It’s only the beginning of June and Coronet Peak is open. That is a miracle
of modern snowmaking technology. Despite the heavy snowfall a few weeks ago,
generally there is very little help from Mother Nature in our part of the world. Even at the
best of times, natural snow cover does not make a long and successful season. That’s
the reality of the snow industry in the Southern Hemisphere. Yet here we go, it’s time to
launch into winter.
Queenstown may be a popular holiday destination year round, but the “resort” tag
comes from our winter playground reputation. That reputation relies on snow obviously,
and a question worth asking is where will the snow line be in 20, 40 or 50 years’ time?
Global warming, manmade or just part of natural climate change is going to make an
impression on that snow line. And that will require snowmaking technology to keep
evolving if places like Queenstown are to have any hope at all of having a viable snow
industry in the future.
I remember some very short and lean ski seasons pre snowmaking. And when
snowmaking did begin on Coronet Peak, the artificial stuff was like skiing on little
plastic granules. Now, you can hardly tell the difference. But no snow lasts long at
temperatures above zero degrees, and the curse of Coronet is that the warm Norwest
rains quickly washes it all away.
The weather and snow conditions are always a popular talking point in Queenstown.
But most of our concerns are short term. I can understand that attitude for an Aussie
family on a week’s ski holiday. Their time here is limited. And the English backpacker
here for one ski season. This is it for them, one chance at creating the best possible
memory. However for long term residents and business people, the weather patterns
and how they are changing long term in the Southern Lakes is worth serious
contemplation.
Darlings of NZ music, Anika Moa, Boh Runga & Hollie Smith
about to hit the stage at the annual QT Lakes Family Centre
Charity Dinner held at Stoneridge Estate on Saturday night.

Winter Festival in its 40 years would have seen some change in weather patterns.
Certainly the dates of the festival have changed. 15 years ago it started in mid-July, now
we are getting the season launch party underway almost a full month earlier. That has
more to do with advanced snowmaking technology and commercial need rather than
climate change.
However climate change is a pressing topic for a town like Queenstown, whose resort
reputation hangs by a snow flake. So much so, that the debate has even made it
onto the Winter Festival calendar of events. On Monday 23rd June a panel of experts
debate the topic of snowlines, snowfall and the possible effects on Queenstown’s snow
industry. Tickets to ‘Queenstown 2040’ are available at www.winterfestival.co.nz. As
I look out my window at the smallest pinch of rain affected snow at the very top of the
surrounding mountains and no ground frost on the lawn I wonder if we are already
trying to make something out of nothing opening the mountains up now and holding
Winter festival next week. What will be the state of affairs in Queenstown 2040? Good
question.

ASK ME
Drive carefully
This is not so much a whinge but more a safety
concern for the drivers on our roads! With so
much media currently surrounding the lack of
experience and knowledge on our roads from
tourist drivers, it comes as a surprise when I see so
many kiwi drivers not leading by example and not
willing to adhere to the road rules and basic safety
features of their vehicles. The foggy conditions we
faced this week travelling to work were a prime
example. I witnessed on each morning more
than one vehicle travelling without any lights on,
a basic safety feature that I thought would be a
no brainer to operate! It takes no more than a
little common sense to know that when driving
in such conditions that having your headlights on
is a must! This just isn’t a feature on your car for
you to see ahead of you, but for other drivers on
the roads to see you coming. All the vehicles I
saw this week without headlights on were dark in
colour and I didn’t see them until they were right
on top of me. Maybe we should be taking a look
at ourselves as drivers before we criticise others,
as John Key mentioned last week the number
of tourist drivers causing accidents on our roads
is similar to the number caused by kiwi drivers.
As they say, people who live in glass houses
shouldn’t throw stones!”
Kate
Road improvement
I am pleased to see they are about to improve the
Glenda Drive intersection. This is long overdue.
However just a bit further down the road is an
equally dangerous intersection. The entry to
and exit from the Events Centre is a nightmare
especially for anyone trying to turn right towards
Lake Hayes. This is even more dangerous around
5pm when it is just turning dark and the numbers
of cars are at rush hour proportions. You have
to edge out looking quickly both left and right
and with all the lights glaring at you from both
sides it is a frightening experience. What they
should consider is either banning right hand
turns and making people go through the Frankton
roundabout, or installing another round-about
at this intersection. It is simply too dangerous
especially when most of the cars going to and
from the Events Centre contain young children.
Something needs to be done about this as sooner
or later an accident will happen.

Editorial
Pity the fools who rain down negativity on
every good idea. The fear though is not the
financial success or failure of the Monorail
but more the precedent it may set. Opening
the flood gates of applicants wanting the same
access to our national parks. I bet you a huge
lump of pounamu the Maori will have some
clause in their treaty settlement allowing them
to match such access should it be granted to
anyone else. That is fact not fiction.

Airport Antics
The other week I was at the Queenstown Airport
waiting to get on a flight to Auckland. It was a
busy Saturday and with a bit of time to kill thought I
would have some lunch at the new cafe/sandwich
bar type place. The queue was quite long and as
usual everyone is a bit impatient. All of a sudden
the cashier calls out that everyone in the queue
needs to move to the otherside of her cash register
as the lady in the kitchen couldn’t get through to
deliver coffee and things to the people sitting in
the few seats available. So we all then stood in
a queue which went out into the middle of the
traffic flow down to the baggage claim. Eventually
I made it to the front of the queue to be served.
I had to then walk past the cashier to see what
food was in the display cabinet to make my choice
further delaying everyone behind me. I ordered a
Q monorail yes or no?
ham sandwich and a small empanada. I gave the
cashier a $20 note. She gave me $2 change. I
said there must be some mistake and she said no
the sandwich was $12 and the empanada was $6.
To avoid further delaying everyone I just paid it.
The ham sandwich was just a ham sandwich and
the empanada was very nice. My whinge is that
the planning of this food outlet seems very poor
and the price was incredibly expensive. There
wasn’t enough seating and I ended up eating
standing up. I realise that there will be a new cafe
opening soon but it doesn’t bode well for the
winter season when things will be flat out. I hope
the airport gets this sorted asap.

COMMENT ON WHINGES! Go to www.lwb.co.nz
“ I’m not convinced the environmental impact
was significant enough to stop the project.”
You need to learn more about environmental
impacts then. It would have been HUGE.
Just look at the shit-storm you get when you
build a house. Now extrapolate that to a
monorail. “And the cost to the tax payer if
it was charged with removing a pink elephant
from a World Heritage Area.” I think you
mean White Elephant. But that’s just me
nitpicking... “Will our generation ever see
seriously ambitious engineering projects
undertaken or are all the great feats of human
endeavour in this part of the world done and
dusted?”...

language ability will be crucial to the success of your application. There are a
number of ways that the English language requirement can be satisfied. The
most common form is demonstrating that an individual holds a recognised
qualification where English language was the medium of instruction or
alternatively, as you are aware, the main applicant is able to demonstrate
that they have had skilled employment in New Zealand for at least 12 months
upon submission of the application. In addition, Immigration NZ can also
accept alternative forms of holding an English speaking background.
INZ will either accept that you possess acceptable English language ability
based on the information/documentation provided, or if they do not accept
your claim for English language ability (on reasonable grounds) they can
request you to provide an IELTS examination with an overall band score of 6.5
to meet the English language requirement. Unfortunately, if you can not meet
this, your residence application will be declined.
It is very rare for Immigration NZ to withdraw their request for an English
language test, where the request has been made on reasonable grounds and
their assessment of your application has triggered the need for the request.
We recommend that you arrange to sit this test within the timeframe requested
by Immigration NZ or alternatively, seek legal advice on your options.

“Legal Highs” - What Next?
These psychoactive drugs are illegal and off the shelf for now, but
they will be back once the government has put the testing regime
in place. They have caused considerable damage in our community violence, psychosis, seizures, hospitalisation, anxiety and dishonesty
among them. QLDC councillors Merv, Ferg and Cath are holding a
public meeting to hear what you want Council to do about them,
hear about the impacts on your families, and let you know more
about these drugs, their effects, and the different options Council has
to control them. Among speakers will be a local ex-addict.
