A
Bringing World-Class Care to Kids in our Community
ll children should be able to reach
for the stars, whether they have
a perfect bill of health or a serious
neurological condition. That’s every parent’s wish,
as well as the vision behind The Children’s Neurological Center (CNC). As part of The New Jersey
Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center, our
facility impacts thousands of families throughout
the tri-state region by providing an extensive network
of premier neurological services designed to give
children the best care, and the best chance for a
healthier future.
pediatric subspecialists who are leaders in their fields,
as well as nurses, technicians, neuropsychologists,
social workers and other professionals dedicated to
bringing world-class neurological care to children
in our communities.
“Our goal is to provide kids with the opportunity to
achieve their potential,” asserted Okey P. Anene,
MD, Director of CNC and Pediatric Services for
JFK Medical Center. The institution boasts an
extraordinary team of highly skilled, board-certified
CNC provides a compassionate, kid-friendly environment that encompasses every discipline, technology and resource a child may need during his or
her journey from diagnosis through recovery.
The facility offers a comprehensive scope of medical
and surgical services for all kinds of childhood
neurological disorders. Among its distinctions,
CNC is the region’s only program with pediatric
neurology, neurosurgery and rehabilitation under
one umbrella; it has the largest radiodiagnostic center for brain tumors in the state.

The Children’s Neurological Center
Families using the services of CNC never
have to travel around the state for specialty
care; they simply walk down the hall. And
that can mean a lot when a child is sick,
undergoing long-term treatment—or when
a family is seeking first class care close to
home.
Our clinical centers of excellence include the
following inpatient and outpatient programs:
Sleep Program
Under the direction of two of the world’s
top authorities in sleep medicine, the
Pediatric Sleep Center at The New Jersey
Neuroscience Institute is the only facility
in the state that provides evaluation and
treatment for all sleep disorders, including
sleep apnea, night terrors, childhood
insomnia, restless leg syndrome and other
problems that collectively impact up to
one-fourth of children under the age of 18.
The program is comprised of an outpatient
center as well as a recently expanded
sleep laboratory for around-the-clock observation and monitoring. Furthermore, its
physicians are published internationally for
their extensive research and oversee a sleep
fellowship program—training and mentoring other doctors pursuing advanced certifications in adult and child sleep medicine.
Neurosurgery
The Children’s Neurological Center has

type of neurological
condition. It is one of a
few centers in New
Jersey with a dedicated
pediatric neurosurgeon
who works collaboratively with additional
subspecialists to employ
the latest minimally
invasive and endoscopic
techniques, including
the gamma knife and
cutting edge neuronavigation
imaging
technology that has
made surgeries safer
and available to children previously diagnosed with “inoperable” tumors.
Brain & Spinal Cord Tumors
Few things are more frightening to parents
than learning their child has cancer. At
CNC, we do everything possible to ease
their fears by providing the most advanced
tools and promising interventions for both
malignant and benign brain and spinal
cord tumors. Our multi-disciplinary team
addresses every aspect of medical care,
incorporating the expertise of pediatric
neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, intensivists, neuro-pathologists, radiation oncologists and numerous other specialties. We
are the only New Jersey facility equipped
with gamma knife technology, a breakthrough treatment for brain
tumors and arteriovenous
malformation (AVM), while
also providing radiosurgery,
intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and
chemotherapy.

tions. A cutting edge video EEG monitoring
unit, for example, measures the brain’s
electrical activity, enabling physicians to
determine the location or origin of seizures
and recommend the best course of treatment. The program’s wide array of interventions includes ketogenic diet, vagus
nerve stimulation and other effective surgical techniques.
Neurobehavioral Disorders
CNC offers a uniquely integrated
approach to neurobehavioral disorders,
such as Autism, learning disabilities,
attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder
(OCD), and movements disorders.
Intervention begins with advanced imaging
modalities, such as state-of-the-art
positron emission tomography (PET) and
computed tomography (CT) scanners to
facilitate accurate diagnoses. Treatments
are tailored to each child and may include
new low-dose medications and recently
introduced parent/child and group therapies.
Epilepsy
Neurological Rehabilitation
CNC welcomes a large
percentage of the state’s
pediatric epilepsy patients
with a program featuring
the newest assessment tools
and therapeutic innova-
At least one-third of CNC’s patients
require rehabilitation, which makes a dedicated pediatric rehab facility a welcome
component of our vast continuum of care.
Housed in the nearby JFK Johnson
Rehabilitation Institute, services of the
Pediatric Rehabilitation Department are
designed for children with any type of
neurological illness or injury impacting
cognitive, physical, emotional, social,
psychological and/or educational functioning. JFK operates one of the state’s largest
outpatient centers of its kind, incorporating
physical, occupational and speech therapy
as well as programs for social development
and other vital skills that help patients
optimize their independence and quality of
life. These services are complemented by
school and community-based programs.
Inpatient Care Unit
When hospitalization is required, CNC
patients are cared for in JFK Medical
Center’s 22-bed inpatient pediatric unit,
which includes a designated special care
unit for critically ill children. Children are
nurtured in a soothing, family-focused
atmosphere that fosters exceptional standards of quality care. The unit is directed
by a board-certified pediatric intensivist
and staffed by physicians and nurses who
are trained and experienced in treating
young patients with neurological problems
and those recovering from surgery.
Additionally, the unit is among the most
“wired” in New Jersey, equipped with computerized charting and medication management systems that maximize patient
safety. ❦

A Message from
the Chairman
Dear Friends,
Spring has arrived and with it a new season for the
JFK Medical Center Foundation. Our organization is
flourishing alongside the seeds of change—from new
leadership, to grand goals and empowering plans for the future.
The past year reflected tremendous strides in JFK Medical Center’s philanthropic
program, as the Foundation generated more than $2.3 million in revenue, an increase
of seven percent over 2005. The monies were raised through numerous initiatives,
topped by our 2006 Annual Appeal, which was the most successful in nearly a decade,
and such events as the Solaris Invitational and JFK Golf Classic. Together, these two
annual traditions generated over $326,000 for the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute,
the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute’s Center for Head Injury and Alzheimer’s
Disease and Dementia programs.
Extraordinary support from the community was paralleled by the unfailing dedication
of the Auxiliary of the JFK Medical Center Foundation. In addition to fulfilling its
record-breaking $3 million pledge to the hospital, the Auxiliary donated an initial
$30,000 on their new $2.5 million pledge. The group’s stewardship and fundraising
efforts exemplify the genuine spirit of charitable giving.
We fully expect to expand on these accomplishments in 2007, positioning the hospital
for accelerated growth and maintaining JFK Medical Center’s reputation as a leading
health care provider. Faced with declining reimbursements for such programs as
Medicare, Medicaid and charity care, the needs of the Medical Center are greater than
ever. The JFK Medical Center Foundation is working diligently to secure resources for
a myriad of quality enhancements, clinical investments and new facilities, and remains
optimistic about the future.
With the sustained generosity of our donors, we are confident that we will continue to
meet the region’s health priorities by fostering a culture of excellence and expanding
our continuum of care. In 2007, we look forward to funding additional enrichments for
the Children’s Neurological Center, construction of a new long-term care facility, and
other essential projects.
As you read this issue of “Touching Lives,” I hope you will share my enthusiasm for
the many exciting things in store for our hospital, our patients and residents of central
New Jersey. On behalf of our Foundation Board and staff, please accept my gratitude
for your ongoing support. I invite you to visit us and see first-hand how your gifts are
making a difference at JFK Medical Center. ❦

Roy Family Honors
Father’s Memory and Legacy
T
$50,001 Gift Advances Cancer Care at JFK Medical Center
he late Dr. Girija N. Roy,
a prominent Scotch Plains veterinarian and community activist,
viewed the achievement of professional
success as an obligation to his family, and
helping the less fortunate as an obligation
to his faith—a greater obligation, and one
that guided his 64 years on earth.
Encapsulated in the Hindi word “seva,”
Dr. Roy dedicated his life to serving others.
“Whether it was service to family, friends,
clients or the community, Papa touched
and improved countless lives in so many
different ways,” said his son, Pryia Roy.
That is why his family decided that the
best way to honor his memory would be to
perpetuate his charitable legacy, while also
honoring an institution that shared his
passion for giving. On the first anniversary
of his passing, in January 2007, the Roy
family along with friends donated $50,001
to JFK Medical Center’s cancer program.
Born in a rural village in Bihar, India,
Dr. Roy immigrated to the United States
in 1971 with about $10 in his pocket and
dreams of new opportunity. He made a
home in Central New Jersey, where he
opened three animal hospitals and practiced
veterinary medicine for 27 years.
Dr. Roy’s allegiance to the profession was
complemented by a social responsibility to
both his homeland and local communities.
He was President of BJANA, an Indian
service organization, and active in numerous
other Hindi causes, while also aiding the
American Red Cross, Rotary International
and various humanitarian efforts. His sons
proudly recall him raising money to help
the sick and underserved abroad, and
treating rescue dogs at the World Trade
Center following the tragedy of September
11. Dr. Roy was extraordinarily generous
in all facets of his life, so it was only fitting
that he received the same compassionate
care during his own family’s time of need.
When Dr. Roy was diagnosed with
cancer, his family traveled to the most
prestigious health care institutions in the
country. “Yet we found that the medical
care provided by a hospital only five miles
from our home far surpassed the care he
received at the more famous institutions,”
“
Don’t wait
until someone is
sick to come into
the hospital…

and make
a difference.

stated Pryia Roy. “The doctors, nurses and
every member of the JFK Medical Center
staff treated my father with the utmost
compassion and respect, and treated our
family as part of their own. They truly
exemplified seva.”
For months, the Roy family thought of the
hospital as their second home, spending
every day and evening by their loved one’s
side. They forged relationships with the
nurses on all shifts, touched by their
consistent acts of kindness.
“They made us feel special,” asserted Mr.
Roy. “That’s why we wanted to give something back to the hospital and other
patients in hope that their experiences
will be similar to ours, and that we can
contribute to improving cancer care for
families in our community.”
The gift of $50,001 was earmarked for
enhancements to the medical center’s
outpatient Infusion Center, including
additional chairs and amenities for
chemotherapy patients as well as advanced
technologies for diagnosing and treating
cancer.
TouchingLives
“We are deeply grateful to the Roy family
and their friends for their philanthropic generosity, which will help JFK
Medical Center provide the highest quality
oncology services,” stated John G.
McDonough, DMD, Chair, JFK Medical
Center Foundation. “The donation enables
us to accommodate more patients in the
Infusion Center while offering a more comfortable environment that alleviates some of
the stress associated with serious illness.”
JFK Medical Center’s modernized Infusion
Center was dedicated in Dr. Roy’s memory
on January 26, 2007. The heart-warming
ceremony was attended by several members
of the hospital and Roy family, as well as
such distinguished guests as Edison Mayor
Jun Choi, Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula
and Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr., who
was a personal friend of Dr. Roy.
“This is not the end of our support, but the
beginning,” said Mr. Roy. “Our family
looks forward to more charitable activities
to help the hospital grow and serve those
in need.”
“We hope to follow in our father’s footsteps,” added Mukesh Roy, who was also
present at the Infusion Center dedication.
“We feel a calling to do more…to volunteer
and inspire others in the community to
come forth and get involved.”
“Don’t wait until someone is sick to come
into the hospital,” he urged. “Come inside
now and make a difference.” ❦

Auxiliary Concludes
Milestone Year
T
he Auxiliary of the JFK
Medical Center Foundation
had plenty to celebrate in 2006, as
it concluded one of the most exciting
years in the organization’s history. At
its General Meeting held in October,
Auxiliary Co-Presidents Judith L. Spiegel
and Doris B. De Sarno presented a check
to John P. McGee, President/CEO of
Solaris Health System, symbolizing the
fulfillment of the Auxiliary’s $3 million
pledge to JFK Medical Center. The pledge
was committed in 2000 and represents the
largest gift ever issued by the Auxiliary.
“This was a thrilling moment for us and a
very big milestone in the life of the
Auxiliary,” stated Mrs. Spiegel.
That donation was followed by a second
check representing the Auxiliary’s initial
payment toward its $2.5 million pledge
to the JFK Medical Center’s 2004 Capital
Campaign. The money is earmarked for
the new ambulatory care building,
which will be named JFK Auxiliary
Ambulatory Care Plaza in honor of the
organization’s generosity.
These landmark gifts were garnered
though the Auxiliary’s ongoing fundraising
initiatives, highlighted in 2006 by the 43rd
Annual Ball, A Touch of Class. Held on
April 29, the event broke the record books
by generating $171,000 while honoring
several of the Auxiliary’s most devoted
supporters: Nossratollah Hooshangi, MD,

Children’s Neurological Center
Guides Boy’s Journey to Success
E
leven-year-old Willie Forsythe
is not just a patient at the
Children’s Neurological Center
(CNC). He’s part of the family.
A division of the New Jersey Neuroscience
Institute and regional leader in pediatric
neurology, CNC has been the central
resource for Willie’s medical care since he
was a toddler. Challenged by a myriad of
complex neurological conditions, he has
grown and thrived under the compassionate
expertise of CNC’s dedicated team of
specialists. He truly exemplifies the unique
commitment between families and clinicians
as they journey together toward healing,
hope and attaining each child’s fullest
potential.
“The staff treats Willie as if he was their
own son…understanding and addressing
his needs, encouraging him, nurturing him,
and helping him be the best he can be,” said
his mom, Deborah Forsythe. In her view,
CNC is far more than a doctors’ office. For
Willie, it is a safe haven that has given him
the comfort, courage and confidence to
succeed.
The Forsythes, formerly residents of South
Plainfield, New Jersey, came to CNC on
the recommendation of their pediatrician
and other trusted childcare professionals.
Dr. Michael Seyffert and Willie Forsythe

disciplinary group of pediatric subspecialists,
Willie was diagnosed with several neurodevelopmental problems and his family
was presented with a clear, coordinated
treatment plan.
“That is what distinguishes the Children’s
Neurological Center from other facilities,”
stated pediatric neurologist Michael Seyffert,
MD, Medical Director, Child Evaluation
Center. “We have many renowned neurological experts under one roof, giving us the
ability to work together, reach a consensus
and provide an integrated
approach to diagnosis and
treatment.”
Willie received occupational, physical and speech
therapy at CNC, showing
dramatic progress within
weeks. A young child with
limited interaction and
vocabulary began singing
songs and conversing with
others, while also learning
how to tie his shoes, button his clothes and even
throw a ball. “This early
intervention gave Willie the self-esteem to
overcome his fears and the freedom to grow
up,” said Mrs. Forsythe. “So when he went
to pre-school, he boarded the bus with a
smile and said ‘See ya, Mom.’ That was
awesome.”
Over the years, Willie has faced additional
hurdles associated with attention deficit/
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep
problems and other neurological complications. According to Dr. Seyffert, ADHD is
the most common childhood neuropsychiatric disorder, affecting close to 10 percent
of all children, and often co-exists with
related medical conditions.
“For that reason, it is so important to treat
the whole child,” asserted Dr. Seyffert.
“The Children’s Neurological Center is
staffed and equipped to handle multiple
issues at the same time and consider every
aspect of a child’s development and wellbeing.”
Although the Forsythes moved to East
Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, CNC has continued to serve as Willie’s primary health
provider. “Everyone at the center—from
the doctors to the technicians—has been
wonderful,” remarked Mrs. Forsythe.
“I don’t mind traveling a little longer to get
Willie the best care.”
Willie has progressed tremendously under
the guidance of CNC, making great strides
in such areas as speech, fine motor coordination and behavioral modification. Now
in the sixth grade, he is excelling in school
and pursuing such interests as karate, soccer and has aspirations of becoming a veterinarian.
“The Children’s Neurological Center
helped Willie emerge into a confident,
more self-reliant child who is leading a full
life,” added Mrs. Forsythe. “They don’t
treat him as a sick kid, but as a person who
is happy being himself…I couldn’t ask for
more.” ❦

Solaris Nurses Feel
the Pull to Magnet
(unaudited)
Total 2006 Revenue of $2,338,153
P
aris may be a continent away, but some hot new
“couture” has surfaced right here at JFK Medical
Center! Every Wednesday, nurses from each floor
don attention-grabbing tee shirts that read “Guess Where
We’re Going?” It’s a spirited way of generating buzz about one
of JFK’s most exciting pursuits…Magnet designation.
In 2005, JFK Medical Center joined Solaris Health System in
a collaborative goal of attaining this coveted recognition for
nursing excellence. The initiative began with a kick-off event
introducing the criteria for achieving Magnet status, which is
awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Armed with confidence and perseverance, nurses embraced
the monumental challenge of proving clinical proficiency and
quality in 14 key areas of nursing practice and set out to identify 165 pieces of evidence that show why JFK Medical Center
ranks among the nation’s best hospitals for nursing care.

With funding from the JFK Medical Center Foundation, a
team of nurses representing 18 hospital departments also set
out to Miami, Florida, where they attended an empowering
Magnet conference. “They came back with a better understanding of Magnet so they could spread the word and champion this critical endeavor at JFK,” stated Laura Mularz,
APRN, BC, MSN, CNS, Clinical Nurse Specialist and
Magnet Coordinator for Solaris. “They garnered valuable
insights into the evaluation process and initiatives implemented at other Magnet institutions.”
JFK has moved toward Magnet by collecting demonstrative
data and launching several innovative programs that further
enhance patient care, nursing retention and recruitment, staff
morale and the ultimate result of better patient outcomes. For
example, the hospital is offering rewards and incentives to
nurses who choose to further their education, seek specialty
certification or join professional organizations. JFK also
gained access to a national database that allows the Medical
Center to benchmark quality improvement measures, productivity, mortality rates and other success indicators against
other hospitals across the country.
“This effort is an extension of JFK’s commitment to providing
outstanding health care. It has unified and motivated our
entire staff, incorporating the support of nursing, physicians
and other disciplines,” said Ms. Mularz. “We’re striving to
achieve Magnet status by 2008.” As one of only about 240
in the country, it will be an honorable distinction for the
hospital and another source of pride for patients and the
community. ❦

A Guide for Giving
y making a gift to JFK
Medical Center (JFKMC)
Foundation you are joining a
group of dedicated and generous community
members who have chosen to help guarantee the future of quality health care at JFK
Medical Center. Outright gifts are the
most common gifts received by the
JFKMC Foundation. Most frequently,
this is in the form of cash by check, credit
card or money order. The Foundation also
welcomes gifts of securities and real property and personal property. Outright gifts
to JFKMC Foundation are tax deductible
as allowed by law.
A gift today of a fixed-dollar amount or
appreciated securities such as stocks or
bonds may allow you to take a current
charitable income tax deduction for the
full market value of the assets contributed.
The Annual Fund
By making a gift through the Annual
Fund, you provide the essential support
needed to expand clinical services and programs for patients, and maintain and
enhance the facility. Annual fund gifts are
generally unrestricted for priority use by
JFK Medical Center.
Matching Gifts
Matching gifts are provided by employers
to encourage community investment and
enable donors to double (or even triple)
their gifts.
earnings on your gift will be used each year
to support medical services and programs
at JFK Medical Center.
Planned Gifts
Planned gifts are arranged during a donor’s
lifetime, however, the benefits to JFK
Medical Center often do not accrue until
the donor or donor’s beneficiaries are
deceased. Bequests are the most common
planned gifts; others include life income
agreements (such as charitable trusts), life
insurance and retirement plans. You can
help JFKMC Foundation plan for the
future by informing us of your planned
gift.
Bequest
A bequest is an outright or residual gift
made through your will.
Life Income Gift

financial stability, security and growth.
Gifts to the endowment are a permanent
investment in the mission and goals of JFK
Medical Center. Your gift can be directed
to the general endowment fund—named
endowment funds can be established for a
gift of $25,000 and above. The investment
By establishing a charitable trust you can
make a gift and retain the right to receive
income payments for life. Gifts to charitable
trusts entitle you to a current tax deduction
and allow you to avoid capital gains tax.
Gift of Life Insurance
JFKMC Foundation can be named as a
beneficiary, co-beneficiary or a successor
beneficiary to receive the proceeds in the
event the primary beneficiary is no longer
living.
Retirement Plans
The Foundation can be named as a beneficiary, co-beneficiary or contingent beneficiary of your Individual Retirement
Account (IRA), Keogh Plan 401(K),
403(b) or other qualified pension plan.
Tribute/Memorial Gifts
Throughout the year, gifts are made to
JFKMC Foundation to commemorate a
special event, such as the birth of a child,
an anniversary or birthday; a new job, promotion or retirement; or gifts to perpetuate the memory of a loved one, family
member, friend, mentor or colleague. The
individual or family honored by the gift is
sent an acknowledgement stating that a
gift has been made.
To make a gift or pledge to the Annual
Fund, for more information or to schedule
a tour, call the JFK Medical Center
Foundation at 732-632-1540.
Life insurance may be a means to make a
much larger gift than you thought possible.
