substitute it for another. Hollywood film producers
are particularly adept at this technique. If one
music publisher does not reply or quotes high, and

Contrast this approach with the film producer who
waits until the film is "in the can" before seeking
synchronization quotes and licenses. In the latter
instance, the producer is essentially locked into
using the music that is already in the film because of
the difficulty of stripping it out and replacing it with
something else at the end of the production period.
There is no reason why you cannot use these same
professional film production clearance techniques
for your projects.
Waiting until your concert has been performed,
recorded and videotaped to address copyright
clearance issues is asking for trouble. Advance
program planning is the single most important way
to avoid copyright infringement.
Suppose that you know from the outset that you
would like to record and video your concert for
distribution in cd's and dvd's. To facilitate these
plans, you can then purposely select works for
which the rights you desire are more readily
available on favorable terms. Many smaller music
publishers have one permissions administrator who
will gladly issue performance, mechanical and
synchronization licenses simultaneously for your
project, effectively streamlining the entire process.
Another strategy is to identify two or three alternate
works for your program, so that if you run into
problems securing permission for one title you can
Another even more advantageous form of
substitution is replacement of popular copyrighted
compositions with either public domain works or
works that you specially commission yourself. For
instance, you could program public domain works,
such as selections from Bach's B Minor Mass, on
the recording instead of copyrighted contemporary
works.
Unless your choir is singing from
proprietary copyrighted editions, no mechanical
licenses are necessary for inclusion of public
domain works on a cd or video. Likewise, if you
create your own arrangement of Amazing Grace
you may proceed as you wish.

English Ways: Conversations
By The Book
with English Choral Conductors
Jeffrey Sandborg
A Simple Copyright compliance Method for
Musicians and Music Professionals
Rob Monath
This comprehensive survey chronicles the complex
and often contradictory state of choral music in
Britain through a series of in-depth interviews with
twenty-three major conductors, including Stephen
Cleobury, Simon Halsey and John Eliot Gardner.
Differences between the philosophies and practices
of English conductors and their American counterparts
are vast: English Ways candidly explores distinctively
British philosophies, techniques, backgrounds, ideals,
likes and dislikes. The foreword by John Rutter
provides an incisive historical overview and
framework for the discussions.

Monteverdi
HMB228 $45.00
Sale Price $22.00
Through extensive analyses, performance suggestions
and translations, Performing Monteverdi interprets the
choral works of the well known and highly influential
Italian composer, Claudio Monteverdi, in the context of
the performance practices of the Renaissance. The work
is an invaluable, practical resource not only for
conductors, but for scholars and performers as well. In
recognition of the foregoing, it was selected as the second
title for the prestigious American Choral Directors
Association Research and Publications Committee
Composer Series.
Conceived by Dr. Wilhem Ehmann as a
handbook, this book is a quick systematic
reference for American Choral musicians.
Brenda Smith has brought into workable form his
incomplete manuscript, which provides a
practical application of multiple performance
practice approaches to the 17th, 18th and 19th
century choral repertoire. This book affords a
deeper understanding of performance practice
concepts in an historical context.
Joseph A. Mussulman
Joseph Mussulman deftly places Shaw and his career
against the backdrop of developments in American
musical history since the 1940’s. This Biography
chronicles the career of a remarkable man and a gifted
musician, whose foremost conviction is that “to be
an artist is not the privilege of a few but the necessity of us
all.”
Carole Glenn’s In Quest Of Answers
provides an opportunity for American Choral
conductors to voice their ideas, creating a
profile of the choral art in the United States.
It also provides glimpses of their individual
