It is the third year in a row that Pius X has placed 1st in the annual drive to collect the most food in southeast Nebraska.
Students from nine high schools in and around Lincoln spent
five weeks gathering thousands of pounds of food for Lincoln’s
hungry. In Lincoln, all six public high schools, plus Pius X,
Parkview Christian, and Lincoln Lutheran participated along
with Freeman High School in Adams and Malcolm High School.
In all, the drive collected 41,102 pounds of food. The schools
that participated were both big and small. Pius X raised 14,041
pounds, the most among participating schools with more than
900 students. Lincoln Lutheran won Division B. Pius senior

Pictured left to right: Pius X Student Council Members Ellie Staab and Makayla Krings receiving the $1,000 check from Casey Milton of the Food Bank
of Lincoln.
The drive collected the food for the Food Bank of Lincoln,
which was distributed to agencies and families in its 16-county
service area. Pius X’s collected food was donated to Catholic
Social Services.
Supported by family and friends, the Student Council planned
promotional events, organized food collections, packaged and
delivered food. Total pounds collected: St. Peter’s, 973, Cathedral, over 1,700, and St. Joseph’s Diederich God teens almost
500 which was added to the Pius total. Junior Student Council
members organized a competition between Mr. Krier’s choir
groups. The girls were victorious in a boys vs. girls contest. Donations of chicken from Smart Chicken and frozen beef from
Certified Piedmontese were appreciated. Pius was the winner of
a new “Canned Sculpture” contest. Students created a Minion
from the movie Despicable Me and a banner proclaiming
“Hunger is Despicable.”
Organizers, supporters, and donors received something in returnthe reward of being able to help their community. The 14,041
pounds of food will provide 11,700 meals to the Lincoln area’s
needy families. Special thanks to all who participated. It couldn’t have been done without the wonderful staff, students, parents, and friends of Pius X.

writer, and evangelist, and is the founder of Real Life Catholic

Tara Soukup Wins First Place in
Statewide Pro-Life Essay Contest
Pius X junior Tara Soukup received first
place honors in a statewide pro-life essay
writing contest sponsored by the Bishops’

mit a 300-400 word essay. The theme of the
contest was, “A close friend has just told you that she is planning to have an abortion. Explain how you would try to discourage her from having the abortion and let her child continue to
live.”
Soukup’s piece was written her sophomore year at which time
she won first place amongst 10th graders in the Diocese of Lincoln. In May 2015, she was honored at an awards dinner with
Bishop James Conley. Her essay, along with other first place
winners, was automatically forwarded on to the state contest.
At the state level, Tara’s essay was selected among first place

based on the entry’s understanding of the pro-life message, clarity in communicating this message, and creativity and originality.

40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil - submitted by Molly Milana On Monday, November 2, Pius
X High School and the UNL
Newman Center ended the 40
Days for Life (September 23-November 1) with a candlelight
prayer vigil and walk. Students walked from St. Peter’s Church
to Planned Parenthood carrying candles and praying for the end
to abortion. The vigil ended in front of the abortion facility with
more prayers and hymns.
We are proud to reveal these new additions to our gymnasium.
We are honored to show our respect for God, country, and those
who came before us, making Pius X possible. The historians in
our crowd might be interested to know the first Catholic school
state championship in Lincoln was a 21-15 victory on the hardwood over Utica in 1923.

Chemistry Classes Celebrate Mole Day
- submitted by Mikala Bradley & Kristin Wiedel -
Courtesy of Mikala Bradley
Courtesy of Mikala Bradley
Students in Mrs. Bradley's, Mr. Cox's, Ms. Kopf's, and Mrs.
Wiedel’s Chemistry classes celebrated Mole Day on Friday,
October 23rd. Students had the opportunity to make stuffed
moles, create and eat mole themed treats, play mole games, and
learn about the importance of the mole (6.02 x 1023) in Chemistry.
Courtesy of Kristin Wiedel
Mole Day is celebrated world-wide 6:02 a.m. until 6:02 p.m. on
October 23rd each year and commemorates Avogadro's Number
(6.02 x 1023) which is a basic measuring unit in Chemistry. For a
given molecule, one mole is a mass (in grams) whose number is
equal to the molar mass of the molecule. For example, the water
molecule has an molar mass of 18, therefore one mole of water
weighs 18 grams. Similarly, a mole of neon has a molar mass of
20 grams. In general, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro's Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. This
relationship was first discovered by Amadeo Avogadro (17761858) and he received credit for this after his death.

Spanish Classes Honor The Departed
- submitted by Tracy Chapelle -
Spanish 1 - Skeletons

Spanish 4 - Papel Picado
Courtesy of Tracy Chapelle
It is a custom every year to learn about the Mexican holiday of
Day of the Dead in all Spanish classes. Each level has an activity that teaches the students something new about Day of the
Dead and they also do a craft project:
 Spanish 1 classes made skeletons under the guidance of their
instructors Karen Bonkiewicz, Kim Lepper, Magali Napier, and
Madelyn McGowan. Skeletons are often seen in many Day of
the Dead celebrations and are a representation of the departed.
The skeletons were displayed in the classroom and hallways.
Spanish 2 - Coffins
Courtesy of Tracy Chapelle
 Spanish 2 classes, under the guidance of their instructors Karen Bonkiewicz, Kim Lepper, and Magali Napier, made coffins
in which the clay head pops out of a hole. It is a way of mocking
death, symbolizing that death doesn’t have a hold over the deceased.

Spanish 3 classes made masks under the guidance of their
instructors Tracy Chapelle, Katie Hayes, and Madelyn McGowan. Masks are often seen in many Day of the Dead celebrations
and are a representation of the departed. The masks were displayed in the classroom and hallways.
 Spanish 4 classes made papel picado under the guidance of
their instructors Tracy Chapelle and Katie Hayes. Papel picado
is the art of paper cutting into intricate designs. The Spanish 4
students divided in groups of three and traced their chosen design on their paper. In class, the students used X-acto knives
borrowed from the Art Department to cut out the traced pattern.
The many papel picados were hung throughout the school.
Spanish 3 - Masks

Spanish 4 - Papel Picado

 Spanish 4 classes also conducted a prayer service that honored
their deceased family members and friends. Students wrote poems and essays to honor their loved ones. The altar was decorated with the Bread of the Dead that the students made. Pan de
muerto, also known as Bread of the Dead or Dead Man's Bread,
is a traditional Mexican sweet bread that is eaten during the Day
of the Dead. It is a symbol of the holiday, like Candy Canes at
Christmas.
Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other
cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends
to pray for and remember friends and family members who have
died. The celebration usually takes place on November 1 (All
Saints Day) and November 2 (All Souls Day). It is celebrated to
welcome the souls of the departed back to earth to be with loved
ones.

Pius X’s 2015 Marching Band season culminated in a Division 2
Excellent rating at the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association
(NSBA) State Marching Festival held on Saturday, October 24,
at Seacrest Field in Lincoln. They received the highest point
total of the year.

In the month of October, the Pius X Marching Band & Color
Guard competed at three marching contests and State competition held in Lincoln. The show titled Joy featured three songs:
American Barndance, The Promise of Living, and Joy.
Courtesy of Yearbook
The band consistently improved their score from the Links
Marching Festival on Saturday, October 10, to the October 24th
State Marching Festival. Judges rate the bands based on individual music performance, ensemble musical performance, individual visual performance, ensemble visual performance, visual
general effect and music general effect. The Pius X Marching
Band received a Division 2 Excellent rating at each competition.
They gained over 15 points, leaving just three points shy of a
Division 1 rating at State. The State Marching Festival and
Competition is divided into three locations across the state. Pius
X Marching Band members were among the almost 6,000 students representing 60 Nebraska high schools competing at the
festival.
“The band is maintaining its new larger size in the last couple
years. The band is about 40% larger than it was 5 years ago and
the color guard has doubled in size.” Band Director Jared Wilhelm notes. “The band students worked very hard on the most
challenging show I have ever attempted with a marching band. I
was really impressed with the end result. We have gotten a lot of
wonderful comments about the show and how well our students
performed. I am proud of their development this season.”
Mr. Wilhelm had a brand new team assisting him this year. His
assistants are Megan Burkle and Chad Houk with Logan Herring
and Maura Gillan as section coaches.
The Marching Band’s next performance will be the Christmas
Concert on Sunday, December 13, at 2 p.m. in the Bishop Flavin
Gym at Pius X High School.

On Monday, November 9,
Coach Aylward, who played for Aldrich in high school and succeeded him later as Head Football Coach, informed his team that
he was stepping down after 31 years. Aylward leaves the position after posting a 7-4 record this season in which the team advanced to the state quarterfinal playoffs. There are currently no
plans for his replacement. Aylward will continue in his role at
Pius X as Activities Director.
As Pius X’s Head Football Coach, Aylward posts a 204-111
record (.647 winning percentage), led the Thunderbolts to the
playoffs 22 times, and won four state championships (1995,
1997, 1998, and 2004).

A “TINI” Fact
If you buy snacks and leave them on your counter you are bound
to eat more than if they are hidden away in your pantry.

- submitted by Tini Van-Oehlertz, M.S., R.D. Expect at least 3 megatrends to hang around
for another year. Roughly three out of four
Chefs’ Council respondents say they will
voluntarily add healthier comfort food, more
plant-based dishes, and customization to the
menu.
Plant foods will grow in creativity as the Know-Your-Farmer
program continues where local and seasonal produce is prominent, grains are included with greens, and vegetables are used in
place of rice, pasta, and potatoes. For example: grated cauliflower for rice, zucchini ribbons for noodles, and celery roots for
potatoes.
The top 10 cuisines that will take off: Angolan, Appalachian,
Brazilian, Cuban, Indian, Mexiroccan (Mexican/Moroccan),
Peruvian, Russian, South African Barbecue, and Tunesian.
Items to try in 2016: Adobo , Asian Carp, Curry Paste, Dragon
Fruit, Duck Wings, Fiddlehead Ferns, Jackfruit, Microgreens,
Persimmons, Pressed Lemons, Red Rice, and Za’atar Spice.

Eating Right Isn’t Complicated
- submitted by Tini Van-Oehlertz, M.S., R.D. Eating right does not have to be
complicated – simply begin to incorporate a healthy eating plan into
your daily routine. These recommendations from the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans can help get you started: (1). Emphasize fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat, or fat-free milk
and milk products (2). Include lean meats, poultry, fish , beans,
eggs, and nuts (3). Make sure your diet is low in saturated fats,
trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars.
Make your Calories Count
Think nutrient-rich rather than “good” or “bad” foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients, lower in calories. Making smart
food choices can help you stay healthy, manage your weight,
and be physically active.
Focus on Variety
Eat a variety of foods from all of the food groups to get the nutrients your body needs. Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, frozen, or canned. Eat more dark green vegetables such as leafy
greens and broccoli and orange vegetables including carrots and
sweet potatoes. Vary your protein choices with more fish, beans,
and peas. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain cereal, breads,
crackers, rice, or pasta every day.
Know Your Facts
Look for foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol
to help reduce your risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat
should be monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Check the
Nutrition Facts panel on food labels for total fat and saturated
fat.
