WELCOME TO THE TRON’S SPRING SEASON
I am delighted to announce a really strong Spring programme of theatre which
combines a Tron Theatre Company production from the 1960s with a raft of brilliant
new plays from Scotland’s leading theatre companies.
The visiting season opens with the world premiere of Just Checking starring
Glasgow’s very own Blythe Duff, a riotously funny new comedy about a very
organised life descending into disorder. This is followed by another premiere,
Smalltown set down the road in Ayrshire, written by the leading local writers DC
Jackson, Johnny McKnight and Douglas Maxwell and presented by Random
Accomplice who gave us the fabulous Promises Promises last year.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT AND DINE WITH US...
Banish the winter blues with an evening
at the Tron, as we bring back our special
pre-theatre menu discount which will
run until the end of March.
If you are coming to see a show, why not
also dine with us and we’ll take 10% off
your food bill. Reserve your table in advance
and let the catering team know you’ll be
attending a show; or simply present your
theatre tickets when you take your seat in
the restaurant to qualify for the discount.*
With freshly prepared, seasonal food
sourced locally, the Tron Kitchen offers
great dishes and fantastic service across
three different, but equally vibrant, dining
spaces. What are you waiting for?
Call 0141 552 8587 to book a table
or ask Box Office to transfer you when you’re buying tickets
*TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Offer only applies between 10th January and
31st March 2011 on the Tron’s evening menu. Subject to availability.

The season also includes a visit by Stellar Quines and the Royal Lyceum Theatre,
Edinburgh with a brilliant new Canadian play, Age of Arousal. Other main house
highlights include Birds of Paradise with a new adaptation of Brecht’s classic
Mother Courage by iconic Glasgow writer Tom Leonard and a mini festival of
music and cabaret from Limelight Studios.
Tron Theatre Company’s contribution to the season is a stripped down version of a
1960s classic, Staircase by Charles Dyer. With wicked ‘Pinteresque’ humour, this
fascinating and taut piece of period drama gets its Scottish premiere forty-five years
after it played London’s West End.
For family audiences, award-winning children’s author Julia Donaldson presents her
own show, Zog & the Gruffalo, and we also have The Giant Children’s Cabaret
livening up Valentine’s weekend.
In the Changing House, Raindog make a return to theatre with The Ushers, a brand
new comedy; Rekindle Theatre Company bring a large cast on stage to present
Peter Arnott’s The Breathing House; and Glasgow Actors Theatre Company present
Like This by Julie Tsang, a play influenced by Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago.
We will also have new young company Tiny Door staging A Scheme, the return of
Glasgow collective Flatrate with The Belief Project, plus Wild Life by Pamela Carter
inspired by the true story of Victor the Wolf-Boy of Aveyron found living in 19th
century rural France. Add to that the wonderful Greg Burke play Gagarin Way
presented by Rapture Theatre, and What Happened Is This, a new play by Nick
Underwood after his success here with One Night Stand ...and you have more than
enough to entertain you...
...and if this isn’t enough, there’s Celtic Connections, the Glasgow Comedy Festival,
John Shuttleworth, and a packed cabaret season in the Vic Bar. In fact, you can spend
the next three months in the Tron without leaving the place. Given our cold
winters, that would be a wise move!
See you down here.

Things are about to get a whole lot crazy!
Created by three of Scotland’s most dynamic writers,
Smalltown tells the unexpected tale of what happens
when a polluted water supply turns its residents crazy:
from zombies in the frozen food aisle, to oversexed
teenagers releasing the animal within, to a dangerous game
of Russian roulette on Girvan beach.
Smalltown is the story of nature wreaking her revenge
and unleashing all sorts of comedic carnage.
Find yourself trapped in three separate stories of
Smalltown life before you decide how the story ends!
A thrilling and downright hilarious rollercoaster of a show
from the company that brought you Promises Promises and
the Little Johnny trilogy.

Not everyone was swingin’ in sixties London...
Charles and Harry have been a couple for twenty-odd years,
running an East End barber shop where they both dream of
better days. Over the course of an evening their camp, bitchy
and very funny banter becomes increasingly bitter and previously
unknown truths emerge with news of the impending arrival of
Charles’ daughter from an early foray into wedded normality, a
court summons for ‘improper conduct’ and the subsequent
prospect of life apart should a jail sentence be handed down.
Archly funny yet also poignantly sad, Staircase, last staged in
London forty-five years ago, is the blackest of comedies shot
through with the wretchedness of lives blighted by social stigma.

Determined to make women rich, ex-militant suffragette Mary Barfoot and
her devoted protégé and lover Rhoda enlist female students to master the
new invention that will gain them freedom – the typewriter. Three spinster
sisters are invited into the school to rescue them from poverty, setting in

Springtime,1996. Jed’s fled the bright lights of
Paisley for a contract in Sheffield building roofs.
He’s got his own flat, his girlfriend’s six foot
one, he’s twenty years old and life is looking
up. But the night before his sister’s wedding,
Jed’s oldest pal Skarloey pays an unexpected
visit. Then two more visitors drop by. There
are high hopes for the future and yearnings
for the past. Something is coming to an end.
But will friendship conquer all?
Ruth doesn’t know if the things her man asks
her to do are right or wrong. She doesn’t
feel strongly either way. So should she go
along with them? Where should she draw
the line? And is she all she seems?
Julie Tsang’s bold, stylish and uncompromising
first play (influenced by Kundera’s Unbearable
Lightness Of Being and Mamet’s Sexual
Perversity In Chicago) is set in a world of
uncertain morality.
The Ushers is a brand new comedy by
Coronation Street writer Simon Crowther,
directed by Stuart Davids (Wasted).
It asks uncompromising questions about what
a woman should do to keep her man. And
whether by going along with him she runs
the risk of unlocking her own dark desires.

You’re standing by yourself, nothing between
you, the sky and the future. At this moment,
in this place, after all that you’ve done, and

If you only see one doctor this year, make it Dr
Phil... Phil Hammond is a GP, writer, broadcaster
and possibly the only comedian to have appeared
at a public inquiry. He is rude about everything
(politicians, doctors, death, drugs, sex).
WARNING: THIS SHOW IS SERIOUSLY GOOD
FOR YOUR HEALTH!
‘One of the most entertainingly subversive people on
the planet.’ THE GUARDIAN
FRI 8 APRIL 10PM £10/£8
Late night jokes and jibes in the heart of the city
as two of Scotland’s most experienced comedians
deliver a show that is part stand up, part chat
show and promises to be both entertainingly
informative and informatively entertaining.
LUKE WRIGHT’S
CYNICAL BALLADS:
SEVEN CAUSTIC TALES
FROM BROKEN BRITAIN
SUN 27 MARCH 8PM £10/£8
Luke Wright has been hailed as performance
poetry’s key revivalist and in his new show, shines
a light on obese teenagers, jaded chip shop
proprietors and posh twits with the luck of the
devil, as he leads us through the run down
shopping precincts and airless television studios of
modern Britain. Expect screaming tabloids, suicide
and lashings of Bollinger in a show that will shock
and delight.
THE GINGE, THE GEORDIE
AND THE GEEK
The boys return home to bring you all the silliness,
surrealism and great characters of 2009-2011 in
one huge night of comedy madness. If you like
your comedy served extremely funny, order a
portion of Ginge, Geordie and the Geek.
‘All hail the new chiefs!’ ★★★★★ JOHNNY VEGAS
‘Comic, acute, rhythmic eulogies to modern life.’
THE INDEPENDENT

WIL HODGSON
Award-winning cult favourite story-telling
comedian Wil Hodgson returns to Glasgow to

material around.’ THE GUARDIAN

PHIL DIFFER THAT WHICH
DOES NOT KILL US MAKES
US SCUNNERED
Just when you thought it was possible to overcome
all of life’s hardships by having a cheery disposition,
embracing the power of positive thinking and
taking up Zumba, Phil Differ, Scotland’s most
hirsute comedian returns older, wiser and armed
with a new philosophy of despair in a high
voltage, cynicism packed hour of stand up
comedy, rock guitar and health tips.

DESTINATIONS + REFLECTIONS
An exhibition of work produced over the
past ten years, and earlier items from the
70s and 80s that illustrate the development
and cyclical nature of ideas that occupy John
Mackechnie’s artistic practice.
‘One of the first things that one notices about
John Mackechnie’s artistic output over the years
is its consistency and its quality. It is very rare
for an artist to find his vision, subject matter
and mode of expression/communication so early
on in his career.’ ADRIAN WISZIEWSKI
CALUM MACKENZIE
MARSHALL PLAN / SCHWITTERS
Marshall Plan is taken from a series of
works which document an e-Bay purchase
and delivery of art books from the United
States. A staged re-opening of the parcels
was arranged on Calum’s own studio floor
as a traditional still life. He then shot and
edited a hundred digital camera ‘sketches’
at stages of opening the parcels, which
were used as directive notes by a
professional photographer to shoot final
images as raw digital files.
An internationally acclaimed centre of excellence in fine art printmaking, Glasgow Print Studio is located
