Dear Friends,
This year has been a tremendous celebration of the 50th anniversary of Portledge School.
When I think on what the founders of our wonderful school set out to do, I feel confident that they would be proud of how
Portledge has grown, and been shaped, throughout the last five decades. The path from then to now has been beset with
difficulties and paved with triumphs but one constant remains – the spirit of generosity from the Portledge community, which
provides a guiding light for our journey.
What has been attained, what is being achieved, and what will be accomplished is made possible by the support Portledge
has received. This support comes from the many contributors who have helped provide for the continued level of academic
excellence on display throughout the campus; contributors such as local companies, loyal alumni, valued Portledge parents, and
our esteemed Trustees, both past and present.
Our Annual Fund has exceeded its participation goal, and this year’s 50th Anniversary Auction Gala was a resounding success
and enjoyed by all. I give my sincere thanks to all who have helped organize, and who have participated in, the various fundraising efforts throughout this year.
As I look forward, I know that the tireless work of the Board of Trustees will help guide Portledge towards a bright future.
Capital investment, strategic plans, enrollment growth, marketing presence, and developing a dedicated and knowledgeable
faculty and staff will require strong cooperation from all aspects of our Portledge family.
Thank you for investing in the most valuable asset we have at Portledge; the children.
Gratefully,
Simon Owen-Williams

Board of Trustees
2014-2015
from the
President of the Board
Dear Friends,
This year has been a year of reflection on the past fifty years of Portledge as we
celebrate our golden anniversary. We have built a wonderful legacy over our first fifty
years but it is incumbent on us all to keep our eyes fixed on the future.
There is no doubt that Portledge would not be the institution it is today without the
support it has received from all who are involved with the school. Your continued
assistance is vital to ensuring that Portledge remains in prime position to build on
its past, and work toward skillfully navigating the years ahead. I know I speak for the
whole Board of Trustees in giving you all my sincere and heartfelt thanks for your
help.
As we move forward, the Board of Trustees remains determined to uphold the trust
and responsibilities you have placed upon us in securing the school’s fiscal future.
Sincerely,
Richard Kirikian

S C H O O L
from the
Parents Association President
Dear Friends,
I want to thank you personally for your contribution to this year’s annual fund. I want you to know that your gift this year made
a tremendous difference in the lives of more than 460 students at Portledge. You made the right decision when you opened your
heart and wallet to these children, and we all appreciate what you have done.
Your contributions have had a direct and substantial effect on Portledge. Your gifts have helped attract the best teachers and
students, helped the school keep up with cutting edge technology in the classroom, helped to keep our sports teams in the best
shape, helped our aspiring artists visit the best museums, and helped to send our burgeoning scientists and mathematicians to
world renowned laboratories as they strive to understand our world. Your gift to the annual fund created access, independent
minds, life opportunities, and excited our children about learning.
If you have not been on campus lately, then you might be surprised to see what you are missing. Fifty years after Portledge
was founded, the school is alive and well and prospering. The campus is beautiful and in great shape, the kids are happy and
laughing and learning, the parents are engaged and enthusiastic, and we have you to thank. Come and see it for yourself! And
imagine what the next 50 years hold with you by our side.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for all that you do for Portledge, the school thanks you, and the children thank you…
your support matters to them, perhaps more than you know.
Sincerely,
Maryellen Mooney

A Brief History of
Portledge School
9
P O R T L E D G E
Celebrating our 50th anniversary, Portledge School
recognizes our origin, founded on the Long Island estate of the
Coffin family whose fascinating history can be traced back in
time to the Middle Ages. Throughout the centuries, the Coffins
pioneered new lands and new industries – eventually setting the
scene for one of Long Island’s most prestigious and highly respected
schools.
Sir Richard Coffin, a member of a noble French Norman family,
served as a general under William the Conqueror during the Conquest
of England in 1066. Sir Richard’s estate, called Courtiton, was located
near King William’s home in Falaise, France, and belonged to the
Coffin family until 1796. As part of a reward for loyalty and service, King
William gave Sir Richard the parish of Alwington in Devon, England,
and the surrounding area known as Portledge. This great estate remained
in the Coffin family for more than nine centuries until it was sold in 1998.
In the 17th century, the Coffin family crossed the Atlantic.
Born in 1609, Tristram Coffin left Devonshire for America in 1642.
He settled in Salisbury and, later, Newbury, Massachusetts. In 1659, he
and 10 friends purchased Nantucket Island for the price of 30 pounds and
two beaver hats; together, they founded this historic nautical and whaling
center. Tristram, the most wealthy and respected of the settlers, served
as chief magistrate.
One of Tristram’s many descendants was industrialist Charles
Albert Coffin, born in Somerset, Massachusetts in 1844. Living in Lynn,

Massachusetts, he founded a successful shoe manufacturing firm. His talent
as an inventor, however, was the key to his innovations in electricity
and related technologies. Under his leadership, Thomson-Houston
Electric Company acquired a number of its competitors and gained access
to many key patents in the industry. In the same time period, Thomas
Alva Edison brought together several of his business interests under one
corporation to form Edison General Electric. Subsequently, General
Electric was established by the 1892 merger of Edison General Electric of
Schenectady, New York and Thomson-Houston Electric Company of Lynn,
Massachusetts – both still in operation under the GE banner today. Charles
was a co-founder and the first President, CEO, and Chairman of one of
the United States’ largest and most innovative corporations. The Coffins
resided at their home, now Portledge’s Lower School, built in 1910 in the
hamlet of Matinecock on Long Island.
Marian Cruger Coffin, daughter of Alice C. Coffin and Julian
Ravenel Coffin, was one of the first women to work as a professional
landscape architect in the United States. Born in 1876, she defied social
convention to become one of just four women to enroll at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology to study architecture and landscape design.
She created distinctive designs that incorporated vibrant color, natural
plantings, and functionality for prominent clients including the Fricks,
Vanderbilts, Huttons, and du Ponts. It is fitting that one of this year’s
honorees, James F. Wellington, carries on this tradition as an accomplished
landscape architect whose talents can be seen across Portledge’s beautiful
grounds.

Portledge School on the Coffin’s Estate
In May 1965, the trustees of the AKC Fund gave 63 acres of Alice S.
Coffin’s estate to expand Miss Stoddart’s School for Little People for the
purpose of creating a co-ed college preparatory day school. Portledge
School opened in September of that year under the direction of Mary F.
Jonathan with 100 children in nursery through second grade. One grade
was added each year until the first senior class graduated in 1976.
The Lower School was completed in 1970, and the original Miss
Stoddart’s School building was converted to Stoddart House, the primary
residence for all future headmasters. David S. Staples became the new
headmaster and oversaw the expansion of the Middle and Upper School
Divisions.
In 1977, Huson R. Gregory joined the Portledge School community.
His leadership would span nearly three decades, and leave a lasting impact.
Mr. Gregory developed a full college preparatory curriculum that was
vertically integrated through the school’s three divisions; it prepared
students for success in college, while maintaining the community feel
that Mary Jonathan established at the school’s inception. The renovation
of the Middle School building was completed in 2003 and later named
the Huson R. Gregory Carriage House in honor of this headmaster’s 29 years
of service.
In 2005, Steven L. Hahn was hired as the school’s fourth Head of
School. Under his stewardship, the school saw the revision of Portledge’s
mission statement and strategic plan that define key institutional values
and goals. His many contributions to the school included the growth

of Upper School enrollment, curricular
development in the Lower School, and
strengthening of the athletics program.
Simon Owen-Williams was selected as
Portledge’s fifth Head of School in 2012.
Through his transformational leadership, he
aligned all three divisions behind a set of guiding
principles and teaching models to bring Portledge
to the forefront of modern education. The school
inspires students to excel academically and lead
productive lives in the 21st century.
Simon Owen-Williams,
Head of School
Portledge is now a community of more than 460 students in prenursery through twelfth grade. The school is characterized by strong
student-teacher relationships that reflect in-depth knowledge of all aspects
of development in young children and adolescents. Portledge consistently
provides the structure and support that enable students to grow, take risks,
and build confidence to meet high standards of scholarship and good
citizenship. The school’s administrative leadership and faculty continually
re-assess and refine the programs to meet the changing needs of all students
and families.
“On this Golden Anniversary, we recognize Portledge’s
accomplishments during its first 50 years on the Coffin family’s
homestead; as we prepare for the future, we proudly and gratefully
acknowledge the dedicated community that is the hallmark of
our school.”

Making a Gift
to Portledge School
Gifts to the Annual Fund, Capital Campaigns and
Endowment Funds are all greatly appreciated.
G I F T S O F CA S H

significantly while providing welcome support for
Portledge.

A gift of appreciated securities may be particularly
advantageous, allowing the donor to take a
deduction for the full current value by avoiding
capital gains tax.
PLA N N ED GIF TS
There are a variety of planned giving vehicles
a donor might consider, from bequests of
insurance policies to charitable trust agreements.
Some arrangements will double as investment
opportunities providing the donor or the school
with annual income, some will enhance tax
savings, but all satisfy the philanthropic intention
of the donor. Contact your financial planner for
advice on how to choose the option that will most
benefit you.
M AT C H I N G G I F T S
Many corporations match their employees’ and
retired employees’ charitable contributions with a
contribution of their own. This is an excellent way
to double your gift to the school.
Please contact the Advancement Office at
(516) 750-3205 with any questions, and consult with
your tax advisor.
