YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY CONNECTION
New Beginnings
by Jennifer Stetson
An interview with new County Librarian Jessica Hudson
"
This past January Caryn Brown, our County
Librarian, retired and we welcomed a new County
Librarian, Jessica Hudson. Caryn is still quite
involved, attending both the Tehama County and
Corning Friends of the Library meetings, and Jessica
has thrown herself fully into her new job, creating
new programs and planning for even more! For the
inaugural issue of our READINGS newsletter, I
wanted to interview Jessica and introduce her to
you, our library’s friends and family.

Q.!Will you tell us a bit about yourself ?
Thurs., May 19 @ 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm
I have been married to my husband Steven for five
years now. We have three cats; Angie, April and
Amigo, but no children…yet! One set of my
grandparents lives close by in Redding, while the
rest of my immediate family lives in Solano County.
I grew up in Fairfield and got my first library job with the Solano County Library system,
shelving books and helping patrons from the floor. I attended Solano Community College
before moving to Sacramento to work on my BS in Finance and work for Placer County
Library managing the Applegate and Meadow Vista branches. I completed my MLIS from
San Jose State while living in Sacramento as well. I earned my BS in 2008 and my MLIS in
2010.
Q.!What attracted you to the this job in Tehama County? Why did you apply
for this job?
I was particularly interested in working in Tehama County because I enjoy more rural
populations. My prior positions in Applegate and Meadow Vista were both smaller
communities with populations of approximately 2,000 and 5,000 respectively. I like
becoming part of a close knit community where I know the library’s efforts have the
possibility of reaching every person.
Q.!What is your primary goal for your first year in Tehama County and how can
the Friends of the Library help you achieve that goal?
I have many goals for 2011, not just one! My first goal is to replace portions of the library’s
print collection. By removing older titles and purchasing new ones on similar subjects, we

connected to all the activity here at the library. The Friends of the Library exists to promote
our library in every way. Whether by purchasing new library materials and equipment,
receiving donations for the library, or just spreading the word, we’re here to support learning

Library Talk
by Jessica Hudson, County Librarian
What’s happening in the Tehama County Library System
The Tehama County Library has always been a beloved place to our
community; a gathering place, a learning place, and a place to enjoy
the printed word. The Library has many upcoming and ongoing
changes in the works, all of them designed to make the library an
even better place to be. We hope that you will come into the Red
Bluff, Corning, or Los Molinos libraries to see all the new and
interesting programs and projects that we have going on!
•
The library is updating its website at
www.tehamacountylibrary.org. We have a new front page, a new
banner across the top of every page, changes to all of the side
tabs and several newly created areas including a separate Teen
section, a Purchase Request form, and an Events Calendar.
•
We are now starting to catalog all the library’s paperback
items. Starting with the adult books in the Red Bluff branch, you
can now search for paperbacks in the catalog in addition to just
browsing the shelves to see what we have in.
•
Both the Red Bluff branch and the Corning branch now have
Adult Book Clubs! Red Bluff meets on the third Tuesday of
the month from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the Community Room of
the library. Corning meets on the last Tuesday of the month
from 12:30 to 1:30 PM in the main space of the library. The
library purchases each of the chosen books in advance so you
should always be able to come in and pick up a copy!
•
•
Red Bluff - May: The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt
Kid, by Bill Bryson
•
Corning - May: Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen
The Red Bluff library now has a collection of board games to
check out. From Yahtzee to Twilight the Board Game, family
night can now be both fun and free!
Checking out a book, one of Jessica’s favorite things to do!
•
The Library is also in the planning process for a new series of
computer classes. If you or anyone you know is interested in
learning computer basics, how to maneuver the library’s website
and catalog, or more advanced skills, please leave your name and
phone number with staff and we’ll put you on the waiting list.
Classes are scheduled to start in September.
•
The Library is hosting an Author Visit by children’s sports
biographer Jeff Savage. He will be visiting the Red Bluff branch
on May 19th at 12:30. Bring your children, your friends, and your
best expectations, as Mr. Savage is a wonderful and engaging
storyteller as well.
•
Scrapbooking is making a comeback for teens and adults. Bimonthly starting in June, the library will have the space and
supplies out and ready to create your perfect new scrapbook. All
we ask is that you bring your own pictures (and a few extra
special supplies if you’d like). The first session will be on
Saturday June 11th from 10-2.
We know you’ll love all of the library’s activities and services; come
on in and check them out!

Children’s Programming
by Sally Ainsworth, Children’s Librarian
An update on Tehama County Children’s Programing
It’s Summertime and that means its time for the
Tehama County Libraries
Summer Reading Program!
This summer we challenge you to exercise your brain at our FREE sportsthemed program.
We will be having crafts, special guests, contests and lots of stories. As it is a
sports theme we will be celebrating our World Champion San Francisco Giants
with a “Giants” Day and we will also have a library Olympics with games and
prizes. The summer fun will include sports bingo, a book swap, and several athome contests for the kids to do at home and bring to the library. We will
display them for the summer in the library as part of our decorations. The kids will keep track of the books that they read over the summer and will
be rewarded with pizza certificates and ice cream cones. The last week of the
program will include a book give away and lots of special treats. The kids that
have read the most books will also be honored on that day.
The program is held in all three of the Tehama County library branches and the
dates are as follows:
Los Molinos = Mondays at 10:00, June 20 - August 1. (The 4th of July
holiday falls on a Monday so the last Los Molinos program moves to August
1st.)
Corning = Tuesdays at 10:00, June 21 - July 26.
Miss Sally, Children’s Librarian
So “Hit the books” with us this summer and exercise your
brain.

From Corning
by Judy Turner, President, Corning Friends of the Library
An update from the Corning Friends of the Library
The Corning Friends of the Library was
officially organized in 1991. The purpose was
and still is to support the library by purchasing
needed items and volunteering in the library.
Our Book Sale in March was a great success, netting us
over $700 including donations. We work hard on these,
and couldn’t do them without the help of Corning 4-H
students and their families.
We currently have a membership of over 30
people, with an average of about sixteen at
our monthly meetings. Most of our members
work on our projects. We have a very active
group!
2011 has been busy for us. In February we
hosted Corning in the Morning. Over 30
community people attended, enjoying a
continental breakfast and learning about
new features in the library.

NEW BEGINNINGS
Continued
will refresh the collection and have accurate
and interesting items for every person. My
second goal is to increase the programming
that the library offers. We have already
started this by adding adult book clubs in
both Red Bluff and Corning. Over the rest of
the year, it is my mission to see that we start
basic computer classes in the main branch,
offer expanded children’s programming, and
re-start the teen advisory board to help
advise on teen programming. My third goal
for this year would be to start reaching out
into the community to let everyone know
about the wonderful materials, services, and
programs that we offer through our expert
and enthusiastic staff. As you can see, there
are just too many wonderful things going on
to pick only one! Q.!What made you decide on a career
in libraries? Why did you become a
librarian?
I started my first library job at the age of 15
and knew it was the right path for me. My
neighbor across the street worked in the IT
department of my local branch and
suggested I apply for a position, as he knew
of my passion for reading and reader’s
advisory. To be a librarian takes more than
just a love of the printed word though; you
also have to enjoy working with the public.
As someone who enjoys talking and helping
people, along with my love of books, I knew
I was going in the right direction from the
beginning. Q.!What other jobs have you had and
how have they helped you prepare for
this job?
I have only ever worked in libraries, which
gives me just at ten years of experience at
this point. All of my previous positions have
grown me into the County Librarian for
Tehama County. Starting at the bottom of
the library totem pole and working my way
up have given me the insight into every level
of library service that you need to be an
effective administrator.
Q.!What's your favorite part of being a
librarian?
The people! Staff, volunteers, patrons,
members of the public, members of our local
government. I love working with a wide
range of people who are steering the library
toward a path of better and brighter things.
