Nancy Creek Primitive Baptist Church
There were two churches in the North Buckhead area in the early days. One was the Sardis
Methodist Church on Powers Ferry Road. The other was in Chamblee on 8th street. They were
roughly equidistant from the Evins property in northeast North Buckhead and northern
Brookhaven. These days, the Nancy Creek Church is a lot further away by car since Peachtree
Golf Course was built on Peachtree Industrial Road and the Norfolk Southern rail line was built.
But back in the 1800s, chances were that if you were buried in a cemetery, you might very well
end up at Sardis Methodist or Nancy Creek Baptist. The cemetery records bear this out.

Nancy Creek Primitive Baptist Church
At Nancy Creek Primitive Baptist Church, we worship our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
following the pattern of simplicity found in His birth, life, death, and resurrection. As we
magnify the Lord and exalt His name together, we actively seek individuals to join us in our
thanksgiving to the Lord.
Constituted in 1824, we are one of the oldest church congregations in the metro Atlanta
area. Nonetheless, we pursue the will of our sovereign, eternal, unchangeable God with a
freshness, vigor, and joy unspeakable. Our church consists of people who love the Lord and
come together to serve Him.

Hi All,
I thought I would resend this for the newcomers and those who missed it the
last time around.

HistoryOfDekalbCounty1822‐1900Page111
Nancy Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery was the last resting place for many early north
DeKalb residents, many of whom were not members of the church.
Among the pioneers buried there are members of the House and Goodwin families, although the
patriarchs of these families are not at Nancy Creek. Samuel House is said to have been buried in an
unmarked grave at Prospect Methodist Church in Chamblee.
108
Solomon Goodwin originally was buried at Nancy Creek, but was later moved to the Goodwin family
cemetery on the grounds of the old homeplace on Peachtree Road in Brookhaven.
There were no Negro churches in DeKalb County before the Civil War. Slave-owners gave slaves
religious instruction at home, with older children assigned to teaching the Bible and simple catechism.”
Some white churches had separate seating for slaves, often in galleries. Likewise separate areas
generally were set aside for slaves in white cemeteries.
Among the graves identified at Nancy Creek are those of Kitty, Rolly, Washington and Anthony, slaves of
the House family, and Flowers family slaves Sam and Tilda. Blacks were barred from the cemetery in
1902 owing to the want of vacant property in our cemetery.” Nancy Baugh Evins died in November
1883, and is buried in an unmarked grave at Nancy Creek. She was the mother of 11 children, 57
grandchildren and 93 great grandchildren. South Carolinians, Nancy and her husband Jack came to
DeKalb from Gwinnett before the county was organized, and settled on what is now Windsor Parkway.
Evins land covered the area of Peachtree Dunwoody, Osborne and House roads in now DeKalb and
Fulton.
Jack Evins is not buried at Nancy Creek, but in the vicinity of the Evins homeplace. Atlanta
historian Franklin M. Garrett tells the story of trying to find Jack’s burial site in 1931: “The home had
disappeared but the site was easily discernible, being upon an elevation surrounded by fine old trees...
A large cedar nearby seemed to indicate the presence of a family cemetery. An inspection disclosed what
appeared to be one grave, but alas, no marker. Better luck was had some sixty feet away from the grave,
for there, under the leaves and pine needles, lay some of the broken remains of a once handsome tomb
box~ Vandals had done their work. Enough fragments were located to piece together the sought for vital
statistics. Expertly cut in deeply incised letters and numerals was the following inscription: In Memory of
John L. Evins Born March 23, 1794, Died August 8th, 1864.’Further investigation at the site led to the
discovery that the side pieces of the tomb were serving as front doorstep and hearthstone of a small
house nearby, while the lower half of the top slab, bearing the name of its maker, D. N. Judson, Atlanta,
had been pressed into service as a back doorstep for the same house.”

“He Swept Me Off My Feet”
By Charles Taylor in the November 2002 North Buckhead Newsletter, page 7
After 63 years of being part of our neighborhood an early settler is leaving
her home at 4055 North Ivy Road for the comforts of retirement living.
Mrs. R. Beverly Irwin, better known as Miriam to her friends, was a new
bride in 1939 when she moved into the home her husband, an attorney, had
built for her. It was one of about 15 homes on the street at the time. Now
there are more than 40.
Just a few weeks earlier, while teaching in Chickamauga, Georgia, she had
told her husband-to-be, "I just can't live in Atlanta." But "you see, he swept
me off my feet," she said.
Her husband continued to sweep her off her feet, taking her to dances at the
neighborhood's popular dance spot, the Peachtree Gardens Club, which
"had a really big dance floor." The club was built in 1927 at the foot of
North Ivy but was torn down in 2000 to make way for new homes.
In the intervening years, the Irwins raised two children and maintained a
vacation home on St. Simons Island. Her husband died in 1987.
Miriam recalled that North Buckhead was once known as a place where
Atlanta's wealthier residents built their summer homes to escape the city
heat. One such home, known as the Timmons place, was located at the end
of the dirt road that runs off of North Ivy at Mountain Drive. This home
was demolished prior to the construction of Georgia 400.
A log cabin on Arden Way was another retreat from the heat, Miriam
remembers. The cabin still stands today and is occupied. It reportedly was
the summer home of Georgia Governor John M. Slaton who served from
1911-1912.
Asked if she had enjoyed her time on North Ivy she replied, "I must have. I
stayed here for 63 years."
Although Miriam has moved to a retirement home on Roswell Road, her
home on North Ivy did not go up for sale. The new owners are her
granddaughter, Dorothy, and her husband, Phillip Walker.
"I'm really pleased that they want to move in," she said. "They like the
location, the good schools, and the great neighbors.

Subject: the quarry near Carmaine Dr.
I stumbled across this site (http://www.nbca.org/quarry.htm) when I ran a
Google search on McClatchey Elementary.
I attended DF McClatchey Elementary from 1st grade to 5th. I lived at the
“bottom” of Carmaine Dr --- N. Stratford Rd to be exact --- from 1968 –
1972. My walk home group from school consisted of about 15 kids from
Carmaine, Mountain Way, N. Stratford, etc, Every day, we took the path
through the quarry – I remember the “ledge” and some slippery spots --- we
used to act like we were going to throw each other off the ledge. I
remember the sound of the falls… wow!
We eventually would emerge onto Carmaine Dr through someone’s back
yard --- I believe the Stringfellows or Kirch’s? --- anyway ---- extremely
fond memories especially of playing down in Nancy Creek, riding bikes,
building forts in the woods, and having a blast. My father plated about 10
white pines back in 1969---- sorry --- I could go on and on…
Hey, thanks for the site --- it was bitter sweet to see my old stompin
grounds…
Thanks,
Bob Johnson

Subject: North Buckhead
Dear Gordon,
I have just re-read the July '08 issue of the North Buckhead Civic Association
Newsletter. I read every word, even the ads. When I finished I felt
sentimental, nostalgic, and old. As founding members of NBCA, I
remember the beginnings, Fred and I participated in the the struggles with
the incredible growth of the area and now, the increased membership ,
activity, and vitality of the area. Fred was chairman of the zoning
committee for many years. It is quite emotional to observe the changes
that have taken place in my lifetime, most of which I have lived in the
buckhead area. I spent my first year out of college teaching at the old
R.L.Hope School -- 43 seventh graders that first year ! Many of the children
walked to school and some of the teachers did. The school was then on the
corner of Peachtree and Piedmont. I had just been married and Fred and I
lived on Lookout Place. My family home was on Lakeview Avenue. I now
live at Canterbury Court Retirement Community, and I lived on North
Stratford Rd for 34 years before coming here. I've never been far away
from Buckhead! I rejoice in the development of the green spaces-- the little
"Beauty Spot" on Wieuca, Blue Heron and its expansion, and the Peachtree
Dunwoody Road Park . Of course there are many challenges, chief among
them the terrible traffic. Some genius will come up with a solution to that
problem before long, working with the Connect Atlanta team. If not
underground, maybe a Skyline solution somehow. Among the things I
remember fondly is the Tuxedo Pharmacy. I have been a customer of theirs
for 53 of their 56 years.
It is wonderful to keep my contact with North Buckhead through the
Newsletter. I look forward to many more issues. Helen

Sardis Methodist Church
The plaque says that
Sardis Church was
established in 1812 on
land taken from the
Indians.
Susan Kessler Barnard
says the date is more
likely around 1825.
The church is supposed to be
one of the three oldest in
Atlanta.
130
The cemetery at the church is very old. Many graves are marked only with
simple unfinished local stones. The oldest dated grave we found is of a 7
year old girl, Sarah Barnwell, who died in 1831.

Stevens Mill
An old mill site can be observed just south of the intersection of Wieuca Road and Nancy Creek
on the west side of the road. The mill dam was in ruins for many years but was rebuilt when the
adjacent property was subdivided and re-developed. If anyone can provide additional historical
information about the mill, we will be glad to publish it on this site.
