NEWSLETTER | MAY 2016
PRESIDENT’S PEN
I cannot believe I
am already
writing the May
edition of the
newsletter. This
year is flying by
at an extraordinary pace.
Backtracking to
March, the Texas Association of Builders
held their winter meetings at he historic
Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio. Our
local HBA was very well recognized in
more ways than one. Congratulations to
Gene Lantrip for winning the overall membership contest. He is at 100% membership with his current sub list. The HBA was
also recognized as “Association of the
Quarter” for membership overall. Keep up
the good work folks. Membership is the
driving force behind this association and I
must say that our members are as good as
gold. Thank you for all that you do and for
your commitment to the industry.
While we were there I got to
have a little fun with the HOMEPAC Top
Golf costume party. I was pretty proud of
my 2nd place finish. The fundraiser was a
total success and our group had a great
time enjoying fellowship with one another.
Speaking of HOMEPAC allow me to brag a
little further on our association by letting
you know we are currently exceeding our
goal for HOMEPAC contributions. That’s
Awesome!
AEP Texas hosted a fantastic HBA
After Hours. They didn't skip a beat on the
Tim Akens
food or drinks and they were generous
enough to give out about $500 worth of
door prizes. If you weren't there, you
missed out, but you’ll have the chance to
join us in May for the 3rd Annual Washer
Tournament hosted by Morrison Supply
Co. Cory Withers and the After Hours Committee are working hard to keep new and
exciting events coming your way. Great
Job Guys and Thanks Again AEP Texas.
Special thanks to everyone who
participated in or attended the Indoor/
Outdoor Extravaganza. Despite the rainy
weather on Saturday morning, the event
turned out to be a hit. I would like to thank
all of the sponsors, volunteers and committee members who helped us pull it off.
The overall response from the vendors was
positive and gives us great momentum
going into 2017.
I don’t have enough room to talk
about all the cool events that are coming
up in the near future, but I will mention
that we will have our scholarship luncheon
May 5th and we hope you will join us.
To stay up to date on the latest
news and events be sure to like us on Facebook or visit us online at

Tommie Harendt Construction, Inc.
Tommie was born and raised in Abilene. He graduated from Abilene
High in 1973 and Texas Tech University in 1977. She started framing and trimming houses with his Dad in 1978. He decided if he was going to be in construction he wanted to be a builder, so along with his Dad (also Tommie), they
formed Tommie Harendt and Son Construction and built their first house in
1980. He credits his Dad for teaching him the construction part of this business
and a strong work ethic. In 2001 he formed Tommie Harendt Construction, Inc.
which continues today.
Tommie believes everyone owes something back to the industry that
provides them a living, so he has actively supported the building industry over
the past 35 years. He has been on the local Board of Directors since 1983 and
served, for the first time n the Texas Association of Builders State Board, in
1985. In 2006 he was made a life director for TAB and is currently serving as a
HOMEPAC trustee. Some of his other accomplishments include serving as President of the BCHBA four terms, being named Builder of the Year four times and
receiving the Raymond Thomason Award. He has serve on several City of Abilene committees including Abilene Board of Building Standards for twelve
years and as chairman for four years. He has previously served on four code
revue committees and the Flood Review Committee. He is currently on the
Executive Committee for the Taylor County Expo.

Tommie specializes in high end custom homes and is proud of his reputation for honesty and quality of construction, however, his greatest source
of pride is his family. He has been married to Lee Ann for forty years. They
have two daughters and four grandchildren.

For over 50 years, Ingram has been satisfying the concrete needs of thousands of people and projects
in our vast service area. No matter how big or small - from a $250 million dollar industrial facility to a
$250 backyard project – it’s handled with the same degree of importance, expertise and appreciation
from start to finish.
Back in 1963, Ingram began with their first plant in Stephenville, TX. From that single plant we've
grown to more than 40 plants servicing over 60 counties in the western half of Texas. In 2006, Ingram
was acquired by US Concrete and represents the West Texas Region of the largest US-owned ready
mix concrete company in the nation.
Ingram Concrete’s roots in Abilene date back to the early 1950s with Childs Ready Mix and Morris
Ready Mix. In 1986, Ingram Concrete began its long commitment to Abilene and the Big Country. The
reason we've been here so long is because we built a strong foundation for our company based on
customer service and solid relationships, the relentless pursuit of maximum quality, value driven performance and an obligation to sustainability.
Our commitment to quality is what drives our value. At Ingram, concrete is not a commodity product. We use proprietary materials and cutting edge technology to produce, not just performance, but
desired performance. Our capabilities are wide ranging and we design with the best combination of
available local materials to provide a concrete to not only meet specifications, but also your expectations.
We do all of these distinctive and innovative things with our eyes on sustainability. Environmental
responsibility is an important part of who we are. We help projects lower their carbon footprint with
our design methods using our proprietary admixture that we jointly developed with Chryso, our partnering chemical supplier. Concrete can be energy efficient and we prove it every day.
Last, but not least is the true secret to Ingram's long standing presence and growth - our valued employees. We truly believe that the strength of this great company lies within its people and their commitment to Ingram’s vision and safety culture.
Ingram is QUALITY, PERFORMANCE & SUSTAINABILITY.

Thank you AEP for hosting another great HBA After Hours Event. For those of you who couldn’t make it, you
certainly missed a great time. The folks at AEP didn't leave anything out while hosting this Fishin’Fun Tourney.
The food was amazing and the drinks were very “interesting” thanks to Weldon Hurt and his garbage disposal
margarita machine. AEP Texas graciously gave out
door prizes the entire evening and we had more winners than I can name. Congratulations to Weldon Hurt of
Pest Patrol for winning the Grand Prize Yeti Cooler. We THANK each of you were who able to join us and we
especially THANK our new members and visitors who came out to see the real life value in Membership with
the Big Country HBA.

MAY 2016
2016 TAX DEDUCTION
In 1993, the U.S. Congress enacted the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act that contained provisions affecting
trade associations. The Act provided that taxpayers will no longer be able to de-duct from their federal income
taxes any portion of the association dues attributable to that association’s “lobbying activities” as an ordinary
and necessary cost of doing business.
For 2015, NAHB estimates that the non-deductible portion of national dues-the portion that is applicable to lobbying is 11% or $20.02
that will not be eligible as a business expense. For 2015, The Texas Association of Builders estimates that the non-deductible portion
of state dues is 76% or $91.20. For an affiliate member 76% or $20.52 is not deductible as a business expense.
Therefore, the total amount of 2015 state and national dues for a member that is not deductible as a business expense is $111.22, and
for an affiliate member the amount is $20.52.
501(c)6 Organization
The BCHBA is recognized as a 501(c)6 organization and contributions made to a 501(c)6 organization are not tax deductible. Please
