LAS LAP LIME
2013 LAS LAP LIME: FETE FUH SO!
L
ike the theme says, it’s FETE FUH SO in 2013. Four live bands for the entertainment pleasure of 2013 attendees. The music
will be continuous, beginning at noon and going until 9:00 pm. Limers can come out and FETE FUH SO to the sweet sweetsoca sounds of the Fuh Fun and SureFire Bands, the Panatics steel orchestra, Jahrusalem and the incredible TeeCee.
For the uninitiated, the Las Lap Lime
is an annual event held jointly by five
non-profit Guyanese Alumni Associations resident in Toronto, Ontario. It is
the largest congregation of Guyanese
outside Guyana.
This social event ensures that Guyanese culture remains vibrant in the
diaspora by celebrating what it means
to be Guyanese through entertainment,
food, drink and ‘liming’. The event provides a taste of Guyanese culture to the
children, grandchildren and friends of
Guyanese living in the diaspora.
This year’s Lime will be held on Monday
August 5 at the Woodbridge Fairgrounds,
located at 100 Porter Avenue. Kipling and
Hwy 7 is the nearest major intersection.
This year’s Lime will have a new
introduction in the form of a “Passport.”
The passport costs $40, and contains
$50 worth of passes. These include 2 admission tickets, which alone are worth
$30, bar and food vouchers and more.
Truly great value at a 20% discount.
For those attending this year’s Lime
with their better half or a friend, purchasing a Passport makes great sense.

This is the best value offered in quite a
few years. But...get them early as only a
very limited amount will be available.
Las Lap lime’s organizers have also
added a whopping 14,000 additional
square feet of parking spaces for the
comfort and convenience of those
attending. A brand new configuration
has resulted in uninterrupted visibility of the stage from anywhere on the
grounds.
There’s no longer any need to stand in
front of the stage to listen to the music
and see the bands – they will be fully
visible from in the bar or kids areas,
while chatting with friends at the food
stalls, even to those “limin” in the general area.
A surprise food item has also been
introduced exclusively for the bar area.
Deliciously enjoyable it won’t be available anywhere else on the grounds. But
the only way to enjoy it will be from
within the Bar Area, which will be even
bigger this year, with more shade for the
comfort of its patrons.
It’s FETE FUH SO in 2013. Come
enjoy the Lime on August 5th!

Las Lap Lime: 18 Years And Counting!
2
013 marks the 18th year
of the Las Lap Lime.
The event was started
in 1995 by the 5 individual
alumni associations (Toronto
chapters) of St. Stanislaus
College, Queens College, Bishops High School, St. Roses
High School and St. Joseph’s
High School.
The Las Lap Lime’s (LLL) aim is to
raise funds in support of higher education in Guyana. The Lime’s profits are
divided into 5 and returned to the 5
alumni associations. Each association
determines what they will spend their
funds in support of, depending on the
requests they receive from Guyana.
To date the Lime’s proceeds have been
used towards scholarships, building
and stocking libraries, rebuilt school
grounds, equipping state of the art
computer labs, painting and refurbishing parts of the 5 schools, replacing
roofs and windows and countless other
worthwhile
and necessary
projects.
Although
there is no accurate measurement, the
Las Lap Lime
is now arguably
the single largest gathering
of Guyanese
people anywhere in the
world outside
of Guyana.
From humble
beginnings of
a few hundred
attending, the
Lime now routinely attracts attendances
in excess of 4,000 people most years.
The Lime’s activities revolve around
all day entertainment. Its entertainment
usually runs the gamut, but focuses on
Guyana’s culture and heritage as portrayed by steelbands, Guyanese bands,
Afro and Indo Guyanese acts and dancers. Guyanese cuisine and beverages are
also available throughout the grounds.
As the Lime’s Project Manager, Paul
Abdool oversees the entire event on
behalf of the 5 associations, from the
smallest detail to the biggest contract.
The event takes a full year to plan and
execute. In his words “throwing a party
for 4000 people is no simple task – it’s
interesting but very time consuming.
Without a doubt it is second job!”
After 18 years, the Las Lap Lime
has now become far more than the
humble fundraising event it was
originally intended it to be. It is now
in effect a cultural franchise that
Guyanese expect and look forward to.
Plans are now made around the Las
Lap Lime, travel plans and vacations
are booked to coincide with the event;
reunions (family, friends, associations, schools, independent social
clubs) are organized around the LLL
to name a few. As such, the Lime’s organizers fully intend for it to continue
in its current format, well into the
foreseeable future.

LAS LAP LIME
Guyanese Schools Benefit
From Las Lap Lime’s Proceeds
hroughout the years,
the question continues
to be asked, and rightfully so “who benefits?”
The Las Lap Lime is owned by 5
alumni associations (Queens, Saints,
Bishops, St Josephs and St. Roses).
After an annual audit, the profit
from the Lime is divided equally into
5 parts (20%) and returned to the 5
Associations.
Prior to this, the schools recognize
the role that Canada has played in
the Lime’s development. As such each
school instructs the Lime to donate
$500 from the profits to a local charity
of their choice. Consequently, a deduction of $2500 is deducted prior
to dividing the profits. The
local organizations that have
benefitted from this throughout the Lime’s 18 years
are too many to list,
but some are: the Herbie Fund, The
Canadian Red Cross, Covenant House,
The Canadian Cancer Society, Guyana
Christian Charities and many others.
The 5 schools have benefitted enormously throughout the years from the
involvement of the Toronto Chapters
of the 5 alumni associations. Bishops
High School as an example estimates
having contributed well over half a
million dollars in financial and non-financial aid over their 28 years in existence. St. Joseph’s is currently contributing a significant sum to build a hard
court basketball court and rebuild the
school’s grounds. The intent is to have
the school rent the new court and new
field to local sports teams and organizations as a revenue generator for
years to come. All of the 5 associations
have similar projects. St. Stanislaus
endowment fund guarantees the college will have necessary funds available
for years to come.
Queens College is
currently applying
for charitable in the
hope of establishing
a similar endowment fund.

Las Lap Lime An Annual Party For 4,000
W
By Paul Abdool
hat goes in to organizing a party for
approximately 4,000
people?
First there has to be a compelling motive. Canada is a new home
to most of us that attend the Lime. It
is a country that has adopted us and
encouraged us to contribute our various talents to its overall strength as
a nation. The talents that Guyanese
supply, the work ethic and expertise
we proudly bring to this new land were
nurtured and developed by the five
schools of our youth.
These schools, and by association our
teachers can lay honest and deserving
claim, at least in part, to the fact that
they were the driving force behind the
adults we have become. We feel that
the young minds that are currently in
Guyana deserve the same opportunities
we had to develop into the best that they
can possibly be. Striving for academic
excellence has always been the primary
objective of the five associations that
own the Las Lap Lime. There is little
doubt that the current and future students in Guyana have the same potential
waiting to be developed. The Las Lap
Lime, through its five member associations, provides some of the funds that
are desperately needed to develop this
potential.
Secondly there has to be a method, a
tried and tested process for organizing
an event of the Lime’s magnitude year

after year? As the Project Manager of
the Las Lap Lime, I am responsible for
every aspect of the event, but it would
be impossible for me to do it all on my
own. Consider just a few of the facts:
Alumni Association Toronto
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS CONTRIBUTING TO EDUCATION IN GUYANA
WHAT HAVE WE DONE?
2013

Shipped $18,000 + of equipment and materials to St. Stanislaus
College including a $4,000.00 printer.

Donated through St. Stanislaus College, 40 work stations to the
DOOBAY Medical Centre at Annadale, E.C.D.

Raised $6,000 + at our Spring Dance.

Celebrated our 20th anniversary at our May 10th GALA.

Added $$ to our ENDOWMENT FUND which now has a value in
excess of $150,000.
Last 20 Years

Donated equipment, materials, cash for projects at St. Stanislaus
College valued at over $500,000 CAD.

We even sent $6,000 CAD to rehabilitate the Training Centre at the
SAINTS Farm after the Guyana tsunami. To save the milking cows,
they were moved into the classrooms, literally.
Our School motto drives us :
The Lime attracts over 4,000 guests
annually. Each year, liquor permits
have to applied for and obtained, event
and noise permits have to be acquired,
contracts have to be negotiated,
volunteers have to be assigned and
scheduled, police and security have to
be booked and sponsorship presentations have to be designed and executed
months in advance of the event. We
design and print 7,000 admission tickets, Las Lap Lime dollars, flyers and
posters and parking tickets and secure
distribution outlets for ticket sales. We
determine strategies for parking 2,000
cars, design and layout tent and gate
placement and crowd control. Some
of the numbers on food and drink
are astounding. Our volunteers serve
750 pounds of black pudding, 3,500
bottles of water, 2,000 coconuts, and
7,000 bottles of beer. Our vendors
serve over 2,300 individual curry and
roti meals, 1,500 BBQ chicken dinners
and countless traditional Guyanese
snacks including patties, pine tarts
and sweets. Throughout the year we
estimate some 300 meetings, most
from sub-committees. It takes 40
plus people to deal with logistics, 400
man-hours to run the bar, a small
army for security and the gates and
incredible organizational and negotiation skills to book and schedule acts
from Noon to 9:00 pm.
I could never accomplish all of this
in a year. Rather, as such we appoint
eight extremely skillful and dedicated
Managers to accomplish most of these
tasks. The eight portfolios that make
up our management team are Security,
Food, Bar, Gate, Entertainment, Budget,
Treasury & Logistics. These men and
women work tirelessly for a year to ensure that our function is a success. They
give willingly without taking, tackling
each job with professionalism and a
work ethic that is inspiring. They are the
reason that our event runs as smoothly
as it does, working behind the scenes
to make that first Monday in August a
memorable day for all of us.
