Nine staff pros and twelve counselors have ensured the enjoyment and safety of hundreds of children since June 16th. Here is a list of fun facts about the most popular recreational junior tennis camp in all of OC. 1) A record 101 campers attended every day the week of July 14th. This was the most attended week since Swing N’ Splash began in 2006! 2) An estimated 50,000 tennis balls will have been struck by campers through the end of July. 3) Over 2,500 lunches have been served so far! 4) Eight hats, six visors, and five racquets have been found by staff since camp began on June 16th. These items & more still remain in our Lost & Found! 5) Value increases, as camp enrollment numbers are lower in the month of August! Days: Monday - Thursday Time: 5:00 - 7:00 pm Description: The fall season brings change to the Ripper Tennis Academy, which will now be called the Ripper Tournament Training Academy. The goal of the RTTA is to encourage and prepare all students for success in USTA sanctioned events. A low 4:1 student-to-coach ratio will be implemented for the 13-week session, giving immense value to each student. Three USTA Novice, Satellite, and Open tournaments will be associated with the fall session, which we encourage all attendees to play. The low student-to-instructor ratio allows coaches to work more closely with each Ripper and better prepare them for competitive match play. We welcome Spring and Summer Academy students, past Rippers, and new juniors to this program! We strongly recommend a minimum twice-a-week enrollment for those dedicated to improvement and performance. Pricing includes Sunday Grand Prix from 1:00 -3:00 pm. 3. I’m delighted to share a little about Shaya this month! Attending an astounding 9 weeks of Swing N’ Splash Camp this year, Maddie’s Nike pink and gray tennis shoes have been making a fashion statement all summer long. Born long ago in 2008, she has been playing tennis for about 2 years now and is doing everything right to become a great tennis player. Her favorite thing about tennis? “Hitting the ball!” Off the court, Maddie loves reading, going to the park, listening to her favorite song, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and devouring a hot dog every now and then. Some of her most memorable Grip N’ Rip tennis moments include crushing forehands, cannon-balling into the pool, and watching as her team finishes in first place. I asked her what about her favorite coach, Olimar, makes her experience here so great, and Maddie replied, “She has pretty hair.” Hear what the coaches have to say: “Maddie is sweet, fun and really loves tennis. She has that quiet, competitive nature that makes it fun for me to work with her. Maddie is awesome!” - Lille Krukrubo “Maddie is a great, intelligent kid. She really listens and applies what the coaches ask her to do. With her commitment and hard work, she’ll be on the tournament circuit in no time.” - John-Michael Shaya started with us at 4 years old in our Swing N’ Splash Tennis Camp. “I was obsessed with going to the pool and hanging with my first coach, Nicki Klein. I loved camp,” Shaya recalls. Contemplating her 9 years of tennis with our program, Shaya remarks, “The Newport Beach Tennis Club is my second home, and the Grip N’ Rip staff is family.” We sure are proud of her! Every year she becomes more focused and dedicated, to the point that she is now an open level junior player, training every day this summer, recently spending two weeks at the Pepperdine Nike Tennis Camp. Her end-goal of playing tennis at the high school and college level is in sight! Her R&R consists of playing with her dogs, watching movies, eating sushi, and an annual trip to Kaanapali, Maui, which I thought might be a dessert, but is actually a city. Shaya recalls a particularly funny Grip N’ Rip memory: “Rocky (a past Ripper) and I used to jump the fence onto court 17. We did it especially when you (John-Michael) weren’t around. One day, Coach George saw us coming and yelled out, ‘Don’t hop!’ Being great listeners, we did it anyway. As I lept over, my skirt got snagged, and I ended up hanging off the fence. He had to unhook me. It was so embarrassing!” When asked to share some advice for future Grippers and Rippers, she said, “I’d tell them to always make the best of the time on court. It goes by fast. If you’re aren’t getting better when you’re out there, what’s the point?” Hear what the coaches have to say: “It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Shaya grow and turn into a beautiful player. Shaya is like our little sister and has become an ideal role model for our other players.” - Lille Krukrubo “Shaya is the perfect representative of what our program is striving to produce. A well-balanced, competitive tennis player, who loves to push herself on and off the court. I hope other students look to follow her example. - John Michael TOURNAMENT TIPS WITH COACH GEORGE! Get out there and enter as many tournaments as your schedule will allow you to. Playing tournaments is not only good for your tennis game, but it’s also fun! Before you leave for your match, there are a few things you might want to bring with you in your tennis bag. 1. Spare tennis racquet - In case one breaks. 2. Water - You can never be too hydrated! 3. Sunscreen - Protect yourself against the rays. Copyright © 2014 Kay Tanaka. All rights reserved. 4. Snacks - Fruits, energy bars, or sandwiches on long days. 5. Change of clothes - Especially if you sweat a lot. 6. Extra overgrips - Should your grip get slippery. 7. Towel - To wipe away sweat. 8. Notes - A quick review on changover. 9. A GREAT ATTITUDE! Now you’re ready to GRIP N’ RIP! StockInDesign Inc. 7 PHOTOGALLERY A special thank you to Mike Hamrock & Carolyn Stephens for their photo contribution(s) to Grip N’ Report. Tournament Table George Tate In recent tournament news… Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, sings “The Way You Make Me Feel,” which is Coach Sunil’s soundtrack. Pharrell Williams makes Coach Jann smile brightly with his song, “Happy!” Get To Know This month, we asked the Grip N’ Rip staff: What ONE song is the soundtrack to your life? John-Michael Chamakoon: “Life Is Wonderful” by Jason Mraz. Why is it the soundtrack to my life? Because it’s very quirky, and I love life. “It takes an egg to make a hen. It takes a hen to make an egg. There’s no end to what I’m saying. “ Those lyrics are genius. The song is full of statements describing the glory in the mundane. I think finding the beauty and joy in the simplest things is the goal of life. Life is pretty wonderful. Jann Dunlap: “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. What an adventure and awesome job we have to simply love one another! When I have done this well, I am happy! Andrea Gonzalez: “Everything Is Awesome” by Tegan & Sara. It’s from the Lego Movie, and it best describes my life right now! I have a great son, a great job, and great friends. I love to wake up every day with a big smile on my face, knowing that everything is awesome! Craig Johnson: “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, which is my all-time favorite band. Every time I played in a tough match, I sang that song in my head, and it propelled me to victory! This is a great song for every competitor caught in a challenging match. Lille Krukrubo: “Try Again” by Aaliyah. “If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off, and try again. You can dust it off, and try again!” Sunil Sipaeya: “The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson, the King of Pop! Kay Tanaka: “Take It To The Limit” by The Eagles. I used to listen to this song with my dad when I was maybe 3 or 4 years old, and it has a special place in my heart because of that. I remember telling him to play it over and over again. As I’ve grown, my understanding of this song has grown, as well. It’s true that, “I’ve always been a dreamer.” George Tate: “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra! Not only did I get older in the past month, but some of our Rippers also aged like a fine wine! To start the month off, Luke Johnson took home his first Satellite Boys 10’s title in Anaheim. Jane Paulsen also competed, before retiring in the quarterfinals. Jeff Marcopolis fought his way to the quarters in the South Bay Jr. Satellite in Torrance, while Nicholas Guildenhuys heated up the Boys 14’s, unfortunately, coming up one game short of advancing to the finals, both at La Habra and the Woodbridge Jr. Novice. The Tennis Club Jr. Novice saw Jack Cross, Joshua Fox, Kimi Reddy, and Katie Stephens all showing improved play after a week at SRTTA. Kimi Reddy and Katie Stephens (pictured right) both walked away with some hardware in the Girls 12’s and Girls 14’s, respectively. Way to go girls! Satellites are waiting. Down in San Clemente, Poppy Promprasert lost a close battle in the finals of the Girls 14’s. Also making appearances this month were Thomas Stobart, Kori Griscom, Arden Stobart, Mika Ikemori, and Nicole Knickerbocker. Keep up the stellar work on the court, and stay focused, kids!
