About Manitoba Foundations
The Canadian community foundation movement began in Manitoba with the establishment of
The Winnipeg Foundation in 1921. Today, with 48 community foundations, our province is home
to approximately one quarter of all such organizations in the country.
Manitoba community foundations are members of Community Foundations of Canada (CFC),
an umbrella organization that provides foundations with tools and resources to help them
flourish in their communities.
What is a community foundation?
A community foundation is a charitable organization that provides financial support to causes
and agencies within a geographic region. Thanks to gifts from donors, community foundations
help communities today, tomorrow and forever.

John Chapman
John Chapman† served on the CFPD Board as treasurer for 4 ½ years,
sharing his expertise and bringing the financial piece up to today’s
standards. John believed in the foundation concept and became a founding
member through his partnership in KPMG Peat Marwick Thorne back in
1995. John was devoted to his community and we appreciate his
contribution to our success as a community foundation.
Barry Greenslade
Barry Greenslade† was an active member of the business and volunteer
community throughout his life. He understood the importance of philanthropy on
the part of the business community and actively encouraged other businesses
to be engaged in volunteer activities as donors and as active participants. He
served just 3 years on the Foundations' Board before ill health intervened. In
addition to his general contributions to the Boards' work, his efforts to assist the
Foundation in enhancing its professional image in its logo, letterhead and
promotional material were particularly appreciated.

Message from the Chair and Executive Director
The Foundation's Mission Statement says it all:
to enhance and enrich the quality of life in
Portage la Prairie and District by supporting and
promoting philanthropy through endowment
building, donor services, grantmaking and
community leadership. Although that is simply
stated, it is rich in meaning and requires a multifaceted effort on the part of all concerned. Who
are those "all concerned"? The grant recipients
who help us identify the needs within our
community, the donors whose funds make it
possible and the volunteers whose efforts put it
all together - in other words, our Community.
For the past 19 years, volunteers have
dedicated time, skill and resources to support
the development and growth of our Community
Foundation. We thank our present Board
members for their dedication to promoting and
supporting the Foundation.
We send our sincere thanks to our retiring
Board members, Rae Thomson and Sandra
Falk. Rae served on the Board and as Chair of
the Award Committee for eight years. Rae was
always there to lend a helping hand when
needed. Sandra made a big impact during her
three year term. As Chair of the Youth in
Philanthropy Committee, she orchestrated the
creation and launching of the new ‘Kids in
Philanthropy’ program. Sandra also chaired the
Fund Development Committee and organized
our first gala, ‘The Founders and Friends
Dinner.’
In 2012 the Endowment Fund grew by $546,209
to
create
a
new
balance
of
$5,326,475
in
the
Fund.
We
appreciate
the

Fund
Since 1996, the Community Foundation has had
a positive impact on each and every sector in
Portage la Prairie and District through our
grantmaking program. In 2012, grants valued at
$125,978 were awarded to various non-profit
organizations. The undesignated endowment
funds support the grantmaking program where
registered charities submit an application for
funding for projects. This year, 66% of the
grants awarded had applied for funding. The
other 34% is supported by earnings from
designated funds which take care of awards and
bursaries presented annually.
The Foundation experienced a great loss with
the passing of John Chapman on July 12, 2012
at the age of 59. He was a valued director,
Treasurer and donor during his lifetime. A major
gift will be made to the Foundation in his
memory in 2013. He will be missed.
We welcome three new Board members: Dawn
Froese, Carey Duncan and Jeff Bereza. Your
skill and knowledge will be a great asset to the
Foundation.
Aspire: direct one's hopes or ambitions toward
achieving something. That is what the
Foundation - those who contribute to it and
those who benefit from it - are doing. They
aspire. Together we direct our hopes, ambitions
and efforts to building a Community we all will
be proud of.

ENDOWMENT FUND
As of December 31, the Oakville and District Community
Endowment Fund received $11,580 in donations
creating a Fund balance of $134,632.
The earnings generated by the Fund are used to support
an annual grant. This year the Oakville Community Club
received $4,079 to be used in the Oakville area.

Collegiate Institute in June 2012
The Club set up the Oakville and District Endowment Fund
Bursary in 2011. This bursary is awarded to a person, who has
been a resident of the Oakville, Poplar Point or Newton area for
a minimum of 3 years, prior to the application. The applicant
must be enrolled and accepted in a course of studies at a
recognized university, college or trade school, and pursuing a
degree, diploma or certificate.

the ‘Kathleen
Bjarnason Fund
for Music’ with the
Community
Foundation of
Portage and
District Inc. The
sister and brother
started the fund
with $13,000 and other memorial donations in
Kathleen’s memory brought the Fund balance to over
$14,400. Lorraine said, “My mother lived for music
and it means a lot to her family to help young people
appreciate and develop their own love for music. “
Doreen Buchanan
has a great interest
in supporting
students who wish to
pursue a career in
human nutrition. She
has created the
’Doreen Buchanan
Bursary Fund’ that
will provide a
bursary yearly to a
grade 12 graduate of
the Portage Collegiate Institute. The bursary will be
for a student pursuing a career in the field of human
nutrition or in the culinary arts. The Bursary Fund will
be started with $8,000 and will be built over time. The
first bursary for $250 will be awarded in 2013 at the
PCI Awards Ceremonies in June. “Good nutrition is
important,” said Doreen, “The nutrition Science
Program combines the study of nutrition and
application of dietetics. It provides you with an indepth understanding of a variety of aspects. Nutrition
education is a life learning process and you will find
why the right choices of food are so vital to our
healthy life styles.”
The ‘Kathleen Bjarnason Fund for Music’ will be part
of the CFPD’s permanent Endowment Fund, only the
earnings from the fund will be used to award grants to
schools or other qualified charitable organizations
who wish to enhance their music program. The grant
may be used for special instruments, music or
something unique that will add to their music
program. In 2013, eligible groups may submit an
application to receive funding. A copy of the grant

Doreen was born and raised in the Portage area,
attending school at South Ridge and Oakville, and
later graduated as a dietitian from Guelph College.
The Manitoba Development Centre hired her and she
soon became the Director of Dietetics. Doreen
managed the Dietetic Department which included
housekeeping and laundry under one umbrella. She
was well organized and is respected for the high
standard she set for the MDC. Doreen was devoted to
her work and retired in 1991 after 47 years of
dedicated service.
Kathleen Bjarnason passed away on March 7, 2012
in Victoria at the wonderful age of 105. She was a
creative woman and music played a significant role in
her life from the time she was 5 years old to her
senior years. For over 80 years Kathleen sang,
whistled and played the piano for family and friends
sing-a-longs. As a senior in Portage, she had fun
being a member of the Herman Prior Centre’s
harmonic band. “We have been blessed to be her
children and are grateful to have had such a wise and
caring person to guide us for most of our journey,”
stated Lorraine.
On the personal side, Doreen is a prime example of a
person who leads a healthy life-style, by following
good nutrition and fitness; she exercises daily and
walks the lake path from 5th Street East to Yellowquill
School. Doreen loves to travel and play golf. Her
favourite vacation spot was in Hawaii where for 28
years she did both.

Kenn also was an enthusiastic curler, golfer and
baseball player, and not only did he contribute on the
field of play, but also became involved in the inner
workings of the sports organizations, including being
president of the Portage Golf Club. Outside of sports,
he served for 10 years as a member of the CFPD
Awards Committee to help administer the Dr. Donald
Rae Bursary.

was a member
of the
community who
gave of himself
generously
throughout his
long time in
Portage, prior to
his passing in
2012. Joyce
Collier, his wife,
is no less
committed to
giving back and
her contributions
have been
equally
impressive.
Joyce’s first concern was the welfare of her husband
and children. All were members of the Portage Golf
Club where she started her career as a volunteer. She
became active in the junior golf program when her
children were learning the sport. Her goal was to
provide the best training possible for all young golfers.
The Club showed their appreciation by creating the
Joyce Collier Junior Golf Award, which she presents
annually to the junior golfer who shows the most
passion for the game.
This was the beginning of her long involvement in golf
administration. Joyce made a significant contribution to
the game on the local, provincial and national levels. In
1981, she was a member of the rules committee for the
Canadian Ladies Golf Association’s (CLGA) national
amateur championship. She was president of the
Manitoba Ladies Golf Association then went on to
become CLGA Director of Player Development and was
an associate governor in the Royal Canadian Golf
Association. Joyce was the driving force behind the
formation of the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and
Museum. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in
2012 for her tireless work with junior and women’s golf.
In addition, she received the 2012 Distinguished
Service Award from Golf Manitoba for her many
contributions to golf. On April 30, 2013, at the Sports
Manitoba Night of Champions, Joyce was honoured
with the Great-West Life Volunteer of the Year award in
recognition of her contribution to golf, “It is because of
the leadership of people like Joyce, that the golf
community continues to thrive in Manitoba. “(Exert from

Kenn and Joyce
shared the
strong belief that
they should support their community through
philanthropy. Donations from friends and family in
memory of Kenn formed the base for the ‘Dr. Kenneth
J. and Joyce Collier Fund’ which will provide for Sunset
Palliative Care, one of their favourite charities. Each
year, the earnings from the Fund will be given to
support client services and education.
Kenn and Joyce met at the Winnipeg Canoe Club after
Kenn graduated with his Pharmacy Degree in 1956.
They were married in 1960, and in 1964, after Kenn
graduated from Medical School, they chose Portage to
be their home and where they would raise their family.
Kenn joined Dr. Don Rae at Prairie Medical Associates,
a partnership that lasted for 25 years. He continued
working in the medical field in various positions and
served on numerous boards, including as president of
the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.
After retiring from medicine in 1990, he worked for
Manitoba Health and later RHA Central Manitoba. But
he never lost his passion for helping patients and
returned to practicing medicine in 2003, providing local
medical support to rural communities in southern
Manitoba until 2011. Kenn was a very caring man and
was always available to help his friends and patients.
Kenn and Joyce were married for 51 years and were
blessed with four children, Cathleen, Brenda, Douglas
and Andrew, and six grandchildren. With this Fund,
they have created a lasting legacy. The Fund is open to
contributions from anyone and will provide support for
individuals requiring palliative care and their families in
our community now and forever.

The Orille and Gwen Hogue Fund will be an
undesignated fund which places no restrictions on the
use of the funds, relying on the Board of Directors to
make grantmaking decisions that meet current
community priorities and needs. The final value of the
Fund will be decided sometime in the future.
ORILLE AND GWEN HOGUE LEGACY
Orille and Gwen Hogue were active and engaged
members in our community for many years and they
looked back fondly on those years spent together.
Orille stated that he and his late wife had always
wanted to give even more to their community when
they could. To that end, he had made estate
arrangements to benefit interests close to their hearts,
as well as local registered charities in a broader
sense. Orille decided to set up three named funds.
Then in December he gave the Foundation $200,000
to launch the two Bursary Funds. With Orille’s support
the first bursaries will be given in June 2013.
GWEN HOGUE BURSARY FUND
In his wife’s memory, Orille has created the Gwen
Hogue Bursary Fund for $100,000. Gwen was an
English teacher with the Portage School Division. The
Bursary Fund will support awards for grade twelve
Portage Collegiate students who plan to pursue a
career in education or working with children.
ORILLE HOGUE BURSARY FUND
Orille worked for the Department of Highways for
many years and he knows the value of good training
in any profession. To support PCI students who are
pursuing a career in the trades, he has established
the Orille Hogue Bursary Fund for $100,000. The
bursary will be available to students entering a
community college to learn a trade whether it be
hairdressing, health care, mechanics or another
trade.
Gwen, a farm girl from Oakville, was convinced by a
friend to try teaching. After Permit Teaching in Tilston
it was natural for her to go to Normal School.
Following training she taught at Elm River, a school
south of Oakville. Thus began a 39 year career in
teaching of which 22 were with the Portage School
Division and 18 of them were at Yellowquill School
teaching English to Junior High students. Gwen was
active in many areas of the local branch of the
Manitoba Teachers Society for a number of years,
particularly working with the social committee. She
served as secretary for one year and was involved
with Professional Development.
Orille grew up on the family farm east of Poplar Point.
He attended Belcourt School. His first job with the
Highways Department was on a local maintenance
crew. He joined the Army in 1943 and served in World
War II as a radio operator. He was wounded twice and
ended the war in a Belgium Hospital. Later that year he
became a member of the Canadian All-Star Hockey
team and toured Europe and Britain. When he came
back home he worked again with highway crews, thus
continuing his 46 year career with Highways; the last
19 years he served as the first maintenance
superintendent overseeing the west half of District 6.
Orille was an avid sportsman, who earned many
trophies in hockey and curling. He golfed, played
horseshoes, and hunted. He was a member of the
Lions Club, the Legion, the ANAF, Liniment League
and involved with the Terriers. Orille was the recipient
of two Golden Jubilee awards, the first one 25 years
ago for his commitment to the armed services and his
work for Manitoba Highways and the second one this
year for his volunteer work in the community.
Orille and Gwen were married in 1954 and spent 57
wonderful years together. They enjoyed travelling the
world but there was no place like home. Their
commitment to the community and its people will
continue through the Funds they created at the
Foundation, benefitting our community and its citizens,
now and for many years to come.

CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES OF CENTRAL
MANITOBA FOUNDATION FUND
The Child and Family Services Foundation
established the First Agency Endowment Fund within
the Community Foundation of Portage and District.
The initial donation to the CFPD was $179,000 and
as investments come due over the next four years,
the Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba
Foundation Inc. will be investing $400,000. The
income from the Fund will go to CFSCM Foundation
for programs.

The Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba
Foundation was established on April 30th, 1993 using
private funds from the old Children’s Aid Society of
Central Manitoba. The Mission of the Foundation is to
“work in partnership with the community to provide
opportunities that will enhance the emotional,
physical, social and intellectual well-being of
children.” The Foundation has grown and flourished
over the past 19 years, with an endowment fund of
over $400,000.
Kathy Wightman, Executive Director of Child and
Family Services of Central Manitoba Agency, and
Secretary Treasurer of the Foundation states, “The
time is right for us to now form a partnership with the
Community Foundation of Portage and District. The
Foundation Board has made a commitment to invest
up to $400,000 over the next four years establishing
the Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba
Foundation Agency Fund within the Portage
Foundation. We want to support the Community
Foundation of Portage and District, as well as position
ourselves to continue to grow our own endowment
fund. We look forward to working with the Community
Foundation in this new partnership.”
PORTAGE & DISTRICT ARTS COUNCIL
BURSARY FUND
The Portage & District Arts Council (PDAC) pooled
the resources from three bursary funds to establish
the Portage & District Arts Council Bursary Fund.
Each year the CFPD will forward the earnings to
PDAC to support one or more bursaries. In March
2012, PDAC presented a cheque for $30,000 and in
September another $4,500 was added to the Fund.
In the 1980’s, the Arts Council established three
bursaries for individuals who wished to further their
study of art. The bursaries pay tribute to the memory
of three Portage la Prairie area artists: Jack Hassard,
Joyce Smedegaard and Karen Handford. Each made
valuable contributions to art education in the
community. Jack Hassard was instrumental in
founding the Portage & District Arts Council, and all
three artists devoted themselves to establishing an
Arts Centre in Portage.
In September 2012, the Peter Ward Bursary was
added to the list. Peter lived most of his adult life
surrounded by the Delta Marsh, and was instrumental
in the development of Delta Waterfowl and Wetlands
Research Station. His contributions to the world of
wildlife, waterfowl and art will not be forgotten.

BARRY AND ETHEL-MAE GREENSLADE
FAMILY FUND
Mae was Executive Director of the Portage Plains United
Way for several years, and owned a business supply and
gift store in Portage la Prairie.
Barry and Ethel-Mae have always been grateful for the
way their home town of Portage la Prairie supported and
nurtured them and their family over the years. Now they
are giving back. They were happily married for 48 years
and have five married children: Robin, Chris, Fred, Kelly
and Lori-Dee, as well as 13 grandchildren. Their legacy
will continue to grow.
PORTAGE CREDIT UNION OAKVILLE FUND
Barry and Ethel-Mae Greenslade have been strong
community supporters and great friends and mentors
to many individuals, personally and in business.
Family has always been their priority. Barry passed
away in 2012 but his presence will continue to be felt
by all who knew him. Barry and Ethel-Mae shared a
great love for one another and in keeping with that
strong bond, the “Barry and Ethel-Mae Greenslade
Family Fund” has been created. The Fund will be
undesignated and the interest used to support the
Foundation’s general granting program that gives
financial assistance to many of the organizations they
have supported over the years.
Barry was a Portage farm boy who became a
prominent business man, owning and operating
Stewart Greenslade Insurance. His practice of putting
people first made him successful at business and in
the community as a member of several organizations
such as the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Kinsmen
Club, Rotary Club, and most recently the Community
Foundation. Barry enjoyed sports especially curling
and golf, and shared his talents in music, design and
woodworking.
Ethel-Mae (Carter) was born and raised in Portage la
Prairie. After graduating from P.C.I. she took her
nurses training at St. Boniface General Hospital. She
is a former figure skating coach and fitness instructor.
Ethel-Mae serves her community in many ways – she
is active in her church, and is currently on the Board
of Sunset Palliative Care serving as Treasurer. Ethel-

‘The Portage Credit Union Oakville Fund’ was
established in December 2012 with the donation of
$5,000. CEO Dave Omichinski said, “We contributed a
previous $10,000 so this brings us to $15,000. By the end
of the 3 years the pool of funds will be up to $25,000.” It
will be a Fund within the Oakville and District Community
Endowment Fund.
The Portage Credit Union has been a supporter of the
Foundation since its inception by becoming a Founding
Member in 1995 and donating continuously over the
years. Dave commented, “The premise behind the Fund
itself is that it’s a gift that keeps on giving. The funds are
never spent; the interest generated goes out to all
causes. With Oakville specifically, we have a branch out
there and we have a lot of members from the area. This
is an excellent way to help build the Oakville Fund that is
targeted at Oakville and area.”

ADMINISTRATIVE ENDOWMENT FUND
DR. MIKE AND JOANNE SULLIVAN
FAMILY FUND
In March 1995, the CFPD made an application to the
Community Foundations of Canada for operating cost
support. The application was successful and resulted in a
$5,000 grant. The money was used to improve
community awareness and to build the Foundation’s
operational structure. Building an Administrative
Endowment Fund for the CFPD was one of the
conditions of the grant.
An Administrative Endowment Fund supports the
administration of the Foundation’s various programs in
community leadership, development, grantmaking and
communications. Presently, the Foundation receives
1.5% of the total Endowment Fund to help with
administration cost. It is also the grateful recipient of a
Manitoba Community Foundations Support Grant,
sponsored by the Winnipeg Foundation and Manitoba
Hydro. In this past year, the Foundation year received
flow-through funds of $9,317 for expenses from this
grant.
In November 2012, Mike and Joanne Sullivan created
the “Dr. Mike and Joanne Sullivan Family Fund”. Income
earned on this field of interest fund will benefit charitable
groups, projects and/or activities in recreation, sport, and
fitness in Portage la Prairie and area. The Fund is one of
the Sullivan's ongoing investments in their community.
Mike and Joanne Sullivan believe in living an active
lifestyle, which includes a variety of sport and
recreational activities. “We feel supporting the
recreational areas of our community will benefit those
both young and old and give them many opportunities for
healthier lifestyles,” said Mike. “The fund is structured for
two different purposes. The first is for recreational
purposes to create better lifestyles. The second is geared
specifically towards youth groups or projects.”
The Sullivan’s are Founding Members and Mike served
on the Board for four years from 1998 to 2002. “Having
been involved with the foundation since its inception”
said Mike, “we feel this is the best opportunity to give
back to the community. Our youth are our future. Any
time we can encourage our youth to develop and grow
we will all benefit from a better society.”

The goal of the Foundation has been, and continues to
be, to build the Administrative Endowment Fund and
thereby reduce the amount charged to the other
Endowment Funds to cover the Foundation's cost of
operations. Ideally, at some point the Administrative
Endowment Fund might support all of the Foundation’s
expenses, allowing 100% of the other Funds to be used
for their intended purposes.
To date, the Administrative Endowment Fund stands at
$283,791. Donors who share the vision of a Fund that
pays the bills, leaving the other Funds to carry on their
good work without any “overhead”, can contribute to the
Fund and receive an official tax receipt for their donation.
Several named funds have specifically identified the
purpose of building the CFPD Administrative Endowment
Fund when they were created. Two such funds are:

New Grant Application and Guidelines
Time for a change!
After 18 years the Community Foundation of
Portage and District (CFPD) has revised the grant
application to meet current day technology. The
application is on our website at www.cfpdi.ca.
The new application is a fillable PDF form, which
means you can open the form, fill it out and save it
to your computer. You can then submit the
application via e-mail with supporting documents
(scanned documents are acceptable) to CFPD
([email protected]). Please submit hard copies as
well. Applicants can send the application and
supporting documents to [email protected] or mail to
P.O. Box 1153, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3J9.
made to the CFPD board where more discussion
takes place and final decisions are made. Shortly
after, the applicants are contacted and the grants
are awarded accordingly. Special recognition and
appreciation has to go out to CFPD’s Executive
Director Karen Braden for making this process
go as smoothly as it does. She performs a
considerable amount of work assessing and
organizing all the applications, contacting each
organization to set up the interviews, contacting
them all again with the results, and then
coordinating awards and presentations.
The total amount of funds disbursed in 2012 was
with $125,978 in undesignated funds going to 18
community groups, and $42,707 in designated
funds including Awards and Bursaries. These
funds were disbursed as follows:
CFPD has created a lasting legacy by pooling and
prudently investing the gifts of many donors in a
permanent Endowment Fund. The Fund has
grown to $5.4 million. The income generated is
used to support community-building initiatives in
such diverse fields as health care, education, arts
and culture, recreation, environment and social
services.
Sector
Grantmaking is the fulfillment of the more public
and tangible part of CFPD’s mission. It is the
giving back part of what we do. And last year,
through the interest generated from the
Community Endowment Fund, we were able to
give back $125,978 to a wide variety of
organizations supporting a broad spectrum of vital
community projects.
Grantmaking takes place twice a year in April and
October. The process has become very
streamlined over the years and, all things
considered, has an amazingly quick turnaround.
In the span of 3 weeks each application is
qualified and discussed, representatives from the
respective organizations are interviewed by the
Grants Committee, and recommendations are

This Fund provides resources for charities which
have projects that benefit people of Portage and
District. Grants are only made to non-profit
organizations with Revenue Canada Charitable
Registration Numbers or other qualified donees
under the Income Tax Act. We do not support
general operating expenses or religious or political
activities.

It should also be noted that the total amount
requested by all the applications in a given year
far exceeds the CFPD’s fund distribution quota for
that year. So it’s often a challenge for the board,
especially when there are so many worthwhile
projects in our community that deserve our

Youth in Philanthropy
Kids in Philanthropy – Cathy Vanstone
In the spring of 2012, the outcomes of the pilot Grade 5-8
KiP in Philanthropy project were evident as the four
participating middle schools presented cheques to their
selected charities. The goal of introducing a vehicle for
middle school educators to partner curriculum with
community philanthropy was met with all project groups.
Five projects were completed in the four schools La
Verendrye, École Arthur Meighan School, Yellowquill
School, and Oakville School.
Yellowquill School’s KiP students presented a cheque
to Daisy Dowhy, Central Plains Cancer Care
CFPD committed to supporting the KiP program with an
annual funding of $2500. The program challenged the
students to get to know their community well enough to
make an informed decision on how to grant their $500.
Some projects initiated their own fundraising to increase
the amount of their grant. One project leader plans
integrating his project with the industrial arts program in
his school and developed a logo for Youth in
Philanthropy and KiP T- shirts as a fund raiser.

Evaluation comments for the pilot program from students,
schools, project leaders, and grant recipients were very
positive, In addition to the original program objectives of
education and learning skills around philanthropy and
community service, additional outcomes were noted.
These included a positive attitude and experience of
philanthropy for all involved as well as public relations
and speaking skills in interviewing potential recipients
and making presentation at school assemblies. Some
students also had the opportunity of being interviewed by
local media.

As recommendations from the pilot project the previous
year were incorporated into the KiP resource material,
the committee is promoting school participation through
having material as easy to access as possible. This year,
all the applications and information are available on line
on the CFPD website. The committee has been
encouraged by the ongoing enthusiasm and commitment
of the students, project leaders, and schools to the
objectives of Kids in Philanthropy. CFPD was pleased to
present an overview of the project at the regional
Community Foundations of Canada forum in September,
2012.

Field of Interest Funds
Allow you to designate a specific area of interest
(e.g. education, children’s needs, recreation) in
which charitable grants can be made. The Board
of Directors uses its discretion in selecting the
most appropriate recipients, year after year.
Would you like to leave a lasting legacy
behind?
There are many reasons for charitable giving; the
Community Foundation of Portage and District can
meet those needs. The Community Foundation is a
charity where you and your family cannot only see
but feel the benefits that it makes to “our”
community today and for generations to come.
Designated Funds
Specify one or more charitable organizations to be
the perpetual beneficiaries of the annual income
from your fund.
The Community Foundation has grown
tremendously since its inception in 1994 and within
this past year alone the Foundation has approved
approximately $128,000 in grants.
Door Advised Funds
Allow
you to make recommendations to the Foundation’s
Board of Directors regarding proposed charitable
distributions from your fund. Your suggestions are
considered, although final determination on all
grant awards is the responsibility of the Board.
These grants are helping good people do great
things in our community such as improving the
health, arts and culture, education, recreation and
community services for all who live here. We
believe that by strengthening community
organizations, we strengthen our community as a
whole.
Scholarship and Bursary Funds
Allow you to provide assistance and
encouragement to promising young students
challenged by the cost of education. Funds are
distributed to the institution on behalf of the
student.
Creating a family fund ensures your name and
generosity will live on in our community forever.
Once you have established your fund you can add
to it at any time. All contributions are tax deductible
and you have the freedom to direct the distribution
of funds to specific charities or sectors you feel
compassionate about.
Agency Endowment Funds
Charitable organizations may establish
permanently endowed funds to provide a source
of annual income for operations or programs.
Administration Funds
These funds support the administration of the
foundation’s various programs in community
leadership, development, grantmaking and
communications.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
All named funds require a minimum of $5,000 with
the exception of a Donor Advised Fund which
requires a minimum of $25,000. All named funds
can be built over time.
Types of Funds
When you establish a fund with CFPD, you choose
its name and decide how it will work to benefit the
community and fulfill your charitable goals.
Depending on your wishes, your fund will fall into
one of the following categories:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is

Memorial List
Memorial gifts are a thoughtful way of honouring
the memory of a family member, friend or
colleague who died. Memorial gifts made to the
Community Foundation of Portage and District
Inc qualify as charitable donations. Donors
receive a tax receipt and the family of the
deceased receives a letter acknowledging the
gift. This memorial gift to the Community
Foundation remembers that special person each
year in the Annual Report and on the website.
