Chapter 1 - Introduction
Overview
The Image MASSter IM4008i is a fast and effective solution for mass software duplication especially
required by IT managers and production technicians.
This compact unit is a high-speed software
duplication tool designed for copying a full
software suite from a master hard drive to up
to eight target drives simultaneously. The Image MASSter IM4008i copies and verifies data
between IDE, EIDE and Ultra-DMA IDE hard
drives. The unit supports ATA-6 features including DCO1, HPA2, and 48-bit Addressing.
Transfer rates on the IM4008i can exceed 1.8
GB per minute. The unit supports PIO mode
and Ultra DMA mode transfer speeds. The
IM4008i allows copying to different size and
model drives. The IM4008i automatically partitions and formats the target drives.

Quick Start Setup
Refer to Unpacking procedures in this manual.
1. Place the Image MASSter IM4008i on a level surface.
2. Attach the AC power cord to the back of the IM4008i unit and to an electrical outlet. The
voltage may be either 110v or 220v. The unit will automatically switch to use either
voltage.
It is suggested that you use a power surge protector.
3. Secure the Drive Tray on top of the unit by aligning its pins to the corresponding mating
holes on top of the unit and snapping it in place. Do not try to force the pins all the way
into the holes.
Note:
When the Drive Tray is in position it will sit approximately ¼”
off the top of the unit.
4. Attach the nine data connectors to the IM4008i unit.
5. Attach the nine HDD power cables to the unit.
6. Place the master hard disk drive in drive bay location 1, which is located just above the
ICS logo.
Note:
It is recommended to orient each drive so that its controller
board is facing left when placed in its drive bay.
7. Place one to eight target drives in drive bays.
8. Connect each drive slot’s data and power cable to the corresponding drive in the bay.
Note:
Verify that data cable’s pin one is oriented so that it is
aligned next to the drive’s power connector. This will require
a slight twist of the data cable.
9. Power ON the unit.
10. Verify settings.

screen to begin the duplication process. Refer to the
Operational Procedures
chapter of this manual for
running specific copy modes.

RJ-45 connection. Use this port for IM4008i software upgrades. Connect the IM4008i to the serial port of the host
machine using the RJ-45 cable and adapter provided.
Use with PCMCIA Flash Card for software upgrading
and saving log information.
Connect the HDD power and data cables to these connectors.
Connect AC power cord (provided) to this socket to power
the unit.
Press down to turn IM4008i ON.
Use these buttons to step through screen menus and
make selections.
Use these buttons to move the cursor up, down, left, right.
LEDs on front panel for each Target Drive will blink green

Hardware Accessories

Notebook Drive Adapters: Enables the IM4008i to support a variety of notebook models via direct connection of the proprietary notebook drive interface to the IM4008i IDE interface. Adapters are available to support a variety of notebook models including:
ThinkPad 701/755/760, Compaq LTE/Armada, NEC, Dell, Toshiba Tecra. The ICS standard 2.5 in. adapter supports all notebook HDDs removed from their proprietary enclosures.

PCMCIA-ATA Adapter: Provides support for duplicating PCMCIA-ATA-type devices.
ƒ
SATA adapters and panel: Provides support for duplicating SATA drives. SATA and IDE
drives can be mixed when using individual adapters or the entire unit can be converted
for SATA drives when using the 9 channel adapter.
Software Add-on Options
Add-on options provide enhanced operational features not available in the basic software. The
following Add-on options are offered for the IM4008i. Refer to the Add-on Options Certificate for
the Authorization Code required to enable an option. Instructions for enabling options are in the
Operational Procedures chapter of this manual.
Note:
Some add-on options may be pending release.
MultiMASSter
The MultiMASSter option provides the user with the ability to store multiple “software loads” on a
single drive. The user can then select and copy individual “software loads” from the
MultiMASSter drive to one to eight target drives.
DCO
The Image MASSter 4008i unit supports copying DCO4 configured source drives when the DCO
option is installed. If DCO is detected on the source drive, the copy operation will configure the
target HDD with similar DCO settings.
HPA
The Image MASSter 4008i unit supports copying HPA5 configured source drives when the HPA
option is installed. If an HPA area exists on a source drive, the copy operation will configure the
target HDD with a similar HPA area.

User Interface
The IM4008i provides a graphical screen menu display and easy-to-use button interface, which
the user can use to step through functions for operating the unit. Refer to the Operation chapter
for descriptions of functions and for detailed Front Panel usage.
The front panel contains four Directional Buttons - identified by the arrows ⇐ ⇑ ⇒ ⇓ . These buttons move the cursor up, down, right and left. There are three Control Buttons, each identified in
the Main Menu screen: Run, Set, Info. These buttons are not always identified with the same
label on every screen as different functions are assigned at various menu levels.
When a screen shows an item followed by three dots or an arrow for example, it indicates that
sub-menu choices exist. Use the right arrow button or press Select to scroll to the sub-menu
choices. An example follows showing the HD Geometry Set menu item.

Screen Menus
Functional descriptions of screen menu items are discussed in the following section.
Set Menu
The Set Menu provides user-defined settings to configure the unit for customized operation. A
context-sensitive help feature is available which when selected will describe the particular function in more detail. All settings are saved when selected. The following is a generic procedure to
access the Set Menu screens and select Set Menu items:
The method for using the screen menus will be the same for all settings. Following is a generic
procedure to access the screens and select menu items:
1. Select Set from Main Menu by pressing the middle Control Button.
2. Scroll to and highlight the desired function (menu item) by using the Directional Buttons.
3. To display submenus use the right Directional Button or press the Select Button.
4. Press the Select Button to choose the highlighted item
5. Press Run to access the Run Menu screen.

Refer to Operational Procedures chapter for detailed instructions on using the
menus. More detailed explanations of the Copy Modes are available in the Glossary.

Copy Mode
IQCOPY
Provides an “intelligent” method of copying and scaling. Only allocated files are copied.
Supports FAT16, FAT32 (Hidden or Non-Hidden) and NTFS-(Hidden or Non-Hidden)
type partitions. This copy mode is the preferred method of copy when copying between
different size drives. See Appendices for detailed description of IQCOPY.
% of Disk
The % of Disk copy mode provides a sector-by-sector method of copying data. Allocated
and unallocated sectors are copied. It supports copying of all file systems. This copy
mode is recommended when IQCOPY cannot be used due to the file system in use and

when copying between same size drives. See Glossary for detailed description of
IQCOPY.
WipeOut
The WipeOut copy mode provides two functions to erase all data from target drives.
WipeOut Fast will clean drives in one pass using a user-defined pattern value. WipeOut
DoD will “sanitize” drives using the Department of Defense standard. This entails a total
of 7 passes using the DoD standard pattern values.
Block Map
Provides the user with the ability to select up to 10 ranges of sectors to be copied from
the master drive to the target drive(s). The copy method implements a sector-by-sector
copy method.
MultiMASSter
The MultiMASSter copy mode provides the user with the capability of selecting and copying from a list of software loads created on a MultiMASSter drive using the MultiMASSter
Creator function.
The MultiMASSter function is accessible only when the MutiMASSter option is enabled.
MM Creator
The MultiMASSter Creator copy mode provides the user with the capability of creating
multiple software loads on a single “MultiMASSter” drive.
The MultiMASSter Creator function is accessible only when the MutiMASSter option is
enabled.
Verify
Checks data integrity during the transfer process.
None
Verification will not be performed.
Full
Verifies each byte during the copy process by reading back and comparing.
Note: In PIO mode of operation the data transfer rate will be reduced when Verify
is enabled. The transfer rate will not be reduced if the unit selects UDMA
mode of operation.
Partial
This setting can be adjusted between 1% and 100%. Only the percentage entered is
read-back and verified. This is a fast way to ensure that the data path is valid and the
unit is functioning properly.
Only
Runs a read-back-verify cycle only, comparing data between the master and target
drives. This is useful if those targets have been previously copied using the % of Disk
copy method. It is not to be used with targets that have been copied using IQCopy.

Remainder
This setting when enabled provides a quick method to check remaining area of target drives for
surface defects after IQCOPY completes the data transfer. Quick read operations are performed
on the remaining sectors of the target drives.
Identical Mode
This setting when enabled instructs IQCOPY to transfer an image of the master drive’s partition
and boot sector information to the target drive without the need of updating this information once
transferred. This results in a more efficient data transfer operation. Enabling this setting is recommended only when copying to drives with the same capacity.
Partition Scaling
This menu item provides both an auto and manual method of determining the proper partition
scaling method to be used to configure the target drives. When selected the user can select to
enable or disable “Auto Scale”. When enabled, IQCOPY will analyze the master drive and scales
target partitions in proportion to those on the master drive. When disabled, the following submenu items will be displayed for manual selection.
Scale First Partition
When enabled, first partition will be scaled. Other scaling settings will not affect this partition. When disabled, first partition will not be scaled.
Scale FAT16
When enabled, all FAT16-type partitions will be scaled. Additional FAT16-type partitions
will be created to utilize free drive space. When disabled, all FAT16-type partitions will
not be scaled and no additional FAT16 partitions will be created to utilize free drive
space.
Scale FAT32
When enabled, all FAT32-type partitions will be scaled. When disabled, all FAT32-type
partitions will not be scaled.
Scale NTFS
When enabled, all NTFS type partitions will be scaled. When disabled, all NTFS-type
partitions will not be scaled.
Hidden FAT32
When enabled, all Hidden FAT32 type partitions will be scaled. When disabled, all Hidden FAT32 type partitions will not be scaled.
Hidden NTFS
When enabled, all Hidden NTFS type partitions will be scaled. When disabled, all Hidden
NTFS type partitions will not be scaled.

HD Geometry
This menu item provides both an auto and manual method of determining a number of drive geometry related parameters to be used to configure the target drives. When selected, user can
select to enable or disable “Auto Geometry”. When enabled, IQCOPY will analyze the master
drive to determine the proper parameters to use. When disabled, the submenu items below will
be displayed for manual selection.
CHS Translation (Cylinder Head Sector)
Selects the translation method used by the copy process. The available translation
methods are as follows.
LBA
Translates physical number of heads to 255. This is the most common translation
method used by most PC BIOS. Leave as default unless target drive fails to boot.
LARGE
Translates physical number of heads to 128 or 240. Use this translation method if
the target drive fails to boot using the LBA translation method. This translation
method is commonly used by Compaq PCs.
Compaq Old
Uses similar translation as LARGE with slight variation. This setting will automatically
be used if master drive is detected as using the same translation method and if Compaq configured drive is detected.
Compaq New
Uses similar translation as LBA with slight variation. This setting will automatically
be used if master drive is detected as using the same translation method and if Compaq configured drive is detected.
Sub #cyl
The "Sub #cyl" switch adds flexibility for last cylinder usage. The CHS Translation
method used by the PC BIOS may or may not make use of the last cylinder of a drive.
Last cylinder usage is also dependent upon whether the BIOS supports "Extended Interrupt 13 Service (x13)", which is required for large drive support. This may result in a 1 to
2 cylinder mismatch between formatted capacity and total drive capacity as seen by
FDISK.
The following “Sub #cyl" options are available:

-0 will format using last drive cylinder.
-1 will format using 1 drive cylinder less.
-2 will format using 2 drive cylinders less.
AUTO is the recommended default setting.

HD Geometry - Remaining Sectors
The Remaining Sectors switch adds IQCOPY flexibility when determining total sectors
used by target drive. When identifying a drive, two different values (CHS and LBA) indicating total sectors can be returned by the drive. The CHS value rounds off the total cylinders, which could result in a target drive formatted with less sectors than what the drive
physically has. Normally a BIOS will use this value to determine total number of sectors.
The LBA value uses the total physical number of sectors. When set to Yes, IQCOPY will
use the LBA value for total sectors.
HD Handling
This menu item provides the user with the flexibility of selecting various hard disk drive operational-related settings.
Bad Sector
The Bad Sector switch adds flexibility when encountering bad sectors during the copy
process. The following Bad Sector switch options are available.
Prompt
When Prompt is enabled, the user will be prompted when a bad sector is detected on the source drive. The user will then be given the option to abort or continue the copy process.
Continue
When Continue is enabled and a bad sector is detected on the source drive, the
copy operation will log the bad sector and attempt to continue.
Skip Block
Provides improved bad sector handling by providing operator with the option to
skip entire block of sectors if a bad sector exists within the block of sectors read.
Enabling this feature reduces the copy time required to copy a drive containing
many bad sectors in comparison to the default operation in which individual bad
sectors within the block of sectors are skipped..
Abort
When Abort is enabled and a bad sector is detected on the target drive the target drive with the bad sector will be turned off. The operation will continue for the
remaining drives.
Note:
Skipping bad sectors may result in an incomplete data transfer operation.
HD Cache
When disabled, the HD Cache is not used during data transfer.
Note:

Disabling HD Cache will result in slower transfer rates.

Clr Cache
Enabled this setting to instruct the copy operation to send a “Flush Cache” command to
the target drives at the end of the operation. The “Flush Cache” command instructs the
drive’s controller to empty and write any of it’s data buffer contents to the drive’s media.
Since drives automatically perform this operation after a data is written to the drive’s data
buffer, enabling this setting is generally not required.
Speed
The Speed menu item provides the user with the flexibility of selecting the speed at
which the operation will run under. This feature is intended to provide a method to reduce the transfer rate during operation. This could be required for cases in which some
drive combinations have difficulty when running under the higher auto selected transfer
rate.
Note:
It is not recommended to use this setting to attempt to increase the transfer
rate of operation.
AUTO
The optimized speed will be automatically determined during operation.
UDMA
Allows the user to select UDMA speeds from 0 to 4 (Fastest).
PIO
Allows the user to select PIO speeds between 1 (Fastest) and 7.
Auto Run
In a production environment, running a burn-in cycle on new drives may be recommended. Enabling the Auto Run function starts a continuous cycle of the duplication
process in any Copy Mode to the target drive. During Auto Run the IM4008i powers the
drive on and off repeatedly, providing verification of hardware and software integrity. This
function supports reliability-type testing.
Benchmark
This function helps to isolate malfunctioning drive(s) which cause slower than expected
transfer rates. The function is enabled by selecting
SET/ HD Handling/Benchmark/Single from the main menu. The Default setting will
benchmark all target HDDs at once and the Single setting will benchmark each target individually.
Certify
"Certify Mode" power cycling function can be used to bypass a drive's "certify mode" feature. Some drive models may be in a "certify" mode state during first time usage resulting in a slower than expected transfer rate. The function is enabled by selecting SET/HD
Handling/Certify/3, 5, 10, 15. Each setting corresponds to the number of power cycles
the drive will perform prior to beginning the copy operation. Selecting 3 for example, will
result in the drive(s) power cycling 3 times (15 seconds per power ON, and 5 seconds
per power OFF).

WriteVrfy
Allows disabling “Write Verify” mode for some drive models prior to copy operation. Some drive models may have a “Write Verify” feature enabled during first

This function provides the user with the ability to add options.
Logging
Logging provides the user with the capability of displaying and storing LOG results performed by
the last operation and storing DATABASE results performed by multiple operations. Three log
files are stored for the last operation performed. The log files are called SETTINGS.TXT,
MESSAGES.TXT and OPINFO.TXT. The SETTINGS.TXT file stores the unit’s configuration settings. The MESSAGES.TXT file stores the event log as displayed by the LCD display. The
OPINFO.TXT file stores operational information. The LOG results are stored internally and can be
saved to Compact Flash media. The LOG results are over written after each operation.
DATABASE records are saved and appended for each operation performed. The DATABASE
records are stored internally in a file called DATABASE.DAT. The file can be saved to Compact
Flash media for viewing or printing purposes.
LOG
This menu item provides the user with a choice of saving LOG information in different
levels of detail. The following levels can be selected:
None
Logging will be disabled when None is selected.
Brief
The results logged are the same as those displayed on the screen when the operation completes.
Detailed
Additional information is saved such as detailed drive partition information.
Diagnostic
Additional low-level operational detail is saved. This includes software debugtype information.
DATABASE
This menu item provides the user with a choice of saving DATABASE information in different levels of detail and the capability of sending the DATABASE.DAT file to Compact
Flash Media. The following DATABASE functions are available .levels can be selected:

This function provides the user with the capability of saving multiple user defined settings.
Up to 20 settings can be defined and saved. The following submenu functions are provided.

Provides the user with the function to save multiple setting configurations, each under
a user-defined name.

Load
Provides the user with the function to configure the unit from a list of multiple stored
setting configurations.

Delete
Provides the user with the function to delete previously stored setting configurations.
Lock Settings
Provides the user with the function to password protect the unit’s currently stored settings. The user is prompted to enter a 5-digit password code.

Provides the user with the function to clear the unit’s settings password. Once the password is cleared the settings can be modified. The user is prompted to enter the previously stored 5-digit password code.

When selected the unit’s settings will be restored to factory default settings.
Diagnostics
The Diagnostic SET menu item provides the user with the capability of performing maintenance
related tests to verify that the unit is properly functioning. The following Diagnostic menu item is

Run Menu
The Run menu provides the user with the ability to begin the selected Copy Mode operation.
When selected, the user is presented with the Run
screen, which provides the user with real-time
operational information. The message lines of the
Run screen will confirm settings: in this example –
Percent of Disk copy mode is selected.
Select Run again from this screen to begin the copy process.
During the Copy Process
While the operation is being performed, the screen will display the status of the operation as it
progresses.
Time Left indicates how long it will take to copy the Master at the current rate of transfer.
The Dial Gauge indicates the current rate of transfer - this can increase or decrease depending
on the condition of the Master and Target(s).
Progress Bar Indicator is a horizontal gauge that indicates the percentage of operation that has
been completed.
Bottom Message Line will display operational information as necessary.
Stopping During Operation
Press Stop to stop the duplication process during the copy operation.
When Transfer is Complete
The gauges, indicators and Message Line will indicate when the operation has completed.
When copying is complete, the Image MASSter automatically powers-down the Master and Target Drives. Hard drives may then be disconnected from the Image MASSter 4008i console unit.
The unit does not need to be turned OFF at this time.
Caution: Do not remove the drives until the LED indicator above each drive has
stopped blinking.
After the Copy process has finished the Message Log can be reviewed by using the Directional
Buttons to scroll through the Message Window. The LED Status Lights will provide a visual
indication of the result of the operation. The LED will turn Green to indicate a successful operation and Red for a failed operation.
Settings: The settings from the prior copy process will remain set until the user changes them
and will also remain in effect if the unit is turned off.

Creating a MultiMASSter Drive
A MultiMASSter drive can be created using the MultiMASSter Creator
function. This function can be used to append software loads to a
MultiMASSter drive without overwriting the previously copied software
loads.
1. Connect an unpartitioned drive to the unit’s target one drive position. This drive
will be used as the MultiMASSter drive.
2. Connect the drive, which contains a master software load to the unit’s master
drive position. The Volume Label should be descriptive for each load, since this
will be used to identify the MultiMASSter software loads during a copy operation.
3. Select Set from Main Menu by pressing the middle Control Button.
4. Select Copy Mode from the Set Menu .
5. Select MM Creator.
6. Press Run to access the Run Menu screen.

Set partition as “Scalable” or “Not Scalable”. When set to “Scalable” the target
partition will be auto scaled to drive’s capacity. If set to “Not Scalable”, the target
partition will not be scaled. If the “Partition Size” setting is changed from it’s default value, the target drive’s partition will be scaled to the changed value.

Viewing and Saving Operational Log Information
After the operation completes the operational log can be viewed or
saved using the ICS Supplied PCMCIA Flash Card.
The following procedure describes the method to view and save the
Operational Log.
1. From the Set Menu screen use the Directional Buttons to scroll to and highlight
Logging.
2. Display submenu item using the Right Directional Button or press the Select Button.
3. Use the Directional Buttons to scroll to and highlight View Last.
4. Press Select. The Message Menu screen will be displayed.

require the Option Authorization Code supplied by ICS. Please refer

2. Scroll to and highlight Options by using the Directional Buttons.
3. Display submenu item using the right Directional Button or press the Select Button.
4. Highlight Add Option and press

Upgrading Software Using the PCMCIA Flash
Card
The software can be upgraded using the ICS-supplied PCMCIA Flash
Card. Follow the procedure below to upgrade the IM4008i unit’s software.
1. Copy the updated 4008i.EXE file to the ICS-supplied PCMCIA Flash Card. Updated
software can be downloaded from the ICS WEB site.
2. Insert the PCMCIA Flash Card into the IM4008i PCMCIA Slot.
3. From the Info Menu screen use the Directional Buttons to scroll to and highlight
Upgrade software.
4. Press Select. The following message will be displayed.
5. Press Yes. The screen will temporarily return to the Info Menu screen. The upgrade
process will take approximately 10 seconds. When the process completes the Main
Menu will be displayed.

Upgrading Software Using the RJ-45 Port
The software can be upgraded by connecting the IM4008i’s RJ-45
port to a computer’s serial port. Follow the procedure below to upgrade the IM4008i unit’s software.
1. Modify the supplied IM4008i Utility Diskette by making it a bootable system disk. This
can be performed using the WIN95/98 SYS A: command.
2. Copy the updated 4008i.EXE file to the IM4008i Utility disk A:\UPDATE subdirectory.
Updated software can be downloaded from the ICS WEB site.
3. Connect the supplied RJ-45 cable to the IM4008i RJ-45 port located on the side of the
unit.
4. Connect the supplied RJ-45 Serial Adapter to the RJ-45 cable.
5. Connect the RJ-45 Serial Adapter to the PC's COM1 port. Do NOT power ON the
IM4008i at this time.
6. Insert the IM4008i Utility Diskette in the floppy disk drive of the PC and boot the PC from
this diskette.
7. At the A: prompt type HOSTKEY. A message will be displayed indicating "Phoenix PICO
Serial Keyboard/Video/Disk Server.
8. Power ON the IM4008i.
9. Press <SHIFT> when the PC displays message indicating "Starting MS-DOS". The C:
drive letter is now assigned to the IM4008i.
10. From the DOS prompt C:\, run the command A:\UPDATE.
11. Power OFF the IM4008i and disconnect from the PC.
12. Power ON the IM4008i and wait for the opening menu to be displayed. The upgrade operation is completed at this time.

Glossary
IQCOPY
IQCOPY is an advanced copy method which copies only clusters allocated for file storage. By
ignoring unallocated clusters, the time it takes to copy a drive can be greatly reduced. As an example, if a 4GB-source drive with only 500MB of data is copied using IQCOPY, only 500MB will
be transferred instead of 4GB. IQCOPY will partition and format target drives automatically,
therefore there is no need to prepare partitions on target drives prior to performing the copy operation. IQCOPY recognizes the following file systems:
FAT-16 (2047MB Maximum partition size)
FAT-32
NTFS
Because of IQCOPY's advanced copy method, IQCOPY can also be used to copy between
drives having different capacities. IQCOPY will automatically determine the geometry of the target drives and properly scale partitions accordingly. Partition scaling depends on the type of file
system in use by the source drive’s partitions. In general partitions will be scaled in proportion to
source drive's partitions. See example below.

% of Disk
The % of Disk copy method copies both allocated and unallocated clusters of a drive. This copy
mode implements a sector-by-sector copy method. Because this process is not dependent on
any file system, it can be used to duplicate operating systems not based on the FAT file system,
such as LINUX, NOVELL, HPFS etc. This copy process will take longer when compared to
IQCOPY since all used and unused sectors are copied. The number of sectors copied depends
on the percentage value entered. When set to 100% all sectors will be copied. Because, no partition scaling is performed, it is not recommended to copy between drives of different capacity
using this copy method. If the copy process detects that a target drive’s capacity is smaller than
that of the master, then it will only copy up the capacity of the smallest drive. The partition table
of the master drive, which describes the size of each partition on the drive, will be copied without
modification to the target drive. No partition scaling is performed. This will result in loss of drive
space if the target drive is larger than the master drive is. An example of this would be if the master drive is a 2GB drive with a 2GB partition, and the target is an 8GB drive. The 8GB drive will
be configured using a 2GB partition and the operating system will identify the 8GB drive as a 2GB
drive.
Ultra DMA (UDMA)

The IM4008i performs its high-speed data transfers in Ultra DMA (UDMA) mode. This mode of
operation is a characteristic of the newer IDE disk drives that have been on the market for the
past few years. These newer disk drives also work in their older, original mode called PIO (Programmed I/O). The UDMA mode operates at much faster rates than PIO.
When using disk drives that support UDMA transfer, the IM4008i can run at about two gigabytes
per minute which is more than twice as fast as PIO mode transfer rates.
Another advantage of UDMA is the automatic “on-the-fly” guarantee of data integrity. In UDMA
mode, drives always compute a CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) on the current data block. At
the end of block transfer, the IM4008i compares its own CRC value with the values from the master and target drives. If any of the three values disagree, the IM4008i will re-run the transfer until
the data is verified to be perfect.
The resulting benefit of UDMA is that the system does not need to run the traditional read-backverify phase of data transfer. The overall operation time is twice as fast and the transfer speed is
actually 4X than in PIO mode.
DCO (Device Configuration Overlay)
DCO allows systems to modify the apparent features provided by a HDD device. It provides a set
of commands that allows a utility program to modify some of the commands, modes, and feature
sets reported as supported by the HDD. It can be used to hide a portion of the HDD’s capacity
from being viewed by the operating system and file system.
HPA (Host Protected Area)
HPA is defined as a reserved area for data storage outside the normal operating file system. This
area is hidden from the operating system and file system, and is normally used for specialized
applications. Systems may wish to store configuration data or save memory to the HDD device in
a location that the operating systems cannot change.
Hidden FAT32 Partition
A Hidden FAT32 partition can be created using 3rd party utilities. In effect these utilities change
the standard known signature of the partition to a value (0x1C) unknown by the operating system,
thereby "hiding" the partition.
Hidden NTFS Partition
A Hidden NTFS partition can be created using 3rd party utilities. In effect these utilities change
the standard known signature of the partition to a value (0x17) unknown by the operating system,
thereby "hiding" the partition.
Wipe OUT DoD
The Wipe Out Department of Defense operation is designed to completely erase data from hard
disk drives.

Using ordinary “DELETE” and “ERASE” commands, data on a hard drive remains accessible to a
variety of intrusive procedures. The WipeOut erasure technique provides a solution to this problem using a series of null-coded overwrites that completely remove all data from the hard drive.
The Wipe Out DoD operation is designed to meet U.S. Department of Defense specification
DoD 5220-22M regarding the sanitization of hard drives.
Wipe Out DoD is set by default at the government-standard: Three iterations completely
overwrite a hard drive six times. Each iteration makes two write-passes over the entire drive:
„ the first pass inscribes ONEs (1) over the drive surface (in hex: 0xFF);
„ the next pass inscribes ZEROes (0) onto the surface (in hex 0x00).
After the third iteration, a seventh pass writes the government-designated code “246” across
the drive (in hex 0xF6) - which is then followed by an 8th pass that inspects the drive with a
Read-Verify review.
