A: I suggest you contact
antiques dealers in your
area to see if there is any
interest. You should be
aware that the economy is
sluggish and values vary
from region to region.
For example, your Norwegian trunk might be
worth more in your area
since it was settled by
immigrants from Norway.
A second thing you might
want to do is have your
antiques appraised by
a certified professional.
Even though this will not
be free, you will have an
expert’s opinion.
Q: I have a four-volume
set of “Abraham Lincoln” by Carl Sandburg,
published in 1939. How
much should I ask for it?

four-volume 1939 edition

com. Most are priced at
$4 to $6 per volume. The
first edition, originally
published in 1926, is
extremely rare and in
the original dust jacket
or slipcover can retail
for several hundred
dollars, depending on
condition.

fountain pen at a garage

be worth much more.
It is a Sheaffer “Lifetime Balance,” black
with what appears to
be flakes in its design.

A: Your pen was issued
in about 1934 and in
excellent-to-good condition should be worth in
the $250 to $350 range.
Q: I have a painting by
Emmanuel P. Matthews
entitled “Picnic on the
Pond.” I was told by a
representative of a major
auction house that it
could be worth as much
as $10,000, but I would
have to bring it to New
York for a real appraisal.
What is your advice?

A: If you plan to sell your
painting, the first thing
you need to do is get an
appraisal by a certified
expert. This expert isn’t
a neighbor or someone
who claims to know a
little about artwork. To
find an appraiser, I suggest you contact one of
the associations, namely
The American Society
of Appraisers, The
International Society
of Appraisers, or The
Appraisers Association
of America. Experts
generally provide two
types of appraisals, verbal and written. Written
appraisals are especially
recommended for insurance purposes. After you
have gotten an appraisal,
then the time has come
to contact some of the
larger auction houses.

your homework and rely
on experts who are competent and knowledgeable about artwork.

Pocket Tag Album
This is a mini album that can be used for just
about anything. It can stand alone or you could
even tr y using it on a scrapbook page. If you
have a Cricut with the T ags, Bags, Boxes and
More cartridge, the Wrap It Up cartridge or
any other car tridge with gift tags on it, you
can easily make the tags. If not, you can fi nd a
pattern and cut out enough for the amount of
Pocket Tags that you want. To make the pocket you just add paper to the bottom of the tags,
but make sur e you’re adhering it to the back.
And to hide the glued on tag pieces, double up
with another tag cut out. Then you just decorate the pocket and slide your pictur es and
keepsakes into the pocket. Once you have all
your individual tags put together , take a ribbon and tie them together . You can use a tag
for each member of the family , a school year ,
etc. You can even use them for events like a
wedding. Each tag can be a dif ferent memory from the day; first dance, father-daughter
dance, cutting the cake, etc.

When I was young my Mother told me “Clearance” was
her middle name. Where shopping was involved, she gave
me a keen eye for the bright yellow CLEARANCE sign
that ever y store seemed to have. These signs would give
savings of mythical pr oportions to those who wer e for tified enough to fi nd wher e stor es had hidden them and
their bounty. To this day I still hunt down those signs in
almost ever y stor e I enter , but now it seems that ever y
rack or shelf in the store promises savings of some kind.
This “Savings Everywhere” phenomenon that has popped
up all over the place. I like to call this phenomenon “The
Clearance Myth”. Everyone is trying to save a dollar here
and there, and the stores want to make sure you spend the
dollars you will spend with them by tapping into the power
of the bright yellow sign. This makes it harder and harder
to find the “REAL Clearance”.
So how do you fi nd the “REAL Clearance”? It is sometimes difficult to find the real Clearance deals amongst the
sea of sale signs, but not impossible. Many stor es put low
percentage of f “Clearance” right at the fr ont of the stor e.
This is to allow you to save money right of f the bat and
then use those savings to buy other things in the stor e.
To find the high percentage off “Clearance” there are two
great places to look. The number one area is by the bathrooms which are usually in the very back of the store. The
number two ar ea is trickier . Some stor es tr y to or ganize
their Clearance into the sections: Men’s Clothing, W omen’s Clothing, Appliances, etc. This means that ther e are
mini Clearance sections in ever y department in the store.
To find these you also have to look in the back of the section. Real “Clearance” signs will be a dif ferent color than
the normal sale signs, usually red or yellow.
You can also use mini sales to your advantage. Many larger store chains will allow you to compound the percentage
off when they have a sale. The ability to compound savings
will be limited so make sure to read the fine print. For example, things labeled as “Clearance” ar e usually not able
to have the compound savings where everyday sale items

I like to obser ve the manner in which a society
forms opinions concerning the worthiness of the citizenry. Each culture seems to find some way to divide
people into classes, or castes, if you may . We even
find ways to build an identity and make a social statement by the things we identify with.
W e have fat fr ee, sugar fr ee, zer o calories, and
cholesterol fr ee. I can star t to feel that I must use
and support these or care little about myself or my
society’s future. As I began to fall in line and become
more socially conscious I’ve noticed that my highfalutin numbers have been incr easing. The USDA has
yet to come up with a minimum daily allowance for
this wonder ful feeling of self-impor tance, but I am
convinced that they should. Folks that choose the
right stuff to purchase should be given high marks.
Wouldn’t it be great to keep score and compare numbers with others... or use them to incr ease your own
highfalutin score.
You may have noticed my bent toward being wordy.
It makes me feel highfalutin. 5 points for me. But isn’t
that an interesting word? It’s not used by a person attempting to be complimentary. It is used to describe
someone tr ying to appear impor tant when they ar e
in fact not important at all. Yeah, that pretty much describes me. Alright then, what about this word?
The strangest origin that I read was that there was
confusion about the pr onunciation. I hear that high
gluten flour makes for some very fine br ead. While
gossipping about someone who was tr ying to appear
to have an elevated statur e in the community , our
originator may have had a mouthful of that br ead.
Maybe he was answering a question about the flour...
highgluten, highfalutin? It doesn’t sound pr obable to
me either , but the person who misunderstood that
answer would have felt an immediate spike to their
highfalutin numbers.
The well-to-do traveled by steamboat in the past.
One theory claims that the expression came from the
high, fl uted smokestacks on such a vessel. That one
doesn’t seem to hold much water , but I can see how
it could make someone feel highfalutin to say it about
someone else. Add five points to both sides.
Those who flaunted their wealth and power earned
this disr espectful moniker in the middle 1800s. The
“high” part seems to be simple enough to fi gure out.
The “falutin” may come fr om the sound of delicate
speech of the wealthy. Hoity-toidy rich folk were being mocked by being compared to the sound of a flute.
The referee says ten more points for all involved.
“High-fl own” is an expr ession for extravagance
that’s been ar ound for centuries. On this side of the
Atlantic we are known for mashing-up foreign expressions and coining one of our own. Ok then, 50 points
for all of us for being American.

news is true.
