club meeting - Bike Hikers
2013 Bike Hikers Tours
from Tour Coordinator Larry Robinson
The first thing I’d like to do as your new club President is
thank the many volunteers who have provided the ideas
and energy that collectively drive our great club, the Bike
Hikers.
The second order of business is to thank all of you for electing a talented Board of Directors. The Board’s primary goal
is to harmoniously blend ideas and energy to steer our organization of 600 plus members toward a year of fun-filled
activities.
Bill Bischoff, who joined the club in July of 2010, is returning as our Treasurer, and he has gone beyond the call of
duty this past year with his detailed work.
Dennis Nolan joined in May of 2008 and replaces me as
our new Membership Secretary. He recently retired from a
career of service that required much discipline and exacting
skills working with culturally diverse people.
Joe Lesh, our new Secretary, signed up in September of
2005 and is the most seasoned club veteran represented
on the new Board. He brings extensive cycling experience
including touring throughout the US and is an expert in
organizing club tours.
Dietmar Sokowski, our new Vice President, is the newest
club member on the Board, as he joined in July of 2011. He
is an expert in project management, business analysis, and
change management. He also provides training in those
areas.
And lastly, me, Greg Smith, our new club President became
a member of this adventurous, fun-loving group we call the
Bike Hikers in November of 2008. I have extensive experience interacting with many different types of folks with
my career and volunteer work. At a conference once, the
facilitator suggested Boards need someone who has the
ability to keep a conversation flowing, grease the skids, and
he called that person a Social Lubricator. I am your club’s
Social Lubricator.
Our club was built by volunteers. It is rich with volunteers of
various skill sets, and it is of paramount importance that we
individually, and as a group, recognize and thank those who
contribute to the creation of our fun camaraderie. Since we
are always looking for more people to thank, please come
forward to volunteer your ideas and energy.
As a team we can work together to keep the Bike Hikers
the Premier Cycling Club of Planet Earth.
Sincerely,
Greg Smith

Mid May thru August The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route
Ride up the spine of the Continental Divide from south to north for
2,700 miles with your friends. The estimated average daily distance is 34 miles. See desert, mountains, and great basins. Visit
Yellowstone, Glacier, Teton, and Rocky Mountain National
Parks. Most of the trip is on dirt or surfaced roads, with some
single track thrown in the mix occasionally. You are never more
than 2 or 3 days from a town with showers, beer and clean sheets.
It’s an adventure many folks have experienced. Last year an 11
year old boy, his sister, mother and father rode this trip. Google
“great divide mountain bike route” for lots of pictures and stories of
the route.

The SACRAMENTO BIKE HIKERS is the oldest continually
active bicycle club in the Sacramento area - founded in 1968.
The club’s focus is on touring and recreational cycling. This ride
schedule provides for year round weekend rides; holiday rides;
summer evening rides; weekday rides; special rides such as the
Party Pardee Century and multi-day rides... A variety of rides
is scheduled to attempt to provide for all abilities and interests.
Riders should review this schedule carefully and select those
rides that fall within their capability... The schedule is available
to interested cyclists at Sacramento area bike shops and is
mailed to all members.
Monthly membership meetings provide club business updates,
open discussion on club activities and policies, and feature
speakers on subjects of interest to cyclists.
Non-members are invited to attend rides and meetings to get a
feel for the club, without obligation.
Riders under age 18 may participate on rides if they are accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.
A sign-in roster is available at the start of each ride. All riders
must sign the roster to be regarded as a participant.
If a rider has to leave a ride for any reason, the ride leader
must be informed.
Helmets are required on all Bike Hiker club rides.

Join my year long challenge of a metric/full century per month.
I am starting out with a fairly easy route for the first three
months (will progress into more challenging rides later in the
year). The short route will ride to Davis and back. The long
route will take a 35 mile loop to Dixon, back to Davis then
home to Sacramento. There is a food stop planned in Davis
to regroup and chat and fuel up (the loop will revisit the food
stop). I will keep a log of who completes each challenge ride
and at the end of the year, give special recognition to those
who made all 12 rides. Come on out...it will be FUN (she

2013 Benefit and Event Rides
Each year, a number of benefit and event rides are included in
our Ride Schedule to encourage members to support our local
cycling clubs (e.g., Davis Bike Club, Sacramento Wheelmen)
and to provide opportunities for members to participate in other
organized events, set goals and challenges. To be included in
our Ride Schedule, the ride must meet distance parameters of
approximately no more than 100 miles from Sacramento or be
included as part of a Club Tour, be available to all members (no
lotteries) and no fund raising is permitted. A Sacramento Bike
Hiker must serve as “sign-in leader” responsible for the
sign-in roster at the event. Club members may receive club
miles for participating in an event ride listed in the Ride Schedule
if they register and pay the entry fee, sign-in on the club roster,
and complete one of the official routes. Members are heartily
encouraged to wear Bike Hiker apparel to show club affiliation.
Because of the increasing popularity of these rides, many now
sell out before the ride date. To facilitate your goal planning
and to give as much advance notice as possible, the following
benefit and event rides have been approved for inclusion in our
2013 Ride Schedule. The following rides meet the requirements
and have member support. We will continue to monitor member
participation in these events to determine whether they will be
included in the schedule next year. If you plan to participate,
register as early as possible to ensure your ride reservation.
Dates will be verified as the year progresses.

Ride Coordinator’s Message
by Elaine Hens & Pam Abbott
Well, here we go again! Looks like 2013 will be another exciting year for the Sacramento Bike Hikers. We want to thank all our ride leaders for continuing to keep the
Ride Schedule filled with interesting and fun choices.
The “Warmer Toes” series starts again on Sunday afternoons in January. The “Hill
Series”, led by Scott Miller, will begin on January 6th and meets every other Sunday
through March 3rd. Each Sunday, a new (and harder) loop is added to the route.
Dan King is offering his “Spring Training” rides from Vic’s Market. The first ride is
January 12th. This is your chance to get in shape for the early season metrics and
centuries. Each ride will get progressively longer as you get progressively stronger.
Watch for the “Lunch” ride series. We have planned one Thursday per month with
a surprise location. And don’t forget to mark your calendar for the SBH Banquet on
February 6th
Dennis King leads the ever popular “Borrego Springs Tour” on Saturday, February
9th ; the Tour de Palm Springs Benefit Ride is an added option. Then on February
23rd you can support “Pedaling Paths for Independence” – a benefit ride in Linden,
CA.
In March, we all look forward to adding up our mileage for “Spring Blitz”. John Grady
has given everyone a new incentive to accumulate mileage. The SBH Club will donate .02 cents per mile ridden by the Spring Blitz participants to the American River
Parkway Foundation. Come out and get your “2 cents worth”!
On Sunday, March 24th, our afternoon “Beginner Ride Series” starts. This is the first
session of a special five-part series designed for cycling “newbies” and those returning to the sport who would like some friendly advice and assistance on basic cycling techniques, safety, fitness, nutrition and simple mechanics. Each session will
include a “show and tell” topic and a ride to practice skills. The rides will gradually
increase in distance.
On Saturday, March 30th, the Party Pardee Pre-ride will be held for all the Party
Pardee Volunteers. Don’t forget to sign up for a committee!
Thanks for all your cooperation with the Ride Board and happy cycling to all,
Pam and Elaine

plus sizes (XXL and XXXL). Men and women sizes available. Jersey fit for both sexes is club cut.
Cash or Check Only, No Credit Cards.
“NO SWEEP” RIDES
“No Sweep” rides designated by this symbol tell
potential riders that they need to be self-sufficient.
No one will be following behind to look out for them should they
need assistance. It tells them that they shouldn’t consider this
ride unless they would probably do it on their own or with a
friend. Basically it’s a ride for experienced riders.
However, ride leaders are encouraged to arrange regroup
points on the route to allow riders to stay together. Riders on
“No Sweep” riders are encouraged to ride together and check
with stopped riders to see if they need assistance. Ride leaders
will still check to make sure everyone returns safely.

RIDE GRADING CODE
THREE FACTORS make up the ease or difficulty of a ride –
not counting such chance factors as traffic, road conditions,
and weather. These factors are important considerations for
riders when selecting rides in which to participate. No rider will
knowingly be left behind alone. However, riders should NOT
sign up for rides beyond their ability. “Biting off more than you
can chew” can result in discouragement or sore muscles, and
invites accidents.
•
Terrain Elevation - Represented by an alpha letter
A - Steep
- Mostly steep grades: strong riders only
B - Steep/Moderate- Some relief from steep grades
C - Moderate
- Hilly; a challenge for the average rider
D - Moderate/Easy - Rolling hills, a challenge for beginners
E - Easy
- Some gentle grades, but no problems
F - Flat
- If any route is really flat
•
•
Distance - Represented by the actual number of miles
Pace - Will range in ‘miles per hour’ between about 12
mph on easy short distance rides to 20+ mph on hard
long distance rides. Generally, the pace increases as the
difficulty (steepness and distance) of the ride increases.
Riders tend to increase their pace as they gain experience, fitness, and are challenged by difficulty. Beginners
and novices are strongly advised to select easy and short
distance rides to start with, and progress up the grading
scale with experience and capability.
