CUL to Participate in Navy Pier's 100 Rides Nonprofit Initiative The Chicago Urban League has been selected to participate in Navy Pier's 100 Rides 100 Nonprofit Partnerships initiative. A formal announcement of the 100 nonprofits was made this past Friday on the Pier's 100th birthday and more information about the program will be posted online at www.NavyPier.com. Starbucks Foundation Renews CUL's Opportunity for Youth Grant The Starbucks Foundation has renewed its support of the Chicago Urban League's Opportunity Works program. This year, the program will serve 200 youth, ages 18 to 24, who are currently not enrolled in school, have limited or are in need of skills and are disconnected from the labor market. Like Starbucks, the League recognizes the need to take a very active role in addressing the issue of youth unemployment. In addition to job readiness training and employment placement, Opportunity Works will provide more intensive case management support throughout the duration of the program and up to one year post placement. 2016 Citywide Job Fair a Success Earlier this week, hundreds of job seekers attended the Chicago Urban League's Citywide Job Fair. Hosted by the League's Center for Workforce Development, more than 70 employers participated, and 50 job offers were made on the spot. "By all measures, the 3rd Annual Citywide Job Fair was a success," said Andrew Wells, Dir. of Workforce Development. "This year, we saw greater diversity in the demographics of our applicants as well as diversity in employer participation" CUL's Cate Costa Named Power 30 Under 30 Congratulations to Cate Costa, Director of Entrepreneurship for the Chicago Urban League. Costa was recently named to the Power 30 Under 30 list. Presented by Porsche Cars of North America, Inc., Power 30 Under 30 has been honoring outstanding young professionals around the world for over ten years. The Workforce Development Center works to increase African American employment and income levels through job training and placement services, career exposure, workskills enhancement, seminars, coaching, long-term retention strategies and access to job fairs with employer partners. Through funding from JP Morgan Chase and Co., the Workforce Development Center will serve 150 new individuals through a variety of hard skills training programs, including transportation construction, advanced manufacturing, as well as transportation, distribution and logistics. Additionally, the funding supports the League's Opportunity Works Youth Jobs Initiative, designed to provide soft skills, occupational skills training, job placement, and post-placement supports to a minimum of 50 out-of-school youth ages 18 to 24.
