CHICAGO REGION NEWS PUBLISHED MONTHLY BY THE CHICAGO REGION BMW OWNERS ASSOCIATION • FOUNDED IN 1969 AS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION www.crbmw.COM DECEMBER 2011 We’re Ready for 2012 Time for Holidays 2011 By Christy Lange We held elections at the November meeting, and these are the officers and directors selected by our members for 2012. Please note the two positions not yet filled. I could see you, dear member, in either one of these positions. These jobs are intersting and fun, they’re crucial to the club, and they make only a modest dent in your free time. Talk to me or any board member for a description of duties, responsibilities...and rewards. Come and enjoy our annual holiday dinner and celebration at the December club meeting on Thursday, Dec. 8. The location is our regular meeting place, the Elmhurst Reindeer Club...no wait, that’s not right..the Elmhurst Elks Club, 711 W. St. Charles Rd., (about a half-mile west of Rt. 83). The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and serving dinner starts at 7:15 p.m. The Elks Club bar will be open as usual. We will have a delicious catered dinner for you and your spouse or significant other, so you won’t want to miss it. There’s no cost to members and $7.00 per person for non-members. All in all, this is a great time to be with old friends and make new ones.We accept any offers to bring in dessert treats, as we love your bakin’. Wear your favorite Santa hat, goofy holiday vest or moth ridden holiday sweater. A favor please: Come early and help set up tables and serve meals. Stay a little late to help clean up. No charge for members. Non-members are welcome to attend, too, at a cost of $7.00 per person. By Hank Barta, president • President.................................Hank Barta • Recording Secretary...............still open • Treasurer.................................Ingrid Wessel • Activities Director..................Michael Silverman • Newsletter Editor....................David Papadopoulos • Consumer Interest Officer......Ty Plaza • Membership Director.............Christy Lange • Directors (starting their two year terms) ................................................Scott Hellem ................................................Jonny Volk • Directors (mid way through their two year terms) ................................................Steve Jeffries ................................................still open I would like to thank the retiring members of our board: Director – Art Laschober headed up our welcoming committee, working with many members both seasoned and new to help them to integrate into the club. Director – Jerry Sjostrom has served as Director and 11 years as President before that. I’m pretty sure that he had a board position prior to President but that goes far beyond my experience with the club. This will be the first time in years that Jerry does not hold a board position but I hope that he will remain active and find the time to help out now and then. Membership Director – Mike Peterson worked diligently to get our membership database sorted out and then continued to improve the quality of the data as time went on. I hope we can continue that improvement into the future. Newsletter Editor – Joe Sjostrom was tireless in producing this monthly publication and cajoling our members for pictures and articles. If there was insufficient material forthcoming, he would dig a little deeper or write something himself. The newsletter is something enjoyed by continued on page 2 Officers for 2012, (standing left to right) president Hank Barta, newsletter editor David Papadopoulos, membership director Christy Lange, board member Jonny Volk, retiring board member Jerry Sjostrom, board member Steve Jeffries, retiring board member and welcoming committee chairman Art Laschober; (front row) consumer affairs director Ty Plaza, activities director Michael Silverman, treasurer Ingrid Wessel. Not shown is newly elected board member Scott Hellem. Photo by John Zolot Ready for 2012 continued every single member of the club and I am sure they appreciate Joe’s efforts and results. Recording Secretary – Tim Colburn has faithfully served officially as secretary and unofficially as our voice of sensibility and recaller of club history. Tim’s contributions are always welcome. New directors: Activities Director – Michael Silverman has relinquished his position as Director so he can assume responsibilities as Activities Director. He is not new to the board but he is new to this position and I am certain he will appreciate the support from our members when it comes to planning and holding activities. Consumer Interest Director – Ty Plaza has stepped up to serve our membership by keeping them appraised of all the latest in the world of BMW motorcycles and related accessories and gear. Director – Jonny Volk has given up his role as Consumer Interest Director so he can address safety issues. He has chosen to focus on that as Director. Director – Scott Hellem has attended board meetings and helped out with a number of activities and will now be serving a two year term as Director. He will assume responsibilities for chairing the Welcoming Committee. If you would like to reach out to new members and help them integrate into our membership, please contact Scott. Newsletter Editor – David Papadopoulos will be carrying on as the editor of our print publication. As with Joe I suspect that he will be looking for articles and pictures to share with the rest of our members. Still Open… We have two positions that remain open: Recording Secretary and Director. You still have an opportunity to step up your contributions to our club and serve. Please speak to any officer if you have an interest. Upcoming Events We will hold our holiday celebration at the December club meeting. Please see the other article in the newsletter for further details. We hope to see you all there! We will again have a booth at the International Motorcycle Show. (February 10-12) Every year we strive to assemble a booth that tells the public something about our club while being genuinely interesting to the casual show attendee. What do you think would be a good theme? We’d like to hear your ideas so don’t hesitate to share them with any board member or even come to a board meeting to put your ideas forth. As we get closer to the show we will also be looking for volunteers to help out. It takes a bit of work to put this on but many hands make for light work (and we have fun doing it.) In January we will need to get the ball rolling for activities. Do you have any ideas for something to add to our calendar? If so please let our new Activities Director (Michael Silverman) know. I’m sure he wants to hear from you. Likewise if you have discovered a new place to suggest for a hot dog night. Just remember the requirements: parking, bathrooms and they do need to be open on Monday evenings. Michael intends to hold an activities planning session early next year and the tentative date is Saturday, January 14. See you at the party, Hank Barta Member from Club’s Early Years Passes We regret to announce that Hans Bonhart, a long-time Chicago Region member, passed away on Nov. 8. Hans was born in Germany and came to Chicago in 1953. He joined our Chicago Region BMW Owners Association and the national BMW Motorcycle Owners Association in 1974. Hans, who sported a jaunty handlebar moustache in his younger years, and his wife Lu were active participants in BMW rides and rallies for many years. The traveled on their BMW sidecar rig, attending both Chicago area events and BMW rallies across the country. Hans was a mechanic and operated the Peoples Garage, a Volkswagen repair shop in Chicago Heights. He was a naturalized American citizen and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Hans was also an early active member of our CHITECH committee and hosted several clinics at his shop. Hans’ interest and talents also included traditional jazz music, painting, woodworking, art glass, and being a household handyman, he especially found enjoyment at his lake cottage fishing and spending time with his family. Hans’ wife Lu passed away in 2005. A memorial service was held in November at St. Mark United Church of Christ, in Chicago Heights.
