The Setting For more than 600 years, Hofburg
Vienna in the heart of Vienna was not only the
political centre of the Habsburg dynasty, but also
the main residence of the imperial family.
Today, there are many different buildings on
the vast, approximately 30 hectares large stately
imperial premises. Here is where the Austrian
President resides, and many cultural institutions
as well as the Spanish court riding school are
also situated here.
The Experience Hofburg Vienna offers an
excellent opportunity to gain insight into the
Hofburg Vienna
imperial lifeworld of one of the most famous
sovereign dynasties in the history of the world:
The Sisi Museum is designed as a “staging of
emotions”. Many of the poems she wrote and
a selection of very personal exhibits document
Imperial apartments
the life of this extravagant, melancholy monarch
and the emergence of the legend following
her death.
The everyday life of the imperial family was
marked by duties and tradition; many of its facets
are presented in the imperial apartments: all 19
residential rooms and offices of Emperor Francis
Joseph I and Empress Elizabeth were restored in
accordance with historical photos and convey an
impression of the private environment of the
ruler and his consort.
An individual collection has been devoted to
Sisi Museum
the dining culture of the imperial household.
Exquisite china, precious glasses and extremely
fine t able linen can be seen on 1300 m2 in the
imperial silver collection.

Schönbrunn
Palace & Park
The Setting Magnificent Schönbrunn Palace
was the summer residence of the imperial family.
It was built in Rococo style, furnished
extravagantly, and it became the centre of courtly
and political life under Empress Maria Theresa.
Today, Schönbrunn is one of the most important
cultural monuments in Austria and is protected
as part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage.
The Experience Along with Versailles,
Schönbrunn Palace with its grand park is one of
the most charming Baroque total works of art in
Europe. In accordance with the Baroque concept,
architecture and nature were to pervade each
other, so the stately imperial building and the
Schönbrunn
Palace
beautiful garden form a harmonious whole.
Depending on the tour, up to 40 impressive state
rooms convey an idea of the life of the imperial
family – from Maria Theresa to Francis Joseph
and Elizabeth. Walking through their chambers is
like striding through several centuries at once.
Each parlour, each hall has a story to tell – of
lavish celebrations, global politics and historic
The vast garden
encounters.
Especially the “Bergl” rooms, which are only
accessible in the “Imperial Austria” tour, reveal
the interplay of the atmosphere in the palace
and the garden. These rooms are embellished
with J ohann Wenzel Bergl’s artistically exotic and
Baroque painted garden motifs; in the hot months
of summer, when she felt it was too humid on the
beletage floor, Maria Theresa often took refuge
here in her late years.

Schönbrunn
Animal Park
The Setting The oldest zoo in the world,
Schönbrunn Animal Park, is embedded in the
Baroque parks of the imperial summer residence
Schönbrunn Palace. In the summer of 1752,
Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine led his
noble visitors through the newly built pens for
the first time; they now belong to the only still
existing Baroque menagerie in the world.
The Experience Schönbrunn Animal Park has
an interesting past as a Baroque menagerie, and
a sound future as one of the most modern theme
zoos with exemplary natural animal habitats.
Its history – in 1906, the first captive elephant
was born here – as well as the present efforts to
maintain the highest animal keeping standards
show how much is done for the well-being of the
animals. Schönbrunn Animal Park is one of the
few zoos in the world that were given a couple of
large panda bears by the People’s Republic of
China in the framework of an international
research and breeding project. The other special
Panda bears
highlights of the historically developed animal
park include the House of Big Cats, the Polarium,
the House of Aquariums and Terrariums, and the
Rain Forest House with its daily tropical storms.

Hof Palace
in the Marchfeld
The Setting In the Baroque period, Austria’s
largest country palace complex was a retreat for
the imperial family and also provided a magnifi
cent venue for opulent celebrations. Following
comprehensive renovation, this Baroque
Gesamtkunstwerk comprised of palace, gardens
and manor farm has been restored to its former
splendour. Visitors will experience an authentic,
aristocratic world that brings to life every

fascinating facet of the Baroque era.
The Experience In this historic ensemble of
grand palace, beautiful terraced gardens and
extensive manor farm, visitors experience the
Baroque penchant for extravagant, splendid
display along with that period’s longing for the
idyllic life. On the ground floor of the palace – the
bel étage – the Imperial Apartments, including
the original furnishings, have been faithfully
restored. Among its other treasures, Hof Palace is

home to the ensemble of furniture, preserved
almost completely, that accompanied Empress
Maria Theresa during the last half of her life.
The splendid Baroque garden with its luxuriant
flower borders, splendid fountains and highly
expressive stone sculpture is one of the loveliest
garden complexes of the Baroque period in
Europe. The Meierhof Manor Farm is one of the

largest remaining estates from the period and
makes 18th-century life come alive. It is home to
numerous domestic animals, including ancient
Austrian breeds that are rarely found today.

THE PLACE Founded by the Empress Maria
Theresa in 1747, the Court Furniture Directorate

preservation of the imperial furniture. In the
ensuing years the Imperial Furniture Collection
has grown to become the world’s largest
collection of furniture.
THE EXPERIENCE Displayed on a floor area
of 4000 m2, the former “lumber-rooms of the
monarchy” offers today’s visitors fascinating
insights into the home décor of the imperial
family. Among the thousands of items on display
are numerous personal keepsakes that formerly

and some of the empress’s furniture (right), Sissi

belonged to the Habsburgs and that give the
collection an unmistakably intimate character.
Examples are the cradle of Crown Prince Rudolf
and a set of chairs embroidered by Maria Theresa
and her daughters. Other unique highlights are

the original study of Emperor Franz II/I and the
“Egyptian Cabinet” that his third wife, Maria
Ludovica d’Este, furnished in the Hofburg Palace.
The museum has also a focus on the famous
Austrian “Sissi films”. A Sissi “path” through the
museum allows visitors to discover for themselves just how much or little the Sissi portrayed
in film has to do with the historical Elisabeth.
A tour of the Imperial Furniture Collection also
provides an impressive journey through the
history of Austrian furniture-making apart from
the imperial court: from the Biedermeier period
down to the present, each era is represented
with designs by outstanding Austrian artists,
including Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann and
Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky.
