlex Ollé, gave us their first exploration of a Verdi opera in their interpretation of A Masked Ball. This totalitarian world of bureaucrats, financiers and politicians surviving a financial crisis was an arresting and impactful work. A Masked Ball also brilliantly showcased the talents of Diego Torre, Tamar Iveri and José Carbó. The Sydney Summer season continued apace with welcome productions of Il Trovatore, Falstaff and Orpheus in the Underworld, the latter given a wry twist by Jonathan Biggins. The Company then moved to Melbourne for its Autumn season which presented Aida with Daria Masiero as the eponymous slave and Carlo Barricelli as Radamès. This season was complemented by new productions of A Masked Ball and Handel’s Partenope with Emma Matthews. The Company returned to Sydney in June to present three new productions. The first, The Force of Destiny was a grateful provision of the Opera Conference partnership with our state colleagues, Opera Queensland, State Opera of South Australia and West Australian Opera. The production was very well received and will now have an opportunity to be performed across the country. The Force of Destiny was followed by a new and intense production of Tosca, directed by one of Australia’s greatest artists, John Bell. John teamed with Michael Scott-Mitchell, Teresa Negroponte and Nick Schlieper to create a powerful platform in a fascist setting for Alexia Voulgaridou and Cheryl Barker as Tosca, Yonghoon Lee and Diego Torre as Cavaradossi and John Wegner and Douglas McNicol as Scarpia. This was then followed by a complete mood swing with Roger Hodgman’s effervescent and engaging Don Pasquale. Conal Coad and Rachelle Durkin brought Donizetti to life and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra were in fine form under the baton of Guillaume 13 CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S REPORT CONTINUED Tourniaire. The production was a co-production with the Tokyo Art Foundation and made possible through the generosity of our generous patron, Dr Haruhisa Handa. Elijah Moshinsky’s celebrated and popular production of La Traviata followed, with an excellent cast and John Cox’s much-loved production of Albert Herring provided a fine opportunity to showcase the talents of our ensemble of principal artists including Kanen Breen, Jacqueline Dark, Sian Pendry and Dominica Matthews. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour This was the second year of our outdoor spectacular and audiences once again flocked to the harbourside setting in March and April to enjoy what is rapidly becoming a highlight of New South Wales’ tourism event calendar. After the impact of the massive chandelier in the inaugural La Traviata, it was going to be difficult to trump, however, Gale Edwards and Brian Thomson gave us an impactful and arresting Carmen, with a stellar cast including Rinat Shaham, Dmytro Popov, Milijana Nikolic and Adam Diegel. The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra were once again magnificently conducted by Brian Castles-Onion. The combination of the setting, the quality of performance and the wonderful staging attracted audiences in their thousands. With the vision of both Dr Handa and the NSW Government through Destination NSW, this event is set to enthral audiences for many seasons to come. As I write this, Madama Butterfly is playing to capacity audiences on the harbour. South Pacific Another event confidently taking its place on the annual Opera Australia calendar is our national tour of a musical. The award-winning production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific had a spectacular debut in Opposite above: Aida Opposite below: Rachelle Durkin as Norina and Conal Coad as Don Pasquale Don Pasquale 15 ANNUAL REPORT 2012 CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S REPORT CONTINUED 2012 and received popular and critical acclaim in its national tour. So great was the demand for the show that we brought it back in 2013 to Sydney Opera House and toured to Perth and Adelaide for the first time in many years. Audiences in all three cities showed a great enthusiasm for the production and the standard of presentation was as high and energetic as the first performance by the Company in 2012. We have now just commenced rehearsals for our 2014 musical, again from Rodgers and Hammerstein. The King and I will open in Brisbane and then transfer to Melbourne and Sydney later in the year. Both advance sales and the buzz from the rehearsal room are very good early indicators of a successful tour for 2014. National Engagement As a significant national company, we take our responsibility for national engagement very seriously. Since 1997 we have had a comprehensive touring strategy to take opera to as many audiences around Australia as possible. Previously called Oz Opera, we now proudly tour nationally as Opera Australia. Whilst the scale of productions is dictated by the size of venues available nationally, the quality and production values of these tours are as high as our mainstage productions. In 2013 we presented Don Giovanni in 22 locations across Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia over 9 weeks. Apart from the performances, we reached more people through live streaming, workshops, screenings and free community events across metropolitan, regional and very remote Australia. Michael Gow and Robert Kemp created a stunning production that enthralled audiences across the country. The audiences were highly satisfied with almost 100% of surveyed respondents saying they would return. Alexia Voulgaridou as Tosca and Yonghoon Lee as Cavaradossi Tosca 17 Opera Australia Annual Report 2013 CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S REPORT CONTINUED We also consolidated our relationship with Barkly Regional Arts in Tennant Creek and established a new cultural exchange between local Indigenous musicians, The Winanjjikari Music Centre All Stars (WMC All Stars) and the Oz Opera Chamber Orchestra. Oz Opera’s schools tours had another successful year in 2013, in NSW the program was launched by The Hon. Mr George Souris, NSW Minister for the Arts, before commencing a 26 week tour of The Magic Flute, being seen by 45,160 primary school children across the state. In Victoria, our production of The Barber of Seville was launched by The Hon. Ms Heidi Victoria, Victorian Minister for the Arts and was enjoyed by 30,051 children, including 5,077 who saw a performance incorporating Auslan Shadow Interpreters. Our Auslan Shadow Interpreting program for Deaf and hard of hearing primary school children won the Creative Partnerships Australia Arts Access Award in Victoria this year and was nominated for the national award. In 2012 Opera Australia had great success with a collaboration in Northern Queensland which resulted in Yarrabah! The Musical. In 2013, the Company teamed up with the Mbantua Festival of Indigenous culture to present The Bungalow Song. This music theatre project explored the impact of white settlement on aboriginal life in central Australia and was the centrepiece of the festival. The Community Choirs initiative which began with great success in Sydney during 2012 moved to Melbourne in 2013. The Melbourne Community Choirs performed with Opera Australia principal singers and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for 3,750 people at Mazda Opera in the Bowl, a major community access event within The Melbourne Ring Festival. Some wonderful feedback was received from participants such as: ‘I said, “I’m going to sing opera! And people said to me, “Don’t be stupid!” But here you are. I just believe that sometimes dreams do come true and in the process of this performance, you develop so much confidence.’ Wheelchair-bound participant Our Stakeholders Our growth and success is only possible due to the support of a number of key stakeholders. The Federal Government, through the Australia Council for the Arts, is our primary government supporter and we are also grateful to the governments of New South Wales and Victoria for their ongoing support as well as their specific support of Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour (Destination NSW) and the Ring cycle (Victorian Major Events Corporation). The Federal Government is also a key partner through Playing Australia of our national touring strategy. Mazda Australia has been an enthusiastic and engaged Principal Partner and has enabled a greater level of public engagement for opera through their partnership. Thanks to Mazda, we are able to present our annual Mazda Opera in the Domain, Mazda Opera in the Bowl and a range of other activities. Alongside Mazda are a range of longstanding partnerships with key Australian companies that enable a host of activity throughout the country. The Ring cycle demonstrated that private support is strong and focussed for Opera Australia. We have a loyal and committed group of philanthropists for all of our activities, whether this is the support of emerging artists, association with particular repertoire or the encouragement of educational and outreach projects. To all these supporters a huge thank you for your commitment and ongoing support. 19 CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S REPORT CONTINUED The Team We face difficult times ahead despite the success of the Company. The performing arts are challenged financially across the board and Opera Australia will need to continue to be agile, creative and prudent in the coming years. Lyndon must be congratulated on his creative approach to presenting opera in the 21st Century and his vision is responsible for the vibrancy of Opera Australia today. Longer term planning is critical to our ongoing success and belief in the workforce of the Company a crucial component. All that we do at Opera Australia relies on a vast number of talented individuals. From our singers and musicians to technicians, makers and organisers, opera is an incredibly hungry resource of human capital. Happily we work in an industry that thrives on enthusiasm, talent and creativity. I would like to pay a huge debt of gratitude to all that have made our year a success in 2013. To David Mortimer, our new chair and the Board of Directors, to all the staff in our Surry Hills headquarters and Melbourne office, and to all our performers and crews at Sydney Opera House, Arts Centre Melbourne and around the country, thank you for all your hard work over this last year. It has been a pleasure to come back to Opera Australia. Our staff includes singers, instrumentalists, repetiteurs, language coaches, directors, conductors, designers, electricians, mechanists, props technicians, dressers, make-up technicians and other production staff, stage managers, stores-persons, carpenters, welders, tailors, sewers, wig-makers, painters, writers, ticket sellers and administrators. Opera Australia’s activities also depend on the contribution of a significant number of staff at its performance venues, in particular at the Sydney Opera House and the Arts Centre Melbourne. These include technical and backstage staff, ticket sellers, ushers, catering and facilities management staff. Smaller venues, such as those used for regional touring performances, also supply staff to support the Company’s activities. A wholly owned subsidiary of Opera Australia, the AOBO performs for Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet during their respective Sydney seasons. Formerly the Sydney Elizabethan Orchestra, the AOBO has earned a reputation for warmth of sound and impressive flexibility in the most challenging of environments. The repertory performance schedule of Opera Australia means that up to five different productions are being performed and prepared at any one time, resulting in up to eight performances per week. The confined space of the orchestra pit presents occupational health and safety issues, mainly high noise levels. Excellent seasonal and casual musicians provide respite for the permanent musicians of the Orchestra. Notable recent productions for Opera Australia in the last year have included: Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour - Carmen, which saw the orchestra playing once again on the harbour stage in the acclaimed second season of this landmark Sydney event; A Masked Ball, Verdi’s classic in a sensational interpretation by the cutting-edge Spanish creatives La fura dels Baus and conducted by Andrea Molino; John Bell’s first foray into mainstage opera with a beautiful re-imagining of Tosca conducted by Christian Badea, and The Australian Ballet‘s wonderful season of Prokofieff’s Cinderella, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky and conducted by Nicolette Fraillon. In a first, members of the AOBO contributed significantly to the success of Opera Australia’s first Ring cycle: As part of the huge Melbourne Ring Orchestra they joined members of Orchestra Victoria and nine other national and international orchestras to create a unique body of extraordinary musicians. The Orchestra also features on recent recordings of live performances in the Sydney Opera House of Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, La bohème and Swan Lake for cinema and DVD release. Designed to strengthen and supplement their already evident talent and performance skills, the program involves them closely with the rehearsal and performance activity of the Company. Opera Australia is most grateful for the support provided to enable the participation of singers in the Young Artist Program. Members of the program in 2014 are: Jonathan Abernethy (supported by John Lamble AO); Natalie Aroyan (The Robert Lomax Young Artists Scholarship Award); Anna Dowsley (supported by Martin Dickson AM and Susie Dickson); Program Coordinator – Andrew Greene Friends of Opera Australia Friends of Opera Australia enjoy a closer involvement with the opera as well as helping to support the work we do. Friends are invited to our seasonal Insight evenings, to hear artists perform and the creative team discuss works from new productions. Friends are also given access to select dress rehearsals and discounted tickets where possible. The Board of Directors approved a distribution to Opera Australia of $400,000 and in doing so the Fund continued to fulfil its role of supporting the work of the Company through an annual grant. At year end the market value of the Capital Fund was $13.4 million. It was a great honour for me to be appointed Chairman of the Capital Fund following the resignation of Rupert Myer in May. Rupert led the Fund through a period of very real progress and his outstanding stewardship of the Tenth Anniversary Capital Campaign ensured its success and has encouraged us to set new targets for the future. We are delighted that Rupert and his wife, Annabel, will maintain their close association through their membership of the Council of Governors. Opposite above: Yvonne Kenny, David Harper, Taryn Fiebig, Nicole Car, The Hon Mike Rann, Catherine Carby, Duncan Rock, Samuel Dundas St James's Palace As we reflect on the achievements of the Tenth Anniversary Capital Campaign I am delighted to report that when all donations and pledges, including notified bequests, are aggregated it highlights more than $24 million received and pledged to the Capital Fund since its inception. The cumulative distributions from the Capital Fund to Opposite below: Karina Kielbinska, Annabel and Rupert Myer, Helen Nugent, Greg Melgaard St James's Palace 35 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT CONTINUED Opera Australia total $2.735 million. It is our goal for the future to build on the momentum created by the Campaign. As part of Opera Australia Capital Fund UK’s initiative to raise funds in the UK a gala recital and dinner was held in the splendid State Apartments of St. James’s Palace in September. The recital was the highlight of the evening with remarkable performances by Nicole Car, Catherine Carby, Taryn Fiebig, Samuel Dundas and Duncan Rock, accompanied by David Harper. Following the encore and with the company of singers remaining on stage, Opera Australia’s new Chief Executive, Craig Hassall, invited Yvonne Kenny to sing 'Home Sweet Home'. It was a very special moment received with great applause from both expats and those Opera Australia patrons who had travelled to London for the occasion. We are indebted to the Gala Committee, chaired by Lord Goodlad, whose enthusiastic involvement led to a memorable evening. Other Capital Fund events during the year included a recital and dinner hosted by Rupert and Annabel Myer on board the Silver Shadow in Port Melbourne. As in the past, Ashley Dawson-Damer kindly made available her residence for a reception which celebrated the achievement and closure of the Capital Campaign. The annual Council of Governors’ dinner was our last event for the year and took place at the home of Jane Clarke who has graciously hosted Capital Fund events for a decade. The Council of Governors comprises the Fund’s Directors and donor members who have contributed at least $250,000 or pledged a bequest of at least $500,000. We were able to welcome new members, Mark Dimmitt, Judith Kinnear, Gary Payne and Hamish Parker to the Council during the year. Congratulations are due to Opera Australia for staging the outstanding performances that comprised The Melbourne Ring Cycle. To Maureen Wheeler whose extraordinary generosity was the catalyst for the creation of the Company’s first Ring cycle, we extend our heartfelt thanks. I am grateful to my dedicated fellow Directors, David Armstrong, Philip Bacon AM, Michael Bartlett, Craig Hassall, François Kunc, David Mortimer AO and Maureen Wheeler for their significant contribution to a most successful year. The Capital Fund aims to give long-term certainty to those who make acts of benefaction, give pledges or offer bequests; and we aim to honour those generous acts in ways which give great pleasure and a sense that comes from belonging to a close and supportive family. We all have a vision to build on the endowment created by the Capital Fund. I am personally so grateful to our loyal supporters whose generosity ensures the certainty of funding for our national opera company. The Opera Australia Capital Fund was established to build capital reserves to help ensure the ongoing financial viability of Opera Australia.
