Thanks to Joanna Holbrook for making her holiday fudge for us.
Joanna is a great cook and making the fudge for sale is a really nice
fundraiser.
I would also like to thank Rhonda Spears and Frank Stull for their
tireless assistance with the building project. Both have put in countless hours performing numerous tasks from hanging sheetrock, laying
cinderblock, to laying insulation. Please make a special effort to thank
them when you see them. Speaking of the building, the kitchen will be
completed shortly and the heat and air units will be installed
soon. So, pass the word around that CWAB® will have a nice building
for a variety of activities such as parties, weddings and more.
From the staff at CWAB® we wish everyone a safe and
happy holiday time.
Until next month ...
Executive Director Paul Slone assists Rhonda Spears with ceiling insulation in
the recreation building.

faith-based groups and other purposes.”
“Bob and I organized the Foundation to help children and families,
public safety people and their families and organizations in Southern
Oregon; Barry County, Missouri; and Bob’s home town in Cabell
County, WV. Upon his passing in October of 2006, I became more determined to carry out the visions of the Foundation.”
Call 522-6991 for details.
CWAB® Consumer

Drizzle and chilly temperatures didn’t deter a small parade and dozens
of vendors from participating in the annual “Walk and Roll” Wednesday,
October 24th. Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind joined other agencies who assist those with disabilities in a parade from 13th street
down Fourth Avenue to the Big Sandy Arena.
A job fair for the disabled was held inside the arena.
Mayor David Felinton spoke to a small crowd and gave awards to
businesses and individuals recognizing their support for the handicapped.

If l Only Had a Cane
Lyrics by CWAB® consumer
Carolyn Calhoun
(to the tune of “If I Only Had A Brain” from
the “Wizard of Oz”)
I’ve spent oh so many hours
tripping over flowers,
falling in storm drains.
I could unravel the great riddle,
what is the curb and what’s the middle.
My life would be so easy,
I would move so nice and breezy,
if I only had a cane.
Oh, I could walk so easily
from the mountain to the shore,
and then I turn around
and walk some more.
Boy would I be something,
I would be really strutting,
I would be tripping over nothing,
my life would be so easy,
I would move so nice and breezy,
if I only had a cane.

How To Keep Your Eyes Healthy
(ARA) - Many people take their vision for granted. It’s a natural
gift that you don’t appreciate until your vision becomes
impaired, which is common with aging. While eye glasses often
correct age-related near- or far-sighted issues, statistics show
that 22 million Americans end up with either cataracts or AgeRelated Macular Degeneration (AMD) later in life.
AMD is a disease of the eye associated with aging that
gradually destroys sharp, central vision necessary for daily
tasks such as reading or driving. AMD affects the part of the eye
called the macula (light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye),
which allows you to see fine detail.
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects
vision. Cataracts are common and are generally related to
aging. However, some cataracts are linked to such health problems as glaucoma and diabetes, as well as causes such as
steroid and alcohol use, smoking and eye injuries.
Some steps you can take to help prevent vision problems
include wearing sunglasses and a hat to block ultraviolet sunlight, stopping smoking and eating a healthy diet full of green
leafy vegetables, fruits and other foods high in antioxidants.
While you can’t undo damage related to environmental factors and lifestyle choices, you can increase your intake of nutrients specific to maintaining good vision health.
.
December 2007
Page 21
Nutrients that play vital roles in eye health include:
* Vitamin A - Vitamin A deficiency can result in night
blindness and blindness due to the destruction of the
cornea.
* Vitamins C and E - Both have strong antioxidant qualities that are thought to fight against cataracts by helping to keep the protein in the eye healthy.
* Zinc - Zinc is necessary for the retina to create
enzymes needed for vision. Increased zinc in the diet
may decrease vision loss in patients with AMD.
* Lutein - A supplement that works extremely well in
protecting the retina against sunlight damage, daily
supplements may decrease the occurrence of AMD by
more than 50 percent.
Early detection and treatment are crucial to fighting vision
disorders and may save your sight. For those age 60 or older,
have a comprehensive eye exam once every two years so your
eye doctor can check for signs of AMD, glaucoma and other
vision disorders.
In addition to doctor visits, adding the nutrients previously
mentioned, along with a blend of natural herbs, will not only be
good for your vision, but for overall good health as well.

“Who was that masked man? Er, woman? Er, .....”
Everyone had a howling good time during CWAB®’s recent
consumer Halloween Party.
The party, held Friday, October
‘19th, drew over thirty consumers and their guests offering a
wide variety of traditional and unique costumes.
Refreshments were served and “parade of costumes” gave
everyone an opportunity to review costumes before awards
were given in a variety of categories.
The consumer Halloween Party is one of CWAB®’s most
popular (and fun) events.
For information about CWAB’s other recreational activities,
feel free to contact Linda Worthy Recreational Coordinator at
522-6991.

It is the time of year when Medicare begins mailing out letters
concerning the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans. These
letters often contain information concerning upcoming
changes in benefits and premium costs.
I wanted to take this opportunity to remind all of our consumers that there is help available through Cabell-Wayne
Association of the Blind and our In-Home Services Department.
If you receive one of these letters and want someone to
look over it for you, please call us at (304) 522-6991 and ask for
Toni. If I am unavailable you can leave a voice message and I
will get back with you as soon as possible.

“GUIDE PAGE” offers a unique look into the
past of Cabell-Wayne Association of the
Blind. Then labeled as “Cabell-Wayne Services for the
Visually Impaired” or “C-W-S-V-I,” issues from 1990
and 1991 show the organization young and vibrant and
beginning to expand.
This month we will feature the issue from
December 1990.
As you will see, this particular
month’s magazine was only four pages - therefore we
will reprint it in its entirety.
