History of
Thorp
T
horp in 1870 was a land of timber; the abundant pines and hardwoods were the base
of the areas first industries, in shingles, barrel staves and charcoal. The earth furnished
red clay for bricks used to construct businesses and homes, many of which are still in use.
When James and Ephrime Boardman built the first cabins, there were no roads, not even
an Indian trail for a guide. The homestead was ten miles from a neighbor, with camps of
Chippewa Indians in what are now the townships of Reseburg, Worden and Butler.
New settlers followed; trails, and then roads were carved out of the wilderness. Farms
sprang up on the fertile land, and schools, saloons, general stores and churches were
established. Within ten years, there was the beginning of a thriving community. The Village
of Thorp was established on May 29, 1893, with a population of 883. In April 1948, the
Village of Thorp became the City of Thorp with a population of 1,052.
In the early 1900’s, dairying was so well established, farmers brought cheese makers to the
area to begin processing our now famous cheeses. These cheeses and traditional sausages
can still be purchased as you travel through our beautiful four-season area.
The original Boardman and Indian trails became part of the famous Yellowstone Trail. In
the 1920’s, this road, which ran from Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, to Puget Sound in
Washington, was the nation’s first interstate highway to be completed. In Clark County, it
is now identified as Highway’s County Road X and State Highway 73. The four corners in
Thorp, State Highway 73 and County Road X, are now marked with the yellow stones and
signs, which marked the original road. A new movement is in progress to not only retrace
the trail in Clark County, but throughout the State of Wisconsin.
Helping the Thorp
Community Prosper!
The Thorp Area Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to strengthen the local economy and serve
as a voice of business in community affairs, while recognizing that a healthy business climate is a
requirement for a healthy community. Without the support and dedication of our Chamber members,
these events and many others would not be possible.

Stop in & step back in time to
DISCOVER how a small
logging camp developed into a
thriving, rural Wisconsin community!
Our exhibits showcase the stories of people, businesses & the agricultural impact
that helped our community become what we are today - a place to belong.
The Thorp Area Historical Society collects & displays . . .
history, genealogies & artifacts of the area & world
which have affected the local way of life.
We also have a growing collection of early period farm equipment,
machinery, clothing, household items, books & war memories.
Included in a portion of our building is the
Telephone Heritage Room. While walking
through the museum, you will be able to see over 100
telephones from around the world. They date back to
1894 and include tree-shaped wall phones, Eiffel Tower
desk phones and other unique models. The museum
portrays the history of individual telephone companies in the state,
preserving the stages of development and demonstrating through
its displays the progression of the telephone industry from the late
1800’s to the present. Visitors will also be able to look back and see
the development of the telephone industry, from hand-made
wooden phones with porcelain receivers, to modern day
touch-tone and cellular car phones. It is the only museum
of this kind in the state of Wisconsin, and the Thorp Area
Historical Society is proud to have the opportunity to share
it with the rest of the world.
We are located at 307 W Birch St., 2 blocks west of Washington St.

Thorp’s Amazing
Grazing Cows
By Marene Crabtree
H
ave you ever seen a purple cow? A cow in rubber boots? Or one wearing swim
trunks and goggles? Life-size themed cows like these roam around freely in
Thorp, Wisconsin, where we’re so “head over hooves” for our herd that we let them out
to pasture for everyone to enjoy! True . . . there might be other cities and towns that
have cow replicas, but ours are unique.
Each of our cows pays tribute to the dairy and agricultural heritage of our community—
after all, Thorp is part of Clark County, the #1 county in Wisconsin for dairy farms,
milk production, and number of cows (only living, breathing cows were included in
this statistic—ours didn’t count)! Thorp’s bovine beauties do count, however, in terms
of the pride they convey for the people, places, and events that make our community a
wonderful place to call home . . . and a fabulous place to visit!
Check off all the cows as you “Moo-ve” around Thorp. It’ll be “udderly” fun!

Thorp Dairy
Days
By Jenny Burkhardt
T
horp Dairy Days has been an annual event happening the first
weekend in June that is well known around the area for decades.
Hundreds of people attend, including people that come from the
surrounding communities. Many families come and enjoy the carnival
along with the food stands run by local businesses and organizations.
All of the stands have the BEST of what they offer. Some of the well
known items are the Famous Nolechek’s Brats and Homemade French
Fries at the Lion’s & Lioness stand, Grilled Chicken with all of the
fixings at the American Legion stand, Burgers and Fresh Deep Fried
Cheese Curds at the St. Bernard/St. Hedwig Church stand and
finally Freshly Baked Pies from the Historical Society stand.
There are three pulls put on each day which include Mini-Rod,
Truck, and Tractor Pulls. There is also a Kiddie Tractor Pull on
Saturday afternoon for all of the children to get a taste of Tractor
Pulling. Music is under the pavilion all three days consisting of a
local DJ’s and a live Polka Band on Sunday. There’s fun to be had
for all ages, so come join us this year.

Thorp Pumpkin
Fest
By Karen Andruszkiewicz
T
horp is the place to be the first Saturday in October! It’s the Thorp Pumpkin Fest
from 9 am – 4 pm. Downtown Thorp is filled with excitement as Festers come to
enjoy the one-day event. The air is crisp and the smell of fall is in the air – or is it the
freshly-baked pumpkin items lining the street?
Indoors and on the street, plenty of fun for both young and old alike, horse-drawn
wagon rides, petting zoo, and inflatables including a bungee jump. A variety of
music up and down the street adds to the festive environment. Sit a spell and listen
to the Thorp High School Band and Chorus. Stop at the Legion Hall
and tap your toes to a Polka Band. With over 200 craft and food
vendors, you’re sure to find something you just have to have.
What a great time to start your Christmas shopping! Don’t
forget to check out the “Biggest Pumpkin”.
There’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy at

Holland’s Family Cheese
By Kimberly Rabuck
I
n November of 2006, Marieke Penterman, along with her husband Rolf and one other
team member made a batch of Gouda cheese with the intensions of starting up a small
retail store and keeping themselves supplied with the cheese they so greatly missed from
their homeland – The Netherlands. Shortly after winning her first gold award at the
United States Cheese Championship in February of 2007, her small retail store turned
into a nation-wide supplier of her handcrafted, artisan, farmstead Gouda Cheese.
Eight years, and over one hundred world and national awards later, her team has
grown to over 30 members, and they now have a brand new, modern dairy farm and
creamery right off highway 29 in Thorp, Wisconsin. Rolf and his team milk 300 cows on
Penterman Farm and supply Holland’s Family Cheese with fresh, rBGH-free milk that
goes from cow to cheese in five hours. Their milking parlor and cheese-making rooms
are equipped with large viewing windows, and they offer a variety of tour options you
can read about on their new website, www.mariekegouda.com.
Plan to stop in at their annual Open House the last Saturday in July to enjoy many
family-friendly activities as well as free tours of their farm and creamery, local vendors,
live auction and of course, samples of their award-winning Marieke Gouda Cheese.
Contact their retail store by calling (715) 669-5230 or shop online and ship anywhere at

Yellowstone Trail
T
Explore the history of the Yellowstone Trail
that runs through Thorp, WI
here are seven unique towns along the Yellowstone Trail (County X). They offer a
buffet of little gems like small community parks, turn of the century churches, quaint
restaurants and American history.
In 1912, roads were dirt wagon roads – dust and mud. Citizens gathered to improve and
connect local roads to make the first coast-to-coast route in the northern tier of states: The
Yellowstone Trail. In 1918, Wisconsin was the first to number its automobile highways and
governments were starting to fund good roads. By 1929, the Yellowstone Trail was the first
Wisconsin highway to be paved with concrete all across the state.
Thorp(e) - Railroad telegraphers dropped the (e) from founder Joseph Gilbert Thorpe’s
name. This lawyer, lumber baron and State Senator lived in Eau Claire, but never in his
eponymous town. Thorp’s Yellowstone Trail Park is so named because it is on the Trail,
(Stanley St., Co. X). The park recently received that name due to a resurgence of interest in
the Yellowstone Trail. Outdoor activities there include ice skating and summer live music.
Almost two decades ago, local resident Arnoldine Gulcynski was instrumental in reviving
interest in the Trail in the area by placing markers at the main intersection in town, Stanley
St. (Co. X, YT) and Co. M. At the same intersection is Bob’s Corner Service and next to that
Bolt’s of Fun Quilt Shop. In the 1920s and 1930s, Al Capone, the famous Chicago gangster,
frequently stopped at this station on his way to his hideout in northern Wisconsin. At the
same intersection sits the present Heritage Court Motel in a 100 year old building. There is
a large yellow rock on the corner of Hwy. X and Gorman Ave. marking the Trail.
