Generosity, Providence and Grace
(Each year in our June newsletter we run this brief history of the Wayside Chapel.)
The journey of the Center has been one filled with Generosity, Providence and Grace. The story of the Wayside Chapel offers, in a nutshell, a clear example of the Generosity of people, the Providence of God, and
the Grace that upholds us all. I’d like to share with you a brief history of the Wayside Chapel to show you exactly what I mean. So here goes…
From 1946-1951 the front office of the Lodge was actually the Chapel! It seated 18 people on 2’ x 6’ benches (and you thought our pews were uncomfortable?!) and a plywood altar. In that tiny space there
was no room at all for a piano, much less an organ!
Then, just before WWII, Adam Inhout felt strongly that The Center needed a real Chapel and he donated
$5,000 to the cause. Mr. Inhout was very generous not only with his money but with his talents: he built the
stone pillar at our entrance, the first girls’ dormitory in camp and the furniture that still is in the parlor of the Lodge. Mr. Inhout died towards the end of the war, and after the war we began to get serious about building a real Chapel. But we didn’t have a design… yet.
Then, lo and behold, a friend of the Center, Mr. Jim Pomeroy, became interested in the project. He lived in
Orland Park and was a well known architect in the Palos-Orland area. Although his area of interest was
houses, not chapels, he gladly took on the project and began doing research to find just the right kind of
design for the Center’s Chapel. Those involved with the decision making agreed with Mr. Pomeroy that an A-frame design (evoking the pyramids of ancient Egypt) seemed to ground the Chapel to Earth (since nature was so important to us). The Chapel was to made of wood, since we had only the donation from Mr.
Inhout and not much more money.
Along comes the Providence of God once again! Carl Zimmerman had recently moved to Palos and he was
the largest cut-stone dealer in the Chicago area. One day, after having lunch with Elizabeth and Sandy, he
said he thought the Chapel really needed to be made of stone! So with his generosity, Rocky Mountain Cobra stones, Lannon stone, and colored stones from Tennessee were used to create the simply beautiful
Chapel we know and love today.
None of the details in the design of the Chapel were left to chance. All of the scriptures and symbols are
intentional and hold the mission of the Center and the dream of God. The symbols of the Trinity are on the
front of the Chapel. The hands of God the Father are over the Chapel Bells, the Lamb represents Jesus (on
the left of the door as you are looking at the Chapel), and the dove represents the Holy Spirit (on the right
side). These images were carved by a German stone mason and were offered as a gift!
There are two crosses on the front of the Chapel, on either side of the door: on the right side is the creed of
the Center and on the left is Scripture telling about the land. These inscriptions were the generous gift of a
monument man from Chicago Heights...

The stained glass window in back of the altar is a copy of an old English chapel window. The rude beams
over the altar were designed from old English churches that had a rude beam with a screen hanging down
to keep the cattle and other animals that came in the open building off the altar. On the beam closest to
the altar, facing the pews it is inscribed: “Love never faileth.” On the beam closest to the organ loft, which you can read as you leave the Chapel is: “Peace be with you.”
All of the beautiful cherry woodwork: the pews, the altar, the pulpit and the lectern were the generous gift
of the Kruissink Brothers as a memorial to their family. It was all designed by Bud and John Kruissink and
offered as a gift to the Center!
Providence, generosity and grace. Without grace, none of this would have happened. While the Center
only had $5000 in cash, even back then if there were not so many generous people who ‘happened’ to show up at the Center (Providence), the Chapel would have cost $40,000 back in 1951.
Sometimes…dreams seem so outlandish .
Sometimes…dreams seem so unreachable.
Sometimes, oftentimes, when we are open and aware,
Providence and Grace sweep in
and Generous individuals show up and offer their gifts.
It seems to be The Center has grown…and we haven’t stopped growing, yet!
Thank you to all who have shown generosity in the past.
Thank you to all who are showing generosity this day!
And thank you to all who will be generous in the days ahead!
We could not be here healing and loving,
teaching and celebrating,
comforting and creating without you…
Thank you from The Center of our hearts….
peace!
You probably know someone that was
married at the Wayside Chapel. Maybe it
was even you. If you know anyone looking
to have a quaint, charming wedding,
please have them give us a call. The Wayside Chapel has weddings all year long and
from May 15 to October 15 you can choose
to have your ceremony in the beautiful
garden. Don’t worry about a thing. The minister, musicians and the chapel hostess
will ensure that your special day runs
smoothly. If your ceremony is planned for
the garden and it should rain, we will very easily move it into the air-conditioned chapel. The pictures will
be breathtaking, and the ceremony an unforgettable start to your new life together. Call 708-361-3650 to
inquire about weddings at the Wayside Chapel.

farm & nature discovery preschool & kindergarten
Greetings from Farm and Nature Discovery School. I can’t call it a preschool anymore, since fall will welcome the addition of a half day kindergarten program. This program will be consistent with our natureinspired curriculum and build upon what the children have learned during their preschool years here.
Last month, we graduated 63 students from our Pre-kindergarten program. It was a great last month for
us, and included a creek walk, hay rack ride, and many outdoor learning adventures. We grew all sorts of
Mother’s Day gifts, including cilantro to make our own salsa. We will miss all of our students and are looking forward to having all our new little ones in the fall.
Our summer program is scheduled for June 2 – 13th. We still have openings for T/TH from 9 – noon.
There are also a few preschool spots left for next fall. Please call for information and/or a tour. 708-361-8933.
Below are all of our 2014 Preschool graduates. We wish them the best.

Barn To Be Wild 6 Recap........
Miss Kay completed her stint in the pigpen
for Barn To Be Wild 6 and things couldn’t have gone better. We were treated to,
among other things, live music (Thanks, Mia
& Marisa!), live singing (Thanks, Center
Singers!) and a live reading of the great Dr.
Seuss book You’re Only Old Once (Thanks,
Dale Fausch!).
Art instructor Heather Young led a fun session making little clay animals. The Pathway
guys shared some of their stories. A cute little mouse ran right across the food table.
One of our beloved barn cats ran right after
it. Junior Farmers visited. Lots of Miss Kay’s family stopped by. We meditated. We talked
about SAGE and Preschool and the Art Program.
Roseann Cozzie and Dan Snyder provided a
ton of able assistance. We also raised more
than $23,000 to support The Center’s mis-
sion.
Oh, and it’s never too late to donate! See the donation links and more at:

ART FOR KIDS...
for kindergarten through 8th grade
Our enthusiastic art teachers invite kids to
become part of a creative community, to develop their artistic talents and to learn new ways to express their
creativity. Kids have tremendous creative energy and our experienced teachers know how to channel it to express the beauty of life and nature around them. The children will explore the Children's Farm and its surrounding woodlands, which will provide not only the subject matter for the young artists, but also provide fun and action, inspiration, and raw materials. The classes are kept small in order to encourage individual self-expression.
The children will draw and paint, plus experience a variety of other artistic media such as pottery, tie-dyeing,
paper-making, and printmaking. Each session ends with an outdoor art show of the students' work.

fellowship corner: roseann cozzie
I first came to The Center in 2005, after I faced some personal challenges in my life. I started coming often and volunteering at the Farm
around 2011. Kids and animals were my happiness during this difficult
time in my life. I had thought a lot of people lived on the premises and
began to ask questions about The Center. As I began to find out more
and more about The Center, I began visiting more and more. I find
happiness and peace here and it makes me feel so good that people
appreciate what I’m contributing. I didn’t know anybody here at first, but
people always made me feel so welcome.
Roseann, we certainly do appreciate all that you do for us and we are
so thrilled that you found us!
