1.7. Date of issue of the declaration and
period of validity
This EPD is issued on 2013-09-17 and will be
valid for 5 years.
1.8. Information modules
This environmental product declaration refers to
the environmental performance of the extruded
stoneware product with dimensions 33x33 cm and
25x25 cm manufactured by GRES DE ARAGÓN S.A.
taking into account the following stages:
Product stage:
Raw materials extraction and processing (A1)
Transport to the manufacturer (A2)
Manufacturing (A3)
Module D: Benefits and loads beyond the
system boundary from reuse, recovery, and/or
recycling potentials
This EPD is “cradle to gate with options”, i.e.
it includes the product stage with additional
modules (module D in this case), but not
considering the full life cycle.
Product Stage (modules A1, A2, and A3)
Raw materials (A1)
Transport (A2)
Raw materials have different sources according to their
nature and properties.
The origin of more than the 95% of the raw materials is
located at a distance of 60 km or lower, and are transported
in bulk using tracks from the extraction or preparation
place to the factory.
Raw materials used in the fabrication of the enamel are
transported mainly in bulk by land of shipped.
Manufacturing (A3)
The raw materials are prepared at CAÑADA S.A. and the
tiles are made in ARAKLINKER, S.A.; both companies are
located in the same parcel and are owned by GRES DE
ARAGON S.A.
The raw materials are prepared by dry process, after a
milling process and an appropriate dosage using belts with
weight control, the raw materials are mixed with water with
the appropriate ratio and the mix is sent, using conveyor
belts, to the extruder for the forming of the product
The formed pieces are then introduced in dryers to reduce
the moisture content, producing an important increase
in the mechanical resistance, thus allowing subsequent
processing.
The drying cycle is influenced both for the operation
internal parameters (temperature, air flow, etc.) and for
the characteristics of the extruded pieces (dimensions,
moisture content, compactness etc.). The hot air using in
this process is obtained mainly from air recovered from the
refrigeration area of the oven.
The tiles exiting the dryer are coated, using different
techniques, with one or more layers of engobe and glaze.
A second drying process (heat chamber) is applied to other
pieces before their decoration. In general, the engobe is
applied using disks (spray) and the glaze is applied mainly
using a spraying machine. Some of the pieces are decorated
with ink. This treatment is used to give certain technical
and aesthetical properties, like waterproofing, surface easy

to clean, texture, chemical and mechanical resistance, to
the surface of the fired product. The decoration materials
are made in specialized companies in which part of the
raw materials are subject to a fritting process (fusion of the
raw materials and a fast cooling), obtaining insoluble glass.
After the process, the pieces are subjected to a firing
process with 24 hours cycle in which a temperature of 1270
ºC is reached; this process takes place in single-deck roller
kilns. A relevant part of the thermal energy used in this
process comes from heat recovery from other stages. This
is the most important stage in the ceramic tile production
process because this is when the properties of the formed
tiles are fundamentally changed, yielding a hard material
that is resistant to water, ice and chemicals.
1.9. Representativeness of the EPD
This Environmental Product Declaration
contains environmental information regarding
tiles of the water absorption group AIIa
with dimensions 33x33 cm and 25x25 cm,
enameled or not, of GRES DE ARAGÓN S.A.
Comparation of construction products shall
be based on the same function, using the
same functional unit at building level (or
architectural or civil engineering works), i.e.
including the performance of the product
during the life cycle and the requirements
stated in EN ISO 14025, 6.7.2
EPD from different program operators might
be not directly comparable as the assumptions,
scope and calculation rules might be different.
After the tiles have passed the relevant quality control
processes, also known as sorting, they are packaged using
cardboard, pallets, and polyethylene. The prepared pallet is
then stored in the logistics area of the plant.
All the brokes of ceramic pieces are incorporated in the
process as raw material; only a small part are disposed to
landfill sites. To reduce atmospheric emissions, bag filters
constituted by a textile membrane permeable to gases that
retains dust, are used; the recovered material is introducer
again in the process.

3.3. Environmental additional information
Gres de Aragón is committed to making ongoing
improvements to its production processes and products as
a means of ensuring greater customer satisfaction. It is also
environmentally aware, using an integrated Environmental &
Quality-Control Management System certified as complying
with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
In 2007, GRES DE ARAGON put into operation a new
extruded clinker manufacturing plant, ARAKLINKER S.A. it is
designed to comply with Best Available Techniques (BAT) for
the tile sector, managing to achieve a reduction in fuel and
electricity consumption and minimizing atmospheric and CO2
emissions that contribute to climate change, all in parallel
with improvements to the quality of the company’s products.
The ratios of thermal consumption and CO2 emissions per
processed tonne are bellow the values of ceramic IPPC1 and
the average values of the sector (according to AVEN2 ) for
tunnel furnaces.
The plant has been awarded an Integrated Environmental Permit
(AAI in Spanish), and is certified as complying with following an
inspection by the Regional Government of Aragon. As a result, it
complies with all legal environmental requirements.
Within the initiatives undertaken by the company to
guarantee more sustainable production processes, mention
should be made of:
• Zero dumping of wastewater: All wastewater generated
during the glazing stage is re-used in the production
process. In this way, it does not have to be physically or
chemically treated, which is what originates the slurry that
then requires waste management.
• Re-used ceramic waste from the production process: In
the case of klinker tiles, more than 99% of ceramic waste
(filtered dust and fired and unfired waste) is re-used as
raw materials in the manufacturing process, leading to
the production of clinker tiles with a 45% pre-consumer
recycled content.
• Minimizing the environmental impact of the waste of the
cardboard packaging: In the year 2013 the design of the
cardboard packaging was changed by reducing the area
of printed areas and substituting white kraft paper by bare
brown paper
• Ongoing energy efficiency improvements. In the last
few years some investments have been made to reduce
consumption of electricity and natural gas. These are the
most important:
• Optimizing 15% consumption of gas in production
processes during 2013
• Automatic switching on and off of indoor and outdoor
light in the plant
• Automatic switching on and off of the air extraction
within plant having two levels of temperature
• Incorporating variable frequency drives to reduce
electricity consumption by equipment in the ventilators
of drying chambers
• Instalación de cintas para movimentación de residuos de
residuo cerámico para evitar el traslado con camiones
de 25 tn.
3.4. Additional information regarding the
release of dangerous substances into
indoor air, soil and water during use
stage
3.4.1. Indoor air emissions
In the ceramic tile manufacturing process, tiles
are subjected to a thermal process above 1000 ºC.
At these temperatures, any organic compound in
the compositions decomposes, yielding an inert
end-product free of any volatile organic compounds
that might be released in the use stage
3.4.2. Release into soil and water
Ceramic tiles release no compounds into the soil or
water during their use stage because a completely
inert product is involved that undergoes no physical,
chemical, or biological transformations, is neither
soluble nor combustible, and does not react physically
or chemically or in any other way, is not biodegradable,
and does not adversely affect other materials with
which it enters into contact such that it might produce
environmental pollution or harm human health. It is
a non-leaching product, so that it does not endanger
the quality of surface water or groundwater.
