West Virginia University Site: Challenge: Solution
West Virginia University Site: Milan Puskar Stadium is the home of the West Virginia University (WVU) Mountaineers football team. Since 1891, the Mountaineers have been uniting WVU fans at NCAA Division 1A athletic events and on game days the stadium sees crowds of over 60,000, making it the largest population center in West Virginia. For indoor sports, the 14,000-seat WVU Coliseum is home to the Mountaineers basketball teams in addition to a variety of other sports, plus concerts and events. Challenge: Universities rely on the excitement generated by their sports programs to draw interest to their academic programs and help maintain high application rates. In addition, a fully realized athletics program should bring additional revenue to the school through concessions, souvenirs and advertising. WVU needed a complete sports entertainment solution that would help to support all of these objectives while generating excitement and inspiring fans and players at athletic events. Solution: The new digital signage solution at Puskar Stadium includes an LED screen which is three times wider than the system it replaced in the south end zone, with higher resolution LED quality. Two new full-color LED fascia boards running down each sideline display game and scoring information. Two additional LED auxiliary matrix boards in the south end zone replace older discrete digit scoring systems, now allowing a wide variety of in-game statistics. All screens also display messaging, game statistics and sponsor advertising. In the Coliseum, the dynamic video solution includes a center-hung, four-sided LED video replay system. Halo boards above and below the LED show live event coverage and real-time statistics as well as replays, messaging, sponsor advertising, and graphics. Two additional new LED auxiliary matrix boards in each backcourt zone and a completely new LED scorer's table at courtside display in-game statistics. The new video systems are capable of displaying both standard definition and HD content in bright, vivid colors. On par with professional sports arenas, these LEDs deliver quality, performance and incremental revenue-generation potential – along with fan and team excitement – many times greater than the static panels and display systems they replaced.
