Why Perform Self-Advocacy?
Once more, Why Self-Advocacy?
◦
◦
◦
◦
◦
◦
Help others who follow us
Reduce self-doubts about our hearing needs
Overcome fear and silence among ourselves
No whining zone
No complaining
Do it to help
 Ourselves or
 Those coming after us
 I cringe when I get publicity but would prefer to help anonymously
and watch the benefits occur after me
◦ After a couple years of complaining and whining, it’s tedious
to re-hash
◦ Misery loves miserable company: I don’t. Many of us don’t
either. Time to go and fix it!
◦ Let’s fix it

Our rewards occur when folks use the captions, neck
loops or loops and complain to fix those.

Thank the people providing the accommodations
Thank them again later
Bring new patrons and ask others to go!
Publicize this via the media – news, internet and social
media tools…..
◦ Don’t be clueless-use people skills, self-awareness
◦ Don’t let the HLA chapters say their spread too thin or
too busy (especially after they ask you to help get the
accommodation)
◦
◦
◦
◦
◦ Use USPS aka, snail mail too
◦ Ask other HLA members to please write thank you
notes.
◦ When HLAer asks for thank you notes, please write
them!
◦ This is really important to help with future advocacy
efforts and build a positive reputation
◦ We must always avoid the “entitlement” and “angry”
responses (even if we are right)
◦ Remember: be graceful,
with humility and manners.
◦ That helps us.
◦ Remember this is not a game
and not a reason to gloat
◦ Entitlement attitude hurts us

◦Please be
gracious
