Dear Film Enthusiasts,
Welcome to the 2013 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival! Delaware’s oldest and largest film
festival is celebrating its 16th anniversary this year. I congratulate the Rehoboth Beach Film Society on this
accomplishment, and am proud that the State of Delaware, Division of the Arts is once again co-sponsor of the
premiere Mid-Atlantic Film event.
The Festival has become a grand celebration of film culture in Rehoboth and the even sold close to 19,000
tickets in 2012. The great combination of American and International full length, documentaries and short
films combined with educational seminars, opportunity to rub shoulders with celebrities and family friendly
entertainment is what makes the event so special.
Once again this year, one particularly deserving student film director will be the recipient of the Morris and
Roslyn Fierberg Student Film Award, which will be announced at the Festival along with the audience favorite
winning films this year. This year’s Country Spotlight will feature Germany in order to facilitate audiences
learning about the German film industry as well as the culture and traditions of its people.

2013 represents a year of “newness” for the Rehoboth Beach Film Society. As reported last year, the
Membership Committee started to work on ways to improve the membership structure. The following
goals guided the process:

A proposed restructuring was presented to several focus groups representing all membership levels

during the early summer. In response to focus group feedback, adjustments were made to the proposed Rehoboth Beach Film Society
structure. The new design will be announced in December and launched at the start of 2014!
From a programming perspective, the Film Society has expanded to now being a presenter of The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD
in partnership with the Cape Henlopen Educational Fund. In addition, the Society is conducting a Film Appreciation class for ninth
graders at Sussex Academy as part of the school’s arts education component. Both of these new services will broaden the Society’s
outreach.
The Film Society’s headquarters is in a building that was moved from downtown Rehoboth Beach to its current location in the early
1970s. Recently it underwent several improvements and upgrades which will help conserve energy, improve operations, and increase
the property’s value. These modifications also add newness to an old building.
As with every year, this Festival will bring newness to the audience; new films, new friends, and new opportunities to volunteer.

independent films accessible now and throughout the year.

As Joe Sees It
Remember the game you played as a kid; you throw a dart at a world map (or variation where you flip quickly
through the pages of a world atlas) and where it stopped was the place you were going to visit or move? It
seems that is how this year’s Festival developed. The programming dart was thrown at the film map and
the results are a wonderful variety of languages, countries, and cultures. Without specifically looking for
films within one region the dart often found its way to the Middle East with films from Afghanistan (The
Patience Stone), Saudi Arabia (Wadjda), Egypt (Uprising and Cairo 678) and Lebanon (The Attack).
A surprising destination for the dart was North Korea (yes I said NORTH) where we find Comrade Kim
Goes Flying, a little gem of a film that harkens back to the good old family films of the 50s and 60s in all its
technicolor glory. The opposite is the documentary Camp 14 – Total Control Zone, on the horrific conditions
of a man born into a North Korean work camp who escapes and tells his story.
Not straying too far, the dart also landed close to home in the USA where terrific films highlight a broad
scope of subjects. Let The Fire Burn reminds us of the MOVE organization which spurred violence and
strained race relations in Philadelphia. Blue Caprice follows the actions of the DC Snipers, which shook
many of us to the core, and the film will do the same. A Baltimore native Divine is beautifully documented
in the delightful I Am Divine. Those are just a few of the many films with local connections and the Regional
Showcase one again brings even more.

This year’s COUNTRY SPOTLIGHT showcases Germany with a variety of genres and styles, accompanied by a terrific seminar
highlighting the industry of German film. Speaking of seminars, our Friday seminar blends current events and film while taking a look
at Egypt and the current and future impact of the revolution. Finally, Liane Hansen interviews Brian Geraghty discussing his path to
success.
I could go on and on and on, but instead I’ll end by suggesting you grab a Festival program, a dart and throw your way to film festival bliss.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Film Festival
1 Read the program
4 Purchase tickets
The program contains film descriptions, screening times,
details on seminars and events, and all the additional information
you need.
For All Attendees
Purchase a separate ticket for each film.
General admission ticket: $10
Member ticket: $9 for the member only
Sunday after 1:00 pm: $6
All Film Society members receive a Festival Program and ticket
ordering materials in early October.
Beginning in mid-October, the program is posted online at
www.rehobothfilm.com and distributed to the public locally.
Limits on tickets. To preserve an equitable distribution of tickets, an individual may purchase only two tickets per film title. For more important information about
Ticket Sales Policies, including scheduling requirements,
please visit www.rehobothfilm.com/festival_ticket_info.html.
Programs can be purchased at the Festival’s Information Booth
for $1.00 each.
Please take note of our sponsors and advertisers. Their ads
provide useful information about restaurants, lodging, shopping,
and services in the area.
Get a number. Numbers are frequently distributed in
the Big Tent to eliminate the need to stand in a long line
to buy tickets. Look for the “Get a Number” sign near the
Box Office.
2 Make a schedule
Change your mind? You may swap tickets for a $1 fee
(per ticket) up to one hour before the start time on the
ticket being exchanged.
Choose films and make a plan. Allow at least 20 minutes
between the end of a film and the start of the next, as the Fire
Marshal requires that everyone exit to the outside and re-enter
through the lobby.
Sell-outs are posted. Check the day’s film schedule
posted in several places in the Big Tent for films that are
sold out. BUT, be sure to check back for tickets that may
be turned in.
Include seminars, socializing, and special events.
Have alternate film choices in case of a sell-out. You
may find that the film you enjoy most is one you didn’t originally
intend to see. Keep an open mind and consider films outside your
comfort zone! Please list alternate films separately, not on your
order form. The RBFS website lists sell-outs that occur during prefestival ticket sales. Audience Favorites that screen on Saturday
and Sunday provide a second chance to see popular films.

Tickets are only sold in the Big Tent Box Office
and are for same-day screenings only. If you are
buying tickets for more than one film, please complete
the standard order form available online, in the Festival
program (page 18), and in the Big Tent.

Additional Information
Become a Film Society Member. You may easily join the Rehoboth
Beach Film Society by registering online, by mail, in-person at the
Film Society office, or at the membership booth in the Big Tent .
Payment options. Only cash, Visa, or MasterCard are accepted as
payment for tickets, membership, and merchandise. Cash payment
only at the Beverage Booth, please.
Parking. Cars parked in non-defined spaces may be towed by the
theater management at the car owner’s expense.
Food. Enjoy food, beverages, and good conversation as you relax in
the Big Tent. Alcoholic beverages may not leave the tent.
Recycling. Help us make this a Go Green Festival by disposing of
recyclables in the appropriate recycling containers.
Merchandise. Inventory is limited, so buy your Festival souvenirs
early. Quality gifts are available at reasonable prices.
Pets are not permitted in the Big Tent or theaters. A PAT-certified
service dog may accompany its owner.
Lost & found is located at the Info Booth in the Big Tent.
5 See films!
Movies at Midway management does not allow backpacks, large
bags, or outside beverages of any kind in the theater.
Lining up. Approximately 30 minutes before the film starts,
lines form in the theater hallway. Lines are marked for each
film and volunteers will guide you.
Theater lights are programmed to partially illuminate at the start
of credits and fully illuminate when credits are over. For your safety,
remain seated until the lights are on full strength.
Priority seating. As a benefit to some levels of
membership and sponsorship, priority seating badge holders
may enter the theater early and save one seat.
No cameras or other recording devices may be used during film
screenings. Please turn off all electronic devices (cell phones,
beepers, etc.).
Saving seats. You may save one seat only.
Theater accessibility. An elevator is available to the upstairs
screening room. Ask any theater employee for help.
Leaving the theater. At the end of each film, everyone is
required to exit to the outside.
Audience Award Winners. All audience members are
encouraged to evaluate every film they see. Deposit your
rating ticket stub/ballot as you exit the theater. Votes are
tallied throughout the Festival and prizes are announced at
Sunday’s Closing Celebration.
Theater temperatures. Temperatures in each theater will
fluctuate due to audience size and location of fans.
Theater trash removal. Please take your trash with you as you
exit the theater and deposit in a trash receptacle.

About The Cover
The theme for the 16th anniversary of the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival
was inspired by Damon Pla’s acrylic on canvas titled “Old Man and The Must See.”
“Old Man and The Must See” is based around the fascination of a combination of machines
working together to serve one purpose, accentuating a journey, not a destination. In this
case, emphasizing the work of the camera, not the subject being filmed.
Damon Pla
When Damon started the drawing, he wanted to combine a gaggle of old cameras to
create a new entity. While composing this shape, he often thought of the sounds it
would make, the movements it would create, the functions of the reels giving life to
this new being...like a beating heart. This made the creation process more organic. As
he sketched out the camera, the idea of a fisher above entered the stage and naturally
helped enhance the creature-like quality of the newly composed camera. Suddenly,
the sounds, movement and functions presented a new fascination, now that the
camera lived underwater.
For Damon, the connection between the fisherman and camera is similar to seeing an
iceberg. Only a small fraction of the iceberg shows above water and the bottom is left
up to the viewer to imagine the rest. He says, “Although we can see the camera just
below the old man’s boat, it is the imagination of the old man himself, not knowing

what he is angling for, is the most intriguing.”
Born in South Florida, Damon Pla was drawn to express himself through art at an early age. Upon completing various
portfolio classes in high school, his advanced drawing and painting skills led him to pursue commercial and private
commissions soon after graduation. After a decade of large scale projects throughout Florida and neighboring regions,
the largely self-taught artist moved to Delaware to absorb a different landscape.

Asunción, Paraguay, people scramble to get by any way

detective. Bob takes the blame and is sent to prison

to bother his partner. Yet when kindhearted Tone
organizes a pleasant evening party for friends and
colleagues in their newly acquired home, Henrik takes
off, preferring his high school buddies, who share his
fondness for wild pranks and crude humor. His inept
behavior, however, masks an insecure individual who

Darcy” tote may be tattered, but even in her thirties, she

The rebuilding of ground zero is one of the most
architecturally, politically, and emotionally complex
urban renewal projects in American history. From the
beginning, the effort has been fraught with controversy,
delays and politics. The struggle has encompassed eleven
years, nineteen government agencies, a dozen projects and
over $20 billion. Aside from the staggering engineering
challenges of the site itself, a major complicating factor
in the rebuilding of the World Trade Center is the sheer
number of interested parties. Politicians, developers,
architects, insurance companies, local residents, and
relatives of 9/11 victims all profess a claim to the site

Congo and other paramilitary gangsters murdered over a
million alleged Communists and still consider themselves

African-American MOVE organization and Philadelphia
authorities. “Let the fire burn” were the fateful
words that may or may not have been spoken by one
Philadelphia authority on an intense and confusing day
that destroyed a community. Documenting the personal
stories of neighborhood residents, MOVE members
and officials through extensive archival footage of
court hearings, news broadcasts, home movies and
interviews, Osder leaves no stone unturned, save the

New Orleans Gospel at a Crossroads

By and By tells the story of the Electrifying Crown Seekers, a family-based New
Orleans gospel quartet facing an uncertain future in a post-Katrina environment.
Many venues the groups played at were destroyed by the storm, and their audience
has decreased because displaced residents have not returned and the interest of
younger folks has moved away from traditional gospel. The generational differences
within the community are starkly represented by Keith Williams, 25-year-old son of
the quartet’s founder. While raised within the quartet style of performance, Keith is
equally enamored of choir, and worship, and modern celebrations of faith. By and
By isn’t exactly what you might expect when you read the words “gospel quartet”
& “post-Katrina.” It is largely a father-and-son story, a classic story of change vs.
tradition, and a story of preserving a legacy.

Pieces of Tangier explores Tangier Island, Virginia, a remote watermen’s community founded
in the 1600’s. The 450 people living there are fighting to preserve their way of life against the
triple threat of government regulations, population decline, and erosion. Despite Tangier’s
close proximity to Pocomoke, the director’s hometown, she was unaware of this community’s
struggle and found it problematic that she knew little about it. Since learning of the threat to this
historical and inimitable place, she has made it a goal to increase awareness so that others in
the region and the country can become involved in the preservation of Tangier.

Out of the Fire
The director is a former resident of DC and the subjects are
from outside of Charlottesville, VA
Out of the Fire is a film that offers a rare, absorbing look into the little-known world
of wood-firing potters. In the film, potters Kevin Crowe, Krista Loomans, and their
crew undertake a four-day, high-temperature kiln firing, in which nearly 2000
handcrafted pots are at stake. The film explores the importance of creating an
authentic, purpose-driven, artistic life through focused choices. Woven throughout
are themes of risk-taking, following one’s heart, and letting go. The high stakes
drive this gripping story, as nearly half a year’s worth of work–and income–are
in the kiln. During this kiln firing, by design, many elements are out of Kevin’s
control, yet he takes a leap of faith, engaging in an uncertain process and trusting

The details of the 1968 Catonsville Nine anti-Vietnam War protest are well known:
a group of citizens, led by devout Catholics, interrupted the daily activity of a draft
board in Catonsville, Maryland, took numerous potential draftee records outside,
burned them with homemade napalm, and waited for the authorities to arrest
them. National news, an acclaimed play, and a movie produced by Gregory Peck
document the protest and trial. What is not largely known about this protest and
others that followed is the focus of this poignant and well-researched film. From
that remarkable protest in Catonsville, a series of similar protests sprang up in
cities as diverse as Camden, NJ and Rochester, NY. Each one followed a similar

pattern, but each protest had its own leadership and its own personality. In every
community a dialogue ensued that focused on the biggest political and moral
issues of the day. These non-violent protests proved to be a stunningly effective
method of communication, and entertaining and enlightening material for a film.
As political discussion grows in awkward fits and starts around the world, it is a
perfect time to be engaged by this slice of American history.

In 2011, Egyptian youth used Facebook, Twitter, and
YouTube to initiate a peaceful protest against the sadistic
dictator, Hosni Mubarak and his corrupt regime. The
response was phenomenal. Thousands upon thousands
of Egyptians showed up with the numbers increasing as
the protest continued. In response to Mubarak’s refusal
to resign and the growing presence of his police and
security forces, the protest developed into a revolution.
How long can the revolution continue and how will it
impact the country’s social and political structures?
What are the new realities that have sprung from the
revolution and how are they manifesting themselves into
the daily lives of Egyptian citizens? Will the effects seen
domestically have any bearing on a global scale?
Two of this year’s films can directly speak to this subject;
one basically about the revolution and the other a
manifestation of the evolution side of the equation.
Focusing on the revolution is Fredrik Stanton’s documentary
Uprising (Page 68) which takes you into the very heart and
soul of the Egyptian people in ways newspapers and
newscasts could not. It is a first-hand account of the
people who had enough and decided it was time to take
a stand.
Focusing on the country’s evolution is the Egyptian
feature, Cairo 678 (Page 36). The film tells the fictional
story, based on true events, of three courageous
women who revolt against cultural and societal norms
that tolerate sexual harassment against women. They
too had enough and decided it was time to stand up for
themselves, each other, and the women of Egypt. They
brought about the first sexual harassment suit in the
history of Egypt.
So please join us as we learn more about Egypt from a
remarkable panel of speakers sure to enlighten, educate,
and possibly even enrage the audience. Guests include
Egyptian activist Mokhtar Kamel, Filmmaker Fredrik
Stanton, and moderator Todd Ruffner, Advocacy Associate
at the Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED). There
will be plenty of time for questions and answers as there
are sure to be many.
Mokhtar Kamel
has been a political activist for about 9 years and is presently the Communication Director of the Alliance of Egyptian Americans, an
NGO working on the democratization in Egypt and the empowering of Egyptians in the US. Mokhtar Kamel graduated from the School of
Economics and Political Science in Cairo University. While in Egypt in the seventies, he worked as a journalist and an editor for the Egyptian
TV and Broadcasting Corporation in Cairo. He later joined the IMF from 1980 to 2001, after which he focused on voluntary work with Egyptian
American NGOs.
Fredrik Stanton
is the award-winning author of Great Negotiations: Agreements that Changed the Modern World. A graduate of Columbia University, he is a
John C. Whitehead Fellow of the Foreign Policy Association. He has appeared on C-Span’s Washington Journal and Voice of America, and his
writing has been published in the Washington Post.com, Forbes.com, Politico, the Boston Herald and the United Nations Association’s
A Global Agenda. Uprising, a spell-binding documentary film about the Egyptian revolution is his most recent accomplishment. He is the
former president and publisher of the Columbia Daily Spectator. He has served as an election monitor in Armenia, the Republic of Georgia,
Bosnia, Kosovo and Azerbaijan.
Todd Ruffner
is the Advocacy Associate at the Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED). He has studied the Middle East since 2005, including nearly a
year spent living in Cairo and Damascus. He previously served as a policy assistant at POMED and the National Iranian American Council.
Todd received his master’s degree from the Ohio State University’s Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Program with a concentration on
Iran-Iraq border disputes, and his bachelor’s degree from Elon University with a focus on the Muslim Brotherhood during the presidency of
Gamal Abdel Nasser. He is proficient in Persian and also studied Arabic for 5 years, having spent time at the American University in Cairo

FORMATIVE YEARS 1895-1918: Since it began in 1895,
German Cinema has emerged and developed in distinct
stages based on the social, political and economic climate
of the country. Shortly after movie making began in France
and America, German engineers developed improvements
in film projectors, projection techniques and camera work.
German cinema grew quickly going from fairground booths
to storefront showings to free standing movie houses.
German films progressed from shorts to artistic features.
Governmental and private production companies were
developed and Babelsberg was established as the largest
film studio, Germany’s equivalent to Hollywood.
among them, Marlene Dietrich & Peter Lorre. Everything
was taken over by the Third Reich. While pure entertainment
was still being produced, many films were mandated to be
for education and propaganda purposes.
The Golden Age of German Film/The Weimar Era 19181933: Following WWI, German economy took a downfall but
filmmaking continued to prosper. “Expressionist” films were
made to reflect stories of the people and their hopes for the
future. Mystery, horror, psychological thrillers, and crime
were common themes, all made with elaborate sets and
dramatic lighting: Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr Caligeri, Boese
THE NEW GERMAN CINEMA 1960-1980: A select group of
German directors collectively worked to revive the industry
making films that were German for the German people. Their
dedicated commitment and hard work let German cinema
rise once again to vibrancy.
& Wegener’s The Golem: How He Came Into the World, and
the introduction of one of the world’s favorite vampires
in Mumau’s Nosferatu . The German people loved movies
and filmmakers loved the German people. However, many
renowned directors considered an invitation to Hollywood as
the golden mark of success. Lubitsch (Madame Dubarry) and
Murnau were two of the first to immigrate to America. The
ever-popular director, Fritz Lang (Metropolis, M) remained
patriotic to Germany, but when the Third Reich took over, he
accepted Mary Pickford’s invitation to come to Hollywood.
NAZI GERMANY 1933-1945: The regime of the Third Reich
profoundly affected the country, its people and its cinema.
Over 1,500 cinema professionals emigrated out of Germany;
POST WAR GERMANY 1945-1960: Following WWII, Germany
was a country divided and quite wounded. East Germany
was under Soviet governance, which quickly resurrected
cinemas showing mostly older films. West Germany was
under American & British governance with 70% of the films
imported from these countries. German filmmakers were
unable to find finances or producers
TODAY’S GERMAN CINEMA: Alive and growing. The German
Film Academy was established in 2003. Like our Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, its mission is to support
the art of filmmaking and the education of filmmakers.
Germany now has four film schools and the German Federal
Commission for Culture & the Media established the German
Federal Film Fund offering generous grants to producers.

Dr. Peter C. Pfeiffer
Dr. Peter C. Pfeiffer is Professor of German and affiliated faculty member in the Program in Film and Media Studies at Georgetown
University in Washington, DC. He holds a PhD from the University of California at Irvine and has published extensively on 19th and 20th
century German and Austrian literature and culture, including film. He was chair of the German department for more than ten years
and held other administrative positions. He teaches and lectures on film regularly and has worked with film clubs in the DC area when
they were showing recent German movies.

We are so pleased to have with us this year Brian Geraghty and Liane Hansen. Brian
has ties to the beach, as his father Dennis is a resident of Lewes, DE. Liane has retired
to Bethany Beach, Delaware.
A CONVERSATION WITH was designed to give an inside look into
the life of an actor, director or working professional in the Film
industry. The audience is immersed in a conversation between
a guest and interviewer in an intimate yet expansive dialogue
that not only informs but also entertains. A mix of first hand
accounts of the who, what, where, when and how of the industry
with personal anecdotes thrown in. Ever wonder what motivates
a person to become an actor? What steps are then taken to fulfill
the dream and what were the struggles along the way? Join this
year’s guest Brian Geraghty and interviewer Liane Hansen to
uncover answers to these questions and many, many more. In
addition plenty of time will be available for audience members
to ask questions.
Brian Geraghty
Brian Geraghty is a New Jersey native. Shortly after graduation he went to Manhattan to attend the acclaimed Neighborhood Playhouse
School of Theatre and thus a career was born.
Brian has amassed over thirty film roles including Kilimanjaro, screening in this year’s festival. Brian also starred opposite Denzel
Washington in the critically-acclaimed Flight. He also appeared in the Sundance hit Ass Backwards, and two recent indie films Refuge and
Gay Dude as well as the academy award winning The Hurt Locker.
TV and stage are also a big part of Brian’s career. TV credits include the upcoming fourth season of Boardwalk Empire, True Blood, Law
and Order: Special Victims Unit, Law and Order, The Sopranos and Ed. On stage Brian was seen in Berlin, Midnight Moonlight, Snipers and
Romeo and Juliet. Most recently Brian starred opposite Martin Sheen and Frances Conroy in the Los Angeles production of The Subject
Was Roses.
An ardent surfer, and surf instructor Brian is an active supporter of the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization
working to preserve oceans, waves and beaches. Another organization he supports is TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), a
resource for anyone who has suffered the loss of a military loved one, regardless of relationship to the deceased. They meet their mission
by providing peer-based support, crisis care, casualty casework assistance and grief and trauma resources.
Geraghty currently resides in Los Angeles.
Liane Hansen
Liane Hansen is an Emmy and Peabody Award winning journalist and radio personality with a devoted nationwide following from her
decades as a host at National Public Radio. After retirement from Weekend Edition Sunday and a move to Bethany Beach, Delaware, she
joined the board of WDDE 91.1 FM, the first Delaware-based NPR News station currently celebrating its first anniversary on the air.
This summer, Liane was a featured performer in The Sound of Music and La Cage Aux Folles at the Clear Space Theatre Company in
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. She also was one of 24 speakers at TEDx Wilmington.

Germany is a country well known for its hearty foods, robust beers, autumn festivals,
automobiles (Beetle, Mercedes, Audi), musicians (Beethoven, Bach, Mozart) and
intense political history, but not for its cinema. German culture & history has
provided much material for film makers the world over. Yet German Cinema is
unique in itself, with a tumultuous yet amazing history. Today, it is vibrant, alive and thriving. So this year, we want
to shine the spotlight on Germany’s rich film history and its contributions to the industry and the art.
German films have certainly made their way West; they have won three Oscars for “Best Foreign Language
Film” out of 18 nominations in that category: 1979: Voker Schlondorff’s Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum), 2002:
Caroline Link’s Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in Africa); her 2nd nomination and 2006: Florian Henckel von
Donnersmarck’s Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others). The 1983 Oscars saw Wolfgang Peterson’s Das
Boot (The Boat) nominated in six categories, the Oscar record for a German film.
The Berlin Film Festival, started in 1951, has survived through Germany’s turbulent years and continues to be one
of the best in the world. Its “Golden Bear” award is as respected as the German Film Academy’s Bundesfilmpreis
(LOLA) awards & our own Oscars®. The Lola awards receive the highest endowment from the German Ministry
of Culture. The most recent LOLA awards bestowed many prizes to films in this year’s festival. Oh Boy, the little
independent film that beat all the commercial films, received a surprising 6 LOLA’s including Best Film. The
Best Actress LOLA was given to the star of Hannah Arendt. More Than Honey took home the honor as the Best
Documentary. The 2011 LOLA for Best Picture was given to the film, Vincent Wants to Sea, which was screened at
the RBIFF that same year and was one the best rated films.
German culture has influenced films made in neighboring countries, primarily Austria & Switzerland. This year’s
festival will include Kuma, a gripping Austrian film. We also are pleased to have with us Professor Peter C.
Pfeiffer from Georgetown University; an expert on German film, he will give you a guided tour through its history
in a seminar on Saturday morning, November 9 from 9am – 10:30am in the Big Tent (bump out) (See Page 91 for
more information).

Morris & Roslyn Fierberg Student Film Award (2013)
Both Morris and Roz were actively involved in the development of the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and its
award-winning Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. In the Festival’s early years, their retail skills
were instrumental in starting a Merchandise Booth. They also assisted with reviewing films, recruiting
additional volunteers, and encouraging others to attend the Festival. Being quite resourceful, Roz and Morris
persuaded two of their sons, producer/director Andrew (Andy) Fierberg and Director of Photography Stephen,
to participate by allowing their films to be exhibited, facilitating seminars, and conducting post screening Q&A
sessions. The involvement of the Fierberg family will always be greatly appreciated.
The Morris and Roslyn Fierberg Student Film Award Endowment Fund was established in 2004 in memory
of Morris Fierberg. The fund’s name was expanded to include Roslyn just prior to her passing in 2010. The
purpose of this award program is to encourage student film production by acknowledging the outstanding
work of a student film director. Full-time high school or undergraduate students from the United States are
eligible to participate.
Each year a review panel screens and rates each submission on originality, execution and overall quality. This
year the Committee reviewed eighteen submissions (15 features and three documentaries) from students of
nine states. The first place award is a $1,000 cash prize and the Honorable Mention award is a $250 Staples
gift card.
First Place: Andrej Landin
Andrej Landin was born and raised in Sweden. At age 20 he moved to the US to pursue a degree in film. After
three years at Santa Barbara City College, Andrej moved to Orange County to attend Chapman University’s
Dodge College of Film and Media Arts program. Andrej’s film, Into the Silent Sea, deals with the personal
and political climate of the space race in the 1960s. The film revolves around the theme of solitude and
despite our differences as people, we all have a universal bond of empathy. [2013, USA, Runtime: 25 min,
USA, Not rated]
Honorable Mention: Owen Schwartzbard
Owen Schwartzbard grew up making movies in the bayous and suburbs of Houston, Texas. His interest
in storytelling through film led him to study at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media
Arts, from which he recently graduated. He plans to continue writing and directing in an effort to share
meaningful stories and continue to expand his knowledge of filmmaking. Owen’s film, The Bluff, focuses on
one teenager’s conscience as he realizes his error in an attempt to illustrate the importance of individual
morality over societal pressure and expectations. [2013, USA, Runtime : 20 min, USA, Not rated]

Save The Date: January 17-19, 2014
What Makes Us Tick? is a three-part analytical film series that explores aspects of the human experience.
Each film includes a post-screening discussion led by a mental health professional. 2014’s theme is “Portraits
of Intimacy: exploring the bonds of family, friendship, love and betrayal”. Three films, Brick Lane, After
the Wedding, and The Intouchables , will be used to explore aspects of some of our most intense relations
with others. The films illustrate the joy and strength that grow from the bonds of close friendships, family,
and romantic love, as well as the pain experienced by betrayal. Post screening discussions will look at how
individuals are transformed by these bonds of intimacy and attachment, and how relationships change.

A Rehoboth Beach Film Society membership
is based on quarterly expiration dates, a
commonly accepted practice among memberbased organizations. All memberships end on
one of four dates: March 31, June 30, September
30 or December 31. Each membership includes
benefits for one November Film Festival.
