Introduction
The Nobar, Thar, Canoe and HiHo c l a i m group was s t a k e d i n 1980 by Gataga
J o i n t Venture i n the name of Welcome North Mines Ltd. t o c o v e r a p o s s i b l e s t r i k e
extension of s t r a t i f o r m z i n c - l e a d - s i l v e r m i n e r a l i z a t i o n on the Bear c l a i m s l o c a t e d
10 km t o the n o r t h e a s t .

T h e Nobar, Thar,
Canoe and HiHo c l a i m s a r e p a r t of a l a r g e r group whose ownership was t r a n s f e r r e d
from Welcome North Mines Ltd. t o Getty Canadian Metals, Limited i n A p r i l 1981.
The e x p l o r a t i o n program was managed by Archer, Cathro & A s s o c i a t e s (1981) Limited
and was d i r e c t e d i n the f i e l d f o r the f i f t h successive season by R.C.
Carne.
About 150 s o i l samples were taken a t roughly 50 m x 100 m i n t e r v a l s on
the Nobar and Thar c l a i m s .
The remainder o f the claim group was n o t sampled
by the d a t e of f i l i n g o f this work.
Topographic c o n t r o l f o r the geochemical
survey was e s t a b l i s h e d w i t h the a i d of a contoured 1:5,000 s c a l e o r t h o p h o t o
map produced from a e r i a l photography flown by GJV i n 1979.
The 198Fwork was
c a r r i e d out i n the period June 1 t o June 7.
Location and Access
The Nobar, Thar, Canoe and HiHo c l a i m group i s l o c a t e d immediately s o u t h e a s t
w
of the c e n t r a l South Gataga Lakes on NTS map sheet 94F/14W ( F i g u r e 1 ) .

centre of the group is l o c a t e d a t l a t i t u d e 57'54'N and l o n g i t u d e 125'43'W.
Access i s by f l o a t - e q u i p p e d , fixed-wing a i r c r a f t from Watson Lake, Yukon
T e r r i t o r y , about 310 km t o the n o r t h w e s t , t o Mayfield Lake l o c a t e d about 30
km n o r t h e a s t o f the property.
T h e n e a r e s t l a r g e town, 200 km t o the e a s t , i s
F o r t Nelson which does n o t have a f l o a t p l a n e base.
Fuel and camp supplies
used f o r the 1981 program were t r u c k e d 300 km from Watson Lake t o Muncho Lake
( k m 747 on the Alaska Highway) and f e r r i e d 100 km d u r i n g mid-April, 1981 by
ski-equipped, s i n g l e Otter a i r c r a f t t o a winter a i r s t r i p l o c a t e d a t the headwaters
of Driftpile Creek.
F i e l d work was conducted w i t h a h e l i c o p t e r supported program
based a t a permanent camp o c a t e d on D r i f t p i l e Creek, a b o u t 25 km t o the northwest.

The Gataga Lakes a r e a l i e s w i t h i n Kechika Trough, a s o u t h e a s t e r l y e x t e n s i o n
of the much l a r g e r Selwyn Basin.

Sedimentary rocks range i n age from Cambrian
P r i o r t o u p p e r Devonian, e a s t e r l y d e r i v e d c l a s t i c
sedimentary assemblages r e f l e c t normal sedimentation while the w e s t e r l y d e r i v a t i o n
of upper Devonian t o M i s s i s s i p p i a n sedimentary rocks r e s u l t e d from block f a u l t i n g
and up1 i f t along the c o n t i n e n t a l margin.

a r e summarized on Figure 2 .
S t r u c t u r e d geology of the a r e a i s dominated by n o r t h w e s t e r l y - t r e n d i n g ,
e a s t e r l y - d i r e c t e d thrust f a u l t s .

Upper Devonian s i l i c e o u s and p y r i t i c b l a c k s h a l e s a r e h o s t t o numerous
s t r a t i f o r m b a r i t e and b a r i t e - l e a d - z i n c d e p o s i t s i n the a r e a , n o t a b l y t h o s e a t
D r i f t p i l e Creek, some 10 km along strike t o the s o u t h e a s t and a t the Cyprus
Anvil-Hudson Bay Oil and Gas Cirque c l a i m s , l o c a t e d about 130 km s o u t h e a s t
of the a r e a .
Soil sampling o v e r the Nobar, Thar, Canoe and HiHo c l a i m group was designed
t o test the p o t e n t i a l of the underlying upper Devonian s h a l e s which a r e h o s t
t o a small s t r a t i f o r m z i n c - l e a d - s i l v e r showing on the GJV Bear c l a i m s l o c a t e d
10 km along s t r u c t u r a l strike t o the northwest.
Geoc herni ca 1 Su r vey
During the p e r i o d June 1 t o June 7, 1981 approximately 150 s o i l samples
were c o l l e c t e d from the Nobar and Thar c l a i m s and a d j a c e n t a r e a s .
Samples
were taken every 50 m a l o n g t r a v e r s e lines spaced a t 100 m i n t e r v a l s and running
perpendicular t o the regional s t r u c t u r a l g r a i n .
Samples, taken from the
"B'I
s o i l horizon where p o s s i b l e , were l o c a t e d w i t h the a i d of a H i p Chain measuring
device from base lines e s t a b l i s h e d w i t h a nylon c h a i n on a contoured 1:5,000
s c a l e orthophoto map.
Sample l o c a t i o n s were marked w i t h their prenumbered k r a f t
bag designation on orange survey f l a g g i n g .
All samples were shipped a i r f r e i g h t
t o Chernex Labs Ltd., North Vancouver, B.C. where they were d r i e d , s c r e e n e d t o
a minus 80 mesh f r a c t i o n and analyzed r o u t i n e l y f o r copper, l e a d , zinc and silver
c o n t e n t using a n i t r i c - p e r c h l o r i c a c i d e x t r a c t i o n and atomic a b s o r p t i o n spectrometry.
Samples which c o n t a i n e d a high barium c o n t e n t r e q u i r e d r e d i g e s t i o n due t o barium
i n t e r f e r e n c e with l e a d a n a l y s i s .

Background l e v e l s f o r the f o u r metals have p r e v i o u s l y been s t a t i s t i c a l l y
e s t a b l i s h e d on r e s u l t s of g r i d s o i l geochemical surveys c a r r i e d o u t by GJV o v e r

Copper anomalies a r e r a r e i n the a r e a , only minor copper values have been
recorded from known m i n e r a l i z a t i o n .
Lead geochemistry has proven t o be the
most valuable tool f o r both r e g i o n a l and d e t a i l e d e x p l o r a t i o n f o r s h a l e hosted
massive sulphide d e p o s i t s .
Lead d i s t r i b u t i o n i n both s o i l and s i l t i s n o t a s
e r r a t i c a s t h a t f o r zinc which has a h i g h mobility i n l o c a l l y a c i d ground waters.
Exotic z i n c s o i l geochemical anomalies r e s u l t i n g from d i s p e r s i o n i n a c i d springs
can range u p t o several p e r c e n t .
S i l v e r d i s t r i b u t i o n i s very e r r a t i c i n s o i l s
which over1 i e t h e Upper Devonian Gunsteel Formation.
Copper, l e a d , z i n c and s i l v e r geochemistry o f the Nobar, Thar, Canoe and
HiHo c l a i m group and surrounding a r e a i s shown on Figures 4 , 5 , 6 and 7, r e s p e c t i v e l y .
Copper.-values a r e low w i t h a few s c a t t e r e d , weakly anomalous values exceeding
t h e 75 ppm threshold value.
Lead s o i l assays a r e uniformly low w i t h maximum
values well w i t h i n background v a r i a t i o n expected f o r t h e a r e a .
Zinc response
i s g e n e r a l l y low although weak t o moderately anomalous values occur from a small
a r e a i n t h e s o u t h e a s t corner of the g r i d .
S i l v e r response i s e r r a t i c .
Scattered
single-sample anomalies a s h i g h a s 7.4 ppm probably r e s u l t from s u r f a c e enrichment

Conclusions and Recommenda t i o n s
A s o i l geochemical survey was conducted over p a r t s of t h e Nobar a n d Thar
claims a t 50 m by 100 m sample spacing between June 1 and June 7 , 1981.
The
samples were analyzed f o r copper, l e a d , zinc and s i l v e r .
No copper or lead anomalies a r e p r e s e n t .
E r r a t i c , anomalous z i n c and s i l v e r
response i s n o t considered t o be economically s i g n i f i c a n t .
i s recommended f o r t h e a r e a sampled.
No f u r t h e r work
The remainder o f the claim block should
be sampled w i t h r e l a t i v e l y wide-spaced l i n e s t o determine whether o r n o t z i n c ,
