The judges selected winners based on the entry’s understanding of the pro-life message, clarity in communicating this message, and creativity and originality. Prizes were awarded to each grade level. Students had the opportunity to make stuffed moles, create and eat mole themed treats, play mole games, and learn about the importance of the mole (6.02 x 1023) in Chemistry. Courtesy of Kristin Wiedel Mole Day is celebrated world-wide 6:02 a.m. until 6:02 p.m. on October 23rd each year and commemorates Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 1023) which is a basic measuring unit in Chemistry. For a given molecule, one mole is a mass (in grams) whose number is equal to the molar mass of the molecule. For example, the water molecule has an molar mass of 18, therefore one mole of water weighs 18 grams. Similarly, a mole of neon has a molar mass of 20 grams. In general, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro's Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. This relationship was first discovered by Amadeo Avogadro (17761858) and he received credit for this after his death. Each level has an activity that teaches the students something new about Day of the Dead and they also do a craft project: Spanish 1 classes made skeletons under the guidance of their instructors Karen Bonkiewicz, Kim Lepper, Magali Napier, and Madelyn McGowan. Skeletons are often seen in many Day of the Dead celebrations and are a representation of the departed. The skeletons were displayed in the classroom and hallways. Spanish 2 - Coffins Courtesy of Tracy Chapelle Spanish 2 classes, under the guidance of their instructors Karen Bonkiewicz, Kim Lepper, and Magali Napier, made coffins in which the clay head pops out of a hole. It is a way of mocking death, symbolizing that death doesn’t have a hold over the deceased. Spanish 3 classes made masks under the guidance of their instructors Tracy Chapelle, Katie Hayes, and Madelyn McGowan. Masks are often seen in many Day of the Dead celebrations and are a representation of the departed. The masks were displayed in the classroom and hallways. Spanish 4 classes made papel picado under the guidance of their instructors Tracy Chapelle and Katie Hayes. Papel picado is the art of paper cutting into intricate designs. The Spanish 4 students divided in groups of three and traced their chosen design on their paper. In class, the students used X-acto knives borrowed from the Art Department to cut out the traced pattern. The many papel picados were hung throughout the school. Spanish 3 - Masks Courtesy of Tracy Chapelle Spanish 4 - Papel Picado Courtesy of Tracy Chapelle Spanish 4 classes also conducted a prayer service that honored their deceased family members and friends. Students wrote poems and essays to honor their loved ones. The altar was decorated with the Bread of the Dead that the students made. Pan de muerto, also known as Bread of the Dead or Dead Man's Bread, is a traditional Mexican sweet bread that is eaten during the Day of the Dead. It is a symbol of the holiday, like Candy Canes at Christmas. Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration usually takes place on November 1 (All Saints Day) and November 2 (All Souls Day). It is celebrated to welcome the souls of the departed back to earth to be with loved ones. They received the highest point total of the year. Courtesy of Yearbook In the month of October, the Pius X Marching Band & Color Guard competed at three marching contests and State competition held in Lincoln. The show titled Joy featured three songs: American Barndance, The Promise of Living, and Joy. Courtesy of Yearbook The band consistently improved their score from the Links Marching Festival on Saturday, October 10, to the October 24th State Marching Festival. Judges rate the bands based on individual music performance, ensemble musical performance, individual visual performance, ensemble visual performance, visual general effect and music general effect. The Pius X Marching Band received a Division 2 Excellent rating at each competition. They gained over 15 points, leaving just three points shy of a Division 1 rating at State. The State Marching Festival and Competition is divided into three locations across the state. Pius X Marching Band members were among the almost 6,000 students representing 60 Nebraska high schools competing at the festival. “The band is maintaining its new larger size in the last couple years. The band is about 40% larger than it was 5 years ago and the color guard has doubled in size.” Band Director Jared Wilhelm notes. “The band students worked very hard on the most challenging show I have ever attempted with a marching band. I was really impressed with the end result. We have gotten a lot of wonderful comments about the show and how well our students performed. I am proud of their development this season.” Mr. Wilhelm had a brand new team assisting him this year. His assistants are Megan Burkle and Chad Houk with Logan Herring and Maura Gillan as section coaches. Expect at least 3 megatrends to hang around for another year. Roughly three out of four Chefs’ Council respondents say they will voluntarily add healthier comfort food, more plant-based dishes, and customization to the menu. Plant foods will grow in creativity as the Know-Your-Farmer program continues where local and seasonal produce is prominent, grains are included with greens, and vegetables are used in place of rice, pasta, and potatoes. For example: grated cauliflower for rice, zucchini ribbons for noodles, and celery roots for potatoes. The top 10 cuisines that will take off: Angolan, Appalachian, Brazilian, Cuban, Indian, Mexiroccan (Mexican/Moroccan), Peruvian, Russian, South African Barbecue, and Tunesian. Items to try in 2016: Adobo , Asian Carp, Curry Paste, Dragon Fruit, Duck Wings, Fiddlehead Ferns, Jackfruit, Microgreens, Persimmons, Pressed Lemons, Red Rice, and Za’atar Spice. Health trends in 2016….. 77% no GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) 67% Antibiotic-free 61% Gluten-free 58% of Chefs see bowls expanding in 2016 Source: Patricia Cole, Food Service Director Magazine, Oct. 15, 2015 —————————————————————————— Eating Right Isn’t Complicated - submitted by Tini Van-Oehlertz, M.S., R.D. Eating right does not have to be complicated – simply begin to incorporate a healthy eating plan into your daily routine. These recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans can help get you started: (1). Emphasize fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat, or fat-free milk and milk products (2). Include lean meats, poultry, fish , beans, eggs, and nuts (3). Make sure your diet is low in saturated fats, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars. Make your Calories Count Think nutrient-rich rather than “good” or “bad” foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients, lower in calories. Making smart food choices can help you stay healthy, manage your weight, and be physically active. Focus on Variety Eat a variety of foods from all of the food groups to get the nutrients your body needs. Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, frozen, or canned. Eat more dark green vegetables such as leafy greens and broccoli and orange vegetables including carrots and sweet potatoes. Vary your protein choices with more fish, beans, and peas. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain cereal, breads, crackers, rice, or pasta every day. Know Your Facts Look for foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol to help reduce your risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat should be monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels for total fat and saturated fat.
