In October of 2011 KTM Motorsports made history when it announced the signing of
former AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross National Champion Ryan Dungey as the
newest member of its Red Bull/KTM Factory Racing Team.
Shortly after, KTM stunned MX fans everywhere announcing the late arrival of a
new motorcycle to its 2012 model-line up: The 450 SX-F Factory Edition. This
model was developed with the racer in mind with product developers receiving
feedback from the Red Bull/KTM Factory riders and U.S.-based Research &
Development team ensuring this would be the most superior MX bike to date.
Together, Dungey and his new race machine made the perfect match to help the
Red Bull/KTM Team proceed to the next step in its racing goal: winning races and
ultimately a U.S Championship.
After only two weeks on the bike, Dungey competed aboard his new factory
machine at the Monster Energy Cup taking home the runner-up position in the
premier class. Only two months after, Dungey was positioned on the starting gate
for the opening round of the AMA Supercross Series ready to show
audiences everywhere what he and his KTM were capable of. In their
first outing he earned the first-ever Supercross class podium for
the KTM brand in U.S. Supercross racing history. More
impressively, he topped that history making night one
week later after leading the Phoenix Supercross event
holeshot to checkered flag earning his and KTM’s
first-ever Supercross class victory!

The 450 SX-F Factory Edition features a fully adjustable
48mm USD WP closed cartridge fork and WP shock
with specific settings developed to match the new
engine/chassis combination. The new settings provide
improved overall balance, increased bottoming control,
excellent corner stability and tons of traction.

chassis providing the perfect amount of rigidity and flex.

The one-piece cast swingarm features a new design to
accommodate a larger 25mm rear axle (+5mm) for additional
durability in supercross and motocross riding. The new
chromoly frame features an X-Brace in the steering head
area for stability in rough conditions and additional lateral
rigidity throughout cornering. The downtubes have been
redesigned to be lighter, stronger and provide more ground
clearance. The head stay mount has been positioned and tuned
to work in conjunction with the entire frame and engine.

The 450 SX-F Factory Edition features an entirely new valve train system.
The new lightweight single overhead cam operates lightweight rocker
arms (intake arm is DLC coated) pushing on four titanium valves with
high performance springs and retainers resulting in a 1.8lb reduction
of rotating mass. Maintenance is made easy by the simple to remove
angled valve cover exposing the entire valve train. The cam chain
adjuster is simple lightweight spring loaded ratchet-style design.

The 450 SX-F Factory Edition features a newly designed Pankl
crankshaft and Pankl connecting rod for maximum performance and
durability. The components are derived from KTM Motorsports and
the connecting rod utilizes a plain bearing for the big end bearing
(instead of a needle bearing) for reduced reciprocating mass and
friction as well as almost doubling the maintenance interval!

The new 95mm Koenig piston has been specifically designed
to handle the high performance 12.6:1 compression ratio
with the new box-in-box design. It also features a new piston
ring package for reduced blow-by and oil consumption.

setting tool
The KTM PowerParts User Setting Tool comes as standard equipment
with the 450 SX-F Factory Edition and it allows the rider to make specific
adjustments to the injection and ignition for different locations and usage.

cylinder head
The cylinder head for the 450 SX-F Factory Edition has redesigned intake
and exhaust ports along with a new combustion camber for maximum
performance. It also features more efficient water flow and cooling.

transmission
The 450 SX-F Factory Edition features a 5-speed transmission that has been
designed to meet the demands of US Supercross and Motocross tracks. The
transmission is hydraulically operated by a high-tech lightweight adjustable
single diaphragm spring clutch. The cush drives have been relocated from
the one-piece machined steel outer basket to the inner basket which provides
more oil capacity to critical components and improved cooling. The system
also provides a much lower lever force than in the past for less rider fatigue.

throttle body
The new Keihin 44mm throttle body and ECU were specifically designed for the 450 engine. It features a
repositioned injector that sprays a controlled mist from the bottom of the throttle body for increased power
and throttle response. Idle control is now separate from the cold start button for easy adjustments. The new
lightweight TPS sensor also features a new connector with a longer lead wire for protection against impacts during
racing and moisture. The intake boot has a new shape and construction to maximize performance and provide a
strong linear powerband as well as resist structural changes during riding to maintain the performance.

The 450 SX-F Factory Edition features electric start as standard equipment. The new design has been
simplified and features a smaller, more compact starter motor with the option for a kick starter.
die-cast engine cases
The 450’s engine cases utilize new die-cast technology which provides an extremely lightweight
and precise casting. This technology allows the engine to be more compact by eliminating
excess casting material. The cases are made with a specifically engineered aluminum
alloy which provides more ductility for additional protection against breakage.
