And as usual the arrival of the new brochure will provoke all sorts of reactions. Some people go online right away to buy tickets for a favourite show, some phone up to check details before they commit, and some sit down with the family diary to choose their entertainment for the next three months. But here’s another option: look out for the women! The Eastgate is delighted to welcome a clutch of divas to the theatre this spring, all bringing tremendous new work. First up is Joanna Macgregor, one of the world’s most innovative and creative pianists who moves effortlessly between classical and contemporary repertoire, adding touches of jazz and improvisation. Expect a performance of ‘effortless brilliance and blistering commitment’. She’s followed by the inimitable Liz Lochhead – poet, playwright, translator, broadcaster and feminist – with a collection of poems, monologues and music that span the decades of her prolific creative life. This is a literary treat that will touch your heart as well as your mind; ‘brilliant, raucous and scabrously funny’. Next in line is acclaimed choreographer Rosie Kay, who’ll be working with the Eastgate to present her stunning piece of dance theatre, 5 Soldiers, at Glencorse Barracks in Penicuik. Her company will also stage pop-up events and lead dance workshops in both Peebles and Penicuik. And finally there’s Rachel and Becky Unthank, award-winning singersongwriters who draw inspiration from the English folk tradition to create songs that have been described as ‘unsentimental and subversive tales of loss, fear, booze, brawls, abuse and sorrow’. Ballet on Screen ROYAL OPERA HOUSE (LIVE) ROYAL OPERA HOUSE (LIVE) LIZ LOCHHEAD & STEVE KETTLEY presents presents presents Giselle Frankenstein Somethings Old, Somethings New Auditorium Auditorium Auditorium The greatest of all romantic ballets, Peter Wright’s production of Marius Petipa’s classic is a tale of betrayal, the supernatural and love that transcends death. A love story unfolds against the ghostly backdrop of a Rhineland forest haunted by the fearful presence of the Wilis – vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. The beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, falls for Albrecht who conceals his identity to win her. The discovery of her lover’s deception shatters Giselle’s innocence and causes her to die of a broken heart. Albrecht is thrown into the hands of the merciless Wilis, but Giselle cannot bear to watch him die and returns as a ghost to save him. A young scientist at university, Victor Frankenstein becomes obsessed with unlocking the secrets of life, and decides to create it himself. Stealing body parts from fresh graves and stitching them together, he builds his Creature, with horrific repercussions. A warm welcome to Scotland's leading literary light. From the bittersweet to the rude and raunchy, Scotland’s Makar, Liz Lochhead weaves a spellbinding and beguiling show, mixing poems, monologues and music. Wed 6 April 7.15pm £17, £10 schoolchildren 4... ...Poetry and Music The world premiere of principal choreographer Liam Scarlett’s first three-act ballet for the company. An adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein which, rather than vamping up the gothic horror of the narrative, focuses on the human dramas of love, fear, loneliness and longing that play out around its monster protagonist. Scarlett once again works with designer John Macfarlane and composer Lowell Liebermann, who has written a specially commissioned score for the piece. Accompanied by the soulful sax of Steve Kettley she presents an intoxicating mix of her best work. During her career Liz Lochhead has been described variously as a poet, feminist playwright, translator and broadcaster but has said that 'when somebody asks me what I do I usually say writer. The most precious thing to me is to be a poet. If I were a playwright, I'd like to be a poet in the theatre.’ ‘brilliant, raucous and scabrously funny’ Sunday Times Fri 29 April 7.30pm £14 Age: 10+ Photo: Alastair Cook www.alastaircook.com Wed 18 May 7.15pm £17, £10 for schoolchildren EASTGATE PEEBLES EH45 8AD BOX OFFICE 01721 725 777 for more information visit www.eastgatearts.com ...5 eg... Staunch traditionalism and sonic adventure are easy bedfellows in their gentle hands. One day they are rubbing shoulders with Robert Plant, Adele, Elbow and Radiohead at the Mercurys, the next they are in a bunkhouse cooking for 50 fans on one of their residential singing weekends. In the 15 years since they first met to play through some of the older Scottish fiddle tunes, renowned Scottish fiddler Iain Fraser and adventurous Canadian cellist Christine Hanson have carved out busy musical paths in Scotland, Canada and places in between. This year they renew their amazing musical chemistry, exploring old Scottish tunes but also some very old Canadian tunes too. This is traditional music with its shoes kicked off supreme musicianship, perfect clarity, and inspired arrangements. Enjoy an animated evening of Cape Breton/Scottish traditional music, stories and good craic! “a mesmerising duet of colour and emotion, at times playful, at times wistful, but always beautiful.” Highland Times £14 8... They have chosen a wonderfully varied programme. They start in the 18th century with the nobility of Bach and the sonata widely regarded as Mozart’s finest in this genre. They then fast forward to the 20th century to bring us Ravel’s jazz-influenced second sonata and Prokofiev’s tormented and powerfully atmospheric sonata. Cammarano’s adaptation of Scott’s The Bride of Lammermoor moved Donizetti to produce some of his most beautiful and most dramatically potent music. Benoît Jacquot’s production of Massenet’s tragic opera explores the conflict between duty and our most passionate desires. Werther loves Charlotte, but she promised her mother on her deathbed that she would marry Albert. After the marriage Charlotte suggests that Werther should leave – but not forget her. In the famous Mad Scene Donizetti’s musical motifs poignantly make manifest her distracted mind. Other highlights include the sextet Chi mi frena in tal momento, the furious duet between Enrico and Edgardo and the opera’s closing Tomb Scene. Director Katie Mitchell focusses on how an intelligent woman, failed by the men in her life, experiences a horrifying mental breakdown. Charlotte, unhappily married, has fallen in love with Werther through his letters. He returns unexpectedly; Charlotte sends him away. Werther shoots himself and dies in Charlotte’s arms. The Eastgate is working in partnership with Rosie Kay Dance Company to present this visceral tour de force of the senses to audiences in the south east. Auditorium By the light of the moon in the middle of the night Rosie, Toby Toby the cat and one small mouse sneak out, into the garden, to play in the shadow of the apple tree. When Toby Toby steals the moon from the sky they go on an adventure across star-speckled skies and over the sea. But is it all just a dream? 5 Soldiers is a moving, dramatic piece of dance theatre that explores how 5 people are transformed into 5 soldiers ready to lay their bodies on the line, preparing themselves for the sheer physicality of combat, the possibility of injury and the impact of conflict on their bodies and minds. This new visual adventure into an exciting world of dreams and imagination is told using puppetry, video and a new musical score. It is based on the favourite book by Marie-Louise Gay and presented as part of the Puppet Animation Festival 2016. Margaret Rutherford was mortified at the prospect of sullying her reputation with something as sordid as murder. This is the story of the real reason why “the funniest woman alive” didn’t want to take on her most famous role. An unlikely friendship develops between the two women filled with high tea, brandy snaps and gossip and Agatha herself turns detective on a mission to unearth Rutherford’s tragic and shocking secret. “Whiplash wit” The Guardian Auditorium Two of the bard’s classics, reduced to 50 minutes each and specially adapted for young audiences. Hamlet’s got the hump. His Uncle Claudius has bumped off his Dad and married his Mum, who’s a bit too fond of ‘ginger beer’.girlfriend Ophelia won’t listen to a word he says and his best mate, Horatio, keeps seeing ghosts. No wonder Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are confused. Mysteries, murders and magical music in this intriguing take on Shakespeare’s longest play. Not a very successful one, partly because he has so many other things to do. For some time he has been obsessed with one particular canvas – a curious picture of a tree with a vast landscape stretching out behind it. The painting keeps getting bigger and bigger, but Niggle has a journey to make. Leap through the looking glass into a world of imagination as the dance school’s youngest pupils demonstrate their skills. Will they match the precision of the Red Queen, bring the flourish of the Mad Hatter and keep better time than the White Rabbit? presents Surrounded by ladders, bicycles, easels and heirlooms, Richard Medrington (Jean from The Man Who Planted Trees) recounts Tolkien’s miniature masterpiece, with music specially composed by Karine Polwart.
