Challenges & opportunities for the Solar Shading Industry in EU Peter Winters, President ES-SO Special presentation for the12TH ANNUAL HVAC and ENERGY EFFICIENCY Workshop October 25th 2012 1 Challenges & opportunities for the Solar Shading Industry in EU Agenda: • ES-SO: Who are we • Solar Shading: Energy savings & comfort liveability • Building development and European direction • Challenges and Opportunities 2 Who are we? The umbrella body of the solar shading trade associations from different European countries Solar shading in Europe: 400,000 people across the 27 States of the European Union with annual sales of over € 15 billion www.es-so.com 3 11 full members (national solar shading organizations), 19 Countries represented Austria BVST Belgium VEROZO Finland Aurinkosuojaus Ry France SNFPSA Germany ITRS Italy ASSITES the Netherlands ROMAZO Sweden SSF Switzerland VSR UK BBSA Poland Polish Access and Sun Protection Association + Associate Members Euroblinds (Cyprus), Velux (Denmark), CRH (Ireland), Gradhermetic (Spain), Somfy CEE (Central EU) , Hunter Douglas (Norway) + Supporting Members Sun & Shadow (Greece), De Leeuw Ltd (UK), PAMA (US) 4 ES-SO: Who are we? Defend, promote and support interests of our industry Joint effort = Catalysing energy! Solar Shading = essential building technology for effective e-performance Evolving to healthy and natural comfort including day lighting (liveability!) 5 1. ES-SO: Who are we? Permanent contact between members and authorities Location: Brussels, ideally placed Positive contribution in helping EU Commission obtaining Energy Strategy Contributory & advisory capacity 6 Solar Shading? Our top three arguments on solar shading 1. 2. 3. Reduces need for artificial cooling in summertime and therefore saves precious electric primary energy If intelligently automated, reduces heating needs in winter by harvesting free, renewable solar energy Promotes the use of free, renewable and natural daylight, reducing the need for electricity for lighting, Evolving to healthy natural comfort (liveability!) All products combined, can reduce the energy consumption in the EU’s building stock by almost 10%, according to ES-SO’s scientific study ESCORP-EU25 7 Europe Annual averages of daily sum Optimal 2-axis Irradiation data source: http://re.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pvgis/ 8 The Shard - London Sunday Times June 2011 9 Olli Seppänen Secretary General REHVA 2. Solar Shading? ”The selection of solar shading should always be one of the first steps in the design of HVAC systems.” ”The integration of solar shading is more and more important in the future to optimize the investment and operation costs.” 10 The dynamic filter of the facade 11 The U value is not enough anymore Dynamic g value with automation!! Daylight & Heat 12 South façade Poznan = external shading Double sheet clear glass, mid grey Sunworker Net saving => 36,1% 13 For ONE room/year! 14 Effect of good visual comfort / Liveability 3.75% median productivity increase [CMU] 20 to 25% less health complaints [Hartkopf] 15% reduced absenteeism [Thayer] 10 to 25% better performance on test of mental function 20 to 26% faster progress of students [Heshong] Promotes free, renewable and natural daylight Evolving to healthy natural comfort 15 Effect of good visual comfort / Liveability Photo Somfy 16 Effect of good visual comfort / Livability Photo Somfy 17 The extra investment in solar shading as a function of glazing percentage REHVA Guidebook No 12 – How to integrate Solar shading in sustainable buildings Dynamic Solar shading = absolutely essential, just like the window is! 18 Building development and European direction 19 Building development and European direction Some Facts… • EU Commission determines 80% of national laws through Directives or Regulations • Determinant for industry, so we need to act and lobby! • EU 20-20-20 is certainly to improve climate, and energy efficiency but… • Reality = $ or € are the hard facts! 20 Building development and European direction 100% Natural Gas Solid fuels 60% 40% 20% Ireland Luxembourg Sweden Estonia Czech Republic Slovenia Romania Denmark Poland United Kingdom Austria Germany France Latvia Bulgaria Finland Hungary Slovakia Belgium Netherlands Greece Spain Italy Portugal -20% Lithuania 0% EU27 Net (Extra-EU) imports as a % of total GIEC Crude oil and petroleum products 80% Member State net (Extra-EU27) imports of natural gas, oil and solid fuels as a % of total Gross Inland Energy Consumption, 2007 (IEA) 21 Building development and European direction 35 % net Oil import = + 10 Mio barrels/day Almost 4 Billion/year or +/- 350 Billion € Total Energy Supply EU 27 = About 900.000.000.000 € (almost a trillion € !!!) 55% = NET IMPORT 488.000.000.000 € draining away every year, we can no longer afford it! *PR European Parliament “Energy Efficiency: Billions to be made in savings Ref N° 20120907IPR50808 22 Building development and European direction 41% of total = e-consumption in buildings, approximately 370 Billion € E-savings from 30 to 60% in buildings achievable 10% can be saved by Shading (Escorp 25 study) = about 37 Billion € = about 3 X annual turnover of our total EU Solar Shading industry With smart, integrated and combined holistic building technologies for new build & renovation. 23 Building development and European direction 2020 onward all new build shall be “nearly zeroenergy” Revolutionary change in insulation of the opaque parts and air-tightness + heat recovery through windows comes to mind first Building envelope = main source of energy loss or gain Windows are the weak spot & not dynamic 24 Energy efficiency is mentally associated with better insulation of buildings. Right? 25 But what about the weak spots: the windows? WHO LOOKS AFTER THE DYNAMICthe INSULATION OF WINDOWS? Who insulates windows? 26 Building development and European direction Trend to low energy housing if without dynamic solar shading overheating unavoidable is fact! Slightest energy coming in is trapped, cannot get out because of extra insulation and airtightness! Remember irradiation data up to +2500kWh/m²y Easy solution air-conditioning? First avoid the problem! 27 Building development and European direction “Now, air conditioning guzzles 15 per cent of total American energy consumption, higher than any other country, using the same amount of fossil fuel as the whole of Africa employs for all its energy needs.” ‘Cold Comfort’, Rob Sharp in The Independent of Aug 3, 2010 28 The horror scenario 29 Building development and European direction Solution with dynamic automatic external + internal solar shading Using the energy of the sun in heating season Keeping out excessive heat in cooling season Solar Shading = essential building technology for effective e-performance Evolving to healthy and natural comfort including day lighting (liveability!) 30 24 hrs with energy smart controls 00.00 08.00 12.00 18.00 00.00 31 For example… Challenges & Opportunities Enormous development possibilities if applied systematically Industry is ready for quality & EU standards Should be considered as first client – architect meeting takes place. Become part of building codes (is in many countires) Included certification systems like BREEAM or LEED 33 Challenges & Opportunities Information & education of all building partners Become part of all architects knowledge, communicate and training them Support CEN & ISO standards for optical properties and performance of solar shading Promotion simulation & design tools Development of new metrics and ratings Permanent innovations & partner with other technologies in holistic approach 34 Solar shading for low energy buildings FEBRUARY 2012 Edition 1 How shutters and blinds reduce the energy needs of buildings and improve their thermal and visual comfort 35 Let the Shine!
