B ACKGROUND :
Nestled like a jewel at the base of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro
lies a place of adventure and romance. This place is called Hatari, it tells of silverscreen glamour, it was the farm of Hardy
Kruger … located on the outskirts of Arusha National Park, in
the vast plains of the African savannah. For Jörg, Marlies and
Donyo Gabriel it is a dream-come-true – or: simply home! By
combining their professional backgrounds and unique talents,
the Gabriels have diligently restored Hatari to its legendary
glory. They created a unique and sophisticated luxury lodge in
which every room has been individually designed and furnished
to reflect the distinct style and history of Hatari. In 2004, the
Gabriels opened the doors of Hatari Lodge, attracting visitors
from around the world. Here they are combining the idyllic setting with the rich history of the place and their own ecological
awareness to create a unique atmosphere that is sure to enthrall
every safari enthusiast.
During the holiday season of 2009 the second mainstay of the
Gabriels was established at the foot of the Kilimanjaro: The
Shu’mata-Camp! The name means “heaven” in the language of
the Maasai whose brilliantly red cloths stand out in the dusty
pastel-colored environment. The camp is heavenly indeed when
you rest in one of the luxurious, spacious tents on the top of
the hill. They are all furnished in a unique combination of Maasai, Hemingway and Arabic styles. Decorations and textures in
natural materials and radiant Maasai colors were designed by
Marlies and crafted in Arusha by the women of the MamaMomella project. When at night the locusts clitter, zebras bay and
hyenas can be heard from afar a Hemingway whiskey near the
open fire will trigger feelings of adventure and romantic safaris
– especially under a full moon, when you look up the slope of
the majestic Kilimanjaro that seems incredibly close, and you
perceive the glistening glaciers near the top.
T HE G ABRIEL F AMILY
Marlies was born in Namibia and began her career as a safari guide. She soon moved on to a camp manager position in
Botswana, then became a product manager for East Africa in
Germany. In 2000, Marlies joined the prestigious Abercrombie
& Kent safari company and moved to Arusha, Tanzania. Responsible for A & K’s Sanctuary Lodges, it was during this time
when Marlies met Jörg. They fell in love and decided to make
their dream of operating a unique safari lodge come true.
Jörg was born in Germany. At the age of two months he moved
with his parents to Uganda, later Ethiopia, then to Northern and
Southern India. He came back to Africa later – first to Kenya,
then Tanzania. As a renowned travel writer, photographer and
safari guide, Jörg has brought his love for the outdoors and his
passion for conservation to Hatari.

Everyone is a part of the team and only as a team we can succeed. Only as an efficient team we can offer our guests an unforgettable stay. Be it chef in the kitchen preparing a delicious meal
for you or the chambermaid decorating your room with a nice
bouquet – every staff member tries to do their best for you. The
lodge is operated by a management team which is supervised by
the owners, Marlies and Jörg. The Hatari team consists of the
following departments: Lodge Management, Lounge, Kitchen,
Housekeeping, Laundry, Garage, Guides, Garden, Security and
Workshop. Each department has the same command structure,
with the head of department providing the link between staff
and management and ensuring that all comply with the rules
and operations run smoothly. Many of the staff members were
born in Momella Village or nearby – they have been part of the
Hatari family for a very long time.
The African Embassy Ltd., the parent company of Hatari Lodge
and the Shu’mata Camp, is an international enterprise. We cater to
international guests and hire international employees. Our middle
management consists of staff members from Germany, Great Britain, Kenya and, of course, Tanzania. So we are able to communicate with everyone here – guests, residents, suppliers and partner
tour operators – be it in Swahili, English or German.
We also welcome trainees and volunteers in our team, if they are
interested in tourism or the African culture and want to gain
new experiences.
Cooperating with our employees generates an interesting exchange of ideas, helping us to develop and conceptualize new
ideas.
The MomellaFoundation was founded by its coordinators, Marlies and Jörg Gabriel, the proprietors of Hatari Lodge in Momella and Shu’mata Camp in the Maasai Steppe. They fulfilled their
dream by creating a luxury safari experience for travelers worldwide, but soone they realized that while their clients are enjoying
the idyllic and stunning Mt Meru region, the local population is
suffered from poverty as well as the lack of educational and vocational training. This is why the Gabriels created the MomellaFoundation – they want to give back to the community that provides their passion, love and livelihood. The MomellaFoundation
is a non-profit organization seeking to aid the region through
various creative programs. Under its umbrella the ten current
individual projects include educational development, sustainable agronomy, waste disposal, natural resource cultivation and
protection, as well as a community center. These were instigated
to develop the region and improve local living conditions. The
foundation’s aim is to root out poverty. The MomellaFoundation
is also run by an international team: European staff are working
together with local people. The MomellaFoundation is also run by

local people. For instance, the WatotoMomella project includes a
European staff member and a local teacher instructing 25 local
children in our own preschool. For these projects the foundation
also seeks to attract trainees or volunteers who are socially committed and want to gain experience in social work.
Though he visited many farms for sale between Kilimanjaro and
the Serengeti, Momella had already won his heart it was the
setting of the “Hatari!” production. By buying Momella Farm,
Hardy Kruger realised a childhood dream – owning a farm, even
if it was in Africa … For over 13 years, Momella was his beloved
home, and his children were raised there. His son, actor Hardy
Junior, spent five years of his adventurous childhood at the foot
of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro.
In 1961, following a suggestion of the then Prime Minister,
Nyerere, who later became President, Kruger’s “Bush Hotel” was
built on the farm where “Hatari!” had been filmed. This hotel,
small, quiet and peaceful, soon turned out to be a good investment.
Following the construction of Kilimanjaro International Airport
an increasing number of European travellers visited Tanzania.
The German charter service Atlantis Air not only brought numerous German visitors to northern Tanzania, but also invested
in Kruger’s lodge which was consequently upgraded. The number of guests increased steadily, and soon there was demand for
more beds. Ikoma Lodge in the Western Serengeti, an old German colonial building; the original Ngorongoro Crater Lodge;
and Momella became important stops for safari travelers in
Tanzania. But at the same time, Hardy Kruger also invested in
the development of his farm. He built the most modern meat
processing plant in Tanzania, and all the necessary equipment
for the production of sausages were imported from Germany.
He even hired a German butcher.
In the early 1970s, however, Kruger was frustrated by Nyerere’s
socialist reforms and the nationalisation of private companies
and farms: heartbroken, he abandoned the dream he had realised
in Africa. He returned to Germany and later moved to the United States. In the 1980s and 1990s, his TV programme, “Weltenbummler,” and three books about his life’s adventures, were hugely successful in Germany. More books and films were to follow.
Kruger’s farm was eventually nationalised and fell into ruin.
The modern meat processing plant was no longer serviced, then
abandoned and sold to the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority.
Today, the plant ruins, with its cooling houses and its butchery,
emanate a ghostly atmosphere. At night the cooling room doors,
manufactured in Saarbrücken, are creaking; the children of the
game ranger families living in the rooms and halls, playfully
manipulated with the levers and switches. But they have never
heard of “Mr Hardy.”
Guests of the Hatari Lodge are welcome to visit the old meat
processing plant as well as tour Kruger’s former farm.

In 1960, Howard Hawks came to Tanganyika (as it was called
then) to produce and direct the Hollywood classic, “Hatari!” The
young Hardy Kruger starred with John Wayne, both portrayed
members of a professional team catching wild animals for zoos.

K ILIMANJARO S AFARI C IRCUIT
The many months of filming “Hatari!” led to a detour in Hardy
Kruger’s promising Hollywood career because he decided to
settle in Africa. He fell in love with the continent and he used
each free day during filming to look at farms he might purchase.
In combination with the Hatari Lodge we recommend a twonight safari stay at our Shu’mata Camp, which is part of our
Kilimanjaro Safari Circuit – a three, five or seven day program
in and around Hatari Lodge and Shu’mata Camp with various,
breathtaking activities in these two truly fascinating and totally
different environments:
Momella – a sleepy village at the foot of old Mount Meru,where buffalo and giraffe eat their way through thicket every day. Hatari – a
place of harmony with nature, where peace and silence reign against
the background of an orange-purple rising sun. We wake up in a cozy
room, take a hot shower in the morning, get into a jeep, begin our
way through forests, lush and green, but later dusty roads. The voices
of exotic birds, a snake that slips in silence from the branch of an acacia tree. The tracks of elephant, until we face a huge old tusker while
mongoose hurry through the sand. Majestically rises the snow-capped
top of Africa‘s lone giant, Kilimanjaro – plunged in orange-mauwe.
(…) Sitting around a warming fire, we listen to the tales of times
long past, enjoying culinary pleasures, retreat into a comfortable tent,
hyena laughing us into sound sleep.

giraffes can be spotted on a regular basis as well as the occasional
elephant. This highest viewpoint on the crater rim also offers a
magnificent view of the Momella Lakes and the entire Hatari
country. Following a picnic on the crater rim in the warm midday sun the trip continues to Ngongongare Springs right at the
heart of the national park, past clearings offering a plethora of
wildlife including several primate species as well as the swampy
habitats of rhinos and buffualo, ending back at Hatari Lodge in
time for a tasty cup of Tanzanian coffie and cake.

DAY ACTIVITIES
M OMELLA L AKES
We take off to Arusha National Park and the Momella Lakes
– an accumulation of seven volcanic lakes, embedded in the
breathtaking planes at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Flamingos can be
seen spreading their wings and soaring gracefully into the open
sky above hippos and giraffes. Bushbucks, Dikdiks and Sunis
can be observed shyly looking out from the thicket of long grasses in the vast savannah. From the viewpoint of “Boma la Megi”
you can enjoy, weather permitting, an absolutely unforgettable
view of Kilimanjaro and a sun-highlighted Mount Meru.
DAY ACTIVITIES
M OUNT M ERU C RATER T OUR
H ATARI ! H ISTORICAL T OUR
Though often ignored in favor of its bigger sister Kilimanjaro,
Mount Meru is a worthy trekker’s paradise. This massive volcano
endured a violent explosion at an estimated 200 million years
ago, and in its wake the explosion left towering cliffs in a gaping U-shaped ridge facing east towards Kilimanjaro. Its craggy
top lies at the westernmost point of the summit ridge at 4566
m. What makes this trek truly special is the chance to see animals on foot. The lower section, which we reach with an open
topped safari jeep, runs into the forest on the Meru crater floor
with many large, potentially dangerous game animals about. An
armed ranger comes along on this trek for safety.
On the way up, one passes through three different vegetation
zones, starting from savannah, through forest and into dense jungle, reminiscent of landscapes in the movie “Lord of the
Rings.” Upon reaching Kitoto view point, altitude 2500m, our
armed ranger provides an escort on the final hike up and into
the crater floor. This takes a couple of hours. Return to the vehicle and head downhill to a spot next to a picturesque waterfall
where a traditional picnic lunch replenishes burnt energy amidst
spectacular views of rolling plains and Mt. Kilimanjaro looming
in the background. Further down, another short walk leads to
the Tululusia Waterfall, cascading down and soaking those who
venture too close to the foot of it.
We return to Hatari exhausted but in time for evening coffee
and cake!
The history of Mt Meru is ancient. Momella has been part of it
for the last 100 years. In 1906 Margarete Trappe arrived on an ox
wagon from the coast. Her courage and pioneering spirit set the
tone when they travelled the picturesque Meru-Pass, at which
her new home – Momella – was situated. A big farm was created
and built by the Trappe family where they kept cattle, horses and
goats and enjoyed the surroundings and the abundant wildlife.
The start of the First World War brought a cat-and-mouse game
between Margarete Trappe and the English soldiers and earned
her the nickname Iron Lady for her stubbornness, strength and
courage as she scouted for Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck in his “Ice
Cream War” with Frederick Courtney Selous. However fate was
not kind to Margarete. Disowned and bankrupt she returned to
Meru and started rebuilding a new farm called Ngongongare or
Yejo’s - her Maasai name. Financial survival was however finally
secured by highly profitable trophy hunting after she became
the first female professional hunter in East Africa. Fittingly her
last tribute was from her beloved elephant herd as they gathered
around her house in 1957 when she passed away. With the Hatari! Historical Tour you follow the traces of Margarete Trappe and
visit her former house and her grave in the Arusha National Park.
N GURDOTO C RATER
Following a cozy breakfast we start our extraordinary game drive
in Arusha National Park to Ngurdoto Crater and “Rock” viewpoint where you will have excellent views over the “little Ngorongoro Crater” and to the Mt. Meru rock formations illuminated by the morning sun. Within the crater, buffalo, warthog and
C ANOEING
To discover the Momella Lakes by sturdy Canadian canoes is one of the highlights of the Hatari safaris. Gliding softly
through the water is a very nice feeling, because you are getting
a different kind of view. You drive past flamingos, buffalos and
always in eye contact with spluttering hippos. Accompanied by
guides, you paddle through a very different world and experience
the beauty of this landscape. According to your wishes and subject to season we can plan two-hour or whole-day excursions
for you.
T ULULUSIA W ALK
This walk allows you to experience Arusha National Park with
all its wonders up close and personal! A guided walk with a ranger to Tululusia waterfalls, close to the Momella Gate, will take
you to a buffalo meadow where these formidable giants can be
observed at arm’s length.
V ILLAGE W ALK
Come with us to the neighbouring Meru village of Momella and
experience the “rural life” of Tanzania. Follow in the footsteps
of Margarete Trappe and Hardy Kruger and visit the old meat
factory and the environment surrounding the Momella Lodge.
This walk will also aid you in your understanding of the MomellaFoundation as well as its achievements such as the recently
opened WatotoMomella preschool which currently caters for 25
students who are sure to give you a warm welcome!
G ENERAL I NFORMATION
S T YLE
AND COMFORT
Hatari Lodge consists of three buildings beautifully situated
within acacia woodland allowing excellent views over the Momella meadow, rich with wildlife, and across to majestic Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. The oldest building serves as a large
central living and dining room. Here you will find a comfortable
relaxation and dining area. Sitting around the open fireplace,
which Kruger and Mallory enjoyed so much, we entertain guests
with inside information on the flora, fauna and history of Arusha National Park.
Meals are being served here. Enjoy the freshly prepared dishes
of international modern cuisine. There is also a long bar, which
can be accessed from both inside and out, as well as a small,
but informative library. The breakfast terrace, bordered by sweet
smelling acacias, offers impressive views of Mt. Meru and Kilimanjaro. Directly below the terrace lies the Momella clearing,
which can also be reached via a boardwalk. A viewing platform
offers the opportunity to watch the animals at close range, and to
enjoy classic sundowners, with Kilimanjaro in the background.
Buffaloes and waterbuck feed here regularly and warthogs can
be seen digging around in the ground or mowing the lawn while
waterbirds enjoy the swampy areas and numerous giraffes including the rare reticulated giraffes feed on the trees surrounding
the lodge. Bush babies are also a common sight at night throughout the year and there is a small lake within walking distance,
called Silver Lake, where Hippos can be found.
Hatari offers comfortably furnished rooms, each with an open
fireplace and a spacious ensuite bathroom. Each room has been
lovingly furnished and decorated by Marlies in the modern retro
style, as a tribute to the 60s and 70s – the time of the “Hatari!”
movie as well as the beginning of safaris in Tanzania.

We call it MODERN RETRO! The style of the 50s, 60s and
70s – of “Hatari!” combined with Tanzania’s natural fabrics.
All decorative items have been designed and crafted on our
premises. The wallpaper in 70s style were created by Remmy
Macha, our artist here at Hatari Lodge. The mint green ceramics and wash basins are made by Seamic in Dar es Salaam. The
retro beddings are made by our very own MamaMomella, one of
the MomellaFoundation projects, supervised by Marlies (see projects). The beddings consist of typical Tanzanian materials and
are sewn and embroidered by the women of the village nearby.
These beddings, as well as numerous other items of clothing,
jewellery and souvenirs can be viewed and bought from the
MamaMomella shop. The colorful woolen carpets are made by a
women’s cooperative in Kenia; our sisal carpets are produced in a
church-based sheltered workshop in the Umsambara mountains
and the wooden art-deco furniture are especially produced for us
by Domus carpentry in Dar Es Salaam.
A special treat are the “ethic trophies” on the walls of the lounge
and in the rooms, providing the lamp light. They preserve the
beauty of animals without them having to die. This way Hatari combines the tradition of big game hunters who were the
early tourists in Africa with modern wildlife preservation standards. These “ethic trophies” have been designed by Marlies and
Remmy, they are created by using wire and thin leather. These
lamp shades as well as other artwork can also be ordered, please
check with our staff.
It’s fun, it’s funky, it’s trendy, it’s Hatari! The film, the area, the
setting! Dangerous, adventurous and very romantic!
L OCAL
PRODUCTS
Arbor Oils of Africa has developed an original range of body care
products from wild harvested plant ingredients of the African
bush and forest. The oils and perfumes are traditional African
beauty products and the sustainable collection is an important
source of supplementary income for many of the rural people.
You are very welcome to use the products while staying in the
lodge. If you like to buy the oils, you may find them at the shop
along with many other beautiful items, clothing, jewelry and
souvenirs.
E NTERTAINMENT
Hatari Lodge is famous for its special atmosphere and mood which
is only enhanced by a number of unique occurrences such as our
magical sundowners on our wildlife walkway after a day’s activity.
Enjoy a cool gin tonic or an Amarula while the bonfire is flickering
and buffalo, giraffes and warthogs gatjer at the waterhole. Particularly cozy evenings are provided by our cinema screenings in
the library. Upon your request, we show “Hatari!” or other films
depicting Momella, Hatari, Tanzania or Africa. If you would like
to celebrate your birthday or any other special occasion here at Hatari we would be only too delighted to organize an unforgettable
evening for you. Our artist, Remmy, makes the most extraordinary
cakes and our staff celebrate with traditional songs and dance. For
the once-in-a-lifetime-experience we organize the Momella choir,
an enchanting experience that will leave you feeling breathless
S ECURIT Y
Hatari is situated on the perimeter of the Arusha National Park
and is not fenced in. The rule is that all wild animals have right
of way.
Under no circumstances walk around alone at night.
From 18h00 till 06h00 watchmen will be available to escort you
from your room to the main lounge and back. Please wait at
your room door for one of the guards to escort you, and when
you leave the main lounge make sure a watchman is at the door.
There is a flash light in your room if you need to attract attention. Please consult the management if you would like to go for
a walk during the day.
Never leave the premises on your own – the same rule applies to
our camp. Please consult the management for safekeeping of valubles. Recommendation: Do not leave valuables, money, travel
documents, cameras, etc lying around in the room. All items of
value should be carried with you or locked away in your suitcase
We kindly ask you to support us and, more importantly, the environment around us, so that we can ensure the protection of this
beautiful area. Many thanks for your assistance!
W ASTE
Please do not throw any litter (including cigarettes) on the
ground both inside and outside the national park. Litter is dangerous for the wild animals and damages the sensitive ecosystem. Please use the provided rubbish bins or take the rubbish
back to the lodge for proper disposal.
E LECTRICIT Y
Since we do not have mains electricity in this region, we use a
generator to provide electricity in the lodge. The generator runs
from 06:30 am to 10:00 am and from 17:30 pm up to 23:00 pm.
Each room also has an energy saving hairdryer in the bathroom,
and we ask you to please use this rather than your own dryer as
a measure of energy conservation. Recharging your cellphone
and camera batteries is no problem. Some European plugs will
fit the sockets in our rooms. If yours don’t you can recharge your
batteries in the lounge or office. Unfortunately we cannot provide adapters!
L AUNDRY & H OUSEKEEPING
W ILD A NIMALS
Hatari is dedicated to nature conservancy and the utmost preservation of natural resources of animals.
Do not feed any of the animals that wander through the lodge,
especially the monkeys and the birds. They are wild animals, and
we must not intrude in their habitat. Feeding them would unbalance and change their way of life.
We reserve the right to exclude guests from excursions if they
disregard this rule.
We would like to point out that during the night vervet monkeys like to bustle about the roofs of our rooms. These nocturnal
mammals often utter strange cries – just like the bushbabies.
This is no reason for your concern as these cries a natural feature
of local East-African background noise.
W ATER
Please do NOT drink the tab water in the lodge. There is always
mineral water provided in you room by the sink, at the bar, as
well as during all meal- and activity times. Please use this mineral water for drinking and brushin your teeth. The tab water
comes from a spring in the mountains and is absolutely fine for
showering and bathing.
Hot water is available during the entire day, even if the generator is switched off. Please leave the hot water switch in your
bathroom switched on at all times.
Tanzania is, like many African countries, a country where water
is scarce. The area around Mount Meru has various volcanic
springs and is therefore a water-spoiled area compared to other
regions. Nonetheless, there is no abundance so please use it responsibly and economically.
Our guest rooms are cleaned daily.
We offer laundry service at a modest price. A laundry basket and
laundry-list can be found in your bathroom.
Please do not do your own laundry in your room, or use the
furniture, outside chairs or bushes to hang your clothes to dry.
Hatari Lodge emphasizes and supports environment protection.
We therefore do our best to keep the amount of laundry limited
and it is our policy not to change towels on a daily basis. However, should you require a replacement towel please leave your
towel(s) on the floor.
S MOKING
In general, smoking is permitted everywhere except in your
room and on game drives. Please don’t smoke in these places.
In front of your room you will find a place to sit and an ashtray.
Out of consideration to your fellow travelers please limit your
smoking on drives to rest periods or stops.
I N CASE
OF FIRE AND EVACUATION
In case of uncontrolled fire, please leave the room instantly, because of the flammability of the furniture. Use the paths and
move to the main lounge. If the fire spreads across the paths or
to the main lounge, look for a place close to water or on higher
ground without grass. Please inform your children about these
safety precautions.
H EALTH
Hatari is located at an elevation of 1600m, in an all-year-around
green environment, making the risk of malaria very low. Malaria
is also uncommon in our Shu’mata Camp yet we still recommend
the use of insect repellents. To be safe, we also recommend the
use of a Malaria prophylaxis.
Before coming to Tanzania, we recommend you to visit a dentist
since qualified dental care or treatment may prove unavailable.
Medical care is available in the bigger cities but at a low standard. Nationwide, there is a risk of diarrhea infection caused by
unclean drinking water and food items, drinking from the tap
and by handling dirty banknotes or even handshaking. Regular
hand washing is therefore advised. If at any stage you experience
diarrhea, remember to replenish the loss of fluids by drinking
large quantities of water to avoid any further risk of dehydration.
Any medical bills must be settled immediately in cash. Refunds
may be possible if covered by your personal insurance.

R ECOMMENDED
VACCINATIONS
There are currently no mandatory vaccinations for entry into
Tanzania if you are flying directly from Europe. However, the
following are advised: Yellow fever, Hepatitis A&B, and Typhoid (prophylactic prevention of Salmonella).
We strongly advise you to personally discuss your trip with an

In an emergency, please call for help. We have a basic first aid kit
available in the reception area but may not have qualified first
aid personnel available immediately. We have contacts with local
doctors who, if available, will take approx. 60 minutes to reach
the lodge.

C UISINE
Our philosophy is to serve international cuisine with African
ingredients in a fresh and healthy manner.
For the early morning wake up call you can enjoy a hot beverage
(coffee, tea or hot chocolate).
Our breakfast buffet comprises of:
- A variety of sausage and cheeses, different types of marmalade
and acacia honey from Tanzania
- Freshly baked bread rolls, whole meal yeast bread and banana
nut bread
- Yoghurt, milk, homemade honey roasted muesli with local
nuts and seeds
- Eggs prepared to your liking
- A breakfast special that we change daily, such as crépes, whaffles etc.
For lunch we serve a salad or a soup for starters, a light, often
vegetarian main course and a refreshing dessert.
During the afternoon tea you always enjoy a freshly baked cake.
The dinner at Hatari is the highlight of the day. It is our tradition to share a big table where all of our guests coming together,
relating their experiences of the day, and – of course – enjoying
a delicious meal. If you would like to eat at a private table – no
problem! We will be happy to set up a separate table. Our menu
is ceremonial and changes daily.
If you have any dietary requests, please let us know upon arrival.
Game is not on the Hatari menu for wildlife conservancy reasons. Tansanian authorities strictly control menus offering game.
Special licences must be procured before offering this kind of
meat. For late arrivals, we provide a light dinner, consisting of
starters and a main course.
Our picnic lunch for full day activities is traditionally transported
in an English picnic basket and served in exceptional picnic areas.
Enjoy two refreshing salads with fresh rolls, a savory snack e. g.
ground meat pie, hamburger, samosas), muffins accompanied by
fruit juices, coffee tea and mineral water.
Upon departure you may take a lunchbox away. This service is
either included in you tour package or to be charged upon de
parture. This lunchbox includes a hamburger, chicken drumstick
or shish kebab, a small serving of potato chips or beef jerky (Biltong), a small chocolate bar and a piece of fruit.
B AR & D RINKS
Mineral water in the rooms, during meals and excursions as well
as coffee and/or tea during meals and in the afternoon are included.
All alcoholic and soft drinks served during meals and at any
other time are not included and need to be paid for separately.
Please kindly ensure your orders for drinks are properly noted
and that you sign for them.
A small but exclusive selection of white & red wines from South
Africa can be purchased from the bar. Please consult the waiters,
or let the menu displayed at the bar inspire you.

Hatari takes conservation very seriously. We kindly request you
to help us in the following ways:
a) Do not disturb or feed the wildlife.
b) Do not pollute the environment.
c) Do not smoke in the rooms. Use the smoking area provided
as mentioned above.
d) Do not take any plants or flowers out of the area.
e) Walk only on designated paths.
f ) Minimize the use of water.
g) Minimize the use of solar lights by switching them off
whenever possible.
h) Respect our staff and local cultures.
T RANSFER
Hatari Lodge offers all airport transfers.
Please double check the departure times of your flights and
reconfirm with the management.

We accept US Dollar, Euros and Tanzania Shillings. And very
soon we will implement a non-cash payment system and payment by credit card will be possible.

G AME A CTIVITIES + I NDEMNIT Y
All activities will commence in the lounge of the main building
of the lodge. All participants are asked to arrive on time – they
will be picked up by a guide. Expenses for all excursions and
activities have to be settled with the Hatari staff except those
prepaid or included in your travel arrangements. All activities are subject to availabitlity and current weather conditions.
Lodge management reserves the right to cancel activities at their
discretion and without prior announcement.
D RESS C ODE
Hatari is an exclusive lodge. To respect every culture of the area,
we kindly ask you to follow the following dressing rules:
No bikinis, mini dresses or skirts or skin-exposing clothing.
Never walk around without a shirt. We kindly request decent
clothing for the meal times.
R ECOMMENDED C LOTHING
T IPPING
Should you feel that our staff went out of their way or met/exceeded your expectations and would like to tip them, it will be gratefully accepted and best done at the end of your stay when you clear
your bill. You can leave your tip with the waiter who will note the
sum in the tipping record, and we ask you to sign for it – this will
warrant that tips will be dispensed equally among all employees.
We recommend about 10 USD per guest/ room per night.
Your driver guides and drivers should receive their tip separately
– preferably at the end of your tour.
We recommend about 10 USD per day/tour as well. Please note
that external national park rangers accompanying on your Mt.
Mero tour, for instance, are not part of our internal lodge tipping system. Acknowledgment of these services should be made
separately.

The MomellaFoundation was founded by its coordinators, Marlies
and Jörg Gabriel, the proprietors of Hatari Lodge in Momella
and Shu’mata Camp in the Maasai Steppe. They fulfilled their
dream by creating a luxury safari experience for travelers worldwide, but they soon realized that while they and their clients
enjoyed the idyllic and stunning Mt Meru region, the local population suffered from poverty as well as insufficient educational
and vocational training opportunities. That is why the Gabriels
created the MomellaFoundation – in order to give back to the
community which in turn provides the source of their passion,
love and livelihood. The MomellaFoundation is a non-profit organization seeking to aid the region through various creative programs. Under its umbrella the three current individual projects
include educational development, sustainable agronomy, waste
disposal, natural resource cultivation and protection, as well as a
community center and an income for women through creativity.
These are set up in order to develop the region and improve local
living conditions.
The principal goal is awareness through education and comfort
through the individual income.

The Maria Montessori tutorial method is used in teaching 21
local children, helping them develop their bilingual (Swahili
and English) skills in a child-friendly preschool / kindergarten.
WatotoMomella is also developing a small orphanage which
will be the home and family of seven orphaned children.
Preschool and kindergarten facilities are used in afternoons and
evenings for educational and recreational activities for young
and old. The project also intends to establish a functional public
garbage disposal system and to provide clean water for the villagers, as there is a high and damaging fluoride content in the
water of the Mt Meru region.
O UR PROJECTS IN M OMELLA : E DUCATION ,
C ONSERVATION & W OMEN E MPOWERMENT
The professional and advanced training of permaculture for
small-scale farmers.
Here in the buffer zone between Arusha National Park and cultivated village farms, strictly controlled land use will be permitted for touristism purposes of Hatari Lodge. Efforts are made to
reduce woodcutting and livestock grazing, to reduce poaching to
zero, while at the same time locals should realize that they can
earn a living through protecting wildlife and their ecosystem.
Sinya Elephant Patrol und Big Cat Guardians Project aim to
ensure the natural habitat of elephants and big cats in the 700
squarekilometers of the Sinya-Region as part of the AmboseliEcosystem. We aim to achieve this especially by educating local
elephant patrollers and lion guardians, through provision of logistics and modern communication technologies and through
the enhancement of public awareness.
Local women get a chance to generate their own income by utilizing their sewing, stitching and creative skills and creating valuable textiles, which combine tradition and modernity.
