Bass Coast Shire Council acknowledges Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islanders as the first Australians and
recognises that they have a unique relationship with
the land and water.
Council also recognises that we are situated on the
traditional lands of the Boon Wurrung /Bunurong,
of the Kulin Nation who have lived here for thousands
of years. We offer our respect to their elders past and
present and, through them, all Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people.
Bass Coast is home to a thriving arts community.
The beauty of its natural environment, and the close
proximity to Melbourne attracts the creative spirit.

This program offers an award to exhibit in the Bass
Coast YAC exhibition in September each year.
At this exhibition, one painting is selected by an
independent judging panel to become part of
Council’s art collection.
The prize is worth $5,000 and all artists invited to
exhibit will also receive $1,000.

Shearwater Festival
The Shearwater Festival is a cultural, creative and
environmental event which brings communities
together to celebrate the return of the Shearwaters
from their migration.
The Festival includes a street parade, workshops,
performances, guided walks and talks to the
Shearwater rookeries, an education program and an
international message exchange between children,
artists and Indigenous Elders.
Held in November each year on Phillip Island.

for a variety of activities. From professional
theatres to small meeting rooms; workshop/
wet areas to space for art exhibition; convention
space to celebrations and functions; dance to
taekwondo or meetings and theatre in the round
– whatever your needs, there is a space for you.
36 Cowes Cultural Centre
The Cultural Centre offers facilities for the
public including:
•Meeting Room 1 (seats up to 40), includes tea/
coffee facilities, whiteboard, tables, chairs,
TV/DVD projector
•Meeting Room 2 (seats up to 20), includes tea/
coffee facilities, whiteboard, tables and chairs
•Cultural Centre Hall (seats up to 250), includes
tables, chairs, dressing room, stage, lighting,
sound and a piano
•Kitchen caters to professional style catering up
to 250 people
•Heritage Centre Meeting Room (seats up to 60),
includes whiteboard, table, chairs, projection
screen and kitchenette
37 Inverloch Community Hub

The Inverloch Community Hub offers facilities to
the public including:
•Meeting room with small kitchenette, includes
tea/coffee facilities, whiteboard, table and chairs
(seats up to 40 in forum style set up)
•Community Hall (including kitchen and stage,
seats up to 280 for a dinner/dance function,
AV equipment and a screen)

The Arts Centre offers facilities to the public
including:
•Theatre/Auditorium is fully raked seating up to 418
with access seating for wheelchairs and mobility
scooter. Theatre includes proscenium arch stage,
orchestra pit, lighting, sound, piano, two dressing
rooms and a scenery dock
• Foyer designed for exhibitions
•Meeting Room seats up to 20 people
with kitchenette
•Separate entrances to theatre/auditorium/foyer
and meeting room

Kerry Spokes won first prize at the Bass Coast
YAC Exhibition with her graphite drawing Mist.
This artwork is now part of Council’s art collection.
“I have always seen my artistic practice as in a
‘state of motion’ where I am always looking for new
mediums to express myself creatively. The use of
digital collage and iphoneography has been such
an exploration in the last few years for me.
“My true passion however, will always be drawing
and printmaking and is what I return to for that
true immersion into the creative process”.
