Originating from the Netherlands in the
70’s, the company is now based in the

2015 is a special year for the Furniture Design Award (FDA) – an established
international furniture design competition organised by the Singapore Furniture
Industries Council (SFIC). The Award has taken a gap year to restructure
for a brand new launch for its 2016 edition next March. “Future Code” – a
retrospective showcase for the FDA curated by Thai designer Anon Pairot –
celebrates the successes of the Award through profiling journeys of several
previous finalists and jurors. Using water as a key element in the design
concept, “Future Code” will be an inspirational showcase for many to behold.

The inspiration for this lighting installation came from a passage
in the Bible. A Cloud, that changed into a pillar of fire at night,
guided and protected the people of Israel as they wandered in the
wilderness. Through this lighting installation, which resembles a cloud,
Kenny wants to portray a similar concept of divine guidance for the
design community in Asia.
The flexibility and thinness of the Printed Lighting material enables it
to curl and be cut, making it possible to create a visual interaction of
curvilinear planes. This gives the effect of the swirling movements of a
supernatural cloud. Thin, light, flexible and generating negligible heat,
Printed Lighting presents an innovative and appealing material for
furniture design without the use of complex optics. In this technology
created by A*STAR, electrically functional inks are deposited on
materials such as plastic or metal foil, giving rise to sleek dimensions
and an aesthetically pleasing, uniform diffused light.
Andre Tan, Xopo Design,
Singapore
Andre is the founder of Xopo Design based in Singapore. He
believes that design is a universal transferable problem solving
solution which can be easily integrated with many different
industry. With the simple philosophy of “Design is the solution”
he aims to spread the importance of design to the world.
At IFFS 2015, his installation - Breeze, a kinetic sculpture
designed and created to benefit city dwellers where life typically
revolves within the concrete forest. In a fast-paced hectic
environment, Breeze, through its continuous and hypnotizing
movement could provide serenity to its audience. A reminder to
slowdown and relax.

AlvinT, a modern contemporary furniture
brand is the brainchild of Indonesian-born
designer Alvin Tjitrowirjo. Building from
the rich and diverse cultural heritage,
AlvinT establishes a new language by
reinterpreting local tradition infused with a
contemporary approach.
The Loop Stool was inspired by the desire
to hyperbolically magnify the beauty of a
commonly used open weaving pattern by
dramatically enlarge the scale and shape
the pattern module into a stool.

Taiwan
Designer Tomo Kimura gets his inspiration
from his six years in Torino and as well as
home in Japan, resunating the cosy
lifestyle imagined.
This product inspires to change
perspective which he believes, and things
get better.
Park Soo Jung,
November Design,
South Korea
November Design was established by
Park Soo Jung to challenge the ordinary
and inspire creativity. The inspiration for
the collection of lamps originated from her
travelling experiences, where locals often
misunderstood her as an alien intruding
their environment. She translates this
into her lamp designs to portray how
aliens are capable in creating a conducive
atmosphere and improving the ambience,
much like herself in foreign lands.
Taiwanese designer Cheng-Tsung Feng
studies Taiwanese craftsmanship and
is able to transform his experience
into modern design. With his skills,
he works with France lacquer brand,
Bertrand Pellissier, to bring a crossborder collection, “Bamboo x Lacquer”,
combining East and West, traditional and
modern.
Vito Selma, The Philippines
Filipino designer, Vito Selma has his particular
story behind each of his design - Moving and
swaying from a quiet lull to an unrestrained
crescendo - the Allegra moves from you from
outdoors to indoors, from reality to imagination.
On just a mere swing, hours can be spent in
quiet contemplation, or wild minutes acting out
the most outrageous fantasies - be it a burning
pirate’s ship, a rocking missile or a castle in flight.
With such possibilities, there is nothing that can
encapsulate childhood more than a swing.

C
uriosity and innovation has been the driving force behind
George’s career. Discover more about the curator of this
year’s thematic showcase at IFFS 2015.
From his beginnings in industrial design to founding his own
studio, local-bred George Soo has always taken a different
perspective when it comes to design.
This is true even for the name of his design studio, FLIQ which
offers a unique blend of furniture design and consultancy.
Since young, George would pick up products and flip them to
the under-side, just to see how they were made and how they
worked. This concept of flipping things around inspired him to
flip the letter p from the said word into a q – giving birth to the
company name, FLIQ.
And it’s this unique perspective that has led to his continued
success, being awarded with this year’s Singapore Good Design
Mark 2014 for his furniture line GROVER&JONES. After numerous
scale models and prototypes, his team managed to get the right
balance of materials, density and production techniques just right,
leading to a design that was truly rewarding.
The piece is composed of multi-faceted sides that invite users to
lean on them, creating a very intimate and relaxing experience.
Initially targeted for the office space, customers have expressed
interest in using them for the home, validating FLIQ’s mission in
creating seating that is suitable for work, home and play.
This unique perspective also flows into the studio’s consultancy
projects, one of Singapore’s trendiest bars, The Secret Mermaid.
Tasked with designing all aspects of the bar - the experience,
brand, interior design, furniture and even to the menu, the team has
managed to create a space that operates as a SHINKANSEN by
day - a place that serves quick Japanese lunches, and transforms
to an American whiskey bar at night.

The French Furniture Export Group – GEM – is a specialist
organisation, formed at the initiative of the National Union of French
Furniture Industries (UNIFA) and partnered with the Committee
for the Development of the French Furniture Industry (CODIFAB).
