The state of the arts in our country has reached a very crucial period. With budget cuts
due to the economy and political influences, the arts are being crowded out and neglected in our
schools, businesses and communities. The Jazz Legacy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been founded to help make an impact in improving the current status of the arts
in our community and our country, in particular music, and the genre of Jazz, America’s only
true original art form.
It is the mission of the Jazz Legacy Foundation to transform young lives through charitable support by way of educational scholarships, creative arts, leadership development, mentoring workshops, and community partnerships, all with the aspirations of enhancing the appreciation and preservation of Jazz. The initial goal is to support the music departments in our public schools by subsidizing the musical departments with the purchase of needed equipment. We
will also create and conduct workshops, mentoring programs with master musicians, and offer
educational scholarships to further musical endeavors and development. To achieve our goals,
Jazz Legacy Foundation Inc. will accept donations, raise funds from individuals, businesses,
organizations, and entertainment as a charitable cause in order to support our mission. As a result of our 2013 inaugural fundraising gala we were very proud to present a sizable donation to
the Portsmouth Schools Foundation followed by generous donations since then to the Norfolk
Portsmouth, and now Hampton Public Schools Foundations. We have also presented scholarships, honored music educators, and held extraordinary workshops for the music students with
world renowned jazz artists like violinist Karen Briggs, saxophonist Jackiem Joyner, and trombonist/keyboardist Brian Culbertson.
On November 10th through 13th 2016, the Jazz Legacy Foundation will present the 4th
Annual Fundraising Gala to support its mission. The gala will be held at the Hampton Roads
Convention Center in Hampton, VA. This 4 day event will feature a tremendous line up of
Grammy award winning and chart topping Jazz talent including Najee, Walter Beasley, Pieces
of a Dream, Kim Waters, Sheila E., Lalah Hathaway, Will Downing, Phil Perry, Deniece
Williams, Marion Meadows, Jonathan Fritzen, Vincent Ingala, Euge Groove, Nick Colionne, Eric Darius, and many mor e! This year , we will also host a fr ee event on November
9th showcasing the Jazz music programs of the schools we have supported, followed by a free
concert by “In Gratitude”- an Earth Wind & Fire tribute band. Everyone should enjoy this live
musical experience.
There will be silent auctions, surprises, national and local celebrities. Our past years
events have been a great success, and we hope to continue that tradition. We hope that you will

Program Goals
Scholarships for Success
Jazz Legacy Foundation Inc. will strive to award scholarships in order to increase
the opportunities for jazz appreciation and music education with a goal to affect
the lives, aspiration and dreams of talented students.
Master Class Mentoring
Master Class Mentoring by artists surrounding our jazz events. In cases where it is
possible we will pair up master jazz musicians with students in order to encourage the appreciation and love of Jazz.
Next Level Workshops
Jazz Legacy Foundation Inc. will offer workshops that will be conducted by various professionals in the music industry. We will strive to forge an introduction to
jazz, and enhance the knowledge and business of jazz.
Instruments for Change
Providing Musical instruments, supplies and services to music students, aspiring
jazz musicians and music programs, that would not otherwise be able to afford
them.
Community Partnerships
Jazz Legacy Foundation Inc. hopes to forge community partnerships to encourage
and preserve, and promote the love of jazz.
Music is an important part our children's education. It is a proven fact that music and arts education improves overall academic performance in our youth. In our first three years, 2013 –2015, the Jazz Legacy Foundation was able to generously
donate to the Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Hampton Public Schools, providing workshops, program support, funds for scholarships, and the purchase of much needed musical equipment and materials. Our goal is to continue to provide support by
way of our programs goals throughout our communities and region with a commitment to keep the interest an the love of
jazz alive. With your help we can increase giving and expand programs.

only original art form, “Jazz” The Jazz Legacy Foundation’s Fourth Annual Fundraising Gala will be
