Although it is the smallest of four National Parks in Montenegro, National Park Biogradska
Gora contains diversity of flora and fauna. Over 150 kinds of birds and 10 kinds of

years old, large mountain slopes and tops, and glacier lakes. Park is renowned as unique
geological - morphological region and as such is very attractive for scientific research.

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV), also known as a
quad, quad bike, is defined as a vehicle that
travels on low-pressure tires, with a seat that
is straddled by the operator, along with
handlebars for steering control. As the name

variety of terrain than most other vehicles.

Yet, there are other top-notch

cicvara (local dish made of
cream cheese, cheese made in
layers and specific types of
flour), sheep yogurt ...
It is a custom here (and it is also quite enjoyable to have it at the altitude of 1,000 meters
above sea level) to take a sip of local fruit brandy- rakija - before the meal. And there are also
priganice (Montenegrin doughnuts) and honey to welcome you.

Winter sports
Given that Montenegro’s very name is a
clue to its stunning, mountainous interior,
it’s perhaps surprising that the country
remains little known as a winter sports
destination – yet the skiing here is worldclass.
Snowmobiles do not require a specific road
or trail and this is their biggest advantage
and the most interesting feature. Snowmobile
ride is extremely attractive because it gives
you the chance to experience the areas that
would be unreachable without them.

Unusual winter activity
Make an igloo. An igloo or snowhouse
is a type of shelter built of snow,
originally built by the Inuit. You will get
the necessary tools but you need to find
the materials for yourself.
The snow used to build an igloo must have
enough structural strength to be cut and
stacked appropriately. The best snow to use
for this purpose is snow which has been
blown by wind, which can serve to compact
and interlock the ice crystals.

23 mountain tops
over 2300 meters
of altitude. Park is
39000 acres large
and includes 82
kilometers of the
river Tara canyon,

deepest in the
world.
Region of Durmitor is characterized by high mountain-tops, abundant forests and deep gorges.
Canyon of Tara is the largest in Europe and has over 1500 kinds of flora and 130 kinds of birds.

There are 18 glacier lakes in the Park, as well as the highest peak in
Montenegro - Bobotov kuk (2522m).
Since 1980 National Park Durmitor and Tara canyon are under protection of
UNESCO. In 1977 canyon was proclaimed world ecological reserve.

Diversity of flora and
fauna is very noticible,
with numerous endemic
and relict species. The
fauna is mostly
mountainous and high
mountain type. Of the
roughly 1,325 species of
plants, 122 are endemic,
150 medicinal, while
mushroom, 40 species of
edible. There are
numerous sites of cultural
heritage: the necropolis,
Greek and Roman
cemeteries, churches and
monasteries, tombstones,
as well as traditional
architecture (pastures,
savardaci, mills).

At above 1,500 metres
above sea level there
are 18 glacial lakes.
Local people call
them “mountain
eyes”. Among them
Black Lake is the
largest and the most
beautiful lake. It was
named “black”
because of the
reflection of tall
coniferous trees in
the lake surrounding
it. The entire amazing
landscape is
dominated by the
giant peak Međed
arising above the
lake.

NP Durmitor really has to offer a lot,
from easy hiking tour, over more
demanding all day trek tour, to adventure
rock climbing on the steep walls up to
700 meters till ski touring tours on
untouched snow yet!
Center of the park is Žabljak, small town
at the bottom of the southeastern part of
Durmitor. This settlement, which is
located at the highest altitude of the
Balkan Peninsula (around 1.450m) is the
biggest winter center in Montenegro,
with considerable accommodation
capacities, both hotel and private,
infrastructure for winter sports and
services in the area of tourism and
mountaineering. Mountaineering paths
are marked and there is an organized
mountain climbing guide service.

Winter Sport activities
On the mountains of Montenegro there
are groomed trails and great areas to
“sail” white open spaces. If you are
looking for trails with velvet snow, which
makes a special sound under your skis,
with no crowds, with the ideal position of
trees, then you are in the right place
In the past, snowshoes were essential tools for
fur traders, trappers, and anyone whose life or
living depended on the ability to get around in
areas of deep and frequent snowfall, and they
remain necessary equipment for forest rangers.
However, today snowshoes are mainly used for
recreation, primarily by hikers and runners who
like to continue their hobby in wintertime.

Rafting
In the National park zone, you can conquer
whirlpools, defiles, limans and spinning
wheels with rafts, kayaks and pneumatic
boats, carried by the mainstream of the river
Tara and guided by secure hands of rafters.
Discover the indescribable beauty of this area,
pass through the deepest canyon in Europe
and swim in perfectly clean water. River Tara
due to its clarity is known as “Tear of Europe”.

Tara banks are steep, covered with forest
arising from the coldness and depth of the
canyon.
At some points a torrential river becomes
calm and peaceful. Rare parts where you
can cross the river from one side to the
other are called “gazovi” (places where
you can step in and walk to the other part).
Today, the canyon attracts tourists
looking for adventure and a thrilling and
direct contact with nature.
Rafting is an adrenalin sport, a
combination of adventure and relaxation.

Rafting down almost the entire course
of the river Tara will make your
adrenaline blow out. Apart from rafting
on a rubber boat rafting on a wood raft
is also possible.
Wood raft is made of wood logs and they
are run by particularly brave and handy
people.
Once, this was a major mean of
transportation of wood.

Canyoning
Canyon Nevidio is the place where
millions of years ago the mountains of
Durmitor and Vojnik crashed into each
other. The river Komarnica had cut this
canyon deep in the severe rock long
time ago
This is the last conquered canyon in Europe. The
name Nevidio (Never Seen) or Nevidbog (Never
Seen by God) speaks for itself - it is hardly
accessible.

For this adventure you need full climbing
equipment including diving suits. On the way
through the three and a half km long canyon you
will come across waterfalls, straits, cascades,
white water, narrow channels and a whole gallery
of nature-made sculptures. The hardest challenge
is the so-called Gate of Kamikazes – section about
80m long and in some parts only 25cm wide.
