Jordan Healthcare Initiative - Executive Brief
Corporate Social Responsibility The issue The Jordanian government and Cisco use technology to improve access to high-quality healthcare for citizens Networks Jordan Healthcare Initiative Cisco and Jordanian Government Take First Steps to Transform Healthcare Services for Rural Citizens In Jordan, people in rural communities often lack access to healthcare specialists The Jordanian government and Cisco collaborated to create a “telehealth” network that connects rural patients to specialist physicians at an urban hospital. Through Cisco’s HealthPresence™ solution, patients at rural Al Mafraq Governmental Hospital can see specialist physicians at Prince Hamzah Hospital in Amman, the Jordanian capital. By using information and communications technology (ICT), the Jordan Healthcare Initiative has the potential to improve healthcare for all Jordanians and provide equal access for rural citizens. Meanwhile, specialists at urban hospitals dozens or even hundreds of kilometers away have the expertise and skills that are improving health and quality of life for many patients. Connecting these urban physicians with distant patients via technology can extend the reach of providers, increase access to healthcare, reduce costs, and empower patients across Jordan. Human Network Doctors in Jordan use Cisco HealthPresence to reach remote patients. "Cisco's HealthPresence solution has already increased the level of collaboration between specialists from the Prince Hamzah Hospital and the Al-Mafraq Governmental Hospital. The solution is also receiving impressive feedback from patients. This is considered the first stage and we look forward to linking other hospitals in the Kingdom. In addition, the participating medical team is the nucleus of this pilot, hoping that it will expand on a larger scale in the very near future." – Dr. Ali Hyasat, director general, Prince Hamzah Hospital, Jordan Using Cisco HealthPresence technology, specialists in cardiology, nephrology, and dermatology at Prince Hamzah Hospital in Amman consult with patients and physicians at rural Al-Mafraq Governmental Hospital (MGH) in northeast Jordan. The HealthPresence solution at MGH is staffed by a licensed healthcare professional and the technology delivers a true-to-life consultation experience between the patient and the remote specialist in Amman. Cisco strategically collaborated with the Government of Jordan, including the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of ICT, to formulate the Jordan Healthcare Initiative and establish the first remote clinic. The Jordan Healthcare Initiative is part of the vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II to transform Jordan's healthcare delivery system. Technology Network The telehealth clinic uses communication, collaboration, and video technologies to provide “care-at-a-distance” for remote and underserved communities. Cisco HealthPresence allows patients to interact with doctors, who can be hundreds of kilometers away, within a clinical setting. It creates a dynamic environment for patient care and delivers a video enabled, face-to-face experience between the patient and the provider. Cisco HealthPresence uses the network as the platform and intelligent routing to provide real-time information exchange by connecting medical devices — including thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, multipurpose scopes, stethoscopes, and handheld cameras. Impact x More Information For more information on the Jordan Healthcare Initiative, please contact: [email protected] The Jordan Healthcare Initiative is already transforming healthcare delivery. Patients report that specialty consultations are having a positive impact on their lives. The program also enables the quick and efficient exchange of medical information and knowledge. Future deployments of HealthPresence technology will expand the reach of the telehealth clinic to accommodate a larger population, a broader range of treatments, and additional healthcare organizations. The Jordan Healthcare Initiative is the first program to implement Cisco's HealthPresence in the Middle East and Africa region. It will help healthcare providers in Jordan improve and expand their services and will create new opportunities for healthcare delivery and economic development. cisco.com/go/csr Cisco Corporate Social Responsibility We believe that businesses have a responsibility to operate in ways that respect and ultimately benefit people, communities, and the planet we live on; we call this Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Our core CSR philosophy is that impact multiplies whenever human and technology networks combine to solve a problem. This is why we approach CSR the same way we approach business—by applying our technology, employee expertise, and partnerships. We are focused on four primary goals: improving the well-being of people and communities around the world, reducing our environmental impact and helping our customers do the same, conducting our business ethically, and creating a workplace where our employees thrive. © 2012 Cisco and/or its affiliates. | © 2012 Cisco Systems, Inc.
