It is not difficult to imagine that Peter had been going through an emotional wringer. He was out in his boat fishing when Jesus appeared on the shore. In his excitement, he jumped headlong into the sea. Now, on the shore, he is having breakfast with the Lord he had doubted, the Lord he had contradicted, the Lord he had closed his eyes to in a time of great crisis, the Lord he had abandoned, the Lord he had denied. Surely Peter was experiencing immense joy, but also a deep sense of mortification and embarrassment in the presence of the Risen Lord he had so often failed. Surely Peter was experiencing immense joy, but also a deep sense of mortification and embarrassment in the presence of the Risen Lord he had so often failed. Jesus, on the other hand, had but one thing on his mind. He didn’t ask Peter for explanations. He didn’t ask Peter to tell Him he was sorry. He didn’t lecture Peter on the virtue of faith or the evil of cowardice. He didn’t remind Peter, “I told you so!” He just asked him one simple question, “Do you love Me?” And Peter replied, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” Jesus, on the other hand, had but one thing on his mind. He encourages us to get up and try again. If we have made a mess of our life, God wants us to get it right. If we have strayed, God wants us back. If we are at odds with one another, God wants us to be reconciled. Slips don’t count as long as we keep on trying to give love a chance, until the day of glory when we do finally get it all right.
