BTIA’s National President, Jim Scott, welcomed the group at the start of the meeting, and later conducted the board elections. A new Placencia Chapter Board was elected, and Mr. Stewart Krohn is the new Chairman for Placencia. Other board members are Steve Christensen, Beverly Cabral, Ycela Alpuche, David Vernon, Anne-Marie McNeil, & Hannah Cowell (photo right courtesy Muzamanzie Photographs). The agenda included a presentation on the Toledo Cacao Fest by Isel Alamilla, updates from Elysia Dial and remarks from outgoing Chairperson, Wendy Lemus. Nicole Solano was invited to present on Destination Belize 2012. The Destination Belize presentation was delivered on Barefoot Bar’s big screen, and featured a walk through the online media kit New PBTIA Chairman Urges Members To Get Involved at www.destinationbelize.com. Members were also informed that an iPad app was developed for the Media Kit, soon to be available for free download from the App Store. The group was pleased to learn about the new integrated marketing approach for this upcoming edition. Jim Scott informed members that discussions are currently underway between BTIA and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) to finalize the partnership details for the next edition of Destination Belize, and mentioned that there are several new and exciting possibilities that could further enhance the publication, including the possible involvement of high profile travel writers. Destination Belize representatives continue to visit with members and advertisers in all destinations, encouraging maximum involvement by tourism industry businesses and service providers countrywide. While details are available online, meetings can be arranged to discuss individual marketing needs. Placencia welcomes one and all to our annual Sidewalk Arts Festival! Dear Members: On behalf of the board of your Placencia chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association I would like to thank all those who participated in our recent annual general meeting. The record attendance indicates that interest in the affairs of our organization has never been higher but at the same time demonstrates that the challenges have never been greater. It is clear that the tourism industry on the Peninsula stands at a crossroads. The recently completed Placencia Road, pending sewer system, airstrip improvements and new international airport, combined with our traditional assets of excellent municipal water, electricity and telecommunications systems mean that all the preconditions for solid sustainable growth have been met. The question now arises of what we are going to do with these ample blessings. In 2010 our membership spoke loudly and clearly on the issue of cruise tourism. To put it simply: we don’t want it. A decision by cabinet is expected soon and given recent events in Belize City it is unthinkable that any responsible government Continued on pg 12 www.underwaterphotocontestbelize.com Remember the road to Placencia is lovely and paved from start to finish and makes the weekend of February 12 & 13, and any other time the Perfect Time to visit Placencia! The television crew visited Placencia where they engaged in a night-dive at Mosquito Caye, located eleven miles from Placencia. They did day-dives at Ranguana and Pompian Cayes, experiencing the splendors of the underwater world of Belize for the first time. The group was also introduced to Belizean wildlife as they toured Monkey River and saw various species of birds, iguanas, howler monkeys and crocodiles. The final leg of their itinerary took them to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, for dives at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Esmeralda dive sites, where they dived with nurse sharks, stingrays, turtles, and octopus, among various species of coral and fish. Bottom Time produces the series Dive Travel TV which visits dive destinations showcasing not only the diving, but also incorporating a unique twist of highlighting the diversity of the location. The Placencia Breeze – February 2011- Page 11 Believe It or Not, Astrologers Actually Saw This One Coming! An astrological controversy erupted online this month after a newspaper article erroneously suggested that the dates that determine the Zodiac signs had shifted by about a month, throwing millions of believers into self -doubt and panic. Fear not: your sign remains the same The tilt of the Earth's axis has gradually shifted since the ancient times when the Babylonians determined the dates of the Zodiac. The calendrical rejiggering also supposedly re-introduced a sign discarded by the Babylonians: Ophiuchus, alternatively called the much-cooler sounding Serpentarius. The news of this has unsettled some but has been no more than an eye brow raiser for others. But astrologers and astronomers -- two groups that don't always see eye-to-eye -- agree that this is old news. About 3,000 years old. Western astrologers included the wobble of the Earth's axis in their calculations centuries ago. The Zodiac we are all familiar with is still perfectly valid (as valid, anyway, as the Zodiac ever was). What has changed, subtly and very gradually, is the tilt of the earth's axis as it revolves around the sun. If you watch a spinning toy top you will see its axis wobble. That's called precession. The Earth's axis does the same thing. It's currently facing Polaris, often called the North Star, but 3,000 years ago it was pointing at an obscure star called Thuban. Three thousand years ago the sun was 'in' a certain constellation. Now due to precession it's about a whole constellation off from where it was when the Zodiac that we all know and love came to be. Originally the Zodiac was helpful in the sense that you could predict when to harvest and when to plant by observing the stars and where they were in the sky. This lends to the “predictive” nature of the Zodiac. Then some took it too far, using it to determine when to go to war and people's personalities. The 'New' Dates See if your Zodiac sign was said to have changed: Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16 Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11 Pisces: March 11- April 18 Aries: April 18- May 13 Taurus: May 13- June 21 Gemini: June 21- July 20 Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10 Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16 Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30 Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23 Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29 Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17 Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 20 Has your sign changed? JOHN'S PRIMARY SCHOOL As you may know, our Primary School is undergoing many changes this school season. We have a new principal, Mrs. Martinez, who is directed by Anglican Management to increase school standards, testing scores and overall efficiency. However, many things do remain the same. The PTA is still responsible for significantly financially supporting the Primary School. The PTA is currently responsible for raising a MONTHLY minimum of $1,000. Clearly, Placencia's support is necessary to make St. John's a success. EDUCATIONAL UPDATE: Placencia is growing and so is our school! The upstairs floor now holds comfortable classrooms for Standards IV, V and VI. Infant One has so many students that the group was split into two classes. Anglican Management noted that some students were passed into Standard V without the necessary skills. Standard V was recently tested to assess that all were in the correct class; sadly, only 2 students passed. This year we will rely upon Principal Martinez to make sure that only students up to class standard are passed on. She is planning on splitting the class into two and providing remedial support to the many students in need. In order to partially raise $1,000 monthly the PTA has reinvigorated the sponsorship program, where people and businesses commit to give a monthly amount to the PTA. Coming soon will be a list of the businesses who sponsor the school so you too can support them as they help maintain our children's education! Also, we will be holding raffles and other fun one-time events. We would like to congratulate our newest raffle winners, Mr. and Mrs. Russo, who happily won $500!! Generously, they gave the PTA back $200 of their winnings! Thanks Mr and Mrs. Russo! To make donations, please contact any member of the PTA. Any amount is appreciated and needed. We look forward to next month when we will update you on our newest activities. When you have a chance, please remember to say "Thanks" to the Teachers and the Principal. They are teaching the future leaders of Belize! PARENT/TEACHER UPDATE: Many members of the previous hardworking PTA resigned. We thank them for all their diligent work!! The current members of the PTA are: Andria Villanueva (President), Jacqueline Aldana (Vice President), Kilah Eiley (Secretary), Claudia Hardegger, (Treasurer), and Councilors Henry Anderson, Jesus Cawich, Linda Garcia, Selena Lucas and Albertina Mo. New PBTIA Chairman Urges Members To Get Involved Continued from pg 2 would seek to spread that chaos and controversy beyond its present location. But simply saying no to the cruise lines is not a meaningful strategy for development. That is why one of the major priorities for this year will be to coordinate a proactive planning process that will include both village councils and other community groups from the entire peninsula. Having said what we don’t want, it’s time to say what we do want. This process and several other initiatives on crime, road landscaping, marketing and training will require not just the energy of the board but also the membership. We are the largest BTIA chapter in the country and our membership boasts a tremendous amount of talent and experience. Please give us your ideas, your advice and volunteer to work on our numerous fundraising activities. If you are not yet a member, please join. If you are a member, please renew your membership today. We have a great staff at the Placencia Tourism Center. They would love to see you. Sincerely, Stewart Krohn Chairman, PBTIA PTA December 2010 Raffle winners. Don’t know? Well let’s try & eat them!! Weh fi do wit di Lian Fish prablem? Noh nuh? Well lego eat ney!!! Lionfish are voracious predators and can consume almost 80% of juvenile fish recruits including the important fishery export products like snappers and groupers, and parrotfish, which help keep the coral reefs clean of algae. Lionfish are also known to eat crustaceans, like the spiny lobster. In 30 minutes a lionfish was observed eating more than 20 fish! Many countries in the Caribbean are developing response plans to mitigate the negative impacts lionfish have on native fish populations and the coral reef ecosystems. ECOMAR is working with the National Coral Reef Monitoring Network's Lionfish Committee on developing a National Lionfish Response Plan that will be presented to stake holders throughout Belize. Recently San Pedro held the very first Lionfish Tournament in Belize. Huge catches came in and after a the fish were counted and measured. Later demonstrations were held on how to properly handle, clean, fillet and ready the lionfish for cooking. After that it was time to eat with samples of different lionfish dishes being given away. CATCHING THE FISH: All that you need to catch a Lionfish is snorkeling gear, gloves and a spear. The best way to catch a Lionfish is by spearing them. Lionfish are normally found close to rock or reef croppings, so bottom fishing for Lionfish could lead to many snagged hooks. Lionfish do not normally hide under rocks, they are almost always out in the open and easily visible. Lionfish do not spook easily, so get as close as you can before you make your shot. Some divers wait until their spear tip is 3-4 inches away from the fish before they make their shot, making it a guaranteed hit. Once you've speared the fish, make sure to keep it at the end of your spear until you can place it on your boat. In the case that you don't have a boat, put the fish in a custom bag or stringer that would not allow the spines to sting you. Be careful not to point your spear upwards because the Lionfish can slide down and sting you. CLEANING THE FISH: Once the fish has died, the venom in the spines remains active for up to an hour, so be cautious when handling and preparing the fish. This venom is ONLY in the spines however, not in the flesh. There are two ways to clean a Lionfish: First, you can simply filet the fish and remove the skin, throwing the rest of the carcass away. The second option is to grab the fish at his eyeballs with a pair of pliers, then take a filet knife and cut Continued on pg 22 The Placencia Breeze – February 2011- Page 16 St. John’s “Student of the Month” Dec ’10 & Jan ‘11 The children awarded Student of the Month for December 2010. The scales come off so easily that you can remove them by spraying the scales backwards with a water hose. You now have beautiful white meat that is completely safe to eat. COOKING THE FISH: Here are some easy, quick cooking tips. Lemon Pepper Lionfish: Take a Lionfish filet, sprinkle it with lemon pepper, and put it in a pan of hot olive oil. Lightly sear on both sides. Lionfish Ceviche: Cut your Lionfish filets into thin strips and place into a bowl of fresh squeezed lime juice. Add thinly sliced onions, bell peppers and carrots. Top with capers. Let it sit for at least five minutes before eating. SAVOUR BELIZE…. Promote your restaurant to the world at no cost through the BTB More and more travelers are discovering Belize's unique culinary offerings, which is why the Belize Tourism Board is launching a new website to help promote our country's unique, diverse and savory cuisine. Fittingly called SavorBelize, this new website will be vacationers' go-to resource for everything related to Belizean food, including listings of restaurants throughout the country, recipes of local fare, photos, promotions, food blogs and more. Deep fried lionfish: If you haven't filleted your Lionfish and still have the body, bones and all, you can simply score the flesh, dip it in batter and give it a fry until golden brown. Of course you can also do this with fillet! Lionfish Tacos Use soft flour or crunchy corn tortillas. Spice Lionfish Filets with blackened seasoning and sear on a hot pan with olive oil. Place Lionfish in tortilla. By Marco Supaul The holiday season is a time of togetherness, festivities and giving. It is the time of the year for catching up with friends and family and seeing what they have been up to in the past year. It brings joy and happiness to the whole family. When the holiday comes around some people only like to look forward to what they might receive but they tend to forget that it is really a time to give. One way to show the spirit of the season is by giving to those who are less fortunate than you. The Inn at Robert’s Grove has not forgotten the old saying “It is better to give than to receive.”. For the past 7 years the whole staff takes part in has taken part in a very special program. Each member of the staff gives a monetary contribution and then that total is matched by Bob & Risa Frackman, the owners of the Inn at Robert’s Grove. The funds raised are used to purchase goods that become 10 Christmas hampers that are then given to worthy families in both Placencia and Seine Bight Village. The hampers not only contains ham and turkey but rice and beans, salad ingredients, cranberry sauce, grapes, apple, cake and a case of soda. Members of the staff are chosen to go out and give these hampers to the different families. In Placencia Christmas hampers were given to the households of Ms. Wendy Westby, Ms. Amelia Godfrey, Ms. Barbara Andrews Ms. Jacqueline Aldana, & Ms. Lisa Westby. In Seine Bight the Christmas hampers were given to the households of Ms. Sonia Augustine, Ms. Sharon Thomas, Ms. Denise Cruz, Ms. Geneva Thomas, & Mr. Simeon Alvarez aka Joker. When we give back to the community it warms hearts, not only those who receive, but those that are giving. When we give back we show that we care for our brothers and sisters in our community because that is what we are. When we live in a community where most people know each other it touches every ones hearts to know that people care and is willing to give back. It is nice to see that the spirit of giving is strong on our beautiful peninsula. Robert’s Grove and all the great people that work there say they plan on continuing this program for as long as they can! The Placencia Breeze February 2011- Page 24 The Placencia Breeze -February 2011- Page 25 ROTARY CLUB OF PLACENCIA NEWS December is Family Month for Rotary and we all take time to enjoy the holidays, but, work continues on planning for the coming year as we try to make it more successful than the last. 2010 was a good year for our Club and our community and it is our goal to top it in 2011 with more fund raising projects and community service projects. BINGO For those missing the monthly Bingo games (November was cancelled due to the cricket match and December wasn’t held due to the holidays), rest assured that it is our intention to resume the monthly games in January and to do our best to hold them on the third Saturday of each month. Please watch the bulletin board at the field, check the public access channel on cable TV, listen to LOVEFM, and watch for signs around the Village for information on the next game. Tentatively, we expect to hold the first game of the new year on January 15, 2011 and we hope to see you there. FIRESIDE Our last Fireside of the year was held in December at the home of Sandra and Ron Steele. As always, the party featured a buffet of great food (everyone brings a dish to share), lots of laughs from the various games (coordinated by Maretha McCullock), and, most of all, the fellowship with the members of our Club. We try to hold at least 4 Firesides each year and, due to busy schedules, have fallen a bit behind for this Rotary Year (July 2010 to July 2011), but, another is scheduled for February 2011 which will feature the return of Bill Mcelaney to Placencia with his showmanship and great Irish music ensuring a good time for all. SCHOLARSHIPS The Rotary Club of Placencia is currently sponsoring 3 scholarship students (Marco Supaul, Misty Vernon, and Monique Vernon). Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we will be picking up 2 more students, who have been selected but not officially informed at this time, and it is expected that 3 more students may be picked up next school year due to a matching grant from Rotary International. These students are required to maintain passing grades (they must attend a Rotary meeting with their report cards each term), write letters updating their sponsors on their progress, and perform community service as part of their scholarships, in addition to several other requirements set forth in their scholarship contracts. Our current students have done well and have been fulfilling their community service requirements which, we hope, will instill a value system that includes volunteering on a regular basis to improve their community and the world as they approach adulthood. ONGOING/UPCOMING Work has already started on several projects for 2011 including the continuation and expansion of our scholarship program, soliciting donations for our annual auction (to be held in February during the Arts Festival), examining and evaluating several projects to submit for possible funding under Rotary International’s Future Vision project, and planning for a literacy project if funds are received from Rotary International. These, and many other potential projects, require a significant amount of work to set them up, administer them, and raise funds. Based upon this, we will also be doing our best to attract new members so that we can do as much as possible to meet needs in the Schools, the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department, the Medical Clinic and various other causes as needs arise. OUR CLUB We are pleased to add Gail Dusa to our membership ranks as a transfer from her Rotary Club (of which she is Past President) in Colorado. While we are certain that our recent additions of members will help in getting the job done, we still need more members. Please consider joining us and experiencing the fellowship and fun that our organization offers in addition to the personal satisfaction that comes with giving back to your community and the world. Information on membership is available by attending one of our meetings (Tuesdays at 12:30 PM at Yoli’s), visiting our web site (www.rotaryclubofplacencia.org) or speaking to any member. The exhibition presents four series in the artist’s oeuvre: Bums, Nudes, Night Prowls and Washing Line Landscapes. The collection- spanning four years of activity- is based almost entirely in Belize were Messenger finds her inspiration and subject matter. The artist divides her time equally between London and Placencia, and this will display will be the first solo show of the Messenger’s work in Belize City. Messenger was born in London in 1980, studying art at Wimbledon School of Art before graduating with a BA (Hons) in photography from the Bournemouth Arts Institute (2003). In addition to her initial success as a commercial photographer in London, Messenger is best known for her Pop Art Bottoms, which combine hand-painting, photography and the human body in unique and visually arresting ways. Messenger’s work has exhibited in over 20 group exhibitions in London, Paris, New York and Miami as well as four solo exhibitions. The Cynthia Corbett Gallery, London, represents her work. The exhibit is free and open to the public and on view until February 28th, 2011. Photographic prints will be available for sale. Information on this and other Image Factory exhibits can found at www.imagefactorybelize.com Look for Boyarde and her work at the 8th annual Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival! The Placencia Breeze February 2011- Page 29 The Beauty of Nail Art Nail art, the practice of painting decorative designs on your fingernails, is a fun way to brighten up your everyday look or accessorize a special occasion outfit. There are a variety of nail art designs available, ranging from subtle and understated to funky and outrageous. For example, you could choose to paint flowers on your nails for a date or spell out the name of your favorite athletic team on the day of the big game. While the more intricate designs are best left to a professional, it’s possible to create simple nail art at home. The key to any successful nail art design is starting with clean and well-shaped nails. Nails should be neatly trimmed and filed before painting. Even the most accomplished artist can’t create an attractive design on nails that have been bitten down to stubs. If your natural nails are beyond repair, consider applying artificial acrylic nails before painting your nail art design. Once you’ve painted your nails with a neutral base coat, you can draw your design using a special thin-tipped nail brush. However, beginners may choose to improvise by creating their designs with a bobby pin or toothpick. Regardless of which application method you choose, it’s best to use a cotton swab and pure acetone to remove any polish application mistakes. Work as fast as possible, since nail polish dries fairly quickly. To save time, have a separate brush for each color of polish. There are many different methods you can use to come up with nail art designs. Many beginners like to copy from pictures they have found on the internet or in nail art books. Some larger nail salons also offer classes for people interested in learning how to do their own nail art. However, even people with minimal artistic talent can learn to freehand geometric shapes or floral designs. While most nail art designs are created simply using various colors of nail polish, you can add sparkle to your designs by mixing glitter into one or more of the polish colors before painting your nails. Using stick-on nail art jewels is another great way to jazz up a simple nail art motif. Tiny stickers can make it easier to create more elaborate designs. Placencia-pets.org The Humane Society in January by: Bob Thomas With all the holidays and activities that take place in December, it was decided to forgo the monthly clinic and focus the attention on the January clinic. Dr Bennet, the attending veterinarian, was kept pretty busy on both January clinic days. Many of the folks who brought their pet in to the clinic also took advantage of this months’ sale items. Both Heartguard and Iverhart were offered at half price. All members of PHS were rewarded with an additional dollar off each dose! Every month, PHS offers a sale item at the clinic and special discounts on some items are offered exclusively to members. For those who care to know: Spays - 2 cats & 1 dog Neuter - 1 dog Surgery - 1 cyst removal, 1 teeth cleaning Shots - 4/1 - 1, 6/1 - 19, rabies - 16 Mark your calendars for February 19th, the date for the 2nd annual Fur Ball. This years’ event will take place at The Barefoot Bar. The word is that a lot of great prizes have already been donated. Look for prize lists and updates through BTIA and on Facebook. For those of you who attended last years’ Fur Ball, I know you won't want to miss this one. For those who didn't attend, don't make the same mistake twice. We guarantee a good time! A call for PHS help can come in any number of ways. Sometimes tourists will alert PHS of a problem. In this story, a PHS member in Riversdale was notified by some tourists that there were six starving dogs on Bugle Caye. As soon as it could be arranged, a boat with four PHS members journeyed to Bugle Caye to investigate. All six dogs greeted the boat and were soon treated to some chow from the large bag of dog food that had been brought along. Although not vicious, the dogs displayed a lot of fear of humans. One of the dogs, it was noticed, had fishing line wrapped around one leg. It had obviously been there for some time as evidenced by the fact that it was now grown into the skin. The guys made a makeshift snare, captured the dog and removed the offending fishing line. It was later learned that a local fisherman was aware of the dogs and he would stop and feed them what fish he could spare whenever he could. These dogs all appear to be adoptable, but remain at Bugle Caye until homes can be found for them. PHS, of course, continues to provide food for them at the Caye. A call came from Hopkins requesting a male for adoption. One of the males was retrieved from Bugle Caye, and aptly christened Bugle Boy. He was brought to Placencia pending delivery to Hopkins. It turns out Bugle Boy should be named Houdini as he has escaped twice and at this time, is still on the lam. He is of medium size, reddish brown, longish hair and wearing a blue collar with about 5 feet of chain attached to it. He will answer to any name - as long as there's food involved! If you spot him, please notify PHS. As of this writing, there are still two females and three males living on Bugle Caye and waiting for some loving parents or foster parents. If you can find it in your heart to offer love and a home to one or more of these dogs, either permanently or as a foster parent, please call PHS. If you should need to contact PHS or wish to volunteer or become a foster or forever home to a dog or cat needing a home, please call: For surgeries, clinic scheduling, or clinic questions, etc., contact Pat Rarrick @ 610-0522 For Adoptions and general questions contact Mary Smith @ 523-4306 The Placencia Breeze – February 2011- Page 31 PENINSULA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS PENINSULA FIRE BOARD PLACENCIA, BELIZE The months of November and February 2011 were mercifully quiet for the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) with only 1 fire call received. Unfortunately for those impacted by the fire, the call was received at 3:55 AM on Christmas morning for a house fire in Seine Bight. No one was injured, however, the house was lost. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. EQUIPMENT DONATION The group from Canada that came down to install the playground equipment also brought a significant amount of fire gear to donate to the PVFD including helmets, boots, fire jackets, fire pants, gloves, flashlights, foam and uniforms. This equipment will help to protect our firefighters in the performance of their duties and is greatly appreciated. Our thanks go out to Stephen Lindrop and the Rotary Club of Nisku-Leduc in Alberta, Canada for bringing down the equipment and Troy Mutch and the Volunteer Fire Fighters of Thorsby Alberta for putting the equipment together. Donations like this help greatly in providing protection for the dedicated volunteers of the PVFD as they go about the important task of helping to keep people and property safe in our community. safe as possible to attend a practice and see what being a firefighter for the PVFD is all about. More volunteers are needed, please consider doing what you can to help out. This is your community, help protect it by serving. BURN PERMITS The public is reminded that no burning of yard waste is allowed without obtaining a Burn Permit from the PVFD. Before burning, please contact Fire Chief Kathy Anglin at 626-0667 to make arrangements. Continued from: The Beauty of Nail Art pg. 29 Once you’ve finished your design, proper maintenance will help keep your nail art in top condition for as long as possible. Apply a coat of protective clear nail polish every two or three days for the duration of your manicure. Wear gloves when doing tasks that may damage your nails and resist the urge to pick or bite your nails. UPCOMING/ONGOING EVENTS Work is continuing on the Flaming Heart Ball scheduled for March (date and venue to be provided soon, watch for advertisements) as Cindy Weller and Stephanie Wandke are organizing what will prove to be the best one yet. This is the major fundraiser for the PVFD and we ask that the community, in recognition of the important role the Fire Department plays in making our communities safer, come out and support their Fire Department. Work is also continuing on securing a full time National Fire Service (NFS) firefighter for permanent assignment to Placencia. Since the truck was delivered to Placencia, the NFS has provided firefighters on a rotating basis to operate and maintain the truck and NFS firefighters from Independence have assisted on as “as needed” basis, including recent repairs required to the pump on the truck. We appreciate the assistance we have received to date, but look forward to the assignment of a permanent firefighter (expected some time early this year). The other major project still being worked on is the establishment of a dry hydrant system to take water from the sea or the lagoon in Placencia Village and Seine Bight Village. With proper placement of these dry hydrants, the fire truck will be able to access them and hook up to pressurize the hoses in much less time than it takes to access a water supply and set up the pumps now. Once a plan is decided upon, funding for the project will be pursued. PRACTICE Practices for the PVFD are held every Saturday at 9:00 AM starting at the substation across from the Police Station. The number of firefighters that have been regularly attending these practices has been disappointingly small which makes the job taken on by the PVFD much more difficult. We encourage anyone interested in helping to protect their community and make it as Don’t feel like doing it yourself? Check out Secret Garden Day Spa an ask for Nikita or at Z-touch ask for Annie. Each cabana is outfitted with a king bed, full bathroom with hot and cold running showers, and a private terrace with hammocks and stairs that descend directly into the Caribbean. A small restaurant and bar, also built over the water, serves three meals daily – or on your private cabana terrace if you’d prefer. An ideal setting for honeymooners and sportsmen alike, this “swept away” island paradise is surrounded by crystal clear water, ideal for swimming (right off your own terrace), snorkeling and diving. The nearby flats are renowned for fishing as well. The inn is happy to arrange rendezvous diving, fishing and snorkeling guides – even a massage therapist -- upon request. Kayaks and snorkeling gear are complimentary to island guests. Reservations for dinner or lodging call 5233565 Whipray Caye Lodge: Whipray Caye is a magical private island in the heart of some of the best fly fishing flats in the world. This caye has room to roam, with two spacious 2room guest cabanas, private bath in each room, and verandas facing a glorious Belizean sunrise. Hearty family-style meals are served in our thatched roof restaurant and "Sea Urchin Bar". Enjoy the natural unspoiled beauty of the coral reef surrounding the caye, chock full of beautiful tropical fish of all shapes and sizes, rays, sharks, turtles, crab, and even the occasional manatee, all nurtured by the abundant mangroves on the southern half of the caye. Owner and renowned fly fishing guide Julian Cabral and his wife Beverly will make your stay a memorable one.
