Business Update
Dear Associates,
Last month, Mark, Erin, Nancy and I attended the ASTD International Conference in Dallas, TX and contributed
for the second year in a row as an exhibitor. It was a wonderful time for us to gather with our colleagues,
promote Emergenetics, and share best practices with industry leaders. As most of you know, while we have a
strong following amongst the people who know us, we are still a relatively unknown name in the market place.
Something struck us as while at ASTD that I would like to share with you. Simply put, our product offering
rivals/exceeds any of our competitors, and now seems to be our time to stake our place in the market.
This may seem like a relatively simple idea, but it is gratifying for me to see how far our product line has come
in the last two years. Our Power of WE Modules, launched at the beginning of 2013, have received very good
reviews and are helping to extend the Emergenetics principles beyond the training room and into practical day-to-day operations,
our eLearning Guides are delivering Emergenetics lessons in effective new ways, and our avatar developments are opening up new
opportunities of delivering and marketing that are both fun and informative.
Our biggest innovation, affectionately known as Project X, is set to Beta test by the end of July. Once we are confident in its functionality
and unleash it into the market, we believe that it has the potential to revolutionize our business in a way that none of our competitors
have yet to find – a truly practical, easy to use, daily method of applying Emergenetics principles with our clients.
We are striving to make Emergenetics THE STANDARD in the Assessment world, not only through our superior psychometrics, but
also through our innovative and practical applications. Coupled with strong marketing and promotion, our future looks bright as
we take significant steps from being what one client described to me as “the best kept secret in the industry” to a true market leader.
We welcome any suggestions you may have to see this accomplished.
Best,
Morgan

News From Emergenetics International - Asia
Dear friends,
I hope you’ve had a meaningful first half of 2013!
For us here in Asia-Pacific, we’ve had a fulfilling six months as we gain momentum in our efforts to establish
“Emergenetics in Every Mind”. We continue to use our three key strategies of “deepening engagement”, “expanding
outreach” and “widening exposure” as guideposts to align our every effort as a team, and doing so in a way that is
aligned to our purpose statement of “WE Value People”.
These last few months, we continued our efforts in deepening engagement with Associates based in Asia-Pacific.
This includes communicating with our Associates in Asia through our e-newsletter InterWEave, and supporting the
Associate-initiated SCOOPEG sessions. Speaking of which, we would like to thank Associates Anne Yeo, Karen Heimlicher-Foong, Michelle
Ow, Grace Quek and Ken Wong for graciously volunteering to be part of the first SCOOPEG Steering Committee, which was set up to
identify themes and topics of interest for upcoming sessions of the community-led Associates event supported by our office. We are
also thankful to have Master Associate and Director of EGI-A Joshua Teo lead in the recent session of SCOOPEG where he shared on the topic of
“Integrating Emergenetics with Other Tools”.
I am happy to have met Associates based in Malaysia, Thailand and Japan on my recent trips there. It’s always great to be able to meet up with
members of the Emergenetics family, and I’m happy to learn that Emergenetics is very much growing in these places. I’m especially proud
of our Master Associates Shin and Yas from Japan who are flying our banner high, and would like to congratulate Yas for his new book on
Emergenetics, which I am certain will raise the profile of Emergenetics in Japan further. I’m also proud to note that Sangeeta and her team are
doing well as the new Country Representative for Malaysia looking after the needs of our Associates based there.
One exciting initiative our office launched is the Associate Staff Team Development Initiative, which allows Associates who own SmallMedium Enterprises to purchase profiles for the purpose of developing their own staff members at an exclusive rate. This is to help
Associates use Emergenetics throughout their organisation, and especially in the area of team development.
In terms of outreach, we had a record number of certification programmes this quarter. We welcome 27 new associates from our three
certification programmes held in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. I’m especially proud of the Malaysian team for putting together their
first certification programme. I would also like to thank Sasithorn for her help with making the certification programme in Thailand a reality!
Back here in our office, we have added one more member to our Market Development team. So please join me in welcoming Geraldine
Quek who has just completed her certification programme. Geraldine holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Forensic Science, and
her passion for research will no doubt be a value-add to us all.
In terms of widening exposure, we continue to take a tactical approach, reaching to specific audiences through giving them a first-hand
experience of Emergenetics. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, we recently supported Project Pari, a youth development
initiative of Zonta Club Singapore, a chapter of Zonta international which advances the status of women worldwide. Through the
sponsorship of STEP profiles for a one-day Emergenetics workshop conducted pro bono by Associates Samuel Chu and Michelle Ow, not only
have we made a difference to some 60 teenage girls, we have also generated awareness of Emergenetics among corporate women leaders
committed to making a difference in their community. We’re also proud of Associate Aaron Yong for flying in to Xining Province in China to
conduct a pro bono Emergenetics workshop for volunteers of Love Qinghai Tibet Rescue & Aid, a non-profit humanitarian organisation.
With our hearts and sight set on finishing the year strongly, I encourage you to join us on this exciting journey of making a difference through
Emergenetics. I would love to hear from you, so we can explore how my team and I can support you on your Emergenetics journey. After all, the
Whole Emergenetics (WE) approach is the heart of what Emergenetics is all about and our purpose.
Journey on!
Emergenetically yours,
Terence Quek

Emergenetics Profiles: David Remson, Workforce Development Coordinator
tate o olora o e artment o ealt care olic
At the State of Colorado, Department of Healthcare Policy, Emergenetics is
playing a pivotal role in developing leaders and creating high-performing
teams. Emergenetics Associate David Remson is leading the effort,
facilitating workshops to over 80% of the employee base.
“One of our top five core goals is to build and maintain a strong
organizational culture—with Emergenetics we connect culture with
enhanced employee engagement,” says Remson.
The Department’s organizational development focus with Emergenetics is centered on a multilevel engagement
strategy, with everyone from new employees taking an Emergenetics Profile in an onboarding capacity to executive
leadership teams utilizing customized workshops to maximize capabilities.
According to Remson, Emergenetics has proven to be a highly applicable tool for communication, highlighting a practical way for employees
to achieve cohesion and better understand and work together in a team environment. “We provide training to teams regularly, and it’s all about
getting to a natural understanding point.”
Remson points to a specific team within the Department to highlight Emergenetics’ impact—“This team was having a difficult time understanding
the direction their manager was looking to go. We did an Emergenetics workshop and the results were eye-opening—each team member
had a strong Structural preference, while the manager was hugely Conceptual. Additionally, there was a large variance on the Expressiveness
spectrum. We put together an action plan for the team that focused on a greater specificity around ideas and concepts and a more deliberate
feedback focus. The results have been excellent.”
Remson employs additional tactical elements to his work to actualize Emergenetics insights for his employees. “We take activities like MPA
exercises and allow individuals to create communication phrases that appeal to them. By providing this information to the full team, individuals
engage in more focused, tailored conversations,” says Remson. Employees also place Profiles in their cubicles and bring them to meetings to
accelerate this approach toward open, clear communication.
More broadly, Emergenetics is a foundational development tool for the Department and Remson outlines key broad initiatives where
Emergenetics is being used:
• Maximizing Employee Potential: Emergenetics is a way for the Department to identify strengths and better leverage talents.
• Boosting Team Performance: Emergenetics is provided via full-day, half-day and 1-2 hour implementations to teams and customized to
each team’s needs and members. Teams minimize confusion and interpersonal conflict.
• Ongoing Employee Training: Emergenetics tips and activities are emailed weekly to
employees to keep training top-of-mind.
• Employee Engagement: Emergenetics is linked with three distinctive performance
measures and measured for results via surveys that ask employees:
◦ Do you recommend the State as a great place to work?
◦ Are you planning on being employed by the State for the next 12 months?
◦ Can you successfully collaborate with others in the State?
“One of our top five core
goals is to build and maintain
a strong organizational
culture—with Emergenetics we
connect culture with enhanced
employee engagement.”
Finally, under Remson’s leadership, the Department is initiating two innovative leadership programs that will employ Emergenetics to drill down
more deeply into leadership behaviors and approaches. “We are putting together an Emerging Leaders program for select high-potentials as
well as a Transformational Leadership program that will focus on critical thinking and transforming how people actually lead,” explains Remson.
These two programs build on how the Department is bringing organizational and employee development to the forefront. Remson explains
that it is a natural progression to tie Emergenetics into new initiatives—“We focus on bringing business results and accentuating how our employees
actually work more effectively, but most importantly we listen to them. What we regularly hear is that people have done assessments before but they
haven’t actually seen results on a day-to-day level until Emergenetics.”
With this effectiveness in place, Remson and the Department are committed to using Emergenetics and are excited to implement it in new ways.

Science on the Brain: The Brain and Trust
By Mary Case, M.D.
Neuropathologist, Scientific Advisor, Emergenetics International
In Emergenetics “trust” may have a unique description in each of the seven
attributes, but in all human brains1 trust is modulated by oxytocin. In 2000,
100 years after its discovery, oxytocin was reported to be the Trust Hormone
produced in women in response to stress or danger. Oxytocin fueled females to
“tend and befriend” others, gathering the old and the young into a safe trusting
environment. This was contrasted to the characteristic epinephrine (adrenalin)
powered “fight or fright” male response. Of course oxytocin was soon found
in men (we knew all along that women could produce epinephrine) and the
function of oxytocin was linked to the basic unit of trust, “pair bonding”, in both
genders, including courtship, sex, labor and delivery, lactation, and parent-child
attachment.2
Since 1990 there have been over one hundred publications on oxytocin
exploring the details of its connection to trust, love, and even gaming
theory.3 Part of the reason for the large number of studies is that oxytocin is
available as a nose spray and can be easily layered into an experiment.
Tabloids have co-opted some elements of the publications so you may have
seen headlines such as “Read minds with oxytocin”4 and “Oxytocin keeps your
man farther away from other attractive women”.5 A national columnist6 has
called for charitable organizations to make oxytocin available to all, in order to build world peace. Some suggest it should be used as a
treatment for children with autism.
The solid research on oxytocin has brought its real function more into focus. In a stressful situation oxytocin provides a foundation for
humans to recognize more immediately members of their own group. It solidifies trust and loyalty towards those we see as our own clan,
rather than everyone. In collaboration with a myriad of other neurotransmitters and hormones, and the cognitive and memory functions of
the brain, oxytocin opens the human brain to trust others in real life situations. And in 2011 the same researcher who reported “tend and
befriend” has been credited with identifying the oxytocin receptor gene in humans. 7
For Emergenetics, the most valuable truth about oxytocin is that is reinforces the healthy working relationships within teams regardless
of thinking and behavioral scores. When someone feels trusted, with validating words, or a touch on the shoulder for example, that
experience causes their brains to produce more oxytocin, and they begin to act more trustworthy. As trust builds, so does loyalty and
cohesiveness within the team and company. Oxytocin is certainly not a universal love potion or a simple way to gain world peace, it
is the foundation of how humans trust in our integral social relationships.

EMERGENETICS IN THE LAND OF SMILES
Mayura Phakdeerod is Managing Director and Facilitator of her own
training outfit, Learning Gallery, based out of Bangkok, Thailand. Armed
with more than 20 years experience in human capital development, Mayura has leveraged on Emergenetics
since she found out about the profile in 2005.
Mayura, who was certified in 2005, was attracted by the simple tool, which was easy to understand, yet
provided an in-depth understanding of individuals on corporate, educational, and personal levels.
“When I started using Emergenetics in my workshops, I realized that I had found my dream tool.”
Seeing the positive effects of using Emergenetics in her workshops, Mayura has since made it compulsory
for participants in all her training workshops to take the Emergenetics profile.
“Besides allowing them to know about themselves better, these participants also learn to know others around them – their spouse, friends,
colleagues. It is a good ice-breaker and also forms the foundation for other courses that the individual pursues.”
One of the key programmes which Mayura has developed and integrated Emergenetics into is a workshop on Service Culture.
“Many people have the misconception that all service staff members will
have a Social (Red) preference, and be third-third Expressive and or Flexible.
Through our workshops, we have shown that everyone can be a good service
staff member regardless of their thinking and behavioural preferences.”
Instead of training service staff members a standard way to extend good
service, Mayura instead trains them to be sensitive to customers’ individual
and unique needs.
“We encourage them to use their most preferred attribute to find solutions to
customers’ problems.”
Sabaijai Arts Studio and Emergenetics Development Center
So inspired by Emergenetics, Mayura also set up Sabaijai Arts Studio
and Emergenetics Development Centre in Bangkok, where she allows
participants to use the space to relax, reflect, rejuvenate, and renew
oneself through Emergenetics and other activities such as yoga and art.
Mayura has also utilized STEP (Student/Teacher Emergenetics Profile)® successfully
on youth exchange students to help them better focus on their purpose during
the exchange programme.
She also uses the tool with her team of trainers in her company.
“I used to wonder why one of my art teachers was never on time. After he took his
profile, I finally understood why! I am very happy since now I can also manage my
team better.”
“When I started using Emergenetics
in my workshops, I realized that I had
found my dream tool.”

Old Associate Site Closing July 1
The time has come to say goodbye to the old Associates website. We wanted to keep the old site operational so that you had time to adjust to
how the new site works while still being able to rely on the old site if needed. However, at this point, the old Associates site is actually hindering
development on the new site, and we want to get all Associates unified on the new site. Therefore:
We will be closing the old Associates site on July 1.
We recommend that if you are still using the old Associate site to do any work, that you begin using the new site as soon as possible so that it is
familiar to you once the old site is no longer accessible.
For those of you who don’t yet feel comfortable
on the new site, or for those who would simply
like a tour of the new Associate site, we will be
hosting an instructional webinar on June 27th
at 9:00 AM Mountain to walk through the new
Associate site. All Associates are welcome to
attend, and we will record the webinar for later
viewing if you are unable to make it. We will send
out login information for the webinar as it draws
near.

ASTD International Conference and Expo
For the second consecutive year, Emergenetics International was a significant presence on the exhibit hall at the American Society for Training
and Development’s annual conference, which attracts more than 9,000 learning, training, HR and OD professionals.
ASTD is the premiere event for our industry and we sent key staff members there to build the Emergenetics International brand, promote our
new solutions, services and products, and network with thought leaders, practitioners and clients.
Most importantly we went to learn.
Key takeaways from industry:
• Trust is HUGE – We conducted a survey that found Trust to be the biggest challenge for teams. We heard numerous keynotes and topics
on Trust. A better workplace boils down to Trust.
•
Leadership is being built on Innovation and Communication – Organizations need strong leaders and robust leadership development
platforms that boost innovation and reinforce strong communication.
•
Mobile and E-Learning are at the tipping point – And they’re only getting more critical with an expanding and more diverse workforce.
Finally, we found out that Emergenetics is primed for big things…We have products that no competitors can touch and new solutions that
tie assessments with clear business needs in ways that are exciting.
Whether Power of WE or E-Learning Apps or Tip Sheets—If your organization hasn’t experienced them, call us and we’ll demo it.
See you next year in Washington DC for ASTD 2014!
