From the Commodore
First, I want to thank our Immediate Past Commodore, Carl
Majeczky for his leadership of the club in 2010. Also,
thanks to Immediate Past Commodore, Ben Thomas who
left the Board after six years of providing leadership to the
club.
If there is one guiding principle that guides all the work and
effort of the Yacht Club Board it is, “Do whatever we can to
meet the needs of our members and exceed their expectations.” To that end countless hours are spent in planning,
organizing, communicating, meeting and executing cruising,
fishing, social and educational events. You can keep up
with all the going‟s-on by regularly visiting our website at
Commodore Ed Hoover
www.jonathanslandingyachtclub.com.
I am also pleased to let you know that we continue to grow in membership with
new member applications being presented for consideration at each board meeting.
Two of our greatest accomplishments so far in 2011 was the record breaking 130
attendance for this year‟s Commodores‟ Ball and the establishment of our Yacht
Club Room at Out of the Blue Restaurant at Loggerhead Marina in JL. Through a
very cordial and collaborative relationship with the restaurant owners, Alan and
Jennifer Cohen, we now have a freshly decorated space identified as the yacht
club‟s home where we will hold meetings and small to medium size events. A special thanks to the Decorating Committee Colette Hoover and Carol McGuire and to
the anonymous donor, a member who helped pay for the painting of the room.

2011 Commodore’s Ball
The 2011 Commodore‟s Ball was celebrated in grand style with a record 130 members and guests in attendance.
“American Pride” was the theme of this year‟s Ball accompanied by the presentation of colors
and a special musical tribute to America by the always popular Street Talk. A special pin (see
photo) was designed for the occasion by Commodore Ed and Colette Hoover with attendees
each receiving one as a memento of the evening.
Memento Pin
The following remarks were shared by Commodore Hoover at this year‟s Ball.
“Organizations represent many things and Jonathan‟s Landing Yacht Club is no exception. Here‟s what I believe we
represent. We are a group of people who love being on the water, exchanging stories about our boating, cruising,
fishing and sailing adventures…especially our misadventures, sharing our best tips on everything from ports of call
to products that reduce those obnoxious black streaks that mar our newly polished hulls. We represent one branch
on the great tree of yachting that has its roots all the way back to 1720 Ireland with the founding of the Cork Water
Club of the Harbour of Cork. Yes, we represent time honored and treasured traditions that we share with hundreds
of other yacht clubs, both large and small, and with whom we share a common passion, appreciation and enjoyment of a great sport.
But, at the heart of our community, and what sets us apart, is the code of the mariner….of looking out for one another, whether that means taking a line when a fellow boater is coming into a strange slip or offering aid when
someone is struggling in nasty seas….of mutual respect marked by saying “Good Job Skipper” when someone, in
fact, makes a less than perfect docking….. because we‟ve all been there….of working as a team wherever and
whenever needed in order to get each other‟s back…. and of gracious goodwill….no matter our station in life….the
hallmark of genuine humility captured in the Fishermans Prayer, “O God, the sea is so great and my boat is so
small”.
These are the things that tie us together as a yachting community and make it such very special place. It is at the
center of what and why we celebrate together tonight and why I am so very honored and proud to serve as your
Commodore for the coming year.”

Board of Governors Adopts Guidelines for Member Club Attire
As is the tradition of most yacht clubs, JLYC members are encouraged to wear the authorized yacht club attire to
yacht club functions. In order to assist members in wearing a standard club attire, if they so choose, the Board
has established the following guidelines. In addition the Board has established both a winter and summer version of the blue blazer uniform to be worn by current and past officers. Member Yacht Club attire is similar to
these uniforms but without officer insignia on the sleeves.
For events and activities when Board Members and Officers wear either the winter or summer blue blazer uniform
members are encouraged to wear either the summer or winter blue blazer yacht club attire. Events when this attire are appropriate include the Welcome Back Dinner Dance, the Annual Meeting, Holiday Cruise, events at other
clubs that require jackets and other events as determined by the Commodore.

JLYC’s New Yacht Club Room
March 14th marked the opening of our newly decorated Yacht Club
Room at Out of the Blue Restaurant at Loggerhead Marina in JL. An
open house was held for our past commodores and officers, as well as
members of the JLGC Board, the JLPOA Board, the DCB, JL Realty and
members of the JLPOA administrative team. Almost forty people enjoyed a complimentary glass of wine and appetizers while they listened
to a terrific presentation on the history and tradition of yacht clubs presented by Joseph Tringali, author of Yachting Customs and Courtesies.
Attendees were able to purchase signed copies of Joe‟s book at a
special JLYC price.
Author Joseph Tringali giving seminar on the
history and traditions of yacht clubs.
The Yacht Club Room provides, for the first time, a meeting and social location specifically
identified as Jonathan‟s Landing Yacht Club. Our name is on the door, our flag flies continuously on the yard arm in front, our club burgee and pictures of our current board are on display. This is made possible through a very special collaborative relationship with Out of the
Blue in which the yacht club paid for refurbishing and redecorating the room in exchange for
free use of the room, preferred pricing for catering of our events, and identifying it as the
physical facility of Jonathan‟s Landing Yacht Club.
Stop by and see the room and call Out of the Blue for a dinner reservation.
A Special Thank You to Our Founding Commodore
Discussions among four boaters in the Fall of 1980 led to the founding of Jonathan‟s Landing
Yacht Club and its first official meeting on February 23, 1990 at The Anchorage. Chet Claudon
was among that founding group and was elected as the Founding Commodore at that meeting.
In an article penned by Chet for local newspapers he wrote, “I guess it was only a matter of
time before Boat Owner members of Jonathan‟s Landing go together in a social organization to
swap tales about record Sailfish (they almost caught), leaky fuel injectors and of course the
relative merits of the „Sailing Yachts‟ versus the powered version….Result—a Yacht Club was
born.”
For over twenty years, Chet not only filled the role of a mid-wife birthing JLYC but as Commodore, Past Commodore. For many of those twenty years, Chet also served as the Judge Advocate,
legal advisor to the Board. At this year‟s Annual Meeting Chet announced his
retirement as Judge Advocate and was recognized by the Board for his many
and varied contributions to the Club. All of us who enjoy the amenities of JLYC
today want to say a big “Thanks Chet” not only for your many years of service
but for your inspiration and dedication to yachting.

Sailfish Club Luncheon ...Success Again!
Almost sixty members and guests participated in this year‟s annual luncheon cruise to Sailfish Club in Palm Beach.
The house specialties of corned beef and bread pudding were as big a hit as always. About half of those attending
arrived by boat. Thanks to Ben and Diane Thomas, “Diane Marie”, John and Regina Smith, “My Way III”, and Ed
and Colette Hoover, “Sunshine II” who provided boat transportation to the event.

2011 Annual Meeting
A packed house attended the 2011 Annual Meeting in January. Commodore Majeczky thanked the Board for
their efforts which led to a very successful year both in terms of membership growth and club activities. Following
reports from the 2010 Officers, Commodore Carl Majeczky announced the change of watch to the newly elected
officers for 2011. You‟ll find them listed on the front page. After serving as Judge Advocate for many years and,
as the founding Commodore of JLYC, Past Commodore Chet Claudon announced his retirement from the Board
and, on behalf of the Board, was presented a plaque of recognition by Commodore Majeczky. Newly elected Commodore Hoover presented Immediate Past Commodore Majeczky with a token of appreciation and his Past
Commodore‟s Pin.

Ladies’ Day at the Breakers
The Women's Auxiliary had an exciting trip to The Breakers in early February. We
were led on a historic tour through the venerable old hotel by James Ponce, Palm
Beach's honorary historian. This gentleman has lived his 92 years in south Florida and knows the history of this area first hand. He explained the opening of the
southlands in conjunction with the building of the railroads. We saw the many
ballrooms with all their portraits and glitter. We were told of bygone days of parties and lengthy stays including a spectacular appearance by "Lady Di". A delicious lunch was served ocean side and we spent some afternoon time in the
shops and gardens of The Breakers. A lovely day was had by all.

Second Annual Croquet Challenge
The JLYCWA again invited the husbands and guests to a day of croquet and lunch
at the Palm Beach Croquet Club. The event was a big hit just like last year! Some
people are actually becoming croquet players. The Club is lovely and they serve a
great lunch on the veranda.
