Yep! We have it - Indiana history, Indiana government, Indiana biographies and works by Indiana authors. It’s great that the Library has a rich representation of, well, all things Indiana. But, to
me, the best part of the Indiana Room is its Genealogy Department. Bloomfield’s Genealogy Department is the area reserved for the residents of Greene County. It’s the area
where you and your family have a place in history – and a place on our shelves.
Inside this
issue:
The Genealogy Department has local history, family histories, cemetery

Set against the tumultuous background of apartheid South Africa, a powerful and moving debut about family, sacri-
fice, and discovering what it means to belong…
Celia Mphephu knows her place in the world. A black servant working in the white suburbs of
1960s Johannesburg, she’s all too aware of her limitations. Nonetheless, she has found herself
a comfortable corner: She has a job, can support her faraway family, and is raising her youngest child, Miriam.
But as racial tensions explode, Celia’s world shifts. Her employers decide to flee the political
turmoil and move to England—and they ask to adopt Miriam and take her with them. Devastated at the prospect of losing her only daughter, yet unable to deny her child a safer and
more promising future, Celia agrees, forever defining both their futures.
As Celia fights against the shattering violence of her time, Miriam battles the quiet racism of
England, struggling to find her place in a land to which she doesn’t belong—until the call of
her heritage inexorably draws her back to Africa to discover the truth behind her mother’s
choices and uncover a heartbreaking secret from long ago…
A work of fiction inspired by the real-life, 37-year friendship between two towering figures of the late nineteenth century, famed writer Mark Twain and legendary explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley.
From their early days as journalists in the American West, to their admiration and support of
each other's writing, their mutual hatred of slavery, their social life together in the dazzling literary circles of the period, and even a mysterious journey to Cuba to search for Stanley's adoptive
father, TWAIN & STANLEY ENTER PARADISE superbly channels two vibrant but very different
figures. It is also a study of Twain's complex bond with Mrs. Stanley, the bohemian portrait artist Dorothy Tennant, who introduces Twain and his wife to the world of séances and mediums
after the tragic death of their daughter.
The resulting novel is a richly woven tapestry of people and events as Hijuelos ingeniously
blends correspondence, memoir, and third-person omniscience to explore the intersection of
these Victorian giants in a long vanished world.
“City on Fire is a big, stunning first novel and an amazing virtual reality machine, whisking us back to New York City in
the 1970s with bravura swagger and style and heart . . .
The ghosts of New York memorialized by earlier writers—F. Scott Fitzgerald, J. D. Salinger,
Richard Price—hover over City on Fire. At the same time, the novel’s ambition and Dickensian
storytelling ardor will remind many readers of Donna Tartt’s dazzling The Goldfinch, while its
fuel-injected prose and nimble stacking of plot complications will recall for others Martin
Amis’s classic portrait of Gotham in Money. But this novel is defiantly and indelibly Hallberg’s
own: a symphonic epic that reaches a crashing crescendo during the blackout of July 13, 1977 .
. . [In] Hallberg’s XXL tool kit as a storyteller: a love of language and the handsprings he can
make it perform; a bone-deep knowledge of his characters’ inner lives that’s as unerring as
that of the young Salinger; an instinctive gift for spinning suspense. He also possesses a journalistic eye for those telling details that can trigger memories of the reader’s own like small
Proustian grenades . . . A novel of head-snapping ambition and heart-stopping power—a novel that attests to its
young author’s boundless and unflagging talents.” —Michiko Kakutani, New York Times
The somewhat true story of a man, his wife, and her alligator…
Elsie Lavender and Homer Hickam (the future parents of the author) were high school classmates in the West Virginia coalfields, graduating just as the Great Depression began. When Homer asked for her hand, Elsie instead headed to Orlando where she sparked with a dancing actor named Buddy Ebsen (yes, that Buddy Ebsen). But when Buddy headed for New York, Elsie’s dreams of a life with him were crushed and eventually she
found herself back in the coalfields, married to Homer.
Unfulfilled as a miner’s wife, Elsie was reminded of her carefree days with Buddy every day because of his unusual wedding gift: an alligator named Albert she raised in the only bathroom in
the house. Eventually Homer gave Elsie an ultimatum: “Me or that alligator!” After giving it
some thought, Elsie concluded there was only one thing to do: Carry Albert home.
Carrying Albert Home is the funny, sweet, and sometimes tragic tale of a young couple and a
special alligator on a crazy 1,000-mile adventure. Told with the warmth and down-home charm
that made Rocket Boys a beloved bestseller, Homer Hickam’s rollicking tale is ultimately a testament to that strange and marvelous emotion we inadequately call love.
