Pershing Avenue, Stockton, CA July 2 - September 13, 2015 2015 Pastels USA Best of Show The Deal by Nancy MacDonald “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. : : Vincent Van Gogh : : From the President of The Pastel Society of the West Coast THE PASTEL SOCIETY of the WEST COAST welcomes you to the 29th annual International Open Exhibition of “Pastels USA”. I would like to thank the many talented artists who entered our exhibition. There were many exceptional works from artists from all over the United States as well as foreign countries. I would also like to thank the Haggin Museum for allowing us to present our exhibition at their wonderful gallery and museum. The Haggin Museum has been a true supporter of our Society over many years. Without our donors and sponsors, we would not be able to put together an exhibition of this prestige and magnitude. They continue to make “Pastels USA” a successful show in support of our artists and society. Our Jurors of Selection had the arduous task of selecting the accepted paintings from the large number of submitted, excellent works. Thank you for your conscientious efforts in this difficult, decision making process. Our jurors are Mike Beeman from Cheyenne, Wyoming, Alain Picard from Southbury, Connecticut, and Vianna Szabo from Romeo, Michigan. Special thanks to our awards judge, Terri Ford for selecting those paintings in the exhibit that were deserving of extra recognition. Terri Ford lives in San Jose, California. Thank you to Jerry Boyd, our Show Chair for this event. Jerry spends an enormous amount of time and effort working with the artists on the details of their entries. I know, we as board members, and the artists who enter this exhibit are appreciative of the care and dedication he brings to the task of Show Chair. Tina Moore, Vice President and Awards Chair, along with Susan Goodmundson, have been instrumental in the success of this show. A very special thank you goes to Linda Roemisch, our Ways and Means Chair, who makes our awards possible through the essential contacts with our sponsors and Marianne Harris, our Publications Designer, who has designed the catalog for this exhibition. These two essential Board members help make “Pastels USA” the Impressive event that it is. As a new, incoming President, I am very grateful to the other board members for their support: Willo Balfrey, David Kalbach, Marie Gonzales and Margo Schulzke, our founder. The decisions of this wonderful group of individuals continue to make this exhibit a success. Thanks to all who gave of your time, resources, monetary or product gifts, and expertise to make “Pastels USA” possible. Sincerely RUSSELL FRANK President Pastel Society of the West Coast about Pastel End of Season William Merritt Chase Pastel Dancers Edgar Degas Pastel Vincent Van Gogh Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Pastel Pastel is not colored chalk. Pastel is pure pigment– the same pigment used in making all fine art paints. It is the most permanent of all media when applied to a permanent ground and properly framed. There is no oil to cause darkening or cracking, nor other substance or medium to cause fading or blistering. Pastels from the 16th Century exist today, as fresh and alive as the day they were painted! The following is a statement from the Pastel Society of America in New York: Pastel does not refer to pale colors, as the word is commonly used in cosmetic and fashion terminology. The name Pastel comes from the French word “pastische” because the pure, powdered pigment is ground into a paste, with a small amount of gum binder, and then rolled into sticks. The infinite variety of colors in the Pastel palette range from soft and subtle to bold and brilliant. An artwork is created by stroking the sticks of dry pigment across an abrasive ground, embedding the color in the “tooth” of the paper, sandboard or canvas. If the ground is completely covered with Pastel, the work is considered a Pastel painting; leaving much of the ground exposed produces a Pastel sketch. Techniques vary with individual artists. Pastel can be blended or used with visible strokes. The medium is favored by many artists because it allows a spontaneous approach. There is no drying time, and no allowances to be made for a change in color due to drying. Historically, Pastel can be traced back to the 16th century. Its invention is attributed to the German painter Johann Thiele. A Venetian woman artist, Rosalba Carriera was the first to make consistent use of Pastel. Chardin did portraits with an open stroke, while LaTour preferred the blended finish. Thereafter a galaxy of famous artists...Watteau, Copley, Delacroix, Millet, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard, Bonnard, Glackens, Whistler, Thomas Wilmer Dewing,William Merritt Chase... just to list the more familiarnames, used Pastel as finished work rather than preliminary sketches. Edgar Degas was the most prolific user of Pastel, and its champion. His protege, Mary Cassatt, introduced the Impressionists and Pastel to her friends in Philadelphia and Washington, and thus to the United States. In 1983, Sotheby Parke Bernet sold at auction two Degas Pastels for more than $3,000,000 each. Both Pastels were painted about 1880. Today, Pastel paintings have the stature of oil and watercolor as a major fine art medium. Many of our most renowned living artists have distinguished themselves in Pastel, and enriched the art world with this beautiful medium. As with any fine work of art or fine furniture, it is advised not to place a Pastel painting in direct sunlight. When under glass, the sun’s heat can create humidity which could cause moisture damage to develop. Whenever transported or not in a hanging position a Pastel painting should always be placed face up. Portrait of a Young Girl Follower of William Hoare Pastel Woman in Green Pablo Picasso Pastel Juror of Awards Terri Ford is a native Californian. She grew up in the South Bay Area and attended the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. She has been working with pastels since 1987 both in her studio and en plein air. Her emphasis is on the landscape often including architectural elements... bridges, barns, fences, spires. “A single swash of light can easily inspire me.” She became the first person to earn the title Eminent Pastelist by the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2012. She is a Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America and a Distinguished Pastelist in the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Pastel Society of New Mexico. Terri’s pastel paintings have received international recognition and many awards. In 2012 she was the recipient of the Grand Prize in the Pastel Journal Pastel 100 Competition. Her work has been featured in numerous publications that include Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine, Pratique des Arts, The Artist’s Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, American Artist, International Artist, as well as The Richeson Fine Art Series and fine art books “Plein Air New Mexico” and “Art Journey America”. Most recently in May 2015 she received both the Best Pastel and the Plein Air Magazine Award of Excellence at the Carmel Art Festival Plein Air Event. Terri travels frequently to instruct workshops throughout the US and abroad. Jury of Selection Mike Beeman Vianna Szabo Alain Picard Mike Beeman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, works in pastel and oil, in studio and on location, to paint a variety of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes and figures. He is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and a Master Circle artist in the International Association of Pastel Societies. His work has appeared in numerous juried exhibitions and competitions and has received many honors, including the Pastel Journal Silver Award in the 14th Annual Pastel 100 in 2013. Vianna Szabo is known for her expressive use of color that captures a moment in time whether she is painting portraits, landscapes or still life. Born and raised in Michigan, Vianna learned to paint as her children were growing up, they became her inspiration and early models. She is a nationally recognized artist who works in pastel, oil, and watercolor, but favors pastel for its direct and expressive quality. She has won awards in many juried competitions including, The Pastel Society of America, The Portrait Society of America and The International Association of Pastel Societies. Vianna is a popular and passionate instructor and teaches workshops nationally and abroad. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and earned Distinguished Pastellist status in the Pastel Society of the West Coast. She was inducted into the IAPS Master Circle in 2011 and became an IAPS Eminent Pastellist in 2015. Alain Picard earned a BA in illustration from Western CT State University and went on to study at the Art Student’s League in New York City. Picard cites Sargent, Degas, and Sorolla among his artistic influences. A love of light and beauty are immediately apparent in his pastel and oil paintings. Alain’s work has been featured in such publications as The Artist’s Magazine and The Pastel Journal. He’s garnered top awards throughout the Northeast in esteemed exhibitions including the Portrait Society of America, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel Society of America. Alain is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America as well as the Connecticut Pastel Society where he served as President from 2012-2014. In 2004, The Artist’s Magazine highlighted Alain as one of 20 contemporary artists “On the Rise”. He later won the Best Portfolio Award at the 2009 Portrait Society of America Conference in Washington, DC. A frequent workshop instructor and demonstrator for art associations, schools, galleries and museums, he recently demonstrated at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Arts Club in New York City. In an effort to share his passion for art with others, Alain’s first book, “Pastel Basics,” was published in 2013, followed by a series of instructional DVD’s in pastel. His newest book, “Mastering Pastel,” was released on April 29, 2015. Alain lives with his wife and two sons in Southbury, Connecticut. The first Pastels USA National Open Competition was held in 1987. Based in the Sacramento region of California, PSWC has become the second largest pastel society in the United States, with members coast to coast. Each year Pastels USA, our International Open Show attracts over 500 entries. They come from all over North America and as far away as Africa, Turkey and Europe. Awards given amount to over $11,000 each year. Jurors for this prestigious show include artists of the stature of Daniel Greene, Albert Handell, Bob Gerbracht, Doug Dawson, Sally Strand, Duane Wakeham, Margot Schulzke, Richard McKinley Alan Flattmann, and Lorenzo Chavez. The exhibition draws over a thousand art patrons each year. PSWC is honored to be at Art Center Morro Bay in Morro Bay, CA this year. Past venues for Pastels USA include the Art Museum of Los Gatos, the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, CA, and the Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA. Because of PSWC’s reputation, some of the best pastelists in the country are signature members. Signature Status is awarded for acceptance into three Pastels USA Exhibitions or two Pastels USA Exhibits and one award in the PSWC Membership Show. The Distinguished Pastellist rank is awarded to members who receive awards in three Open Shows in a five year period. The Pastel LaureateTM Hall of Fame designation for lifetime achievement in the medium has been awarded thus far to Albert Handell, Daniel Greene, Bob Gerbracht, Margot Schulzke, Marbo Barnard, Duane Wakeham, and Richard McKinley, The current PSWC Board of Directors is dedicated to continuing the momentum started 28 years ago. Besides sponsoring two exhibitions a year, The Pastel Society of the West Coast holds two membership meetings a year featuring demonstrations by accomplished pastelists. We publish a newsletter three times a year providing the latest information on pastel technique, exhibition opportunities and member accomplishments. PSWC also sponsors a scholarship competition each year for high school graduates who will be majoring in art. Given the strong leadership PSWC has enjoyed in its first twenty eight years, we are confident that this society will be around for many years to come. Membership in The Pastel Society of the West Coast is open to all artists working in the historic pastel medium.
