TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY
CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION
Black History Month
"We should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history.
What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the
history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious
prejudice." -Carter Woodson
We gather as god’s people

Spirit of Life
Spirit of life, come unto me.
Sing in my heart, all the stirrings of compassion.
Blow in the wind, rise in the sea,
Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.
Roots hold me close, wings set me free,
Spirit of life, come to me, come to me.
*Call to Worship
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God
And the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
And also with you.
There are moments when the “veil” between heaven
and earth, between the holy and the mundane, is opaque.
Not quite visible, not totally obscured.
The thin place of a not yet – but soon-to-be kind of experience.
A mountain top experience –

a moment of transfiguration
when we know God is here
and we know that God knows we are here.
In the bread and in the wine, Jesus took common things
And made of them a sacrament, his spirit alive among people.
And in the sharing, we know God is here.
And we know that God knows we are here.
God calls us as we gather,
to bring the common things of our lives.
The desire for good, the struggle to be genuine,
the efforts to succeed in life.
Calls us to dedicate all these things for God’s purpose,
That God may make them instruments
of God’s love and grace in our day and in the world.
Let us worship God!

Shine, Jesus Shine
Lord, the light of Your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness shining;
Jesus, Light of the World shine upon us.
Set us free by the truth You now bring us.
Shine on me (clap clap) Shine on me (clap clap)
Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory.
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;
Send forth Your Word, Lord and let there be light.
Lord, I come to Your awesome presence
From the shadows in to Your radiance;
By the blood I may enter Your brightness,
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness.
Shine on me (clap clap) Shine on me (clap clap)
Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory.
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.

here we have tasted your goodness
and hungered for a world more just.
Though the world is afflicted by
brokenness and division,
here we have heard your call
to be a people of healing community.
Everyday we touch our limits,
yet here we have received the
fullness of your grace.
Transform our lives, O God,
Then send us forth,
in faith, in hope and in love. Amen.
WE GO FORTH AS GOD’S PEOPLE
Hymn VU#402
We Are One
Blessing and Sending Forth
Sung Benediction
May the light of God shine on us today May the light of God shine on us today May it show us where to travel,
lead us back if we should stray;
May the light of God shine of us today.
May the love of God live in us today May the love of God live in us today May the warmth we feel within us
show in all we do and say
9
We await the advent of his coming again.
Remembering the Community in Prayer
At this time, we remember as Christ remembered . . .
. . . And now together . . . the prayer . . . saying: Our Father . . .
Blessing of the Bread and Wine
Holy God, we pray for your Spirit.
Make us, though many, one.
Make us, though broken, whole.
Make us, despite death, alive.
Make us strong in faith and love, that we may become truly human,
as Christ was truly human.
Come, Holy Spirit, come.
(Presider breaks the bread)
The bread that we break is the bread of life.
and our sharing in the life of Christ.
(Presider holds up the wine)
The cup for which we give thanks is the cup of blessing.
And our sharing in the work of Christ.
SHARING THE BREAD AND CUP
Bread for the Journey
The Wine of Arrival
Post Communion Prayer
Almighty and most gracious God,
though we live in a world of need,
8
Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;
Send forth Your Word, Lord and let there be light.
As we gaze on Your kingly brightness,
So our faces display Your likeness;
Ever changing from glory to glory,
Mirror’d here may our lives tell Your story
Shine on me (clap clap) Shine on me (clap clap)
Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory.
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;
Send forth Your Word, Lord and let there be light.

*Doxology
Oh what a wonderful gift.
Oh what a wonderful gift.
God gives lives of hope and love.
Oh, what a wonderful gift.
So as we bring our gifts, and offer them with prayer,
May we be people seeking peace and justice every where
Oh what a wonderful gift.
Oh what a wonderful gift.
God gives lives of hope and love.
Oh, what a wonderful gift.

Hymn VU#467
One Bread, One Body
Call to Give Thanks
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
The story of Creation
In the beginning God made the world.
Made it and mothered it.
Shaped it and fathered it.
Rock, earth and sea, gave it firmament and beauty.
Filled it with seed, God’s sign of eternity.
Filled it with life, with song and variety.
All that is green, blue, deep, high, solid or fragile,
God’s is the hand that created you.
All that is tender, firm, fragrant and curious.
God’s is the hand that created you.
All that crawls, flies, swims, walks or is motionless,
God’s is the hand that created you.
6
All that speaks, signs, cries, laughs, doubts or keeps silence,
God’s is the hand that created you.
All that suffers, wonders, lacks,
limps or longs for an end,
God’s is the hand that created you.
The world and all that is in it, belongs to God.
The earth and all its people.
And together we praise you and raise to you our song:
Holy, holy, holy God,
power of life and love.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory!
Hosanna through the ages!
Blessed is the one who comes
to bring your justice to the earth.
Hosanna in the highest!
In the time of God’s choosing, God sent the Son,
Sent him, reared him and risked him.
Bone of our bone, flesh of our flesh.
The Word became flesh.
Loved by the least, feared by the powerful.
Deserted by his listeners, denied by his friends.
Skilled carpenter and homeless wayfarer,
Christ, God’s own son.
Feeder, teacher, healer, forgiver of the unforgivable.
Christ, God’s own son.
Lover of the unlovable, toucher of the untouchable,
Christ, God’s own son.
He lived among us, He was one of us . . . Great is the mystery of faith
and so according to his commandment,
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
