G B 0 0 8 5 DD/134 Hammersmith and Fulham Archives and Local History Centre This catalogue was digitised by The National Archives as part of the National Register of Archives digitisation project N R A 16768 The National Archives ACCESSION NUMBER : 134 SHORT TITLE: M a t e r i a l c o l l e c t e d by Thomas Crofton Croker and T.P.Dillon Croker r e l a t i n g t o Thomas B a y l i s , Theodore Hook and other f r i e n d s REFERENCES DD/l34/l-45e and L 1 - L 3 9 PROVENANCE: Transferred from Pulham ,Library Reference Department, October 1968; o r i g i n a l l y bought from Messrs D o b e l l s , December 1917 Note Perm c f deposit A leather-bound scrap book, 9 inches by 11 inches, containing about 450 pages t o which are stuck miscellaneous corres pondence and p r i n t e d m a t e r i a l S i m i l a r correspondence and p r i n t e d matter l o o s e l y i n t e r l e a v e d i n the book A separate bundle of s i m i l a r correspondence and p r i n t e d matter Forms of reference Each sheet bound i n t o the book was numbered by pages as i n a p r i n t e d book. Occasionally sheets which had obviously been bound i n were found i m p o s i t i o n , but t o r n away from the binding. These were paginated w i t h the bound pages. Blank pages, though numbered, were not included i n the d e s c r i p t i v e l i s t . Where more than one item was stuck to o r w r i t t e n on a page, each such item was given an a l p h a b e t i c a l sub-number f o l l o w i n g i t s page reference, e.g. 22a, 22b. Where loose items were found i n t e r l e a v e d between bound pages, these were sub-numbered numerically according to the order i n which they were faund, and the sub-number placed a f t e r the preceding page number i n the reference. Thus items 27/1-131 were found between pages 27 and 28. Where more than one item was stuck to or w r i t t e n on a loose sheet, each such item was given an a l p h a b e t i c a l sub-number to f o l l o w the loose sheet reference, e.g. 6 7 / 2 a , 6 7 / 2 b . The separate bundle was numbered i n the order found, and the l e t t e r L placed before each reference. Storage A f t e r numbering and l i s t i n g , the loose i n t e r l e a v e d m a t e r i a l was removed from the book and bundled separately. 2. Origin The c o l l e c t i o n appears to have been s t a r t e d by Thomas Crofton Croker (1798-1854)? who during the l a t e r period of h i s l i f e l i v e d with h i s f a m i l y at Rosamond's Bower, Parson's Green, Fulham, and at 3 Gloucester Road, Old Brompton. The o r i g i n a l i n t e n t i o n was probably to keep m a t e r i a l . r e l a t i n g to Croker's f r i e n d s the antiquary Thomas B a y l i s ( -187 ) of The pryor's Bank, and l a t e r Thames Bank, Fulham, and the w r i t e r and w i t Theodore Edward Hook (1788-I84.I) l a t t e r l y of Egmont V i l l a , Fulham. The words "Fulham The Pryor's Bank and Egmont V i l l a 1837-45' are embossed on the spine of the scrap book. However, from an e a r l y date, the c o l l e c t i o n expanded to include references to other l i t e r a r y or antiquarian contacts. Crofton Croker's son, T.F.Dillon Croker, probably continued to c o l l e c t s i m i l a r l e t t e r s w r i t t e n to him by h i s father's f r i e n d s , and to copy l e t t e r s e t c . w r i t t e n by h i s f a t h e r , B a y l i s , Hook and others i n t o the scrap book. Owing to the f a c t that D i l l o n Croker's handwriting i s almost i d e n t i c a l t o that of h i s father, i t i s d i f f i c u l t to determine the date or o r i g i n of some of the copied matter. L e t t e r s 27/20, 27/76 and 27/128 r e f e r s p e c i f i c a l l y to the a c q u i s i t i o n of c o l l e c t i o n s o f corres pondence e t c . by D i l l o n Croker. The c o l l e c t i o n as a whole covers a period from the 1820s to the 1870s. The j u x t a p o s i t i o n of items stuck i n the book i s of some s i g n i f i c a n c e , but the arrangement of loose m a t e r i a l seems to bear l i t t l e r e l a t i o n to i t s content except i n i s o l a t e d cases.
