Official Online Magazine of the Mustang Six
Apr. 17, 2015 VOLUME NO. 2 ISSUE NO. 8 Official Online Magazine of the Mustang Six Association Welcome to THE SIX BANGER, the online magazine of M6A. Our Association is dedicated to all six cylinder Mustangs of all years , both inline 6’s and V-6’s. Membership is open to all who own a 6 cylinder Mustang. There’s no cost to join, and all we ask is that each member submit a few stories and pictures of their car or an article of interest concerning their 6 cylinder Mustang each year, so it can be published in our online magazine and website. Our online magazine is sent to the editors of several major Mustang publications including Mustang Times and Mustang Monthly Magazine. Both have published M6A members pictures and stories in their magazines and on their websites. ITS NOT “JUST A SIX” ITS PART OF THE LEGACY OF THE MUSTANG! After a lot of thought and talking to myself, and yes I did answer myself back occasionally, I ‘ve decided to change sending the magazine to every three weeks.. This edition was already well in the works, and I wanted to share the magazine’s new image and layout. The next edition of THE SIX BANGER will be sent out May 8th Those who follow us on Facebook already know about this, but I want to share this exciting news again! Toward the end of last year, we started a campaign called 500 in 15, We set a goal for M6A to have 500 members by the end of 2015. Because of the great job that our members are doing telling other Mustang 6 cylinder owners about us, and the publicity generated by us being in Mustang Monthly, we met and exceeded that goal in the first week of April! I think it’s a real possibility that we could have 750 members by the end of the year, because “M6A CAN DO IT”! Our website is also benefiting from our new found fame, we had a record setting 398 people visit our site on April 4th. I’m also happy to say that we have sold our first batch of 100 embroidered emblems, but not to worry, I’ve ordered and already received another batch of 100. These emblems are only available by contacting me, they are not sold in our online store. Prices and ordering information can be found on our website. With the show and cruise-in season starting to get into full swing, let the other car enthusiasts, and the Mustang community know you’re a proud part of M6A by displaying an emblem on you and a decal on your windshield! The online registration for our Show on Sept 12th is now open, also included is a link to a page that has links to all the hotels which have rooms blocked, as well as links for directions and locations, of stores, restaurants and car washes in and around Mustang. Ok. We are needing people to help judge or show, be scribes, and for just general all around help. When you register for the show, you can also let us know if your be able to help. The Oklahoma Mustang Cub who is co-sponsoring our show, is holding their own car show at the very same time and place as ours, so their people are already going to be spread very thin. We have had a few people already volunteer to help, but we are going to need many more, please consider volunteering to help so we can make our First Show an outstanding success. It’s hard to believe it’s only five months to the Show, time sure flies when your having fun! We are still looking for individuals and corporations to be sponsors for our Show to cover the cost of our award trophies. If you would like to be a sponsor or have someone you’d like for me to contact about being a sponsor please let me know. Have a great day and don’t forget to hug your loved ones and then your Mustang! 3 INLINE SIX CLASSICS MY 65th BIRTHDAY PRESENT Text and photos by Gary Cundiff For many years, I had wanted a Mustang, and came close once, when I found a 83 burgundy metallic 6 w/auto, but didn't get it My wife, bless her, had told me if I saw one that I wanted to go ahead and get it. My daughters neighbor had been piddling with a 67 Moss Green Metallic one, but his daughter thought it was crap, and didn't want it for her 16th birthday. So, he offered it to my wife for $4750.00. The girl got her Chevy Cavalier, and I got my Mustang! The car had no rust, new breaks were installed, it had a new paint, job that was not good just new, and a rebuilt C4 transmission. It also had the original hubcaps and owners manual. The owner also installed new tires and front end gear. I drove it home, added a few pieces of chrome under the hood, got a better paint job on it. I cleaned up the trunk, and got new gaskets for the hood and trunk. The car is Moss Green Metallic, and according to Kevin Marti, and the Marti Report it is a one of one, because of the 2.73 rear gears. She was named "Betty" after Betty Boop. 4 1966 SPRINT PRINT JOHN NOBLE’S 1966 SPRINT Story and photos by John Noble Ford Mustang 1966 Sprint 200 6F07TXXXXXX 65A Z26 13E 21 2 6 This vehicle rolled off the assembly line at the Dearborn assembly plane in Detroit on the 13th May1966. The vehicle was destined for the District Sales Office in Atlanta GA. I first came aware of the Mustang's existence through regular 'vehicle for sale' notices placed every Saturday in one of Christchurch's newspapers over a period several weeks. Over Easter 1997, Diane and my self were scheduled to attend An ex pat Kiwi and his American bride who were living in South Carolina purchased the Mustang in a NZ National Ford Model A rally in Nelson (I also mid 1996 and had the car shipped to Christchurch own a 1930 Model A Tudor 55B) As we would be driving through Christchurch on our way north to in New Zealand where after documentation and testing she was placed on the New Zealand vehi- Nelson I made a decision to stop off and view the cle register equipped with the licence plate/number vehicle. plate UN8135. However several receipts were included with the documentation I was given at the time of purchase show she was owned by a Mr. Miller (senior) of Aitken South Carolina for a period from early 1992 until late 1995 us. My wife Diane didn't speak to me for about 24 hours after that transaction. About 14 days later the Mustang came south to Mosgiel where she still occupies the same position in our garage. 5 1966 SPRINT PRINT As the American license plates are a different size to those here in New Zealand the person who fitted UN8135 bent the plate into a concave shape to allow it to fit the US mounting points. This was solved when we added a NZ personalised plate PURE66 using spacers to take up the gap/s carpets the only other cosmetic item added were a set of 4 White Wall tyre inserts (Flappers) Motor vehicles here in New Zealand pre 2000 have to undergo a six monthly Warrant of Fitness check (WOF) regardless of mileage driven in that 6 month period This safety inspection focuses on the suspension, brakes, lighting, tyres and wheels and seat belts etc. One has to have a current WOF before the vehicle can be reregistered The Mustang is still in its original condition and at some stage of its life the Sauterne Gold exterior colour has be repainted The 200CID engine has been reconditioned as well as having all new brake shoes and wheel cylinders fitted. The interior of the car is still very original thought the carpet has been replaced. Diane now looks forward to outings in 66 as well as the obligatory Sunday ice cream in a cone The Mustang was accepted by the New Zealand Vintage Car Club in their Post 60 class. We have won several trophies in this class at various VCC events around this part of the South Island. Other than the fitting of the new 6 THE V-6 CONNECTION This my 2014 Mustang V6 Coupe Premium. It is my daily driver and shares the garage with a 1965 Mustang hardtop that I have owned for 22 years. The latter is a well optioned California car with a 289-4V engine, automatic transmission, air conditioning, console, power steering, and front disc brakes. BARRY CLAYTONS 2014 PREMIUM EDITION Story and photos by Barry Clayton I purchased my Ruby Red V6 in February 2014. It wasn't the car I was looking for when I walked into the dealership, but between X plan pricing (a great benefit of MCA membership), a $4000 Ford rebate, and a bit of negotiating, it was a no brainer! Options include the Pony package, 6-speed automatic, and comfort package (heated seats, heated mirrors, and Pony projection lamps). I have since added an Airaid cold air intake, Bama custom tune, window tint, hood lift struts, and a gripper trunk mat. The old Mustang is still the "go to" car for weekend cruises and car shows, but I have been impressed with the new Mustang's build quality and performance. It feels solid, handles well, and has plenty of zip, all while getting decent gas mileage. I love the LED sequential taillamps and 18" polished aluminum wheels. The Tri-bar Pony badges on the fenders and horizontal grille bars remind me of my 65. Ford did a great job with the 2015 Mustang but I will hang on to my 2014 V6 a little longer. 7 SIX CUSTOMS MATT ANDREWS 03 V-6 Story and photos by Matt Andrews First I want to say how great it is to have an association for v6 Mustangs. There are different forums and what not and they are all great but this outlet was somewhat missing. To have an online magazine to go with it is also great, I had toyed with the idea in the past but never could find the traction to get it going. So kudos to you guys! My hunt for a mustang began 9 years ago. I got my first grown up job so I wanted to get a grown up car. I found a black 03 vert and was on my way with my dad to go look, test drive and probably put a deposit on it when the dealer called and said they wanted my parents to cosign the financing. I didn't want that, so I said thanks anyway and we skipped that stop. We continued on to Milton, ON to look at the 02 Mineral Grey Coupe. Test drove it, put the deposit down, picked it up the following weekend (yes I drove from the Sault to Toronto back to back weekends to get what I wanted) The car came with a viper alarm, alpine deck and dual 10" alpine subs in a gigantic sub box. A lot has changed since but buying a Mustang was one of the better decisions I have made. The comradery from the Mustang culture is truly something special. I enjoyed it so much so that I started a local club here in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. I'm looking at going the 4.2 route in the future as well as m112 supercharging the car, I am always looking to tinker and improve. 8 SIX CUSTOMS APPEARANCE & FUNCTION MODS GT Fog lights GT Rear Bumper GT Hood Scoop GT throttle body(modified) Custom Mineral Grey Ford Rear trunk Emblem Tinted Headlights with clear corners sequential tail lights HID 6k head and fog lights 8" shorty antenna Mach1 Chin Spoiler Roush Front Grille Delete Roush Trunk Mounted Tool Box 03 Cobra Chrome Replica wheels with BFG Sport Steeda Tri-ax for T5 short throw shifter Steeda Shifter Trim Ring FR 5 speed terminator styled shift knob 06 leather v6 Front seats, modified to be fully functional in the New Edge Bullitt Pedal Set One touch Passenger Window Alpine Full ipod deck Lightnining Audio Front Components Elemental Design 12" Sub Profile Baja 1000 Watt 4 channel amp Custom painted Radio Bezel, Shifter Bezel, Gauge Cluster and door pulls in mineral grey Custom Owners badge on radio bezel and a few other graphics (bumper inserts, 232 hood scoop, MCONO club logos) PERFORMANCE MODS Windstar Upper intake with a custom cold Air pipe Stangwires 9mm Yellow Plug wires ASP 25% Underdrive Crank Pully Mach1 Bolt on Subframe connectors Mach1 Rear Sway bar MAC 2.5" dual exhaust with custom H pipe Ford Ranger 3.73 gears and Ford tlok for 7.5" rear Roush Lower Control arms Roush v6 lowering Springs Monroe Fox body length Shocks and Struts Comp 2s 275/40s on 17x9 upfront and Summitomo 315x35 on 17x10 out back 9 MUSTANG SIX SHOWCASE Gus Skeadas’ 1966 Bruce and Georgia Nelson’s 65 coupe We are the original owners of this 1965 Wimbledon White Mustang hardtop, 6 cyl. We purchased it from Bennett Ford in Bremerton, WA, on April 19, 1965, for $2888.60. It is an automatic, with radio, tinted windshield, full-length console, and visibility group. It has been kept stock, except for a couple safety changes. The seats were reupholstered in 1984, and the car repainted in 1986. The bumpers were rechromed in 1995. Everything else is original. When I was 12, my obsession with Mustangs began after I had been to my uncle’s garage and he started up a 69 Fastback, from that moment on I was a forever to be a Mustang addict/ I was in my twenties and with my girlfriend, who would later become my wife, and I found a 67 fastback for sale and bought it . Unfortunately the car needed a full restoration so I made the sacrifice to sell it and begin my family instead of investing a bunch of money into a project. The years went by and my wife surprised me with the best present I've ever received! A 66 Mustang coupe with a straight 6 , 3 speed manual Springtime Yellow car with a black vinyl top. It has manual brakes and steering , Its something we share together along with the love for Mustangs. We are anxiously awaiting warmer weather for car shows, Drive in movies, and just going as many places in our 66. These inline six engines are great and to know I get to pass it down to my one of my kids. I think I made the right choice instead of just having a project in the garage for years I have a 66 inline 6 that I can share with my fami- 11 A TAIL OF TWO PONIES Upon receiving the car last summer I had plans of taking it to shows, drive ins, and out for cruising the North Georgia Mountains. But first we both had to learn how to drive a stick shift.. It was a fun and at times scary adventure, considering how my wife almost ran into the tree by our driveway. Luckily I survived my wife’s learning. Now with the learning out the way we are so excited to enjoy our car this year 12 IT HAPPENED WITH A SIX Story and pictures by Fred Miller This is just part of my car crazy life. It started with 6 cylinder Fords & has come around to one, again. The photos are of the Mustangs I’ve had. I sold the 89 last November. I have some old photos showing portions of the 50’s Fords, but I’m not sure they would copy well. My car club experiences has included a lot of enjoyable times. I’ve judged at six MCA shows, and am a certified MCA judge for Fox bodies & for occasional driven/daily driven. If it’s not too hot for a guy in his 7th decade , & if I can make it, I’m willing to help judge. If it’s close to one of those triple digit OK days, I can’t stay in the sun for extended times, but could help in some other way in the shade . I’ve twice registered for MCA shows in Mustang. Sickness & a storm each prevented a trip My Ford 6 Banger experiences started before there was a Mustang. My dad had a 54 Ford 6 with O/D. My first car was a 53 Customline 6 with O/D purchased in 1959. It took me back & forth to college over 6 or 7 mountains (depending on whether it was snowing) often with 6 occupants. It was not without some problems. It developed an increasing oil leak the first summer. When the oil pan was removed, a cracked block was discovered at the motor mount. As a replacement was needed, a mechanic friend found us a good engine builder to build a larger displacement 6 banger. This started my 6 banger fun. I had a great time challenging flat head Fords, other maker’s 6’s and an occasional straight 8. I could consistently beat them in a ¼ mile and on a hill climb (lots of experience from the mountain travel). I tore up the rear end within a year, but was able to replace it with a better 4:11. Weather took a toll on the body, so I traveled to my uncle’s and helped them do concrete work. Both my uncle & my cousin were excellent welders, so they cut & welded rusted panels for me. The car always got good gas millage. This was evidenced when I left my uncle’s. I left with a full tank of gas, 2 sandwiches & 2 drinks. I drove through the mountains for 9 hours without stopping. By that time, my tank was full, the Ford’s tank was empty and my right foot had the shakes. I wanted to get home to see my girl (future wife), but came up about 40 miles short. I still made it to her house that evening. My first Mustang was a 1989 GT convertible. It was driven to the Mustang 40’th, Forty Fifth, 50’th, and to 10 MCA Nationals, earning a Blue Grille Medallion. It also was awarded a “Best of Show” at the local all Ford event in 2006. I also acquired a 1999 Limited edition GT convertible. It’s been to MCA Nationals in Utah & Texas. I still show it in regional events. It’s gotten several awards. We bought the 2014 V-6 Premium last year, finally returning to the 6 Banger Ford ranks. It’s been to cruise-in’s and The 53 traveled the Appalachians for many more years. I liked it so much that on area cruises, but yet to attend a I bought a 1959 Ford 6 banger with O/D, show. If we can stay well, and avoid Tropical Storms, I hope to change that (ironically purchased in mid April of 1964). I drove 6 cylinder Fords with the by attending the First Mustang 6 show in Borg -Warner O/D’s for 40 years. I was Mustang, OK. often asked when I was going to purchase a new car. My answer was “When they start making vehicles with overdrive transmissions”. I finally bought a new 5 speed in 1985. I joined my first Ford club in 1986 with the 59. I had reworked the rust and had a friend re-spray the paint years before. It still looked great from 15 feet. After warning up, the 6 was still so quiet you didn’t know is was running. It earned a few awards at local events. Along the way, we had a 79 T-bird. In 1995, it was driven to the First all Ford National at Carlisle where it earned a 2nd in its class. 13 BUSTED KNUCKLE KNOWLEDGE In our last edition, Mort Griggs, was having some problems with his autolite 1100 carburetor. A couple of our members sent me their ideas to help Mort fix his problem, which I passed ion to him. I wanted to share them so others who may be having similar problems could benefit from their advice. From Jim Jackson With the engine off, have Mort look down the throat of his carburetor. He should see a squirt of fuel as soon as he starts to move the accelerator. If there is any delay I would say the accelerator pump is either bad or needs adjusting. A fairly easy thing to adjust by bending the rod that runs the pump. A slight bend will in effect shorten the rod and activate the pump sooner. A $20 rebuild kit will fix a bad accelerator pump if all else is good with the carburetor. From Charles Johns Mort, there are several things that cause stumbling off the line with the 1100 carb. Todays gas is the number one culprit. If it happens only when warm/hot ethanol gas is probably the problem. A phenolic spacer is available for one-barrel carbs that helps. Also a company makes a heat-shield but it must be modified to work properly as parts of the 1100 dashpot linkage hang below the carb base. Set the idle when COOL NOT HOT but with the choke open, then let it warm up and recheck. If needed, readjust. If percolation (vapor-lock) is the problem you will see fuel dumping into the venture with the air cleaner off when hot, and idle will be impossible to set. Our six has the carb directly over the exhaust and Ford runs a radiator hose through the carb base to help cool it…I think!? 190 degree water is not a cooling liquid with alcohol gas so I bypassed the baseplate. With Texas 100 degree days I too have this problem and I am working on it. Make sure the float is set right, Bill Folmar wrote in a few weeks ago with his problem: My question is about my 1979 Mustang coupe with the 200 and manual 3spd + o/d. This was my highschool/ college car and midway through, I damaged the transmission as a result of a spot of road rage, slow driver, late for work, grabbed reverse and squealed tires when parking. I was driving 70 mile commute and after Ford shop said it would cost $650 to repair I bought a Tempo. I still have the car and want to find info on rebuilding or replacing the trans. Do you know of any sources of information? I don't know the model of the trans.I have a 6 cyl T5 but can find no info about adaptability. 14 TO MOD OR NOT TO MOD? THAT IS THE QUESTION! PART 4 INTERIOR Text and photos by Rick Mitchell This is an overview of the interior after it was completed. Adding many small areas of chrome greatly perked up an otherwise very nice looking but plain interior. There are five modifications in this picture. The first are pony and tribar emblems from the '69 Mustang's door panels. Remove the posts and two-sided tape them in. Next are aftermarket billet covers for the forward part of the armrests. The next are door lock covers. They required a dremel to remove some of the lower metal to cleanly lock without jamming. Above them are billet vent covers, and finally billet outside mirror adjustment trim pieces. Starting with the doors, I added aftermarket chrome lock posts and small billet plates inside the lock covers. Here is an aftermarket light switch cover and a set of black '65-'66 pony mats. The mats fit surprisingly well on the driver's side, but there is extra plastic on the right mat overlapping the kick panel, but only by a few inches. These mats look great in my '14! The center stack has three sets of aftermarket billet trim rings. These compliment the 15 TO MOD OR NOT TO MOD, THAT IS THE QUESTION Aftermarket billet emergency brake handle and emergency flasher trim ring. Although difficult to see, there is also a small black pony emblem added to the forward edge of the rear storage hatch that came from trimming a '69 Mustang glove box trim piece. Aftermarket billet seat tilt lever cover. This is a '69 Mustang glove box trim piece that was two-sided taped onto the right side of the dash. A nice addition to the plain right side of the dash panel. This is a '69 Mustang glove box trim piece that was two-sided taped onto the right side of the dash. I need your help to raise $750. The registration fees being collected by the Oklahoma Mustang Club (OMC) are being used to cover all expenses, including t-shirts and the Hospitality Banquet. M6A is responsible for covering the cost of the trophies that will be awarded. We have raised some money but we’re still short, to the tune of $750.00 . I have been emailing potential sponsors for the last few months, and I will continue to till the last days before the show. While M6A is growing, and the Mustang community is finding out about us, we are not well known enough yet, where vendors are lining up to be a sponsor and have their name associated with us. In time that will happen I am sure, but not yet. So I am turning to you, our 500 plus members who receive our online magazine to help M6A raise the rest of the funds we need. If every member would give just $1.50 each we would have enough to totally cover the cost of the trophies. If we happen to raise more than we need, the additional funds would be used to buy door prizes to be given away at the show. There are two ways you can contribute, one would be to send a check made out to the Oklahoma Mustang Club to me, and I will then send them to OMC . You can mail the check to: Mustang Six Association 113 Twin Hills Dr. Madison, TN 37115-2242 Or if you prefer you can contribute through PayPal with this email address and I’ll send them a check [email protected] I think if you send as a gift PayPal doesn’t charge us fees. Thank you in advance for helping your Association Terry 21
