Creative Peebles Festival
After 33 years of The Peebles Arts Festival the festival committee were considering
how the event could best be developed. The success of Peebles Creative Place 2014
was identified as a model that could allow everyone to take a fresh approach to this
much loved event. After much discussion it has now been agreed that, from this year,
the annual celebration will be known as the Creative Peebles Festival and run as a
partnership headed by the Eastgate Theatre. Individuals and organisations who
would like to put forward ideas or proposals should start by emailing
[email protected]
The first Creative Peebles Festival will run from Friday 26 August to
Sunday 4 September 2016 and more news will be issued as it develops.

spring ...
2016
This Spring the programme is - as
ever - rich, varied and full of ambition.
And as usual the arrival of the new
brochure will provoke all sorts of
reactions. Some people go online right
away to buy tickets for a favourite
show, some phone up to check details
before they commit, and some sit
down with the family diary to choose
their entertainment for the next three
months. But here’s another option:
look out for the women!
The Eastgate is delighted to welcome
a clutch of divas to the theatre this
spring, all bringing tremendous new
work. First up is Joanna Macgregor,
one of the world’s most innovative
and creative pianists who moves
effortlessly between classical and
contemporary repertoire, adding
touches of jazz and improvisation.
Expect a performance of ‘effortless
brilliance and blistering commitment’.
She’s followed by the inimitable
Liz Lochhead – poet, playwright,
translator, broadcaster and feminist –
with a collection of poems,
monologues and music that span the
decades of her prolific creative life.
This is a literary treat that will touch
your heart as well as your mind;
‘brilliant, raucous and scabrously
funny’.
Next in line is acclaimed
choreographer Rosie Kay, who’ll be
working with the Eastgate to present
her stunning piece of dance theatre,
5 Soldiers, at Glencorse Barracks in
Penicuik. Her company will also stage
pop-up events and lead dance
workshops in both Peebles and
Penicuik.
And finally there’s Rachel and Becky
Unthank, award-winning singersongwriters who draw inspiration
from the English folk tradition to create
songs that have been described as
‘unsentimental and subversive tales
of loss, fear, booze, brawls, abuse
and sorrow’. What’s not to love?

Frankenstein
Somethings Old, Somethings New

The greatest of all romantic ballets, Peter
Wright’s production of Marius Petipa’s classic is
a tale of betrayal, the supernatural and love that
transcends death. A love story unfolds against
the ghostly backdrop of a Rhineland forest
haunted by the fearful presence of the Wilis –
vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. The
beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, falls for Albrecht
who conceals his identity to win her. The
discovery of her lover’s deception shatters
Giselle’s innocence and causes her to die of a
broken heart. Albrecht is thrown into the hands
of the merciless Wilis, but Giselle cannot bear
to watch him die and returns as a ghost to
save him.
A young scientist at university, Victor
Frankenstein becomes obsessed with unlocking
the secrets of life, and decides to create it
himself. Stealing body parts from fresh graves
and stitching them together, he builds his
Creature, with horrific repercussions.
A warm welcome to Scotland's leading literary light. From the bittersweet to the rude and
raunchy, Scotland’s Makar, Liz Lochhead weaves a spellbinding and beguiling show, mixing
poems, monologues and music.

...Poetry and Music
The world premiere of principal choreographer
Liam Scarlett’s first three-act ballet for the
company. An adaptation of Mary Shelley’s
Frankenstein which, rather than vamping up the
gothic horror of the narrative, focuses on the
human dramas of love, fear, loneliness and
longing that play out around its monster
protagonist. Scarlett once again works with
designer John Macfarlane and composer Lowell
Liebermann, who has written a specially
commissioned score for the piece.
Accompanied by the soulful sax of Steve Kettley she presents an intoxicating mix of her best
work. During her career Liz Lochhead has been described variously as a poet, feminist
playwright, translator and broadcaster but has said that 'when somebody asks me what I do
I usually say writer. The most precious thing to me is to be a poet. If I were a playwright, I'd like
to be a poet in the theatre.’

The band’s unique arrangements and multilayered sound incorporates Irish, classical, jazz,

Auditorium
Known for their timeless, unsentimental and
quietly subversive tales of loss, fear, booze, and
brawls, multi-award winning Rachel and Becky
Unthank forge links between folk worlds old,
new and other. Staunch traditionalism and sonic
adventure are easy bedfellows in their gentle
hands. One day they are rubbing shoulders
with Robert Plant, Adele, Elbow and Radiohead
at the Mercurys, the next they are in a
bunkhouse cooking for 50 fans on one of their
residential singing weekends.
In the 15 years since they first met to play
through some of the older Scottish fiddle tunes,
renowned Scottish fiddler Iain Fraser and
adventurous Canadian cellist Christine Hanson
have carved out busy musical paths in Scotland,
Canada and places in between.
This year they renew their amazing musical
chemistry, exploring old Scottish tunes but
also some very old Canadian tunes too. This
is traditional music with its shoes kicked off supreme musicianship, perfect clarity, and
inspired arrangements. Enjoy an animated
evening of Cape Breton/Scottish traditional
music, stories and good craic!

Lucia di

Donizetti's tragic masterpiece marked the
beginning of his partnership with librettist
Salvadore Cammarano – who, in turn, looked
to Walter Scott. Cammarano’s adaptation of
Scott’s The Bride of Lammermoor moved
Donizetti to produce some of his most beautiful
and most dramatically potent music.
Benoît Jacquot’s production of Massenet’s
tragic opera explores the conflict between duty
and our most passionate desires. Werther loves
Charlotte, but she promised her mother on her
deathbed that she would marry Albert. After
the marriage Charlotte suggests that Werther
should leave – but not forget her.
In the famous Mad Scene Donizetti’s musical
motifs poignantly make manifest her distracted
mind. Other highlights include the sextet Chi
mi frena in tal momento, the furious duet
between Enrico and Edgardo and the opera’s
closing Tomb Scene. Director Katie Mitchell
focusses on how an intelligent woman, failed
by the men in her life, experiences a horrifying
mental breakdown.
Charlotte, unhappily married, has fallen in
love with Werther through his letters. He
returns unexpectedly; Charlotte sends him
away. Werther shoots himself and dies in
Charlotte’s arms.

ROSIE KAY DANCE COMPANY
presents

Moonbeam on
a Cat’s Ear
5 Soldiers
Glencorse Barracks, Penicuik
The groundbreaking, multi-award winning
5 Soldiers is being performed in Scotland for the
first time. The Eastgate is working in partnership
with Rosie Kay Dance Company to present this
visceral tour de force of the senses to audiences
in the south east.
Auditorium
By the light of the moon in the middle of the
night Rosie, Toby Toby the cat and one small
mouse sneak out, into the garden, to play in the
shadow of the apple tree. When Toby Toby
steals the moon from the sky they go on an
adventure across star-speckled skies and over
the sea. But is it all just a dream?
5 Soldiers is a moving, dramatic piece of dance
theatre that explores how 5 people are
transformed into 5 soldiers ready to lay their
bodies on the line, preparing themselves for the
sheer physicality of combat, the possibility of
injury and the impact of conflict on their bodies
and minds.
This new visual adventure into an exciting world
of dreams and imagination is told using
puppetry, video and a new musical score. It is
based on the favourite book by Marie-Louise
Gay and presented as part of the Puppet

Powerful physicality, brutal honesty and
moments of humour combine in a never to be
forgotten performance illuminating a largely
unknown world.

Murder, Margaret
and Me
Shakespeare Shorts –
Hamlet, Romeo
and Juliet
Auditorium
Queen of crime Agatha Christie didn’t want
Margaret Rutherford to bring Miss Marple to
life. Margaret Rutherford was mortified at the
prospect of sullying her reputation with
something as sordid as murder. This is the story
of the real reason why “the funniest woman
alive” didn’t want to take on her most famous
role. An unlikely friendship develops between
the two women filled with high tea, brandy
snaps and gossip and Agatha herself turns
detective on a mission to unearth Rutherford’s
tragic and shocking secret.
“Whiplash wit” The Guardian
Auditorium
Two of the bard’s classics, reduced to
50 minutes each and specially adapted for
young audiences.
Hamlet’s got the hump. His Uncle Claudius has
bumped off his Dad and married his Mum,
who’s a bit too fond of ‘ginger beer’.girlfriend
Ophelia won’t listen to a word he says and his
best mate, Horatio, keeps seeing ghosts. No
wonder Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are
confused. Mysteries, murders and magical
music in this intriguing take on Shakespeare’s
longest play.

Through the
Looking Glass
Auditorium
Auditorium
Niggle is a painter. Not a very successful one,
partly because he has so many other things to
do. For some time he has been obsessed with
one particular canvas – a curious picture of a
tree with a vast landscape stretching out
behind it. The painting keeps getting bigger
and bigger, but Niggle has a journey to make.
Leap through the looking glass into a world of
imagination as the dance school’s youngest
pupils demonstrate their skills. Will they
match the precision of the Red Queen, bring
the flourish of the Mad Hatter and keep better
time than the White Rabbit?

Surrounded by ladders, bicycles, easels and

Man Who Planted Trees) recounts Tolkien’s
miniature masterpiece, with music specially

In Romeo and Juliet, we find Balthasar’s
bemused, Romeo’s a wuss and the Friar’s on the
fiddle but Juliet Capulet calls the shots in an icecream war with the Montagues. Throw in a
voluptuous Nurse, a dandy Paris, two warring
tribes with loads of raspberry ripple and you’ve
the recipe for a rip-roaring romance with a twist
in this innovative take on another Shakespeare
gem.

Straight out of the Colorado Rockies, this
award-winning band plays with confidence,
grace and a real depth of character. The
musicians draw influences from all of the
greats – from Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs
to the band’s contemporaries.
The masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and
early swing, The California Feetwarmers are
renowned for an earthy depth of character.
Their boisterous on-stage antics are solidly
underpinned by amazing playing. Their
collaboration with Keb’ Mo’ won them a
Grammy-nomination in the Best American
Roots Performance category.
With the authentic sound of
the saxophone-led swing
bands of the 40s and 50s,
The Deke McGee Band
perform their own brand of
soulful rhythm n’ blues and
Texas tenor saxophone.
California Feetwarmers re-visit material from
The Blue Ridge Playboys, Scott Joplin, The
Memphis Jugband and Emile Grimshaw’s Rag
Pickers and, last year, they sold out Glasgow’s
Old Fruitmarket during Celtic Connections.
With Deke on saxophones,
Michael Kelly on piano, Sam
Firth on bass and Andy Cowie
on drums, the band plays an
uplifting mixture of blues,
swing, gospel and soul. These
Individual musicians have
played alongside artists
including Buddy Guy, Eagles
guitarist Joe Walsh, Zoot
Money and many others.
Biggar’s very own nine piece
ukulele ensemble, The Dukes
of Uke perform hits from the
Blitz - songs made popular
during the Second World War;
songs which raised the spirits
during troubled times and aim
to raise them again. There will
be bluebirds over Peebles,
while the Dukes of Uke
accentuate the positive and
that pesky rabbit keeps on
running through Berkeley
Square!
Ian Murray, musical leader of the
Dukes of Uke leads a hands on
workshop for uke players with
ambitions. Players will be
provided with song sheets and,
though the emphasis will be on
easy to play material, Ian will help
participants to tackle some
harder tunes.
