Welcome TO
Minnesota
Dear Farmfest Attendees,
Welcome back to the 33rd annual IDEAg Minnesota Farmfest. This year, like
so many years before, Farmfest is connecting you, the best farmers in the region,
with industry-leading manufacturers and suppliers. With close to 600 exhibitors, the
2014 show is sure to provide the solutions you need to run a successful operation.
Thanks to your continued support, Farmfest has been recognized by Expo Magazine
as the 4th fastest growing tradeshow on the 25 Top Fast-Growth Shows of 2013.
And this year, we plan on moving up in the ranks with yet another show that is
bigger and better than ever.
The grounds of the 2014 Minnesota Farmfest are abuzz with drone demos, Ride &
Drives, and in this election year, political forums. Take advantage of our new on-site
shuttle, sponsored by AgStar, and be sure not to miss any of these exciting events.
The shuttle will make multiple stops around the perimeter of the show throughout
the day. Just look for the FARMFEST SHUTTLE STOP signage and hop on!
While you’re here, don’t forget to check out our Register to Win and Product Spotlight
sponsors. There are a number of great prizes to win and new products to see!
Once again, thank you for your support of Farmfest and here’s to a great show!

Dear Friends,
Warm greetings to all
of you who have taken
the time to exhibit or visit
Farmfest this year. Like
many other annual events
that have become a tradition and
play an important role in defining
who we are, 2014 would indeed be
incomplete without a day or more
of looking and listening at the
beautiful Gilfillan Estate.
It is a chance to meet old friends
and make new ones. It’s also a chance
to see and experience the very latest
equipment and technology, which
helped reach production goals never
thought possible 40 years ago.
When I started farming in 1974, new
technology for me was a new tractor
with a cab, air conditioning, and an
automatic reset plow. Today, science
and technology plays a dominant role
in supporting and refining agriculture
in the 21st century.
For the past 33 years, Farmfest has
been the event to showcase the
precision agriculture that supports
the abundant production enjoyed
by our farmers and ranchers. So,
if you are interested in equipment,
you can find it all at Farmfest. If it’s
agriculture policy and discussion
you seek, Farmfest is on the “do not
miss” list for publicly elected officials,
commodity leaders, and future
agricultural policymakers.
My hearty congratulations to all
the folks, both past and present,
who have worked so hard to make
Farmfest such a huge success and
thanks to you for attending.
Regards,
Dave Frederickson
Commissioner, Minnesota Department
of Agriculture

Attention to
Grain Quality
Keeps People Safe
By Mike Martin
Smart management keeps stored grain in good condition,
reduces the need to enter a bin.
To avoid grain entrapment, stay out of grain bins. Oversimplified? Given all of the variables—
probably. Yet, “There’s a direct correlation between grain entrapment incidents and out-ofcondition grain,” emphasizes Professor Bill Field, of Purdue University’s Agricultural Safety
and Health Program. Simply put, “When you maintain stored grain quality, safety improves.”
With 32 years of grain management experience and direct responsibility for six elevators,
Bob Marlow has taken a strong stance on the grain quality/safety issue. Marlow, central region
operations manager for The Andersons, volunteered one of his facilities to cooperate with
Purdue University’s field studies to analyze the quality/safety relationship.
Like Field, Marlow pays attention to the safety data and
the causes of incidents. “The single leading factor that
contributes to entering stored grain is that something
happened to affect the grain quality resulting in slow
or no discharge. In most cases, it’s not an equipment
issue. The sump is plugged, fines have compacted and
restricted flow . . . most engulfment tragedies are a result
of someone trying to unplug a bin when grain can still
draw down,” he says.

Cleanliness is key
Increase employee
awareness
A well trained staff—or a
poorly trained one—can make
all the difference. Mistakes
breed quality problems,
“such as someone forgot
to close a hatch and it was
open during a rainstorm,”
Laing says. Introducing stored
grain to moisture is the No. 1
enemy of quality. That human
component may never be
eliminated, but grain quality
management training for staff
members may make people
more aware of the unintended
consequences of their actions.
The Purdue University
Agricultural and Biological
Engineering Department
offers extension programs on
a variety of agriculture topics,
including agriculture safety
and health and post-harvest
grain quality. For information,
including resources for
employee safety training, visit
https://engineering.purdue.
edu/ABE/InfoFor/Safety/
index.html.
Grain quality management is an integral part
of avoiding problems in storage bins, and it all
starts with cleanliness of the bin before loading
new grain. Don’t let this be you: “We’ve cleaned
bins with tons of material that is hard as rock, bins
with layers of grain that look like OSB board,”
says Dave Laing, general manager of Mole•Master
Services Corporation.
The SLAM plan
Problems are best avoided, Marlow suggests, by following a process
that keeps bins and grain in proper condition. “We don’t often have
the luxury of time (during harvest) to handle grain more slowly. Because
you can’t always eliminate the risks when you put grain into storage,
it’s important to recognize that you’re likely to have conditions that can
lead to problems, and you need to go back and address those needs.”
Marlow follows SLAM, a process detailed by Purdue to help ensure
grain quality.
S = Sanitize, Clean, Seal
L = Load, Screen, Level, Core
A = Aeration
M = Monitor
Does the plan involve time
and expense? Yes. But if it
helps you keep people from
having to enter a confined
space, it’s a worthwhile
investment.
The alternative to following SLAM? Grain quality problems have a
compounding effect, Marlow points out. For example, you’re under
the gun of a fast harvest. Some grain comes in too wet; some is high
in fines. You crank up the heat on the dryer to keep grain moving, but
that can lead to increased BCFM. The smaller particles restrict airflow
through your bins. Aeration and cooling are less effective than needed,
you get mold and hot spots, fines settle and compress, resulting in
crusts or bridging that restricts or stops material from flowing. It leads
to the type of situation where people assume their discharge
equipment has failed and tragedy strikes.
Buried in Grain
“Buried in Grain” is run by National Public Radio and lists grain engulfment deaths that
have taken place at federally regulated facilities from across the United States.

Because “Good Enough”
Isn’t Good Enough.
We don’t have to build each product stronger and heavier than
it needs to be. We don’t have to offer everything in multiple
configurations and sizes to meet farmers’ unique needs.
And we don’t have to test each new design for hundreds
of hours, and thousands of acres, before going to market.
But if we didn’t...it just wouldn’t be a Summers.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT
Renewtech’s WT100 Wind Turbine
Renewtech’s WT100 wind turbine takes the unpredictability out of
your electrical costs and safeguards your operations against rising
utility bills. Electrical costs are significantly reduced as you produce
the energy you are consuming, and in the event your wind turbine
produces more power than you need, sell it back to the utility
company with a Power Purchase Agreement. Add these savings
to government incentive programs and your return on the initial
investment is captured within years. Visit Renewtech at booth #4501.
Thunder Creek Trailers
Thunder Creek Equipment continues to bring innovative solutions
to Farmfest in booth #1000 with two new fuel and service trailers:
a 500-gallon utility box trailer and a 500-gallon service special
trailer. Each features a fully baffled 500 gallon diesel fuel tank and
storage space in a rear utility box. The Service Special model is also
equipped with two side storage areas. Enhance either model with
a variety of options as well as a 100-gallon DEF Delivery Solution.
See how these trailers can maximize your field time. Visit Thunder
Creek at booth #1000.

Minnesota Farmers: Feed the Solution
Currently, families in rural Minnesota miss 40 million meals each year. Any number of those families can be found in
your very own community. Through the Invest an Acre program, you can donate the revenue from a portion of your
2014 crop and 100 percent of the donation will go to feeding families in need right where you live. Stop by Second
Harvest Heartland’s Farmfest booth (#3210) or visit www.HarvestToEndHungerMN.org to learn more.
food drive
38
Since the beginning of 2014 the Redwood Area Food Shelf has distributed
more than 87,000 pounds of food to almost 1600 local families. This year
Farmfest is helping the Food Shelf continue their good work by running
a donation drive at the show. To aid in this effort we’re encouraging attendees
to bring nonperishable food and personal items such as toothbrushes,
toothpaste, and packaged soaps to the show. A drop-off bin will be located
at each gate to collect donations.

commercial vehicle inspectors look
for during a vehicle inspection?
Come watch, listen, and learn as
members of the Minnesota State
Patrol Commercial Vehicle Section
and Minnesota Department of
Transportation demonstrate how
vehicle inspections are conducted,
what they look for, and why.
Inspectors will explain this year’s
many law changes affecting the

revised inspection procedures are
