We all carry an invisible bucket. This bucket contains our feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel great; when it’s empty, we feel empty. A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people’s buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time. On the other hand, a bucket dipper says or does things to cause other people to feel bad. This simple but profound philosophy applies to every aspect of life. This is not a concept SBS created, but it is one we teach our children throughout the school year with our “Bucket Filling” program. This program is based on the educational works of Merrill Lundgren, a.k.a. “The Bucket Man.” In second grade at SBS, for instance, each student has a bucket (in 2B they have actual buckets, in 2A they use the invisible ones referenced above). Bucket-dipping consists of behaviors such as making fun of someone, being disrespectful, and bullying. (This of course is just a partial list of ways to dip into another’s bucket). Bucket filling, however, is when students do or say something loving, kind, respectful, or thoughtful. In 2A, each morning the children are asked to close their eyes for a few seconds and think, "I am going to fill a bucket today!" They are encouraged to envision themselves in their "mind's eye" doing all the wonderful bucket filling type kindnesses and gestures. At dismissal, each student is asked, “Did you fill a bucket today?" Many of the students don’t just say yes, but excitedly share exactly what they did to be a bucket filler! They are also asked how it made them feel, and as you can imagine, the responses are always positive. In 2B the children place a note in their buckets describing what they did; when the buckets get filled, the bucket fillers earn a reward. You might be wondering, “How do the kids who have invisible buckets know when theirs are full?” The answer is simple, and it the same for the kids with the actual buckets: “When their bucket is full, they feel more confident, secure, calm, patient, and friendly - - their thoughts are positive. And when their bucket is overflowing, they experience true happiness - - happiness that they can and want to spread to those around them. Ask yourself, “Have you ever felt better after someone gave you a smile or happy grin? That good feeling is because someone filled your bucket! Bucket Filling teaches the children: How to reach out and express love, respect, and show appreciation to others. To become other-centered rather than self-centered. To express their feelings (good & bad) in a healthy manner. To understand where feelings originate & how to protect their feelings from being hurt. To establish a framework for more constructive words and actions & less bullying. To create more positive home and school environments. Just another example of why SBS is a great place to be a child, and a great place to learn how to be a loving, kind, respectful, and thoughtful adult – in other words - - a Bucket Filler!! Former St. Benedict's Teacher Cornelia Altier Dies at 81 Cornelia Jane Altier, 81, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Lincroft, Red Bank and Matawan, died peacefully Monday, April 29, 2013, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. Cornelia was born in Queens, NY to Peter and Mabel Buchanan Johnston. She attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, NY. She then went on to earn her BA in English from the College of New Rochelle. At the age of 68, Cornelia was one of the oldest recipients of a heart transplant. The donated heart continued for 14 years, a courageous journey for science. She enjoyed her family and friends, travel and good food. She was happily employed as a Red Bank YMCA director, an antique business owner, and as a librarian at the Red Bank Public Library. Her favorite job was teaching; she worked at the Trinity School in New Rochelle, St. Benedict in Holmdel, in the Long Branch School System and volunteered with children in Red Bank. Cornelia was predeceased by her parents, in 1979; by her son, Robert C. Altier; and by her cousin, Nancy Burns. She is survived by her children, JP of Madison, David of Shrewsbury, Christopher and his partner of 23 years, Marco Hoyle of Boulder, CO and Susan of Prospect Lake; grandchildren, Robert, Connor and William of Madison; and her former husband, Joseph Altier Sr. of Venice, FL. "A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank...but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child." -- Forest Witcraft, Scholar, Teacher, and Boy Scout Administrator Teachers change lives and being the right teacher at the right time may be enough to transform a person's life forever. In many cases, teachers are the first people that believe a child’s dreams. That experience of having an authority figure believe in you and believe that you can succeed is something that carries certain students long after they graduate school. In honor of Mrs. Altier and her passion for teaching, if there was a teacher at SBS that changed your life for the better, please send us your story at [email protected] for inclusion future editions of the Alumni Newsletters. How it Works… If you rise to the challenge, all we ask is that you gift one dollar for every year since graduating from SBS. So, if you graduated in 1982, your suggested donation this year would be just $31. Class Competition! Challenges are always a little more fun with a little competition is thrown into the mix! To that end, we’re upping the challenge with a CLASS COMPETITION. We will keep track of total gifts for each SBS graduating class and the class that raises the most money will be recognized as “Alumni Challenge Champions.” One of our Advancement members has offered to donate a plague that will be hung in the lobby in honor of the Championship Class. The competition will run from July 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013 and we will provide monthly updates on the school’s website as well as in the next edition of the Alumni Newsletter. Supported Programs All money raised will be put toward the school’s tuition program. As you may recall from previous newsletters, St. Benedict has made it one of its primary missions to help keep Catholic School affordable for everyone who wishes and hopes to give that gift to their children! Didn’t Graduate from SBS? Not an SBS grad, but would still like to support the cause? We welcome your support and suggest that you consider making a gift based on the year you graduated from your own grammar school. You can even take part in the class competition by making your gift in honor of an SBS graduating class – perhaps a relative, neighbor, or friend’s graduating class? How Can I Make My Gift? To make a donation by check, please make payable to SBS and mail to: SBS Alumni Challenge C/O The Office of Advancement and Alumni Affairs 165 Bethany Road Holmdel, NJ 07733 If you have any questions about the 2013 Rebel Alumni Challenge, please contact at: [email protected] Anything Else I can Do? Spread the word to your classmates…Facebook is probably the best way to get to the greatest number of fellow grads so please don’t be shy about posting! . POLAR BEAR PLUNGE 2013 The air was cold & the water colder, But the chilly temps just made them bolder!! Our crew of plungers led by Father Dan, Plunged in the ocean and swam & swam (right back to land ;)! We still can’t help but wonder… Just how cold it was when they went under! A great big shout our Principal & all the families who came out & cheered… You rock school spirit & we hope to see you again next year!!! To the parishioners & everyone who supported the cause with your hard-earned cash… Thank you, thank you for helping SBS make such an awesome splash!!!! The Office of Advancement and Alumni Affairs once again organized SBS’s participation in the Ancient Order of Hibernian’s Seventh Annual Polar Plunge for Catholic Education. Thousands of dollars were raised for the remaining Catholic schools in the Diocese of Trenton and we were very proud to be part of the event - - but even prouder of our generous supporters and fearless plungers. A humongous THANKS to all our plungers… Father Dan; School Parents Bonnie Hughes, Steven Loniewski, & Jeff Barth (accompanied by his brother, Steve & several very cool friends); Parishioners Frank Cannarozzo; & Students Augie Granatelli, James Radics, & Matthew McDonald. (Many young SBS alum also plunged for their Catholic High Schools, so a big shout out to them as well)! Fellow Alum, it is never too early to express your interest in either participating in next year’s plunge or just helping us garner support and pledges. If you’ve been inspired by these brave souls and feel your inner polar bear emerging, please reach out to us at: sbsalumni@stbene dictnj.org PICTURES FROM THE DAY… Father Dan leading the pack Jeff’s personal cheering squad Steve Matthew Jeff and Friends Ms. Lilly, Augie, and James Our appreciation of your dedication to Catholic Education goes deeper than any ocean you’ll ever plunge into!! WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SBS… Recently, SBS had a “VERY BLUE DAY;” but instead of feeling sad, we were actually one again feeling empowered by the generosity and caring of the SBS community. LIGHT IT UP BLUE is an annual observation throughout the world dedicated to raising awareness of autism. There are many different ways to “ light it up” (we saw one street where every house had blue bulbs in their porch lights) and here at SBS all the students and staff came dressed all in blue. If any of the students and teachers wished to “ pay” for the dress down with a contribution to the Autism Speaks organization they could (and they did)! Most importantly, we all prayed that day not just for individuals with autism and their families, but also that others will become more aware of the challenges that autism can create. This year, the Seventh Grade Class once again sponsored the school’s annual “ Souper Bowl.” Any one that brought in a can of soup for the SVdP Society was eligible to vote for the team they hoped to take the championship game. However, as one of our teachers pointed out, regardless of who won the game, the real winners were the clients of the food pantry. Go SBS! March in Washington…this past January, Father Dan, Father Richard, a number of SBS students and parents, and SB parishioners braved the cold to participate in the annual March for Life rally in Washington, DC. Thousands of people marched down Constitution Avenue to the rallying point in front of the Supreme Court. Thank you to all who participated! SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITIES… Is your child a parishioner but not a student of SBS - but wants to be part of one of the many summer camps happening at the school this summer? No problem, we would love to have him/her join the fun (remember, we are one school, one church, one family)! He took up trumpet and piano in his youth and educated himself by reading theory and orchestration treatises, as well as practical experimentation. While still in his teens he studied with Dr. Robert Abramson of the Juilliard School, and learned to play every orchestral instrument with at least an elementary proficiency, to aid in his composing work. In his pre-college years Patrick devoured orchestral scores and textbooks, and wrote copiously; by the time he entered Montclair University he had already penned an expansive body of work, which included symphonies, concerti, chamber music, solo works a musical theatre work. Patrick's compositional output flourished while at Montclair, producing much chamber music and leading to commissions from the leading university musical ensembles. It was at Montclair where Patrick also took up serious study of conducting, which would help him produce three annual concerts to premiere his music. Patrick's composition teachers at MSU included Robert Aldridge, Dean Drummond, and Patrick Burns. Their varied teaching approaches and areas of expertise gave Patrick a solid foundation in orchestral, band, chamber, and educational music, as well as a growing interest in tuning systems and cross-discipline theatrical works. While at MSU Patrick was selected to participate in the first year of an exchange program with Moscow Conservatory. After studying composition and conducting in Russia for one semester, he gave the premiere of three works and was invited to address the assembly of the Moscow Modern Music Festival on microtonality in American contemporary music. Returning to America, Patrick attended New England Conservatory for his master’s degree, studying with Malcolm Peyton and developed a love of vocal and choral music. These mediums easily lent themselves to his development of multi-discipline musical works, which reflect the oldest roles music, played in society and unite art forms often kept separate. Patrick's current projects include 'new' operas, which modify the medium's traditional identity by presenting a more visceral theatrical work, which also allows for more flexible productions, and a string of chamber works involving dance, acting, lighting, electronics, and audience interaction. This past May Patrick graduated with a second Masters in Music in Orchestral Conducting from Ithaca College in New York and he became engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Jessica Dunn. http://www.patrickvalentinomusic.com/ Alumni…the past and future of our school! We would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate Zachary Verdi, SBS Class of 2009, who earlier this year was named by CBA principal Peter Santanello as one of 2013’s “Epitome of the Academy” seniors. To receive “Epitome of the Academy” distinction, a student must be nominated by the faculty and meet criteria in three major areas: he must demonstrate a good academic record, he must be a contributing member to the CBA community, and he must exemplify the ideals of CBA. Well done, Zack! Congratulations also to Samantha Durso, SBS Class of 2009. Lehigh University, where Samantha will be attending this fall, recently implemented an honors program that doubles as a Major called, "IDEAS" (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Science). Lehigh is the only university in the country to successfully implement such a program, and just recently graduated its first class of IDEAS Majors, all of whom found spectacular jobs or were accepted to well-regarded Graduate Schools due to the unique nature of their degrees. Over 300 students applied for entrance into the 2013-2014 program and Samantha was one of just 30 chosen. What this means for her is that she is now officially enrolled in both the School of Engineering and the School of Arts and Sciences at Lehigh; on her diploma her Major will be listed as “IDEAS with Concentrations in Behavioral Neuroscience and Bioengineering!” Three cheers for Casey Griffin, Griffin SBS Class of 2009… This This past year Casey was Captain of the SJV, undefeated, State Champion, NCA Open Large National Champion, Varsity Cheerleading team . Additionally, she was selected on the 2013 New Jersey All State Cheerleading team. Best of all, she’ll be attending Penn State State University this fall. “I’ve got a theory that if you give 100% all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.” Larry Bird - Basketball Please submit your milestones for inclusion in our next newsletter to: [email protected] Like most college/high school publications, any kind of milestone (personal or professional), info on kids/spouses, volunteer work, and/or anything else you can think of is great to include. A lot of us don’t know what you’ve been up to since graduating, so please feel free to share as much information as you want (including college info, post-graduate degrees, etc…). Also, please don’t forget to include the year you graduated and maiden name when applicable. ARRAY OF HOPE Multiple Music Acts Motivational Speakers Multimedia Presentations Teen Testimonies "Array of Hope," is a wide-ranging concert experience, with an ambitious mission: to bring Christ¹s message of love and hope to as many Catholics, Christians, and nonbelievers as possible. This two-hour multi-media extravaganza features multiple musical acts, motivational speakers, and thought provoking film presentations that joyously provide a counterweight to the negative media surrounding today's society. It brings Christ’s message of Faith, Hope and Love to its audiences. It especially celebrates an appreciation of the family that is so often denigrated in today’s music, movies, TV, radio and the Internet. The show’s key themes are the sanctity of life, the importance of God in the family and the loving support prayer can bring to the spiritual and emotional development of ourselves and our children. Understanding the negative influence of cultures throughout the world, Pope Benedict XVI called for a “New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Faith”. He directed Catholics to examine the journey made thus far, and to resume with fresh impetus the urgent work of the evangelization of today’s world. Following in his footsteps, the US Conference of Bishops is exhorting Catholics to develop a deeper relationship with Christ, and through worship, is calling them to participate in a more vibrant community life that focuses on marriage and a greater appreciation of the family. Array of hope specifically addresses these concerns. Array of Hope couldn’t have surfaced at a better time! Using various forms of media in a positive light, it reaches out to connect with people and offer them hope, no matter what problems and pain they are suffering. Advancing solutions founded in the love of Christ, the goal is to awaken a profound change in them, creating a world that is more loving and compassionate. The ultimate goal of Array of Hope is to plant the seed of the love of the Lord, Jesus Christ, in the hearts of all Christians, there by creating a resistance to the negative influence of today’s secular society. (And to do so through a joyous, entertaining program that they will remember throughout their lives). Its mission is to provide recovery services to individuals and families affected by disasters in Monmouth County. Services will be provided with no preference to individuals’ race, color, creed, gender, disability or religious affiliation. The goal of the MCLTRG is to assist all residents in recovery from disasters by addressing and prioritizing unmet needs. The St. Benedict Church and School family, under Father Dan’s leadership and guidance, played a major role in helping people in need after the hurricane. And FD’s involvement didn’t stop with Sandy. Along with other members of the community, he has also played a key part in forming the MCLTRG and serves on the executive board as secretary. MCLTRG’s approach to disaster relief is considered a national model to follow! St. Benedict School is seeking Alumni applicants to fill a vacancy on the School Board. You need not have children in the school to apply for the position. For more information about the responsibilities of a school board member or to learn how to receive an application packet, please contact Jen DeBiase at (732) 264-5578. MORE COLLEGE NEWS FROM THE CLASS OF 2009… Hopefully no one reading this will ever need disaster assistance, but if you do, don’t forget about this remarkable group…they are here to help. Stephanie Piccolo is off to Farleigh Dickenson for Nursing. Thank you Father Dan and the other members of MCLTRG for the difference you are making in people’s lives. Jessica Junquet is heading to Westchester University! MCLTRG [email protected] (732) 938-5988 Sean Sullivan is leaving for University of Delaware! NEW SCHOOL MASCOTS! Earlier this year we introduced our new mascots-Robbie Rebel and Benedict Bear. We are still and will forever be the “Rebels,” but we decided to send our former mascot (the figure with the floppy hat and moustache--a combination of images that no one could quite identify) into retirement and look to the animal world for a replacement. We settled on bears, whose characteristics are intelligence, curiosity, and strength.
