Two Milford proposals, and two refusals from Central Government. No surprises
in the case of the tunnel through the Routeburn last year because that didn’t sound
like a fun trip and the environmental impact was huge. However in the case of the
Monorail, that did sound like fun, a lot of fun actually, and I’m not convinced the
environmental impact was significant enough to stop the project.
But at the end of the day it was a financial decision not the welfare of a few native
bats. The argument is whether any private enterprise will give us enough confidence
to give the green light to plough a route into Fiordland National Park. In this latest
refusal by Conservation Minister Nick Smith, I got the feeling his reasons for
declining were not so much the impact a successful Monorail would have, but rather
the effect an unsuccessful Monorail would have. And the cost to the tax payer if it
was charged with removing a pink elephant from a World Heritage Area. Sometimes,
in fact most of the time, it is easier to choose the safe option and say no.
In my opinion, that fear on the part of the Government is a clear indication to private
enterprise that there is very little hope of cutting a new path through Fiordland
National Park to Milford. Where does this leave us now and what kind of message is
being sent to visionary thinkers who in the past have built such things as the Skyline
Gondola up the side of Bob’s Peak, Coronet Peak Ski Area, and ironically the only
existing route into Milford Sound? In the modern world of environmental politics
would the Skyline Gondola have been allowed or considered an eyesore, Coronet
Peak refused for damaging native grasses and the Milford Road now considered one
of the most photographic drives in the world, absolutely not.

Will our generation ever see seriously ambitious engineering projects undertaken or
are all the great feats of human endeavour in this part of the world done and dusted?
What the Government need to understand is that it was once their responsibility to
undertake such projects. It was a nutter/genius from the Ministry of Works who stood
in front of the Darren Mountain Range and said, boys grab your shovels, we are
digging right through that son of a gun. And now we drive through the Homer Tunnel.
Imagine if that never happened. Arguably our greatest tourism attraction would be
accessible by only a few privileged people in boats or aeroplanes.
Maybe the Monorail to Milford proposal was another Routeburn Tunnel, and the right
decision has been made putting the fantasy to bed. But now I am left a little empty
because I want to live in a world where game changing innovation can still happen.
And when I watch the news and see Te Anau residents clinking glasses filled with
bubbly wine I wonder why are they celebrating. So they can continue to be the fifteen
minute “Gateway to Milford” bus stop town. Just enough time for a pee and pie. What
kind of future are those people aspiring to?

Paid Parental Problems
I am sick of hearing comments from well-todo rich folk that parents shouldn’t receive any
Paid Parental Leave and shouldn’t have kids if
they can’t afford them. I find these comments
extremely unfair. In this day and age, when
cost of housing and other living costs are
so expensive, it is unrealistic to expect that
anyone within the child bearing age of 2035 on an average income to have sufficient
money saved away to cover unpaid maternity
leave in addition to ongoing cost of raising
children - particularly if they live in an area

pregnancy. Sure, people earning huge bucks
like John Key can easily afford to live off
one wage and cover costs of maternity leave
whilst raising numerous children. But it is not
fair to say that because you don’t have a high
paying job that you shouldn’t have children.
Particularly when you work hard and pay your
taxes like everyone else. I don’t think a few
months PPL is too much to ask.

This is not a Whinge but a thank you I want
to send out to the lovely gentleman from
Luggate who stopped to help us near Wye
creek on Sunday evening.
We were unfortunate to hit a huge rock on
the road as we were travelling to Kingston.
It had basically destroyed our car but he was
kind enough to stop and help us out by first
going to remove any more rocks so nobody
else had the same mishap and them coming
to our aid. He helped us find a spot further
up the road to safely stop and change over to
the spare tyre. He also helped us change the
tyre even though he was clearly in pain kneeling
down to do so. We really appreciate the
kindness of strangers to help us on our way. We
made it safely home but our car is sadly “dead”.
Also thank you to those people who stopped
while we were changing the tyre to make sure
we were ok.

Vehicle Groomer:
Responsible for the preparation of the rental fleet for hire. Responsibilities
include cleaning the vehicles to an impeccable standard; performing basic
mechanical checks; installing ski-rack equipment and helping organise the
routine maintenance of vehicles as required. You will also need to be prepared
to help customers with queries about the vehicles and relocate vehicles as

Mechanical Assistant:

The Central Otago Premier Rugby competition took a week off last week for
representative rugby and congratulations to Arrowtown players Loz Wadham,
John Morrison and Christian Jones who made the Central Otago Team and
played for the Topp Cup on Saturday. After putting up a good fight, Central
eventually went down to Southern Country 31-22. A special mention also
to Shane McGuiness and Malcolm Sutherland who both made the Central
development team.
This week it’s back to club rugby and a top of the table clash between
Arrowtown and the Maniototo Maggots in Ranfurly. A trip to the Maniototo
is always a tough challenge for the team and if you want to come support
